Located on the lobby level of Hotel Arts with street access off 12th Avenue SW, Yellow Door Bistro's design marries classical elements and contemporizes them with some unexpected and almost whimsical surprises which become instantly evident upon entering the restaurant space.
Much like the décor, Executive Chef Duncan Ly will prepare bistro-inspired dishes with a reverence for classic ingredients but served up with a contemporary twist. Our food will cater to the tastes of our hotel patrons as well as our local clientele offering an array of options while holding the highest standard of food with a perfect blend of bistro-inspired options. Yellow Door will also feature an enomatic wine program with 1oz, 3oz and 5oz pours of diverse wines as well as a classic cocktail menu.
Yellow Door Bistro will ensure patrons receive friendly, personality-driven service executed with attentiveness and professionalism. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
"My family ate here for Fathers Day. They have a modest breakfast buffet. Food is fresh and simple. Desserts were creative. Great atmosphere potential other than the restaurant was very quiet - maybe half full. Which was confusing given OpenTable was showing them as full most of the morning. Too bad as I would have booked a larger group had I known they really had the space."

"Took about 45 minutes for our food to come out and the restaurant was not busy at all. They were offering a breakfast buffet and full menu but perhaps they need to focus on one offering"

"On friday September 14 our host greeted us amicably but was unwilling to push 2 tables for two together. Instead led us over to a table for 20, with 8 settings at one end and 6 at the other end. He requested us to sit at the end with 6 place settings. There were 5 tables for 2 that were not reserved. We had to say that this seating was not acceptable and ask for the manager to intervene. The manager immediately pushed 2 tables for two together and solved the problem.
This indicates lack of training for front of house, which is strange because our server was very knowledgeable and helpful. This needs to be fixed immediately."

"The restaurant has been nicely renovated although feels little too open & luxe-family-restauranty for my liking.Maybe it was because we were plonked next to a family party when other tables seemed free but the whole ambiance never hit the spot.Overall our food was quite good, especially the appetizers. My sous-vide tenderloin was utterly unremarkable but the rest of the group seemed happy with their selections. The wine list is nicely comprehensive but the ipad, while trendy, is a useless tool for the job. When selecting wine I want to get a quick overview and then zero in for selection. That's impossible with the ipad and even the knowledgeable waiter struggled to find the right page. Prices are very reasonable. Good, not yet great."

"My husband and I had a function to attend at Hotel Arts. We decided to have an early dinner and thought the Yellow Door Bistro would be perfect. We were amazed at how great everything was. We only had an hour to dine and would go back to do the full dinning experience in the near future."

"I've been to Yellow Door three times now; once for lunch and twice for dinner. I had their beef tartar (for the second time) and it was fantastic. Perfect flavor and portion size. I love the nonstop sparkling water too. I had the seafood pasta - also fantastic. I'm obsessed with the decor in their. I think it's by far the coolest looking restaurant around. Thanks for another awesome evening! I will return - hopefully, soon!"

"Atmosphere is great...really light/airy and I thought the decor was artsy and unique. The food was better than any other hotel breakfast I've had in any downtown hotel restaurant. My only complaints were the watery scrambled eggs...I find all chefs add way too much milk and I had requested some mustard to accompany my sausages, which never came and the waiter never came back during the meal so I was unable to request again. The staff were very nice though and overall, service was great."

"We had the scallops, warm carrot puree salad, then the apricot chicken and the duck with pork belly. All was very good!! It was super fun, we had three drinks each and our whole bill was $135 or something. So strange, we poured over it to see what they forgot to charge us for. It was all on there. We're used to dropping $200, which is annoying for what you get sometimes, but this place is great value for the serious flavours and awesome servers. Very professional, a lot of fun, great night. People said the chairs are uncomfortable and the noise is too high - we found the chairs were fine and the music was at the right volume. Just perfect! We'll go back again soon!"

"Service was over kill. Trying to catch up with a friend and someone was constantly coming to our table asking if we wanted more water. Get rid of the big chairs. We were starting to feel claustrophobic. Took awhile to get our food and when we did the lamb was done rare instead of medium well so had to be sent back. We could hardly wait to get out of there as it was not relaxing at all. All we wanted was to have a nice meal and a glass of wine and visit. Even though food was good, would not go back. Also, the menu on the web site is not the same as it was in the restaurant."

"I was initially attracted to Yellow Door for its awesome decor...very modern and a bit wacky in a tasteful way! We went on Sauvignon Blanc night and were given the option of an $11 flight of 3 white wines, which was fun and affordable. The gazpacho and the salmon dish were delicious (best cooked salmon I've had in a while) and they went out of their way to include a gluten free option for me instead of the bread basket. The servers were very friendly (if a little new) and made sure we had everything we needed."

