Spoon Bar & Kitchen
Spoon Bar & Kitchen is a modern American seafood restaurant owned by five star, James Beard nominated chef John Tesar. The menu focuses on responsibly sourced seafood and highlights quality seasonal ingredients at the peak of flavor and other dishes that are not fish. The menu changes frequently based on seafood availability and there’s a nightly Chef's Tasting Menu with or without wine pairings.
The restaurant has several unique dining experiences including a built in raw bar, with a Chef's Counter, banquette tables and booths in the main dining room, a Chef's Table in the Wine Room and an interactive Kitchen Counter where you can watch the live action in the Kitchen.

"We were excited to try Spoon based on reviews and friends' feedback. Food was average, service was extremely poor (were seated 45 minutes after our reservation), and noise was incredibly loud. So if you enjoy slow, loud, average cuisine, this is your spot."

"I normally don;t like it when many servers touch your table but in this situation it worked well and I never felt forgotten about. Our main server was very knowledgeable and passionate about his job which made the experience that much better. Food was also excellent and I would advise trying the chefs tasting menu. Definitely a good place for foodies!"

"While the initial flavor was delicious, the underlying saltiness tasted like someone opened a salt shaker and poured it onto the dish. That killed my enjoyment of this highly touted dish. Other than that everything else was top notch. I would have rated the restaurant as excellent."

"Everything about Spoon makes it seem like it will be a fabulous experience. Unfortunately, each aspect of a great dinner fall short. Starting with the wine list on the iPad, the choices are terribly overpriced. The menu choices are exciting, but almost every item is spoiled by too much of a strong spice in one, not enough flavor in another, the texture of mush in what should have been a crisp pancake, etc. the service is friendly, but items in soup are served with no spoon, bread is not served until requested and when it comes it is stale and questions about preparation cannot be answered. It is a shame because there is so much promise in the creative menu."

"My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner, we were so excited to finally check it out. The place was beautiful and the food was great but our waiter messed up our order and brought out the wrong appetizer after confirming what we ordered twice, and the Somm was snooty and cold. My husband tried to crack a joke get her to smile but she would not. Overall, the food was amazing, but the service left us flat. We spent about $250 on our meal, but wished we had gone somewhere that would have treated us better as customers who were there for a special night."

"The Adventurous Eaters Club was very pleasantly surprise with the widely diverse selection on the menu. However, we didn't even use it. "Given the small number of tables relative to the number of wait staff, the service was slow and seemed poorly trained. All of our hot food arrived room temperature, partially due to the fact that entree, veg and sides are all served on separate dishes and arrive at random times as it occurs to someone to deliver it. A beginning cocktail order never arrived, had to request bread, cold dessert also at room temperature.. Our waitress was very friendly but seemed overwhelmed with the responsibilities of caring for 3 tables. Does anyone want to sit in the table in the corner to the right of the entry door? Quite pricey for what you get.."

"Spoon Bar & Kitchen provided me & my Friends with a brilliant fine dining experience! The amuse-bouche was an exciting rainbow of flavors. We were blown away by the Smoked Swordfish & Fennel Salad, and the Crisp Pork Belly & Scallop Appetiser. We felt like breaking out into spontaneous applause after enjoying the delicious, complex tastes of our entrees: Gnocci w/ Lump Crabmeat, Crisp Halibut w/ Tapenade, and Seared Scallops w/ Peas, Mushrooms, Butter/Fish Stock Sauce. The service was very professional, helpful, and friendly. Don't forget to try the cheese & procuitto bread too. Soup Bar & Kitchen is highly recommended!!!"

