Inspired by Trastevere, the bustling 13th district of Rome, Rione XIII explores simple Roman cooking on Seattle's Capitol Hill. Menu favorites include fried artichokes, housemade mozzarella, cacio e pepe, and wood-fired Roman street pizza. A full bar is available as well as a thoughtful selection of Italian & Northwest wines.
"First time dining at Rione XIII and it won't be the last. This place is great. I've been to other ES eateries and this one is my favorite. The room, the food, the attentive service are all great. We started with the house antipasti which was quite good. Then moved on to a pasta dish - Bucatini Amatriciana which was terrific. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was very rustic and flavorful. Our mains included Oxtails alla Vaccinara, Veal Chop Saltimbocca, and a whole orata. Each was cooked perfectly and they were all so good it was hard to declare a winner. For dessert we had the sorbet, the tiramisu, and the chocolate cake. They were a great way to finish an awesome meal. The server was friendly and made helpful suggestions."

"The food, exceptional: delectable antipasto plate, elegantly prepared sweetbreads, in-house pasta just right, and a beautifully seared veal chop (though for me the sauce was a bit sweet). Ditto on beverages: two fine Proseccos, and a bottle of full-blooded Sicilian red. Ambiance conducive for good eating and conversation; subtle but sufficient lighting and noise level conveying energy, not chaos. My personal preference is for no background music at all, but at least Rione XIII's discreet volume was never overbearing. Perhaps the best thing was service. Great food, wine, and ambiance, yes, but our waiter was the ultimate pro. Didn't tell us his name or try to be our best friend, just knew everything and was there when needed. Five stars!"

"Charcuterie was not cured long enough. Semi-raw. One of the pieces presented was mainly fat....which by itself can be tasty,....but not under-cured. Hi-grade fat should be presented raw, or cured, or very briefly pan fried....as in Italy.
Deep-fried baby artichokes were overly cooked...
Seating at the window table allowed us to view the rear-ends of the customers outside seated on stools. Profitable seating arrangement...but not appropriate at these prices."

"The food and service was good. Having lived in Rome, I found the food "very Roman", which is a good thing! However, the room was so loud that it made it impossible to hear the person sitting across the table. We could have tolerated the noise of the crowd-though even that was difficult-but the restaurant was playing such loud music that one could only hear the percussion and base. Unfortunately, while we enjoyed the food and the service, this noise level will keep me from going back."

"We had a lovely meal, great service during the meal, excellent wine, wonderful food...and then the check arrived...and we had to use a new mobile credit machine and handle the task ourselves. While using the credit card machine wasn't difficult, it took some figuring out and was a bit annoying. A meal that should have ended with us feeling content and happy to return ended with us feeling like we were doing the restaurant's job. We walked out talking about the annoyance of the machine and not about the rest of the experience. There are many wonderful restaurants in this city, I'll take myself to ones that don't ask me to handle the billing."

"The fried artichokes are good but the Burrata was stunning. I had the Cacio e pepe which was wonderful as was the Bucatini Amatriciana and the carbonara. The stand out was the veal chop. Unfortunately the dud was the Gnocchi alla Romana. They were dry with a tiny bit of sauce that was not able to compensate."

"We had a wonderful dinner. The four of us shared all our plates so we had a wide range of dishes, Osso Bucco, fish, salads, pasta, pizza, appetizers, and dessert (a gold star for the tiramissu). Good wine selection and fantastic specialty cocktails. Outstanding service. Our waiter was excellent and helpful, and every staff member that came to the table, to deliver food or drink was outstanding. Some of the best service we've had in Seattle. Great time on a rainy Seattle night, wait, what other kind of night is there?"

"As always the food is the best we have had outside of Italy. Very authentic regional fare and varied menu. Especially loved the braised oxtails with polenta and the brodo with chickpeas and parm. Service was excellent and loved the new RAIL check-out system, very fast and efficient. Will be back again soon!"

"Rione XIII does a fantastic job of showcasing a specific style of Italian cooking. The dishes I had there with my fiancee were all cooked fantastically. The house mozzarella plate was absolutely amazing. While the prices for certain items may catch some people by surprise, the quality and quantity of the food are absolutely worth it.
Our server was well informed on the food and wine and was quick to answer any questions we had. The food came out at a reasonable pace so we were able to enjoy each course without feeling rushed nor wondering when the next plate was going to arrive.
The decor has a very rustic feel to it with dark wood and low light making it great for couples or small groups.
Rione XIII gets an A rating from me."