"Went here for Mother's Day dinner and it was a nice experience. Plan to spend the entire night here if you go as things did move slowly, however that's exactly what we were looking for. Great wine list and menu. They cater to allergies and preferences as I'm vegan. My mother ordered the Lamb however to her it was too rare. (They have a different way of cooking the meat, where they texture seems more rare when it may actually be cooked through). She ended up ordering another dish as this wasn't explained prior to. Her second dish was the Gnocchi and she loved it. The staff was knowledgeable and understanding. I would recommend going there again."

"The food was amazing - so yummy. had the bouillabaisse and the lemon tart for dessert. The wine selection was wonderful.. The only downside was the noise - it is LOUD!
The servers were great too. Will definitely go back, but not for a quiet romantic setting - YellowDoor is for conversation, lively friends and people who are not annoyed by having to yell across the table at each other.
the shutters and eclectic chairs are definitely great conversation pieces."

"The seats are awkward and I was given the most awkward one with my back to a bulkhead in traffic next to the radiator..at least on a bus you're going somewhere. Stiff, pretentious and my hot food was tepid. Blah, blah, blah. If it weren't for our gracious hostess I couldn't say a nice thing about the joint. Whatever her name is I like where she comes from."

"The food and service was very good. The noise level was quite high. Part of the problem was the table next to us. The music was high enough conversation was difficult at times. I don't dine out to spend the time trying to communicate at a shout to my companions. I would suggest this will be a turn off to many people. This is unfortunate as the food is very good and the chef is taking a back seat to the noise."

"I noticed right away that all the dishes that had been served were eye catching; colorful & fresh looking. We ordered a couple salads, but I think I really wanted the BLT (served to the table beside us). The salads were wonderful and crisp and the combination of the apples and coconut was a nice surprise. I am a sucker for a BLT and this one looked fantastic! On my next visit I'm ordering that."

"Outstanding service, great lobster bisque. The service staff were all very friendly and accommodating, never in a rush but always attentive. I had asked for a private table on my reservation request as this was an anniversary dinner for my wife and I. The manager went out of his way to move us to a quieter table and my wife and I were treated to celebratory prosecco to start our meal, at no charge. The rest of the meal was very good as well. It's a bit noisy at times and seating is not very private so the ambience may be a bit lacking. The food and service make up for any shortcomings in ambience and had this been any other night than our anniversary I would have had no issue at all with the seating."

"The restauarant was absolutely gorgeous and had a fantastic interior design. The only majour "complaint" was that it had such a romantic feel to it, but it was a little loud in their to call it an "intimate" setting by any means. There was a bachelorette party going on which added extra noise and because this past weekend in Calgary was Comicon, apparantly there is no particular "dress code" in this place as they were letting people all of whom were dressed up in silly costumes come in as if it was just a neighbourhood pub. Not exactly the people watching I had in mind when wanting to come out for a nice, romantic dinner. But with those two out of the ordinary exceptions, we had a fabulous experience. The wine was good, the food was amazin"

"We had dinner on a Friday evening recently. This place is fairly new and has a kind of cool hip vibe that seems to attract a youthful but sophisticated crowd. It was pretty busy on Friday, but not so much that we couldn't get a table at 6:30 at the last minute. The food came well presented and had some imaginative touches, but unfortunately while well prepared, most of the dishes just didn't hit it right. The dressing for caesar salad was just way too acidic. Similarly for the spring salmon, which was perfectly cooked and great to look at, but the tomato vinaigrette completely overwhelmed the dish so nothing else could be tasted. Pity - these could be great dishes."

"Good atmosphere and excellent freindly service. The scallop appetiser dish was very good indeed. The mains has a mixed review. The Chicken dish was excellent and well cooked with nice balance of flavours. The Boullibaise was disappointing; a lot of potato filler and miserly seafood.
The wine list is excellent and well priced (for Calgary!).
All in all the experience was good, we would return and recommend to others, hopefully the Bouillibaise was an anomaly."

"I have to mention that the restaurant has a great interior, well designed and stylish. we are regularly enjoying brunch at various places in downtown and Yellow Door's was ok. The selection was not too large, the taste was ok. I wouldnt return for brunch but maybe for lunch or dinner. the service was quite poor, everything took a very long time and it was not that busy."

"I went to this restaurant with my family for my dads birthday. When we got there we received our menu, 10 minutes later we where ordering our appetizers and then another 10 minutes later the waiter came over and told us they had a limited menu and that only 8 items are available for lunch. We then order our food it took 45 minutes to make 5 burgers when we were the only people in the restaurant. When we spoke to the manager he proceeded to be arrogant that there was nothing wrong with the service or food. I would not recommend this restaurant."

"Overall we had a lovely experience at Yellow Door. The service was impeccable from the moment we walked in the door. I actually can't remember the last time I experienced such wonderful service in Calgary. The decor was modern, funky and like nothing else in the city. The food was great. We had french onion soup and twice baked fries to start. Although both were delicious nothing to rant and rave about. For mains we had salmon, ravioli and gnocchi although good, again nothing to go on and on about. Overall we really enjoyed our experience and would definitely recommend it to others."
