"We heard about MAKE through KPCC Radio Station and thought about giving it a try. It's a very clean, modern place in a very Zen Setting. The staff is very nice and helpful. The menu is fairly small and limited and extremely overpriced. I frequent Raw food places and am a Vegan myself. The food quality was good but $9-11 for a Smoothie and $20-30 for a simple dish of Raw Veggies is too high and I don't plan on returning. I feel like prices like this will scare people away from Raw and Vegan places unfortunately."

"We went for Mother's Day and I knew it was going to be pricey but it's not worth a second trip. I wanted to totally support a Vegan and RAW restaurant, but for a family of 5 the amount of food compared to the price is not practical, when there are other vegan and raw restaurant that are more economical and just as impressive.
Maybe adjust the price to go with the amount of food to make it more marketable and profitable, and worth while."

"It is hard to find genuinely good raw food. MAKE does raw food amazingly well. Not only does it look beautiful, but it tastes amazing! I brought my meat and potato BF and he LOVED the lasagna. The location is a bit odd, but the food is worth it! Whenever I am in the Santa Monica area I will be visiting MAKE - and wishing they would open in SF Bay Area!"

"The squash with saffron yogurt was the standout dish for me, as well as the black pepper kelp noodles. If you're not used to raw vegan cuisine, this is a great entre to it (don't be put off by names!). All dishes are prepared artfully -- presentation is great. Dishes aren't overwhelmed by garlic, as was the challenge I had with Juliano's Planet RAW. Here the food is light yet very satisfying. Three of us shared 3 starters and 3 mains and ( hungry good eaters all of us) left fully content.

"This was seriously one of the best meals of my life. I'm a vegetarian and my dinner companion is a meat-eater, but we didn't miss anything with the raw vegan dishes. We got the five-course tasting menu and MAY have loved it so much that we ordered additional entrees at the end of the meal. We just wanted to try everything! By the third course, we were already planning return trip with our significant others."

"If you love healthy food, want to avoid GMOs, don't believe raw, vegan food can taste and look outstanding and exciting, then come to M.A.K.E. and prepare to be wowed! While the place is not much on atmosphere, they do their best to make the most of a small space in a mall, the presentation of food and the surprising and excellent flavors more than make up for it. I am hooked and already know what I'm going to order when I return!"

"I hoped the dishes at M.A.K.E. would live up to my previous experiences at Matthew Kenney's NY restaurant. To my great pleasure, the food exceeded my expectations. The combination of ingredients and spices in the dishes was impeccable. I recommend starting with the Tree Nut Cheeses plate, as it offered a delightful variety of flavors. The White Chocolate/Grapefruit/Ginger dessert was also amazing. The staff was very friendly and our waitress seemed to magically appear the moment I needed something. Yes it's a bit pricey, but well worth it for high quality vegan food. The only reason I did not give M.A.K.E. four stars is The Market's open style of seating, which to me felt a little like a cheap mall food court."

"There was not enough food on the plate to give a valid review. We were four people, each ordered an entree. It would not have been an entire meal had we put all four dinners together. The food tasted good, there just wasn't enough on anybody's plate. Needless to say, we went out to eat when we left."

"The kelp noodles, kimchi dumplings, and carrot gnocchi were delicious. The cocktails (made with wine/no liquor) were yummy but took a LONG time to get to us (despite the restaurant being mostly empty). The server blamed it on fresh squeezed juices, but it doesn't take 20 minutes to squeeze juice for two drinks. I was underwhelmed by her service, but the bus staff kept our water refilled and promptly cleared plates, so that helped (and had the server been equally on the ball, I would have rated them "excellent" for Service). The prices seemed high for what you received, but I don't eat a lot of raw/vegan food. The wine/beer list was small and seemed overpriced."

"The lasagna ingredients was completely disproportionate. There was tons of rich, heavy, creamy "ricotta" and tomato paste with only a thin layer of veggies. The dish was truly unbalanced and should have had much more zucchini or less of the "cheese" to make it enjoyable."

We walked to Joe's Pizza on Broadway west of Second and got a couple slices to fill up....but MAKE was still definitely memorable..."

