"Can't say enough good things about this find. Great food, great service, intimate neighborhood place. Wait staff attentive & personal. Only negative was the dishwater cappuchino but we mentioned it so it will probably be up to amazing level soon! Highly recommend."

"They are very tight and you have to be up for having others on top of you, especially if you get the first table by the door, which we got despite a reservation weeks in advance. However, the food is great and we would go back. You can bring your own wine with a corkage fee and the service was excellent and friendly. We will make a reservation well in advance next time and request a different table in the back or further from the door. But we will go back for sure. I might even order the eggplant milanese again. Loved it!"

"The food was interesting, grilled calamari was too salty & peppery. The bus person hovered over my shoulder waiting for people to finish their salad, while they & I were still eating them. On our first visit, neither of these problems occurred."

"Restaurant was so delicious. It was a little pricey. We were shocked when the bill came and it was $241 before tip. Probably wont go back even though it was excellent. Great waitress. Only problem was that a host came to our table and asked us to pay the bill and leave because they needed our table to push together for a large party that was waiting. It wouldn't have been so bad if he would have offered us a drink or dessert. I already told some of my friends and they said that is a huge turn off and some nerve charging those prices."

"It was hard to talk to people at our table - soooo loud in there. But everyone enjoyed their food - very good. The portions were huge - instead of the oversized portions, they could cut down on the portions and add some side dishes, like some vegetables or salad or pasta."

"This was our second visit to Merlo's. We brought 3 people who had not been there before. Based on our prior experience, portions are large; sharing is advised. It's clear that the owner wants his guests to be happy- he checks with each table to ensure a good experience. My only criticism is about the noise level- the restaurant could use some accessories to inhibit the noise level. We will be back soon."

"Nanna's Gravy was excellent, great as leftovers as well. Our cut of pot roast was really fatty though. Artichoke Fritters were my second favorite. Everyone seems to rave about the brussels sprouts. They come with half a lemon and I am glad I didn't squeeze it on the whole dish. I started with my plate and found the capers to be very acidic and the lemon put it way over the edge. Even the ones without lemon were a bit much. We'll be back."

"Liked it better the first time. Both chicken piccata and chicken parm were too bready. Eggplant parm was lighter and had a better taste. Would recommend serving a small side of pasta and decrease size of entree. We had a lot of leftovers. The plate comes filled with two giant slabs of chicken. Wine pricey and limited choices. Is it going downhill?"

"Was gifted with a birthday dinner several weeks ago and was impressed with presentation and taste of food. Friday at lunch I didn't feel as if I was in the same place. The skirt steak was not the same cut as other restaurants use and needed seasoning. French fries had no taste [also needed seasoning]. Lava cake was not flowing. Do not recommend."

"Service and food are always good at Merlo's. This time we tried one of the appetizer specials. As good as the crab stuffed calamari was, I'm going back to the grilled calamari; love it! Our group had the brussel sprouts for an appetizer as well. Yum! For entrees we had chicken parm, salmon, brick chicken, and a salad. All were very good. It can get a little loud as the restaurant gets more crowded but the service never wanes."

"It was my first time at this restaurant and I would consider it a neighborhood gem. We started out with the artichoke fritters which were outstanding. We also had the brussel sprouts and the brick chicken which both were perfect. You also get a great amount of food! We then had the lava cake--yummy! I thought the wine list was very good as well! I would highly recommend you try this place! You will be back! PS: Outdoor area is so nice and they even have a lounge area!"

"food is above average. service is below average and not great attitude, servers and help are seen on smart phones unattentive. Hostess stand isnt in tune how or where to seat people. May try as takeout. the cocktails are ridiculously priced. kettle one rocks - $12.00 for smaller than average drink. for the amount of alchohol for the price...most expensive drink within the area."

"Not sure about the appeal of this restaurant. From prior reviews, we expected the waaay more than energetic noise level. However, although the servers and the management were generously attentive, our selections that evening were far less than the mouth happy abbondanza of blended flavors from oils, herbs, and garlic that we crave in traditional Italian cuisine. The grilled calamari itself was jucy and tender, but the sauce it sat in was overwhelmed by lemon. Similarly, the sauce for the mussel entre was peppered beyond reasonable. Bad luck on an off night? Maybe---but all considered, we’ll leave this popular spot to the many would-be diners that we saw being turned away while we were there for their lack of reservations."

