Discreetly hidden in the back of the boisterous izakaya Wafu, lays Roe — an intimate and modern seafood restaurant brought to you by lauded Chef Trent Pierce. Resurrecting the cooking style that he introduced at the beloved FIN, Pierce focuses on fresh seafood that he carefully sources and personally forages from the Oregon coast.
The cuisine highlights the versatility of seafood through the creation of nuanced flavor profiles, creative use of ingredients, innovative technique and presentation. An open kitchen located directly in the dining room invites guests to witness this creative process firsthand. Dishes are accompanied by a rotating, carefully curated, beverage selection that is chosen specifically to complement the dishes on that week’s menu. Our beverage selection has a wide range of options with particular emphasis on wine, sake, sherry, cider, beer and spirits.
"The meal was amazing. We did the four coarse 'our choice' tasting. Every plate was beautiful and every bite delicious. We will be back again! Best meal I've had in the nw by far."

"We had the chef's tasting menu with the paired wines. Best wine pairings I have ever had -- perfectly complimented the art-like entrees. Plus, the server was incredibly educated on the wine. Knew tons about each one. A thoroughly enjoyed meal."

"counting ourselves as foodies and folks who like superb food and semi-quiet places, Roe is now one of fav places. 4 of us ordered the prix fix dinner and had a most wonderful dining experience. The food was so fresh, creative and delicious my husband and I decided to return as a twosome so we wouldn't have to share! Service was informed without being intrusive. Ambiance is quiet, refined and fun. It feels like you are in a speakeasy, without all the noise. What a unique and wonderful experience."

"Loved this small, dark, secretive room. Few tables. Lovely service. Food was beautiful. Great for a romantic dinner, or special evening with friends. We took my mom there for dinner with 4 friends. Was perfect."

"I regret not taking notes but I was on a date and having a great time. However, the food was excellent. Chef Trent is back in his element with fish. The layers of flavors and the sauces are outstanding. My only quibble was with dessert. It was good but a level below all the rest of the food we were served. Service is unobtrusive. I will be back for sure."

"WOW... don't know what else to say... This was a unique experience from the start, when we had to figure out where it is. Turns out to be a "restaurant inside of a restaurant-- you first enter Wafu, a boisterous ramen bistro, then you're led to the back, through the drapes and another door to a more subdue and private area-- with calm music, attentive service and mind-blowing food. The only way to order is the 4-course with wine pairings-- sit back and let the innovative favors come to you!"

"A very quiet and romantic restaurant tucked in the back of a vibrant bar. The food was fantastic - if you love fish this is a must. The service was a little slow, but the food was worth waiting for. The Sea Bass was cooked perfectly. Wonderfully creative. The atmosphere is a little claustrophobic - no windows. Definitely give a try."

"Came here for a special birthday and we were not disappointed. We were fortunate enough to get the chef's tasting menu and a bottle of champagne that paired well with the whole meal.
Each course was amazing and I appreciated never feeling rushed, which is probably why it took us 4 hours to eat!
It was truly special and I will be dreaming about some of those courses for a while."

"While we had an excellent meal, paradoxically none of our five dishes lingered in the mind (unlike the sort of experience where you eat something and think, "boy howdy, I can't wait to come back here and eat this again!"). It probably wouldn't have mattered anyway, because I am sure the menu changes often. Nothing was bad, but neither was any dish sublime. A special note must be made of the space: it is claustrophobic, since -- with the possible exception of a small square of glass in one wall (though it was hard to tell, at night, what that glass faced) -- utterly windowless. WWIII could come and go and a diner would never know it. I suppose if you wanted to have a sexy late-night dinner at 10 in the morning this might be a plus."

"This place is an amazing place for seafood. Although a bit hard to find, and somewhat limited in seating, if you are able to get a table, do so. The chef is extremely capable with the cooking, with a variety of influences."

"The food at Roe was amazing. One of the appetizers we had with geoduck could be a dish I would like before I die :) The service was also very good; however, our server was a bit stiff, never asked how we were doing as people (just jumped right into "telling us a bit about the menu"), and also never asked what we thought of the food or meal (perhaps they just know it's that good? - even so, a bit pretentious.) But all the servers helped in clearing plates, providing more bread, making sure our water glasses were never low/empty. It would have been really cool to sit at the bar to watch the chefs prepare the food, but we didn't know that we had to specify ahead of time that we would like to do the chef's tasting menu at the bar."

"Roe has both exceptional service and food. We both had the four course guest choice and each ordered different things so that we tried 8 out the the 11 items on the menu. One of us ordered Ono Ceviche, Halibut cheeks with Prawn, olive oil poached Marlin with Lobster-Mango & lemon grass salad, & chocolate mousse for dessert. The other ordered slice cured salmon, scallop confit, cuttlefish "noodle" and braised short rib, seared porcini dusted butterfish, and sponge cake for dessert.
The ambiance was surprisingly nice considering that Roe is located in a square windowless room at the back of Wafu. The lighting in addition to the excellent food and service made it easy to forget about one's surroundings."

"Very creative and tasty offerings. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived so we had to wait about 20 minutes outside in Wafu. Not a problem though as the host somehow found us a table in the crowded restaurant where we relaxed and ordered drinks. Once in Roe, we both tried different variations of the four course tasting menu and every item was delicious. I was most surprised by the dessert. I'm not a dessert person but decided to give the sponge cake a try and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a fine way to finish off an excellent meal."