"The staff was not particularly friendly at first. After asking a lot of questions & talking "food" they warmed up. What was amazing to us was that our server did not do her homework on Matthew Kenney.
We were much more familiar with his cookbooks & restaurants than she was.
We love finding new vegan/raw restaurants & would absolutely go back! My sister, who lives in LA, didnt want to go to a mall- near a foodcourt to eat lunch.... but she loved M.A.K.E. too! We'd for sure recommend & go back!!
On a side note, everyone LOVES the lasagna on all the reviews... We all thought it was mediocre... But we ordered many, many items & everything else was fabulous!"

"We ate the kimchi dumplings, the sous vide portobello salad and the kelp noodles as a main. The dumplings were amazing bursts of flavor, the sous vide portobello tasted rich and delicious and the salad was just the right amount to share the 2 starters. We got the kelp noodles to share and they were also delicious. We finished with the apple pie which was again, refreshing and quite tasty. Nothing was pretending to be something it wasn't and while not a big fan of raw vegan normally, this was quite a yummy dinner."

Location is rather open in Santa Monica place so I hesitate to call it a special occasion place although there were several other couples there. "Best Raw Vegan Cuisine we have ever tasted! Try the chef's tasting menu which is a bargain and if you want an excellent overview of the the chef's favorites! Service is excellent. There is a Culinary Academy for Raw Food attached which is our next date!

"Beautiful space, and great service. I am a huge fan of raw vegan cuisine, and was extremely excited to come and try Matthew Kenney's new spot. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. I hate to write a bad review, but perhaps it can be helpful to them. The food and presentation was gorgeous, and everything was a work of art, however, it just wasn't so tasty. The kimchee dumpling appetizer was the best, but super super salty. The lasagna reminded me a lot of the lasagna at Pure in NYC, but the flavors were overpowered by the sun-dried tomato, and it was extremely acidic. The black pepper kelp alfredo could have been delicious, but the black pepper was so strong, my tongue was on fire. The mushroom tacos were ok, & needed more mole sauce."

"The food and service was outstanding! Definitely coming back. We did the five course meal with wine pairings...so much fun! I took my partner here for his birthday and I would have to say the only downside is that he took a seat facing another restaurant's entrance, which was not so scenic. My seat was facing inside the restaurant (which is beatuiful) so I loved it. I was expecting it to be a super fancy place but it is definitely a bit more casual since it is in a space with other shops and cooking classes right outside the door. Highly recommend though!"

"I have never written a negative review of any restaurant - until now. Overpriced wine list. Food was very small portions, let alone for the price. Either severely understaffed or severely under-trained. Food was delicious - in line with raw food. The single worst part of the experience was the restaurant environment - it's the wrong setting if MAKE sees itself as an upscale gourmet (raw) restaurant. Its location within Santa Monica Place makes you feel like you're in a college food court. The few walls it does have are decorated nicely in a modern, natural design. However, between the (overworked) staff and the underwhelming decor/location - pass this one up for one of the many other more compelling raw cafes in SM."

"M.A.K.E. is a creative, innovative, fresh, and vibrant restaurant. I went for lunch with a girlfriend and the staff was friendly and fun, chefs were artists, and flavors were unique and delicious.
It's walking distance from the beach, promenade, shopping, etc. so it makes for a great date. They have a stunning wine list and cocktails featuring their wines.
It is a badge of honor to the city of Santa Monica with it's mindful healthy offerings that cater to the locals and tourists alike.
I will be back often."

"Two of us enjoyed sharing the Hummus plate, and each of our main courses. We'd looked forward to surprises, since this is raw food cuisine, and got them. Several things were marinated, which also tenderized the vegetable. The crackers were delish, I'd love to be able to take home a bag. The presentation of each dish was beautiful. I found myself in the same area the next day and stopped in for a Clean Green juice, which was wonderful! Thanks, wishing your restaurant continued success in Santa Monica. I'd heard the reservations for dinner were weeks out, but lunch did not have such a long wait. I bet you could do a walk in without any issues for lunch."

Each plate is a work of art and it is a wonderful experience to see the sous Chef skillfully assemble them behind the counter.
