Rosa Mexicano - San Francisco
In 1984, Rosa Mexicano set a new standard for Mexican cuisine when it first opened in New York City. Playing a leading role in defining what was then a "new" cuisine to American diners, Rosa Mexicano delivers authentic Mexican cooking in an accessible, stylishly festive atmosphere. Rosa Mexicano"s menu features a range of award-winning signature dishes, including our Guacamole en Molcajete, prepared in a traditional lava rock mortar. Described by Time Out New York as "green ecstasy in a stone bowl," it is prepared table side and served with house made chips, warm corn tortillas and condiment salsas. Rosa Mexicano is also known for the Frozen Pomegranate Margarita, as well as the stylish and festive ambiance that includes our dramatic 15 ft. water wall.

"Doesn't have the same feel as the Rosa Mexicanos in New York, which are all fantastic. I think they need to work on the service level, service was friendly, but seemed inexperienced. Still like it, hope they can bring it all together, it's a nice addition to SF."

"We felt appreciated from the moment we walked in the door of Rosa Mexicano all the way through the dining experience. Our server, Anthony, was great at explaining the menu and even providing a small taste to help us decide among the unique and delicious entrees. The Maitre D', manager, and staff deserve high praise for delivering value and a memorable experience."

"The build-out for this restaurant is very nice; artistic, modern and appealing for the bar and dining areas. Servers have a script they follow and encourage guacamole be ordered but cannot describe food items other than repeating what is printed on menu. Tequila is featured on menu, but again, servers cannot describe tasting notes and their conversation is not tailored to suit the moment. Food prices are on the higher side and do not reflect a uniquely original version of Mexican foods, nor was I made aware if any particular regional foods are featured. This is simply a chain restaurant in a boring sense, but with enough investor backing to do a creative and interesting build-out for this property."

"Mexican restaurants that put this much effort into the ingredients and preparation of the dishes are hard to find. We were in a carnivorous mood and both the boneless short ribs and mixed grill dishes were succulent and savory. Special mention also goes to the guacamole, prepared table-side (with heat to order), as well as the drinks list. We both had the La Suprema margarita and it was the best I've had in ages.
The bar side was hopping (it was a Thursday night), but the hostess thankfully sat us far enough away so that the noise wasn't a distraction. The decor is modern as is the piped in music. Frankly, both were a welcome change from the usual "Mexican theme park" approach. All in all Rosa is a great find and one we'll return to."

"I've been searching for a great Mexican restauarant in the Bay Area for years. This is it. Nice atmosphere. Quality, fresh food that is well made using great, authentic recipies. The service was friendly, attentive and professional. Our drinks were properly made and tasted wonderful.Everything and everyone from management to the busser was at the top of their game. I recommend Rosa Mexicano to anyone that is looking for a special Mexican restaurant that delivers a complete experience."

"I felt like the value proposition was very low. Both the quality and quantity for the price was not very good. Despite the fact that it was a Mexican restaurant, the chef appeard to be almost afraid of seasoning. Both my wife's dish (salmon) and my appetizer (soup) was fairly bland and flavorless. The price of the drinks was absolutely outrageous. It was Cinco de Mayo, so I would probably try it again but if it was the same, I would write it off. I would say sit outside and just do drinks and appetizers, but only iof you wanted to spend a small fortune."

"Went for lunch with coworkers. We wanted to sit outside, they tried to seat us at a sun-blasted table but I pointed out the shaded one and they changed with no problems.
Guac is great but pricey. Apparently the watermelon juice water stuff was good (didn't try it). Had the camarones skewer on rice and, although simple, very delicious (and big shrimp!)
Our waiter could had been a bit better...not too attentive and a little weird...but not terrible."

"The food is consistently good. In my first visit for a dinner, the entrees were ready really quickly, but we waited for a long time for the desserts. On my second visit, we waited almost 35 minutes for our entrees. That is a significant amount of time for a 1 hour lunch break."

