The Boiler House and Texas Grill & Wine Garden Reviews List

The Boiler House and Texas Grill & Wine Garden

Boiler House Texas Grill & Wine Garden is a true Texas original. Situated in the historic Pearl Brewery complex on the San Antonio River Walk, this wine-centric restaurant occupies the former “boiler house” which powered the adjacent brewery. The menu focuses on grilled items from local farms and markets, with a focus on “Texas ranch-style” cuisine. These delicacies are paired with extraordinary wines from around the world (all available by the glass, bottle and “to-go”), live music and a casual yet energetic atmosphere. The unique list of wines features pricing based on a “retail” model, and boasts some of the lowest prices in the area.

The restaurant incorporates various private dining areas suitable for private or corporate functions and an expansive outdoor patio area where guests can enjoy dining alfresco. Catering is also available at the restaurant or at a location of your choice.

"Top notch food and an exciting prospect for San Antonio. Affordable and lovely wines. Confused by five star food juxtaposed to piles of boxes, cans and bottles scattered about the main floor dining areas. Live music plus Van Halen infused ambient music seemed mismatched to elegant dining. Perhaps an off night? An early-week experience may have kept us from being seated in the more spacious upper dining area. We'll dine at the beautiful bar next time."

"The restaurant solely buys its food from local farmers and ranchers. It has a great ambience. Great experience. A place you would make once or twice a year. It's a little overpriced."

"Went for a birthday dinner and enjoyed our food, especially the red quinoa, golden raisin and zucchini side dish. The steak and lamb chops were cooked perfectly. It's easy to get gluten free options there even down to the dessert. We will definitely go beck, have live music every night."

"Probably was expecting better considering the reviews or maybe it was just a bad night. The staff was wonderful and they really made the night for me and the wine list was very good, pairing well with food. The food was terribly lacking. Each dish I had was off, my first dish was the ceviche, probably a bad choice for a grill and wine bar but I am a sucker for ceviche. First was placing old/soggy popcorn with the ceviche, even the hostess mentioned that was the number one complaint from customers (yet it is still on the dish - crazy); second was a completely minced ceviche that almost salsa-nesce. Second dish the grilled bread was old and limp, really! Had to ask to have it replaced. Could go on but you get the idea. Thanks to the staff."

Food is good but quantitity is somewhat small.
The ambiance is very nice. Wait time was a little too long.

"We went here on Mothers Day. Unfortunately our experience was not very positive, we were seated in the bar area, not sure if there was a main dining area. 3 of our 4 meals were not very good. My spare rib was so tough I had to use a steak knife to cut through it. I should have sent it back. My daughters Hanger steak tasted odd. My other daughter ordered the pancakes, but she didn't eat it much of it Fortunately my wife did enjoy the salmon dish she ordered. Our drinks and appetizer came quickly and were good, but then took very long time for our meal. Maybe the crowd just overwhelmed the kitchen. Our server never said anything to us about the wait, it should have been apparent that it was too long."

"We went for Mother's Day brunch and this was the first time we had been there. We anticipated a good meal and were overall disappointed. We are not picky people by any means.
I had a Pork T bone steak that was smaller than what I could get at a local HEB. Very overdone. THe unfortunate part was that it was $18.00. $18.00!!!!!? .Even my wife was surprised when they brought it out.My wife had pancakes which she enjoyed for the most part.
Service was overall very good except for the hostesses seemed to be bothered that we asked if we could move to a table that was shadier since the hot sun was a little overwhelming.
We left thinking that it was not worth the money and not something we would make an effort to go back to"

"The historic Pearl Brewery has been redeveloped to house chic restaurants featuring professionally credentialed chefs. The Boiler House seems out of place here. More like a chain offering, the food is neither notable nor exceptional.
We started with Mimosas which were made with cheap, flat Champagne. Adding the Prickly Pear and Mango flavoring didn't help. Our food was slow to arrive, and just average. The Pork Chop was tough as a boot sole, with pureed mashed potatoes, the Ahi Tuna was better, but no candidate for awards. The only thing above average was the price.
The ambiance was charming, eat inside or out. But, all things considered, there are far better choices at The Pearl."

"My first and last visit to boiler house was for Mother's Day. We opted for early dinner because we wanted to avoid the brunch crowd....big mistake! They were out of a at least 5 of main menu items. the server told us Mother's day brunch was the reason they were out of many items but that was a boldface lie because I found the brunch menu online and none of the dinner items were on the menu. The steak that I ordered was a last choice and it was tasteless. I give this place two big thumbs down!"

"WOULD ONLY GO BACK BECAUSE FOOD WAS AMAZING. WE HAD THE MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH... THE SHORT RIBS WERE TENDER & SO TASTY! TRES LECHES PANCAKES SO YUMMY! SALADS ARE LARGE & ENOUGH FOR 2-3 TO SHARE.
SERVICE WAS AWFUL...ORDERED MIMOSAS, NO WATER OFFERED, ORDERED REFILLS ON MIMOSAS & NEVER RECEIVED THEM, NO SWEETNER OR REFILLS OFFERED ON TEA, ALL COURSES CAME OUT AT ONCE (APPETIZERS/SALAD/MAIN COURSE) THE ONLY TIME THE WAITRESS WAS ATTENTIVE WAS WHEN IT WAS TIME TO PAY THE BILL"

"Service was amiable, if a little slow. Had the impression that even if the brunch hours ran from 10-3, they didn't have enough staff working before noon. They had the wait-staff making the Mimosa's - we sat right near the bar area where that work was being performed - and they didn't seem like they were being very efficient. The food also was slow coming out of the kitchen - it wasn't that crowded when we got there, but it still took 25-30 min. for any food to arrive at table. Would have been smart to have some biscuits/bread or something avail. until food came. Ice tea glasses were not refilled even once during the meal, although somebody came by with some water one time. Food was very good once it arrived. Then, slow again to pay."

