Celebrated Houston chef and restaurateur Monica Pope left behind the landmark local eatery t'afia in its prime to chart a new culinary adventure – a fresh start that is a result of Pope's continually evolving dialog with food, family and community.
Sparrow Bar & Cookshop is a back-to-basics concept that finds its story in the intimate, 1940s-era warehouse building at 3701 Travis Street, where t'afia was born and helped to re-gentrify a now bustling neighborhood. Sparrow represents a new freedom, a more free-flowing and easily sharable menu that often activates guest interaction in the final composition of dishes.

"This restaurant shows Monica Pope's full maturation of food concepts. Flavors mixed are well paired, as are the textures. The bar sampler just may be the best item on the menu, as seemingly simple as it is. But also great are so many other things. And the cocktail menu includes genuinely interesting flavor combinations, not the typical gratuitous fruity cocktails. Give this place a try!"

"Having been to Tafia many times in the past, we were concerned when Monica closed and announced she was going to "reinvent" the restaurant. We absolutely loved Tafia. Would we be disappointed?
WOW.....Sparrow is a real gem. Always excites the taste palates. Never too much and always leaves you wanting to come back and try something else the next time. There is such good energy here and we would highly recommend it to anyone truly seeking awesome food. If you are used to "chain" eating and consider one of these chains "gourmet dining", don't go to Sparrow. A true foodie appreciates the thought, preparation and caring that goes into these dishes. We relish every bite. Keep it up!!"

"This was our first time at Monica Pope's newest incarnation and it was just as pleasing as its predecessors. Glad the "chick" fries (chickpeas) are still on the menu. There's always a vegan option. And Monica wanders around the restaurant visiting with guests. Lots of nice new touches like the magnetic board on the walls where local entertainment is easily advertised. The crispy brussels sprouts side was excellent. And the quinoa salad."

"We really enjoyed the food on Saturday night at Sparrow, but the waiter nearly ruined the experience for us. When we first arrived, he knocked a glass over on a customer at the table new to us, then, while trying to grab it, it fell to the floor and shattered everywhere. He seemed flustered after this and took a while to come get our drink order. When he did come over, he began complaining about the bartender and the kitchen taking a long time on his orders. He seemed very wired like maybe he had either had too many cups of coffee or had taken something stronger. He kept coming by the table and chatting about nothing important when we really just wanted to be left alone for the most part."

"We had reservations for Saturday lunch and were seated immediately. Although their website doesn't show a brunch menu, that seems to be what was served. We were given the bar menu as well as, what I think, was the brunch menu. The order of items on the brunch menu was confusing but we finally figured out what to order. I ordered the Longhorn burger since it had gotten such a good review in the Chronicle. However, it was over-cooked and cold. Others had French toast, onion soup and quiche. They all thought their items were excellent. There 2 large parties there and not enough servers to adequately take care of everyone and the service was spotty at best."

"Despite the change in name, nothing has really changed at this restaurant. Whether that is a good thing or a bad things depends solely on whether you're a fan of its previous incarnation. It is simply another example of a Houston area restaurant being exalted simply because of the chef that works there. The food really doesn't stand out, especially if you've ever had decent food before, and the atmosphere is definitely pas mal. Its simply nothing special and I can't help but feel as though when I go out and eat I should get more from the meal than simply filling my stomach."

"Kudos to Monica Pope for an outstanding restaurant. Lunch menu is varied in price points and selection. This visit we both went with the Build-Your-Own Burgers. Loved the sparrow sauce and beet chutney that I chose for my beef burger, on sweet-salted but, with cheddar cheese. Only complaint is that the burgers were cooked a bit more than the medium-rare requested. The Spring Slaw that I chose for my side-dish was phenomenal: like a walk through farmer's market, gathering all the in season goodies and finishing them with a light dressing. The "Red Flower" non-alcoholic drink I had was great--pureed berries with housemade sweet-sour. Monica was conducting a middle school cooking class upstairs-a nod to her civic pride in Houston."

"My first Monica Pope experience - and it was wonderful! My friend and I started with a cocktail in the bar before dinner. Interesting, clever cocktails - I tried one with habanero vodka and a salt and pepper rim. It had some nice heat, without being overbearing. I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous that evening, so I just had the chicken and peas and we split the house mac n cheese. I was initially disappointed when the peas came out as snap peas, but OH WOW they were delicious! The chicken was sublime...who makes chicken taste that good?? And the mac n cheese was also a great thing to share - creamy, cheesy, everything you want."