"Our party if 4 requested the Chef's Tadting, but apparently this had to be requested in advance, which we didn't know. However, they accommodated our request and we were able to enjoy an amazing experience. We were hosting a foodie couple visiting from Ohio and I feel that we were able to showcase for them some if the best dining Portland has to offer."

"We will never patronize your establishment again. We sent a note one week before our reservation via Open Table asking if you could accommodate my food allergies. We never heard back. The day before our reservation I called and a man said you could accommodate my food allergies. The day of the reservation I called and a man said you could accommodate my food allergies. When I arrived, after waiting at my table for ten minutes while the waiter and the owner conferred, I was told I could order only two things off the menu.Moreso, no apologies. The maitre'd said he never received any message from Open Table, asked who I spoke too, and never apologized about any confusion. He shifted the blame to me, as if I never left a message, never a"

"We had been anticipating a meal at Roe since reading the first reviews last fall. We were excited to book a table for our anniversary and arrived hungry intending to order a full tasting menu to experience as many dished as possible.
Upon being seated at the chef's table (which is more of a bar), we learned that the full tasting menu needed to be ordered in advance, so we were advised to order the four course tasting menu and each select different items. To accompany the meal, we worked with our server to select a beverage to complement each course. My husband ordered sakes and I ordered wines. The list was not huge, for example one or two chardonnays, pinots, etc., but the server said the list was designed to go with the menu."

"The food is good, not better than that. The approach is precious and pretentious. The restaurant is way overpriced for the portland market. The food is not on a level with le Pigeon, and the restaurant is far more expensive. They are using an approach that has failed here numerous times: selling the idea that the portions are small so the diner needs to order 4 portions. Each item has great numbers of ingredients making them sound exotic and exciting; but this does not add up to the sum of its parts. For example, their New Zealand salmon would stand on its own very well. 1 or 2 complimentary flavors would be interesting. But all is drowned out by 6-8 tiny flavor contributions which do little more than add to the perception that this tiny pl"

"Chef Trent Pierce has really raised the bar here in Portland. Our first trip to Roe was an amazing full body experience. I once thought I knew something about food and preparation but I now stand humbled by the technical skill and creativity on display at Roe. I feel fortunate that we were able to experience the most provocative meal I've ever had in Portland before the Michelin people discover him. If you think this is just hyperbole, I challenge you to try to keep up with Chef Pierce's on-plate orchestra & I guarantee that if your paying attention, you'll walk out with an entirely new view about food, technique and life. -Kelly"

"Crazy good food. Never had such interesting and complex flavors combined in this way. It was like a great culinary experiment that worked. Definitely go for the delectable, artful entrees. One complaint: the noise-level in the room was extremely high. Couldn't talk to companions without yelling."

"Fantastic! Though the tasting menu at the chef's counter is not inexpensive(by Portland standards), the experience is well worth the cost to those who have a genuine interest in fine food. The fun of watching the two chefs artfully crafting a succession of beautiful dishes was exceeded only by the delectable savoring of the progression of plates beginning with fresh, clean flavors and through complex, then dense lusciousness. Creative, inventive, satisfying--these guys really know what they're doing! Service was friendly and spot on without being intrusive, and we were treated royally. A great, special occasion experience for which we will find many reasons to repeat."

"Excellent menu with original dishes. Went with three people so we could try the entire menu. Every dish was excellent. One of the people in the party didn't eat meat (but does eat fish) and could eat almost everything on the menu.
There were some nice wines on the menu, but it isn't extremely exciting. It would be nice to see some more mid-range Loire whites like Muscadets.
Service was very good. The room is a little bit echoey so it can be a bit hard to hear.
It isn't cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for.
Nice work! I don't think there is a place in PDX where you can get fish-based dishes in PDX that comes close."

"Although a little pricey and with smallish portions, the food was exceptional in taste and presentation. The mixtures of texture and flavors and colors of the food were very, very well done, and the food was cooked to exactly the right degree -- the chefs clearly know what they are doing. The salt tray and egg-shaped butter blob was a nice touch. The room itself (yes, it all takes place in a single, squarish room) is a little less-than-intimate for my tastes, but the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The one thing I found funny was the server only bringing out a single piece of bread to begin. This server kept a close tab on the table, though, and kept bringing out additional single pieces of bread to replace the ones eaten."

"We highly anticpated our meal at Roe, but it was an overall disappointment The plates seemed like someone tried to "think" of outrageous combintations of food but then forgot to taste them prior to presenting them. Overall the flavors in each dish (we tried 7) were neither harmonious nor complementary but rather competing and disharmonious like a chord with too many notes. The disappointing experience was furthered by a group of "tunnelers" celebrating a birthday. They were so loud that the patrons clapped when they got up to leave. The maitre d' was well aware of their rude behavior but did nothing to curb it. Too expensive for a "wanna be" restaurant."

"Cuisine was amazing-for the true adventurer who is a fish-lover. Two drawbacks: The small room is behind a large Japanese restaurant and- 1. There is no rear exit from this small room 2. All the frying, etc. that occurs in the large Japanese restaurant permiates the clothing! We laundered ALL our clothing after we took them off. They smelled very heavily of frying!!"
