Bistro Bordeaux
The philosophy of the menu at Bistro Bordeaux is an expression of our French culinary heritage, for which we have a profound admiration. The support of our local farmers allows us to use the freshest produce and seafood, just as one would find in the markets in the south of France. The menu showcases the freshness of these pure ingredients through simple, flavorful combinations.
As the passing of fall brings day light savings time with early nightfall, we are always excited to welcome back the great comfort food dishes typically found in bistros; the first taste of the “Braised Short Ribs” and the pervading perfumes of the long cooked “coq au vin”, come to mind. It is, in our opinion, this style of cuisine that offers the clearest definition of traditionally rooted French fare

"Ever since BB got a new Chef, I'd have to say the food has gotten more consistently delicious. the previous one didnt seem to manage well especially during busy weekends. The steaks frites are delicious. This was an issue before with the consistency of the frites either being delivered undercooked and greasy to overly cooked and too crisp. The fish specials now have flavor and overall depth of flavor as before needed some seasoning. I've never really had an issue here with service as the staff here has been relatively consistent and well trained, friendly and engaging. Pascal the owner has a continued presence in the restaurant and you'll see him regularly helping out, carving dishes tableside, and greeting guests. A huge improvement!"

"My dinner at Bistro Bordeaux was an excellent experience on al fronts. The food--I had the Idaho trout with peas, leeks and mushrooms served with purple mashed potatoes; my partner had steak frites. Both were delicious. Although the room is crowded, noise did not seem to be an issue on a Sunday evening.It's an outstanding addition to Evanston dining."

"Duck was wonderful! Escargots was very disappointing no garlic or butter flavor at all. Bouillabaisse had about double plus the amount of potatoes &little else ,of any we ever had in France or any French restaurant we've ever been to . I made a special call to say we had a birthday & told the waiter who acknowledged that he knew. Dessert was served & finished when the check came instead of the birthday dessert we told him again he then brought something, quite after the fact! Not anxious to go back!"

"A very enjoyable dining experience. Interesting, although somewhat limited, menu with all the bistro favorites. The moules frites are as good as any you'll find in France or Belgium. Polite and attentive service. Wine list is exclusively French and rather pricey. We've been several times and will continue to return."

"While I personally was not overjoyed with my food and experience, the rest of my group absolutely loved their food, we ordered the steak tartare and escargot and everyone raved about them, steak ponne frites were order by 3 of us and the steak was a bit tough but the frites were yummy. The duck was amazing and my husband said the trout was the best fish he had ever eaten. Desserts were well received as well, the merengue, pain pardu and chocolate terrine were all very good. Overall, service and food were great for mostly everyone and we would definitely return."

"Our waiter was not particularly attentive to us when compared to the other table he was waiting on. I felt like he did not show us the same amount of attention and did not want to interact with us. He didn't even come by at once to ask how the food. I didn't have a problem with any of the food but it still would have been nice to check in on us. My boyfriend and I were here before on our first date and everything went perfect until the owner or manager of the establishment chased us a block and a half because he thought we didn't give enough for a tip. Talk about embarrassing!!! My boyfriend had a very good tip in fact on the table and did not place it on the receipt tray because we were in a bit of a hurry to leave."

"I went in to celebrate my birthday and there was tension at the table to begin with and the server didn't help the situation at all. He was completely rude and gave us attitude whenever we asked him for anything. I have never felt soooo awful from dining at a restaurant to the point where I have cried. "I am a frequent diner here for a reason: the food is very good. I took my daughter out for oysters (Tuesdays are “oyster night”). We ate two dozen; half east coast/ half west coast. Fresh, briny and firm with three clear sauces(one a bit spicy, one mostly vinegar and one on the buttery side).
My daughter had Coq au Vin which was tender and delicious in the classic French preparation. I had Gnocchi Parisienne à l’Arome de Café et son Agneau Braisé (braised lamb shoulder, Julius Meinl coffee gnocchis, oil cured olives, tomato concassée, confit shallots, lemon preserve, Aleppo pepper) which was melt-in-your-mouth good. Salty, savory and a slight sweetness brought out the rich lamb flavor beautifully."

"A real test of a fine restaurant is how it sustains its quality of food, service and ambiance over time. "Especially in a restaurant like Bistro Bordeaux which attempted to be very romantic (i.e., hanging candles for light, etc.) and upscale, the management should remind tables not to be very loud. One table in the middle of this small restaurant had a young child who was yelling for quite some time. The parents did not attempt to stop the noise which was annoying to those of us near them. The manager should recognize his obligation to all customers to provide a more pleasant dining environment and not permit one table to ruin it for everyone."

"We had a terrific experience. My husband and I made reservations the day of for another couple and ourselves. We were seated right away at our reservation time. The restaurant was full, which is always a good sign! Delicious food. They had the authentic French mustard for our steak-frites!"

"We knew that Pascal (owner/ proprietor) hired a new chef, and wanted to see if that made a difference. We waited a month for him to settle in. we were not disappointed. Menu included dishes ranging from classic bistro fare such as cassoulet (homemade sausage, veal stock, whole lardon) or steak frites (juicy and tender with huge flavor and golden, crisp pommes frites) to more local fare (trout, salmon, lamb shank) prepared simply but with huge and complex flavor. The duck breast confit, on a bed of sauteed kale in a setting of orange/carrot reduction is a must. Do have the fois gras with banana (it works! it's incredible). Very good wine list which our server knew well. Warm dark wood and low lighting adds perfect atmosphere."

"Pleasant look, and nice atmosphere. Service was okay, but had to ask a couple of times to get some extra salad dressing, and something else. The food is okay, nothing special. The prices are a little high. e.g. I had Croque Madam Sandwich, wife had Fish entree. One salad,one Onion Soup, 2 soft drinks, 2 deserts. $109 including tip,plus parking,and coat check.
I would recommend restaurant because it is one of the few French Bistros around, and the food and service is okay."

"Have been here several times and this visit showed poorly. A dispirited woman was posted at the center bar, setting the tone of the staff. Our waiter lacked knowledge and was disorganized. The food was poorly timed, very average, too much salt and lacking in fresh seasonings and herbs. The restaurant seems to be losing its French authenticity."

"Bistro Bordeaux is one of our two go to spots in Evanston (along with Campagnola). This time we chose it for our Valentine's dinner. They go out of their way to dress up the restaurant with romantic lighting, and they also had extended their Restaurant Week specials for the week. We had the roast chicken and the salmon entrees. Both delicious. We also enjoyed the reasonably priced wine that the server recommended."

"The room was beautiful, candles everywhere for Valentine's Day. Apps were superb, my wife had the mussels which were fantastic, I went with the Steak-Frites, it was cooked perfectly but the cut of meat was not as good, (stringy) as I would have expected. We ordered after dinner drinks my wife's came, mine did not, by the time they realized it they rushed and brought me the wrong thing. Handled it wonderfully, hence the very good for service but not outstanding. We will definitely go back, I'll probably try one of the cassoulets next time. We are looking forward to it."

"Our second year to have Valentine's Day dinner there, and this one did disappoint a bit...mainly because they crammed too many tables into that restaurant! It's a lovely scene, with the glass bubble votives hanging from the ceiling and perfectly dim lighting - really beautiful, and the food is always (in our experience) quite good. The service was slow this time, though, and we really felt WAY too close to our neighbors."