"The food was just ok. The mushroom dumplings were very good, but not off scale. The hanger steak was tender and tasty, but, again, nothing to write home about. The mash potato, kale, and brussels sprout sides were not particularly flavorful. There were reasonably priced wines on the menu, which is one reason I give the restaurant a very good score. Also, the cocktail I had was unique and quite good. In fact, I would go back for a drink if parking were not a nightmare.
Given the prices, which appear reasonable until you realize you get supermodel portions, and the mediocre food, I would not go back for dinner again."

"We went to Sparrow for Easter Brunch. We had a very early seating (10:15) and yet the service was marginal at best - both slow and uninformed. The server couldn't tell us about any of the dishes, although a sample of the red onion soup was brought to the table to try. The food was mostly good, although the quinoa in the salad seemed undercooked and the deserts weren't spectacular."

"It was our first time to Sparrow. And on a whim, chose it based on a newspaper write up on Chef Pope. We were NOT disappointed. Only wish there were more vegetarian entre' choices than just one. The Avocado Shishimi appetizer was terrific, the red onion soup was spectacular, the veggie sides were tasty, and the deserts were just right. The wine menu was delightful in the choices! We'll be back."

"Tafia was one of my favorites. When the restaurant was redone into Sparrow, it lost some charm and substance. We ordered only vegetarian items and were disappointed. The brussel sprouts were floating in oil and so much so that we could not finish them, the peas were mushy and seemed liked canned, the milled potatoes, while tasty were full of salt and dairy which covered up the flavor of the beets. The hummus was quite good as was the fresh bread."

"Definitely better than T'afia. Food is much better, but there are as many misses as hits. The "classic mac n' cheese" made with orrochiete (so much for "classic") was creamy, rich but tasteless otherwise was salvaged by the unusual pickled vegetables served on top. The roasted/caramelized brussel sprouts (ubiquitous in many menus now since Uchi opened) and braised cabbage were the saving grace of the night. Houston Chronicle's review of the bison bolognese and kale caesar was way off. So much praise for mediocrity! My favorite part of the night was the inspired cocktail selection and the cute assorted plate of nuts, cheese, charcuterie and olives. I will go back for cocktails, but may be not for dinner. Amateurish service. Good ambience."

"We choose this restaurant based on a review in the Houstonian. We were so disappointed! Our figs and pig were burnt, the bacon was actually black. The kale salad tasted so overwhelmingly of anchovy i had to send it back. My husbands steak was good, my leg of lamb so overdone i only ate half of it. The waiter was so run off his feet and completely disinterested in our experience. It was a huge disappointment. I compare this to our meal at America's the night before Americas 5 star Sparrow 1 star. Same your money and go somewhere else"

"Had a bit of a problem since they never received our change or guests. We ended up having to sit at the front where the bar was and share a large table with another party. It was a tight in there trying to walk around. The cleaning crew was a little rude. Our waiter however was very friendly and he catered to our needs. Food portions were small for the price but tasty."

"Went with a group of friends and had a great time. The food was delicious and the menu had exciting choices to pick from. Their drink menu was truly a delight, not only delicious but also original. The Mushroom dumplings are addictive, the blue cheese and honey sauce is not overpowering in the least. I would recommend it even if you don't like blue cheese. As for the main dishes we had the wild boar and brussels sprouts as a side. Delish! The music was funky and fun, but not so loud that we couldn't chat. Definitely would go back again!"

"Sparrow's cocktail menu delivers; the #1, a sort of pisco sangria, was amazing. And of course, the food was delicious from start to finish. The brussels sprouts are a highlight - juicy in the middle with crisp leaves on the outside. I was skeptical of the mac 'n' cheese with jerky, but it was probably my favorite dish. The jerky was mild and provided great texture against the smooth creaminess of the cheese and noodles."

"This was our first visit to Sparrow to celebrate a friend's birthday and we loved so many things on the menu we had trouble deciding. Such unique flavor combinations our mouth was watering as soon as we started reading. We had several appetisers and entrees and ate tapas style sharing everything as we navigated the menu. Can you say Avocado Appetiser, Bacon Wrapped Dates, Shiitake Mushrooms Dumplings, Seared Scallops and Mac N Cheese with Venision Jerky - we loved everything. Angela was adorable and she made our experience that much more memorable. My sister, best friend and Mom are coming in this week and I hope to be able to try the patio this time. Thanks for another gem, Monica!"

"Sparrow is very similar to the old t'afia. I enjoyed Monica's creations and all her vegetarian options. Definitely order the mushroom dumplings for an appetizer! The two complaints of the evening were that the shrimp and scallop dish was literally 3 shrimp and 1 scallop for $24. A little steep in price if you ask me. And the bread pudding was ok but not great. The rest of the food items and drinks that we ordered were very good and accurately priced. But that one overpriced dish definitely dampered my husband's spirits for returning. We will see if I can convince him in the future to try again."
