"I started with their pomegranate margarita and my boyfriend had their spicy mojito and both were delicious! The guacamole with the chips was good, but nothing to write home about. We also had the cucumber starter which was very good and refreashing. I had the steak tacos and he got the fish. It was perfect because they give you 3 so we could share the perfect amount. The dining room is fun with christmas lights hanging from the ceiling and appropriate decoration. Overall it was a great dinner and a fun night out in San Diego!"

"This is our third trip to Barrio Star and we really love this restaurant! The food is consistently delicious, we love the funky urban vibe and the waitstaff is great! My boyfriend and I went to a couple other restaurants owned by the same Isabel group (Isabel's in PB and the Coffee Cup in La Jolla) and we really like them too--we are Isabel fans!"

"They have awesome, interesting margaritas here! I tried the blackberry jalapeno and it was delicious. The atmosphere is bright and inviting, great for meeting friends. The food had mixed flavors and was yummy!"

"For the price of the menu items, the food isn't very tasty. Barrio Star is noisy because the bar is combined with the main dining area. You end up shouting to your dining companions. Given that and the fact that the food is rather mediocre, It was not very enjoyable,.I'm not returning."

"It took 10-15 min to get our drinks after we ordered them. Mine was whipped away by the waiter before I finished it. 3 different servers but everything was so long coming to the table and we had to ask for condiments I think they need to work making service smoother and more timely."

"Dined here on Taco Tuesday and the tacos were delicious, especially the carnitas. Wow! Will come back just for that one. Really cool interior decorations. Only negative was the noise - super loud! We had to practically shout. So do not come to have a nice conversation. We took an out of town guest we had not seen for a while so it was really hard to talk and catch up.

"We really enjoyed our dinner (there were 4 of us). The Bowls were delicious, and the flan was very good. We thought the noise level was a little high, but it is a small space with concrete floors, so not surprising. Overall, we had a good time, good food and tasty ( although expensive) drinks."

"Great tacos... great food! I enjoyed the panko fish taco best, and the coconut flan was exquisite. Service is so-so. Our server kept forgetting to bring us water refills and when I asked her for extra sauce for my taco, she brought the wrong one. She also mixed up my friend and my to-go boxes and I ended up w/ her meal."

"For being a Tuesday night, it was jammed packed. I guess because it was "Taco Tuesday" so a reservation is recommended. The Roasted Jalapeno Blackberry Margarita was delicious. It was spicy and sweet. Very good. We had the Queso Fundido, Fish Tacos, Chicken Tacos and the Potato Taco. All were great. Our dessert with the no flour chocolate cake with ganache. Was amazing. Will definately go there again. Thanks Barrio Star."

"Already familiar with Isabel's Cantina in Pacific Beach, we were looking forward to trying Barrio Star. Our expectations were easily met. The biggest issue, as with Isabel's, is that a lack of acoustic absorption requires you to speak quite loudly to carry on a conversation amid the noise of the other patrons."

"The food presentation was good, the preparation and ingredients were interesting and created high expectations; however, the flavor just didn't deliver. Although fresh, everything was very bland --no real flavor on the meats or sauces, the same can be said of their Margaritas and desserts.
I was very dissapointed by the lack of flavor. To make matters worse, we waited an inordinate amount of time to get our drinks, when they finally arrived they were not what we had ordered. The order was quickly corrected, but then we had the same experience with our food. Perhaps it was an off day for our waitress but the whole experience (food, service, ambiance, venue) was mediocre at best. We will not be going back."

"We were thoroughly impressed with the food, but had to bolt it in about 5 minutes which distinctly reduced our enjoyment. We waited nearly an hour to get our main courses, despite arriving before all the tables were full and having told the waiter we were in a hurry to leave for a performance. Drinks and simple appetizers came reasonably soon, and we were told we had ordered main course items that were "quick to make," and yet...barely got in under the wire to our play at the Old Globe.
Can't recommend for pre-theater; would be fun for an evening with friends when you have nothing else going on."

"We started with the guacamole and chips and although the chips were good they were saturated with paprika on each and every one and stained our mouths. I would hope they would lighten up with that spice because it was overkill and took away from the chip itself. The guacamole was delicious and very fresh. We each had the 2 chicken tacos with rice and beans and that was very good and fresh. It was lunchtime and extremely noisy so if you are seeking a quiet place this would not be it I must say that about an hour after I had eaten I didn't feel well and was a little dizzy, light headed and just felt "off". This doesn't happen to me so there must have been something I had eaten that didn't agree with me. I probably won't go back."

"The food was good, but service was terrible. We walked in and had four staff walk by us without saying anything. After 5 minutes somebody seated us. It took awhile to get my drink. The food was relatively fast but someone besides our waiter brought it to us. The server never came back to check in with us even though our drinks were empty. we had to ask a different waiter for our bill. I asked for the coconut Flan desert out of their two desert choices and they did not have it. We noticed the people at the table next to us timing the service on their phone. It was loud and super crowded."

"I was very pleasantly surprised by how good my food tasted. I went with 3 other people and everyone enjoyed their meals. I ordered an appetizer of spicy cucumbers and I swear I could have eaten a gallon of those1 My Brazil Bowl was really good and I ended up using a spicy sauce from one of my friends diners to kick it up a notch. I like spicy food! On a spicy level, everything was very moderate which faired well for my less adventurous friends. We had a GRREAT time and I love, love, love the long,white pleather booth!"

"We happened to go on Taco Tuesday, and it was VERY loud, food/drinks took a long time to arrive, but our server was great. Highly recommend the Blood Orange & Roasted Jalapeno Blackberry margaritas...also the soy chorizo tacos were tasty!"

"The service was great, but the food was bland. The salsa was too mild, the chicken tamale lacked flavor, carnitas tacos were not crispy enough, and the chips & guacamole were disappointing. Our party of four each got a different margarita and the only one we liked was the jalapeno blackberry because it had a nice kick. We were excited to try a new place but probably will not go back. On a positive note, the decor is gorgeous."

"I wasn't impressed with the service or food. Our server was somewhat off; she lacked energy, described the diablo chicken by saying, "if you want to fight bones," which was off putting. She was slightly busy but she just didn't stand out. The food, well, it didn't have much taste. I had the special- some sort of sunflower crusted fish, it was lacking flavor or salt. The panko fish tacos were disappointing as well; the tortialls were bland and the I expected a flavor packed bite but it fell short. We did however enjoy the Tamal de Pollo, it was great. I love Mexican food and fusion food but I didn't think the two plates were worth what I paid. Maybe it was an off night. Overall two stars for ambiance."

"I had eaten at Barrio Star once prior before bringing my wife. We both enjoyed our meals of the not typical Mexican food. My wife particularly enjoyed the ambiance of the cheerfully decorated dining room and bar. Her only complaint was that the center of the tamale she ordered was barely warm. Still, we will be back to enjoy the food, the cocktails, and the decor along with a great staff."

"We chose this restaurant due to its proximity to St. Paul's church - right across the street. The place fills up pretty fast on a fri nite at happy hour, so I suggest you reconfirm your reservation by phone. The waitstaff were very friendly and helpful. The menu seemed very standard mexican fare, but in reality the dishes were very tasty. I had carnitas tacos."
