"We were greeted warmly and seated right away. The wait staff was VERY attentive & nice. I got the Pan Seared Quail and my wife got the Braised Lamb Shank. My quail was okay...I enjoyed it for the most part, but the "Toasted Orzo & Pine Nut Risotto" was barely warm, very bland. The "Warm Tomato & Fig Jam" wasn't warm to begin with, more like room temp. It wasn't distinct in it's flavoring, I had to ask what it was and while I finished it I really didn't enjoy it. The "Crispy Prosciutto" was wonderful! The "Braised Lamb" wasn't...it was lamb, but I wouldn't call it braised. It was cooked through but still very tough. The "Rosemary Polenta" ...tasteless. More like grits. The "Sauteed Spinach & Mushrooms" were actually very good. Far too pricey."

"Always looking for places to have dinner before a show. Found this gem recently and tried it. Food was good; service very good. We let our server know we were on a time limit and we were out on time, with time to spare."

"This restaurant was a great find. It would be convenient if you had tickets to Playhouse Square, but the place clears out around 7/7:30 so if you're looking for a 7pm reservation in downtown Cleveland they'll likely have availability!!"

"The menu has a great healthy variety from which to choose. Great spot for theatre goers. Our food was hot and delicious; we were very happy with our choices. It will be difficult to choose something different next time. We will be back!"

"We had reservations and got seated right away. The water boy filled up our water and then we waited. No one came over to us until we asked over 20 mins later. The menu was limited to seafood and more seafood. We finally ordered our drinks and food at the same time. Our food came out 10 mins before our drinks. We asked for the manager explaining our problems, ( including the fact we did not have bread) the manager said he would find bread. He left and did not come back. An apology would have been nice or some money off our bill. Will not return."

"The service was slow. We had reservations at 5:45pm as we had tickets for a play at the Palace at 7:30pm. We were just finishing our dinners at 7:10pm! We had to rush to get to the play on time. The service needs to improve if they want to be a good restaurant for people to go to before a play."

"I was very dissatisfied with our dining experience. We were Placed upstairs in a corner booth. Our waitress was fine but it took 50 minutes to get our food. We were given bread once and the bread person never came back. As we were looking downstairs We saw the bread guy go around 3 times to offer bread. My potatoes were cold by the time I got my meal But the waitress was nice enough to get me some that were hot. The noise level was ridiculous . We could not hear each other speak. Very disappointed."

"We picked Alex's because of location - at Playhouse Square. Service was friendly and well-timed. Having valet service was a nice surprise for us. The atmosphere is bright and welcoming; despite having little to absorb sound, noise level was refreshingly low. We had the calamari appetizer - everyone agreed it was excellent. I had the grilled romaine salad, which was good but under-grilled IMHO. Everyone enjoyed their dinners, I had the quail...I was surprised at how small they were, but it was just the right amount. Desserts are HUGE. The tiramisu was great and more than enough for 2. Triple chocolate cake also more than enough for two...and needs a large glass of milk, it's extremely rich. Great for a casual dinner before a show!"

"Once seated and organized, the service was good and the manager was very helpful. however, be aware that placing a reservation through open table apparantly does not mean you have a reservation at Alex Bar & Bistro. I had a confirmation number stating my reservation was waiting for a table of 12 only to find that there was not a reservation when we arrived and the restaurant was full. I was told that the restaurant had tried calling multiple times to confirm my reservation (again even though I had an email confirmation) but could not reach me to confirm. However, I did not recieve one call. Manager was great, front desk girls were very rude."

"Food was good but service was slow and erratic. Our server worked hard but was overwhelmed as she had far too many tables. We arrived at 5:30; our entrees arrived shortly before 7. We asked for the check then, gulped our food down and got to our 7:30 event. No dressing on one of our salads but we didn't complain for fear this would take even more time. The management of Alex needs to dine a couple of times at Cowell & Hubbard to learn the formula for success in upscale preshow dining in PlayhouseSquare: great food AND immediate, constant and accurate attention to the diner from arrival until the check is paid. "Energetic" is a polite term for "Noisy", which was not checked as it was not an option."

"Pretheatre reservation, seated prompty, order taken at an acceptable time ( one hour before curtain). Advised server of theatre tickets and assured we would be served quickly. Meal arrived at 7:10, was very good when I reheated it 3 days later, retained its taste and freshness. Goat cheese in the eggplant, not listed as an ingredient ( that I noticed). Bottom line... not prepared for a flash crowd, even with reservations, food was overall good."

"We have visited this restaurant several times and had good experiences, but this was the first time we were seated upstairs. It was on a Friday night and so the place was busy. We were seated at a table for two and we could not talk to each other because it was so loud. The acoustics are very bad, and the service to the upstairs area is slow even though the service personnel try hard. We will request downstairs seating from now on."

"Listed as a gem due to its theatre proximity. We had heard earlier reviews about poor service & delayed dinners. Not so for us. Wait staff was inexperienced but prompt, kitchen knocked out our courses just fine. I ordered the calamari salad. Nicely seasoned on a bed of arugula. Our entrees were a seafood risotto (not terrific but pretty satisfying), my wife, a delicious salmon in grape leaves with couscous. Wine by the glass selections were pretty good & did not taste like they'd been stashed behind a bar for weeks. Dessert, however, was a bomb. We elected to share a "tiger cake with cappuccino frosting". It tasted like it had sat behind the bar all week! Very stale. Will return as there a few options for theatre dining."

"The management and service was rude and it took over 45 minutes for us to get our food. This was after we told our server we were trying to make a play. When we stated that we ordered at 6pm and didn't get our food until almost 7, we were told that it was our fault for not budgeting our time better. Overall, I would not return and was very disappointed."

"My teenage son and I attended an event in Playhouse Square and decided to make reservations for dinner nearby in the bar. This was a good choice since the main dining room seemed rather open and noisy, but the bar is a lovely, warm and cozy setting with large windows overlooking East 14th St. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. However, the mussels I ordered had an "off" taste altho the broth was delicious. My son ordered a medium well hamburger but it was quite pink inside. Alex is very convenient for dining before a theatre event, but I certainly wouldn't go here otherwise. I was glad we ate in the bar and did not spent a lot of money on entrees."

"The food was better than anticipated and our server was pleasant. The bad news - we got our salads before our appetizer. Then the appetizer came and ten seconds later our main courses arrived. And, although my Sea Bass was tasty, it was only luke warm.
I'd go back one more time as the food was good, but if we had a repeat of our first visit, the second visit would be the last."

"Alex is becoming a very attractive choice for pre-theater dining. We have eaten there twice, and been very happy with the food and the service. Our server, Jordan, was helpful in directing my wife's menu choices to work with her strict dietary limitations. My lamb shank was tender and tasty."

"Our table for two was less than an arms length from others, so be prepared. Although it was noisy, it didn't take us long to adjust. The item we were excited to order was unavailable that night, but we were pleased with our second choices, (lamb shank and the Mediterranean Seafood Pasta). During our evening, two tables left because of slow to non-existent service. Our desert was delivered without utensils and it was 10 minutes before we could get someone's attention. It has the potential to be a great little place but they need to solve the service problem!"