"My first time experience was excellent! We showed up and a there was a two top finishing at one of tables that was going to be used to accommodate our party, however they ended up extending that date for awhile. The staff was extremely apologetic for our wait, which we were fine with. In the end they comped us appetizers & discounted our bill, which we didn't ask for nor expected! It was a nice surprise on top of the phenomenal service the food was delicious! I will definitely be returning for the steak one my friends had, I tried it and the flavors were to die for! They were also accommodating with my dietary restrictions which is always a bonus. Thank you for a wonderful first time experience! It will definitely not be my last!"

"Love the Artichokes. Excellent pasta and the sweetbreads picatta were outstanding. This restaurant has not disappointed yet. The best part is that you can get out there without spending a fortune. the only downside is that it is very noisy; don't go there if you have serious business to discuss."

"Came here with the family including three kids and found excellent service and food. We had many apps, a couple of pastas/pizzas and entrees. The preparations are simple and yet very decadent. The stuffed veal chop was perfectly cooked and wrapped in prosciutto and figs. The pastas were very flavorful and had the right amount of sauce and chew. Some good inexpensive wine choices round it out nicely."

"This was our first time at Rione XIII, and we thought the food was delicious, with the Fried Artichoke appetizer as a must-do. My partner had the ox-tails, which were amazing, and I had the whole fish, which tasted good, but was a lot of work. The only thing that will stop us from coming back was the noise level. It is not a big space, and there was a big party next to us, so it was hard to talk to each other during dinner."

It took quite awhile to finally get our table, and through it all the staff were understanding and apologetic. "We were pleased with the atmosphere and the wait staff. We felt that the menu didn't have enough selections with red sauce, for which Italy is famous. As an Italian restaurant we thought that there should be more options with marinara sauce and similar preparations. The food we had was very good, however, I would rate it a bit below that of Staple & Fancy, one of our favorites of Stowell's other restaurants."

"In short: Good not great... nothing memorable. The menu is pretty limited, so there aren't many choices. The buccatini was heavy and doughy in a rather boring tomato sauce (not spicy, per the description). The carbonara was a bit on the thin/watery side. The veal chop was the best choice in our group... beautifully cooked and presented. The antipasti plate was fine, but certainly not worthy of $10 per person. The service was efficient, but not warm or particularly friendly. With so many excellent Italian restaurants in this area (including other Ethan Stowell establishments where I've had much better food), I would not be inclined to return."

"Lively and attractive spot for Roman-style Italian. We enjoyed the burrata and artichoke appetizers. Pasta courses were larger and heavier than we expected - not a complaint, just an observation that this style of cuisine is more hearty and rustic than, say, Piedmontese. Good wine selection and friendly, efficient, knowledgable service."

"This was my second time to Rione XIII and I was not nearly as impressed. We ordered two salads to start: ruby beets and insalata mista. Both had very nice flavor. I would suggest the beets be served on greens. For our main meal we shared the mushroom pizza and gnocchi with mozarella. The pizza was good, flavorful but certainly did not stand out above other pizzas I have had. The gnocchi was actually a disappointment. It was heavy on the starch and the sauce got lost in gnocchi itself. I would try Rione again as the atmosphere is lovely and the food between two visits suggests that it may have been an off night or I ordered the wrong thing. The service was friendly in that cool, hip Seattle way but I prefer more mom and pop places."

"Terrific saltimbocca, more like a large, succulent veal roast wrapped in pancetta. Very good starters, and competent service, with the exception of the server being unable to suggest an interesting bottle of wine under $50, although there are plenty on the list, he kept bringing high priced suggestions. Nevertheless , we had a great meal and very good wine. At our price point"

"I like Ethan Stowell but there were only a couple dishes that stood out the entire night. On the antipasti plate, everything was okay, though the cauliflower was excellent. The buffalo mozzarella wasn't as soft as it should be. It didn't taste very fresh. From the main course, the mezzo pasta my boyfriend had was okay but was smothered in onions, where they had no place. I had the pappardelle beef ragu special and noted lack of flavor in the beef and the sauce was too light paired with the beef. The dish lacked flavor and was soupy. We had hazelnut gelato which my boyfriend really enjoyed, the other highlight (the only thing that actually reminded us of being in Italy). We also had a couple glasses of limoncello, good but not cold enough."

"Rione XIII is the perfect balance between too much and not enough. The prices were fair and portions were just right. There were no Italian-American gimmicks, just simple Italian cuisine taken up a notch or two, in no way complicated or pretentious. Instead of mints, we each received fresh pasta to take home and enjoy, it was the perfect reminder of a great restaurant. We will most definitely be returning soon!"

Service is sufficient not overly warm or welcoming though. Polite! Would definitely go back, mostly for its convenience to my home. I give it a strong B grade."