"I've eaten in the NYC Rosa Mexicano about 6 times and always enjoyed the meal and service. We visited the San Francisco version on a recent trip and the restaurant looked very nice inside (with a version of the "diving wall" water feature they have in NYC). The service however was just inattentive - restaurant seems as if they haven't got their act together yet. The table side guacamole, which is usually done with some fanfare, was just quietly prepared behind us, where we couldn't see it. We had to flag down a waiter to take our order. The food was good, but a bit pricey for what you got (but that may just be a San Francisco thing) and the service didn't live up to the pricing."

"What a great lunch. Service was outstanding and food was impeccable. The only obstacle initially, is the pricing, which is a bit staggering for Mexican food. But, once you are lavished with a beautiful space, the great service and excellent dishes, that obstacle fades away and the prices are completely fair for the overall experience."

"The food is always good and comes quickly, especially at lunch. We had a great server today but that's not always the case. The one thing that always surprises me is that they are never willing to do anything off-menu. One of our table mates asked about getting a combo of their tacos and was told "we don't do that". Period. So, that's a bit off-putting. There's a little bit of an attitude in general. It's a pricier and hipper "mexican" restaurant so maybe they think they don't have to accomodate their patrons. We'll still have office lunches there but it won't be our first choice."

"Ridiculously poor service paired with ridiculous prices- you are charged for each refill of iced tea and a side of guac costs 14.00! My simple lunch was over 43.00 not including tip! Ridiculous for hardly any food. Avoid this place- it may look trendy but isn't worth it when you could spend a few dollars more for a real meal or filet mignon for that price at Morton's or Ruth's Chris! Don't go here! Charging for refills of iced tea! I've never had this happen! Wow!"

"We ordered their "famous" guacamole as an appetizer and the server asked if we wanted mild, medium or hot. We said, "hot" and then when she went to make it she forgot and said she was making "medium." We reminded her that we like it hot/spicy. It was mild at best. The red salsa had a strange smokey taste and not much other spice. Our entrees, which sounded good on the menu were bland. For the prices they charge, I think they are trying too hard to be trendy, yet they are not delivering the flavors that should salute the food's Mexican heritage."

"Very disappointing. I love the one in NYC and this fell short. The menu is much smaller and other than the great Guacamole and Margaritas, everything else was just ok. Very much wish they would extend the menu (VERY LIMITED FOR VEGETARIANS) and be trained by the NYC people."

"The food was good Mexican, not great, nothing special. We had chips/guacamole, two entrees, and one beer and it was $105. We could have had the same experience (food, atmosphere, and service) for $30 at a dozen Mexican restaurants nearby. Do not here."

"Nouveau Mexican fare; I am not familiar with this chain. I had lunch with a friend, we were among the first diners. There was an extremely strong bleach smell, which did not whet the appetite. Portions are small, but filling. I had the scallop/ pork belly tacos; my friend had the carne asada main dish. I strongly recommend the agua frescas; very refreshing & can fill your glass twice. Friendly service; quite attentive. You will not get chips unless you order their guacamole prepared at your table; overpriced item."

"We had their special Valentines dinner. The food was delicious, fresh, well prepared and nicely presented. Becoming well known for their must-have tableside guacamole service. The frozen pomegranate margaritas are superb - even for people such as myself that typically prefer margaritas on the rocks. This concoction, while spinning in a slushie machine behind the bar, is strong, not sweet nor sour and could not be better composed.
Taken together, it was a really nice experience - one I intend to repeat soon!"

Although we went on Valentines day, the service left much to be desired. Restaurant felt short staffed. Sometimes had to wait a long time for our food and basic service.

"Having been to the NYC location where you're hard-pressed to find any other Mexican food, we were intrigued to see Rosa's open up in SF - just minutes from the Mission and the heart of Mexican street food. But true to its East Coast locations, this is fine dining inspired by Mexican classics with surprising twists and flavor. I chose to try some of my favorites - the fundido with chorizo and the guacamole made to order at your table - as well as branch out to the pork belly/scallop tacos. Nothing disappointed. The host was friendly and the waitstaff (Jose) was very attentive. They even surprised us with a little birthday sundae for two of the women at our table. Overall, a great night out."