"The 3 of us sat 1 table from the kitchen, and being a Sunday, our waiter commented that Friday and Saturday nights are for amateurs, which I agree. The food was very complex, and it worked. Octopus was amazing, the Fois Gras from Hudson Valley was seared just right to leave the bottom creamy. Had the faux cuttle fish pasta as a Second which was a stand out...had the Char, Halibut and Seafood mix all again excellent - poached then seared. The the desserts were just a excellent with the mixture of crunchy,salty and sweet at the same time for the Corn sorbet with sponge cake, chocolate and popcorn. Will be back as long as my brother is paying as when the bill came the envelope had printed on it "The Damage" which is indeed,in a good way"

"We had such a great dining experience at Spoon. It was unique and very well done. We started with oysters wich were amazing, very fresh. My wife opted for a half portion of one of the pasta dishes (which was plenty). She got the crab lasagna which was basically a like of crab meat with one homemade noodle on top. It was amazing! I got the halibut off of the simple fish menu which was very well prepared and excellent. We shared a dessert which was a variety of textures of chocolate with caramel ice cream.
Overall, it is pricey but the experience and little unique things they do make it worth it in my opinion. From the sommelier to, the finishing selection of small bites accompanied by the check at the end we were very pleased."

"We have been trying to get into Spoon since it opened. And it was definitely worth the wait. We were seated by the open kitchen so we could see all of the action. We decided on the tasting menu so we could try many different menu items. Everything we tried was outstanding. The absolute best dish of the night was the potato gnocchi with lump crab and truffle essence. We told the chef that we wanted that for our dessert course it was that good. 7 course meal turned in to 10 with all of the dessert courses. Dallas has needed a great seafood restaurant for a long time. Wine list is a little limited and pricy. We will be returning soon. There were several other menu choices that we want to try."

"Food was good but overpriced and value did not come up to price. $44 for a piece of halibut that runs $28 to $32 in many Dallas quality spots is not value. Service was not up to standards. Our wine set on the bar for 10 minutes before mgr finally delivered it for waiter who had gone off somewhere."

"As good as it could be I think it is overrated. The prices are too high and I think it would be better if there were not so many offerings on the menu. The wait staff is friendly but not necessarily around when you need them and rushed to take your order which is annoying when this is ones first visit. I have high hopes for improvement. It is no Le Bernardin."

"One of the best meals my husband and I have ever had anywhere, let alone Dallas. We each did a 4 course tasting menu and Chef Tesar sent out a different dish for each every time so we truly got to taste so many of his wonderful dishes. Highly recommend. Best in class in service and food."

"This is our second time there. The food is delicious but very expensive. If you are going to pay those kind of prices the service and attitude have to go along. With it. That does not happen. The hostess whongreetsnyou is less than friendly. We the got stuck at a small table right by the door for three. The door kept opening and blowing on us. It then took over 30 minutes for someone to take our order- it was another hostess not even a waiter. We had two to three people attending to us... Kind of. When I asked about the tuna dish that comes as compliments to the chef one of my waiters asked "oh, did you not get that?" They need to get it as far as service and attitude goes. There are other restaurants serving just as good of food"

"All of the 5 star reviews are well founded. Bright white interior. The crunchy amuse bouche sets the tone, wonderful mix of flavor and texture. The oysters recommended by Ben, servicing as bartender and waiter, were superb. No accoutrements needed. Then, on to a fascinating combo of tuna steak with squid ink, topped with the buttery foie gras! Fantastic. The wife's scallops, while very good of course, were not as outstanding. A nice selection of different than the norm wines, with the help of the knowledgable and friendly sommelier, made for an excellent evening. HIGHLY recommend for the special occasion, or when you deserve a splurge."

"We had dinner there Tuesday night and I was not prepared for the cost of everything from a glass of wine to the simple piece of fish I ordered. The wine list is very expensive and not too varied - I would have loved to have seen a Malbec by the glass.
The menu is way too fussy and pretentious. We had to ask our waiter to explain several dishes and still didn't find much we cared for. Maybe for a big event or special dinner but otherwise this resturant is too over the top for a quick weekday dinner. They seemed to have forgotten they are next door to a Black Eyed Pea and accross the street from a burger joint.
I will say the decor is awesome, well done."

"There are very few places in the United States that have seafood coming our of the kitchen at this high level. The products that Spoon are the best quality available from around the world. Chef John knows what to do with them all. Each ingredient on the plate is there to give taste combinations hard to find anywhere else. New on the menu was a tandon roasted Hamachi and Maine lobster with roasted beets, beet puree, port wine reduction, arugula and beet foam which were outstanding. The first two courses of smoked sturgeon headcheese followed by a surf and turf of Nantucket scallop tartar on top of Texas Kobe with caviar and pomme may have been my favorite course. They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff to guide you through it all."