"The price you pay for food at the Boiler House should warrant more attentive service. From the members working the hostess station to the servers hanging out at the bar watching TV, you wonder about what the priority is at this restaurant. The extremely short distance between our table and the next, while providing the shortest route to the stairs, should not have been utilized by wait staff. The chair was dislodged seven times during our 75 minute dining experience, three times striking my knee. They just need training."

"OMG BEST FOOD IVE EVER HAD. Went to Boiler House with my parents for my 26th birthday and its now our new "birthday place". We started with the toasted texas pecans...AH-mazing!! My dad had a grilled salad and now makes my mom grill all their salads now! Had the filet & it was cooked PERFECT and was so tender, AMAZING cuts of meat. Their white potatoes will melt in your mouth and make you crave more. You won't be sorry you ordered them. They gave me a dessert for my bday that had THE best ice cream ive ever had, creme brule!!! One of the Best restaurant in SA"

"The food was good but not remarkable, except maybe that I didn't find it in line with the prices being charged. It is part of the renovated Pearl Brewery shopping and dining complex, so there is a little ambiance in walking around, but the restaurant itself is quite utilitarian and wasn't terribly interesting. Probably a pass for now unless somebody tells me the food or service has greatly improved."

"We were told several outdoor tables were "taken" but no one sat at them the entire time we were there. Our waiter was excellent. The food was good, but very small portions and pricey. A steak at the Boiler House costs more than a similar item at The Palm. Ours was overcooked and had to go back. The waiter was gracious, apologetic and took great care of us. When properly cooked, it was excellent....but still overpriced. The manager came outside, walked over to every table except ours....The porchetta was a plate full of porky goodness and the brussell sprouts ROCKED!"

"This is a wonderful place for innovative small plates designed to share. Plan on 1.5-2 plate choices per person for a group of four. The cuisine was very creative. The grilled romaine and lemon Brussels sprouts were especially tasty. There were lots of interesting meat and seafood choices as well (the scallops had a zippy red sauce that was fantastic). It's a bit pricey, but a fun evening. The Pearl district is really fun -- a wonderfully redeveloped area with great history associated with the San Antonio Brewing Association. Only downside is that when the band started in the bar area, you couldn't have conversation. If you want to talk, go early (e.g., 6:00-6:30). Reservations a must."

"The food was very good. Waiter could have explained the menu a little more in detail. However, he did well answering our questions. Your beer needs to be at a much colder temp. But over all we enjoyed the whole experience and have already recommended it to people we know. Thanks for being open and good luck with the business."

"We went here, visiting Texas for the first time, and upon hearing that Texas has wine! The wine list was extensive but didn't list where the wines were from. When we asked about Texas wines, the waiter didn't think they were "serious" and tried to interest us in other wines. We did want to try a Texas cab though, and ordered a glass each. After that, we got the impression we were being talked down to. He also mis-interpreted our order and only brought us one steak. We ordered the 2nd one, and the management did offer to buy us dessert or a side.
The steak was good, and we did like the ability to order mixed small items as opposed to "canned' combinations. But the experience was marred by a waiter who obviously thought us inferior somehow"

"We sat outside which was nice until the construction started. We were told they are building a hotel next door and it won't be completed until 2014. Once the trucks started up (midway through our lunch) the dust started blowing into our food and wine. Otherwise the food was yummy, service good and wine delicious."

"This was our first time in the Pearl Brewing section of San Antonio and we were impressed. Beautiful area with plenty to do for couples. The dining is excellent in this area, although Broiler House is more of a upscale, Texas place. The food was high class, the wine selection great, and atmosphere think "Dallas" meets "Vegas" which was a bit much for my wife and I from Austin. We love the the experience, but probably wouldn't return but would try one of the other places."

"The Boiler House is a great place to go eat with a group of 4 - 10. The small plates seem to be the best option where the table shares the various breads, side dishes and proteins. The individual steaks looked very good as well. My favorite was the wild boar meatballs, but everything we had was very good. It is wine and beer only, but they have a large wine selection and a very unique craft beer list to choose from. The Boiler House is in the Pearl, around several other restaurants and retail shops - I would suggest going in the early evening when the shops might be open as well, and taking your time to visit the surroundings or enjoy a bottle of wine or beer before you settle in for dinner."

"The Boiler house was hands down fantastic! We started with a spinach salad, very nice. Dined on Red Snapper stuffed with crab for two paired with Brussel sprouts. And WOW, my husband and I agree that it was the best meal we have had in a very long time. The fish was so good, cooked to perfection.... we will have difficulty choosing a different item next time we dine there. The Boiler House is our new favorite restaurant.
Open Table was very easy to use and we had no difficultly claiming our reservation. We walked straight in. Thanks Open Table!"
