"The overall dining experience was pleasant. However, it is a very noisy restaurant (poor acoustics) so it is tough to have a "quiet" conversation. We went for an anniversary evening out and it definitely wasn't the place for that! Tables are close together, so you are privy to many conversations around you! The food was good, but not served piping hot. The beer selection is good but the wine selection is mediocre. Not a Canadian wine on the list..
We would recommend it for a lively dinner with a group, but definitely not for a "quiet evening out"!"

"Went to Canteen for our wedding anniversay and wasn't disappointed. Food and drinks were great. Will be back to try some more of the menu. Come here if you want a relaxed atmosphere, but a high end dining experience. Not overly big place, so make reservations."

"The noise levels are very high in this restaurant, so if you're looking for a quiet romantic dinner, this is not the place. The service is very good. The butternut squash lasagna is awesome, highly recommended. Also had the Rosemary Pecorino Fries, the flavour was good, but i didn't care for the texture, they were soggy rather than crispy. The wine list is very affordable."

"Nice modern space, imaginative food, excellent server (young woman). 4 of us. Loved the corn fritters/smoked maple syrup, chick pea fries and radicchio/spinach/bacon/date salad. Evening special halibut was beautiful and delicious. Would like to see more choices on the wine list and more Mill Street beer like Organic, Stout or their Lemon Tea beer. We will definitely go back. Great addition to Edmonton and the 124 St food scene."

"I want to love this place. They have cool food ideas and I love the look of the place; but I can't love it, or even really like it. There are 2 major issues with this place: it is too noisy (as in, you can't hear the person you are dining with), and the food/service is mediocre. I have been here three times now, I really wanted to give this place a chance. The noise level here is actually shocking; I think it has to do with the concrete everywhere with nowhere to absorb the sound; if they were to put up a few tapestries that may help. The service was also bad, I asked for soy milk (for my coffee) and was given a smirk, eye roll, and told no with such an attitude I felt embarrassed. For dinner the server could not give drink recommendations"

"Have been to Canteen 6 times and this was the first disappointing time. We ordered our food , which both had very elaborate descriptions, but sure enough they arrived in apx. 7 mins after we placed the order. Way too soon. The waitress never came back until we were finished our meal and didn't ask how it was. Not like the Canteen I was used to."

"I came to Canteen with high expectations and I left disappointed. I think that perhaps I ordered the wrong thing, but in a restaurant like that, every menu item should be outstanding. I had the Charcuterie Plate With Treestone Bread, Pickled Veg for $17 to start. It was underwhelming. Most of the items were bland and I did not like the bread served with it, which is important to me. Then I had the special, which was pork wrapped in pork belly. Usually I do not like pork belly, but the waitress described it as crispy, so I thought I would give it a try. It was not crispy at all. Perhaps it is my fault for ordering the wrong dish, but everyone else did not seem overly impressed with their food either."

"Nice, modern, busy room - the place looks and feels good, and it's a great addition to 124 Street. But on 2 visits so far, the food has been a frustrating mix of really excellent and disappointing. Most recently, both main courses were great - a duck dish and a veggie lasagne, both among the best in the city. But the appetizers were mediocre: mussels with not nearly enough broth, and bland; and bacon-wrapped figs that were mushy in texture and in taste. Same for dessert both times, a bland doughy cake in lemon sauce, and a cherry tart with crunchy thick-skinned cherries and a bland poppyseed ice cream. This kitchen can obviously do seriously good food, they just need to focus so every dish pops. We'll try again."

"We had a great dinner for a retirement celebration. Appetizers were great - really loved the smoky corn fritters. Crunchy and delicious and not at all oily or greasy. Duck entree was out of this world. Dessert was disappointing. Bread pudding was dry and tasteless. It needed some whipped cream or ice cream. Would definitely go back! Pricey, but worth it."

"Interesting lunch menu and very good food. But the service is spotty and the wait overly long. When my wife and I were there, the kitchen seemed completely overwhelmed. We were seated with reservations at noon. We ordered almost immediately and then sat for close to 50 minutes before any food was brought to our table. The waitress seemed embarrassed by our long wait and simply avoided us. Bizarre that she didn't come by to apologize for the wait at any time or bring us an appetizer or even bread for the table. She did, however, comp us one of our dishes at the end.
We enjoyed the meal, and the desert was amazing. I think Canteen has real potential. But there a few kinks to work out on the logistics side."

"We arrived for our reservation while looking forward to dinner for our 10 year anniversary. We were sat in the two seat table closest to the entrance. It was not busy and over half of the two seat tables were still available. As there were many two seat tables open with a bench on one side, I moved my coat to one as my wife was cold and before I could tell the waitress she came over and told me that we couldn't sit there. Her reason was that they attach that table to a four seat table if they get a bigger party. Fair enough. Less than five minutes after telling us that, what happens? A couple with no reservation gets seated at that exact table while numerous other two seat tables were open! Needless to say, we left. Horrible service"

"The decor is sparse, metallic, with a 50's flair. The servers are conscientious and confident. They have descent beer in a bottle or on tap. I started off with bone marrow which is very tangy and delicious. I had the duck squash lasagna which has detailed flavours especially if you combine the toasted brussel sprout chips with each bite. Then I completed the the meal with the white chocolate bread pudding in caramel which was outstanding. Talking to the sibling restaurant owner of Red Ox Inn last year she wanted to open this restaurant as a casual burger place but it's only casual. The food is at the same level as Red Ox Inn. I definitely want to return to enjoy the brunch menu."

"We found the food and service to be very good. We came for lunch on a weekday and found the food to come out a little slower than we anticipated. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 entrees and spent almost 2 hours there for lunch. This was disappointing as we planned to only have an hour lunch and time was wasted waiting for our food. Overall the food was delicious and service was very good. It's a great place to go if you are not in a rush."

"The cod brandade and bacon wrapped dates were great appetizers. The flank steak was delicious, although served cold. The halibut dish with beans and sauce was very tasty. The fish, however, was dry from being overcooked. A little more attention to detail will go a long way to making this a very satisfying experience!"

"Had a great brunch. My wife had the french toast which is really amazing. I had the Huevos Canteenos and it was exceptional. The pulled pork, vegetables along with two perfectly poached eggs and the sauce that came with it made it an excellent dish. I would definitely recommend that dish to anyone."

"We are group of up to 10 ladies who meet for lunch once a month. After meeting for 3 years at a local country club we chose to pick a new place every month. Canteen happen to be our first choice. As some of did brave the terrible weather we differently thought it was worth it.All of enjoyed our meal. Chelsea was a very informative waitess and was a excellent representative for the restaurant . Over all the service was excellent.
The only negative thing I can say is the noise was extremely loud. We could barely here ourselves. Because of the size of our party we were put in the back. That was not good for sound.overall the ladies enjoyed our experience and food. I will highly recommend it to our friends."

"Very noisy, echo, and cold. Uncomfortable chairs and most seating is a long bench which is stiff and not cozy at all. Bar is very modern with stainless steel chairs that are so tiny and uncomfortable. May look cool and hip but not nice to sit on. Food portions are small but to be fair tasty. The. Ambiance is loud and echoes and is drafty. Does not make for a nice gathering for special occassions."