"We enjoy the Ravinia neighhborhood very much and decided to try Merlo's based on ratings as well as newspaper article. We started with the house specialty appetizer, brussel sprouts. We are sprout fans but found them bitter tasting and couldn't finish. They served sprouts that were way too large and should not have been purchased by the restaurant. So much for the raved about specialty..... Go down the street to Abigals for better sprouts! Our server was friendly and was well informed about the daily specials. Our two meals were well priced but tasted just ok. Drinks were too expensive. I am always hoping for a great spot to recommend in Ravinia but unfortunately there is way too much competition in the area for Italian."

"The food was fine, nothing exceptional and nothing to make you want to go back. The restaurant was extremely noisy. One entree at our table arrived 10 minutes after all of the others which was awkward for those of us with food sitting in front of us. And the manager was one of the rudest, immature people we have come across. There are so many other restaurants with better food and ambiance that I would not waste my time or money going back"

"We've been to Merlo's twice now and have really enjoyed it both times. We're looking forward to warmer weather so we can sit outside. Some of our favorite dishes so far have been the gamberetti (shrimp and broccoli over linguini in an aglio olio, the brick chicken, and the mussels. Appetizers not to be missed are the grilled calamari and roasted brussel sprouts. Service is wonderful to a person; everyone there wants to make sure the customers have a positive dining experience. We'll be back- there are so many more dishes we want to try!"

"This Ravinia gem is drawing crowds from all over the metro area. Reservations are a must, even mid-week. Noise level is extreme, but the food and energy is worth it. Nice delicate touch to many Italian favorites. "Nana's Gravy" is a particular favorite of mine and exemplifies the definition of Comfort Food. Good wine list. Chalkboard specials can get slightly pricey, particularly on the seafood and fish items. Portions are generous. Spot-on service which is helpful, informed, and attentive but not rushed. Host John Merlo works the room well while overseeing his thriving operation. Summer outdoor dining is sure to be a hit. Parking in Ravinia is an issue."

"Hostess was rude. Told us basically that we had an hour to eat as there was another seating. Obviously we had reservations but were 20 min late, however we had called ahead to make sure we were still OK. We were seated at a table that was crowded into a corner where I could not even pull my chair up to put my coat on the back (had to move the table over and back...no help from staff. The server was pleasant and attentive though the food was not outstanding and it was so noisy it was hard to have a conversation...not that were allowed the time, based on our welcome warning. This was my second visit to this place...needless to say, there won't be a third. So many better places, so little time!"

"Highlight of the evening was two entrees from the evening's specials. Delicious grouper prepared vesuvio style and mussels in a spicy marinara sauce served over pasta. Enjoyed the salad, though overdressed and the order of brussel sprouts was flavorful, but again "overdressed". It is a noisy setting. We were lucky to be seated against an outside wall which made conversation a bit easier."

"Overall disappointing, but I'll heard vwry good things so we'll give it one more chance. Service was very very slow and it was not busy when we arrived for an early Sunday 5.30 reservation. We never got a drink we ordered. Portions very generous, but I thought the chicken Marsala bland. The penne vodka and eggplant parm were quite good though. The cheese pizza we ordered for the kids was so bad the kids wouldn't eat it. Atmosphere is nice and the place has a good energy."

"food was good. little too oily and salty. a bit pricey, but portions are good. would go back because its in neighborhood. wouldnt make a long trip to go though at this point. could use a few booths in there, its a little like a cattle car. service was average. the host did a great job by accomadating us w/ a better table and that gave us a good attitude and would return just for that reason. this place has a chance if it just ups its game a little and if it pours a "good" drink."

"There are pros for this restaurant and a few cons. The food was excellent. We had the Merlo's salad, brick chicken, salmon, and a shrimp pasta. All were wonderful. Our wine choice was very affordable and delicious. We would definitely recommend this restaurant. The cons the restaurant is very noisy on a Saturday night, it was very loud and hard to hear. We also never get our Brussel sprouts delivered and had some problems with overcharges on the bill.In the end we got it all fixed and still feel that we would be back. Just wish they could buffer the Noise level."

"We requested a quit table for our anniversary dinner. We were placed in a very small 2 top. We asked for a larger table and were told the 4 tops were for only 4 people. As we ate next to us at 2 separate tables 2 people were seated at 2 of the 4 tops. We were disappointed our request would not be honored."
