Jeanne & Gaston is a French Bistro with a modern twist that is based on a mix of Godard"s family recipes and traditional French recipes.
Diners can enjoy the wonderful cuisine in the restaurant's dining hall that has a modern ambiance with a touch of classic French influence, or at the garden patio during the summer months, all the while retaining its casual and classy atmosphere.
"This has become one of our favorite restaurants. However, the staff changes at each visit, and at the last one it took 1 hour to get to orderlc there were mistakes in the order. WEe were outside and as it gre darker they didn't put the lights on - and so forth. It was like dining in a third world country. Abysmal.r"

"Had brunch here with my wife and son for Mother's Day. The food and service were excellent. The prix fixe was a great value with really broad pallet options. We ate indoors which was fine. The only negative thing I would say is that they seemed reluctant to consider seating us outside, even when we offered to wait."

"We were first time diners here so we decided to check it out for brunch. I requested an outdoor garden table as the weather was supposed to be lovely - we were not disappointed! The ambience was beautiful and serene and the 3 course brunch was delicious! Each dish was innovative and yummy and the staff was immensely attentive but we never felt rushed through our meal. Great find and we'll go back!"

"slightly uneven, drinks weren't that good, the foie gras errine was very salty, the crab and avocado Napoleon, tart flambé and escargots were very good. Best entree was the salmon which was excellent, the other three were good, but nothing to write home about. Desserts excellent. The $40 prix fixe is a good deal."

"When we first arrived the servers were very attentative. The brunch menu was a bit confusing. The appetiizers did not pair well with the entrees. There were aterisks along side of what you could order for the price fixed brunch. You could choose an appetizer with an entree or an appetizer with a dessert. What I wanted toorder was not included in the price fixed so why would you place on the price fixed menu. I settled for a boring entree, some sort of fish dumpling in heavy cream sauce, very forgettable. After the entree it seemed the staff forgot we were there. We waited a long time for two cups of coffee. A refill took another 15 minutes."

"Food was mixed. Salmon, duck and pasta were fine, as were desserts, but nothing special. Service was quite poor. Server was unknowledgeable, no bread, bringing and removing plates was haphazard and poorly paced. Despite 2 reasonably priced pre-fixe options, still seemed a poor value overall."

"This was our second visit to this Chelsea bistro. The forst time service was exceptional and the food while not perfect was good and any complaint was quickly rectified. This time the food was less appetizing and complaints were dismissed. My venison was cold but properly good. When it went back to the kitchen the left the rmnants of sauce on and cooked it some more. As a result, it the over cooked with a strong taste of the walnut sauce. My choice should not be over cooked or cold! Lazy and inept kitchen. Notably the server did NOT ask how things were and we left as quickly as possible and will not return."

"This was my second visit to Jeanne & Gaston. When I arrived for lunch on one of the first nice weather days in months I was asked if I would like to eat in the garden. I was thrilled to sit outside in the sunshine awaiting my friend. He was late, yet I was never rushed to order anything and made to feel extremely comfortable. We had a fabulous lunch. The food is delicious, beautifully served and obviously very fresh. We sat talking endlessly without interruption. It was a perfect afternoon and I can't wait to go back again."

"Had 3 course pre fixe dinner. Really reasonable price for amazing food. Did not leave a morsel on the plate, which I would have liked to lick. Didn't know I liked gazpacho until trying theirs, same for floating island dessert. Had fun joking with the friendly server. Can't wait to go back."

"Went to the restaurant on a Groupon deal, but they didn't treat me like it... Often NYC restaurants pullout a separate menu and treat you like a pyrah. They allowed me to order whatever I wanted for the full value of the Groupon. Good call! We started with a bottle of Syraz, fresh hot bread, & asked Christian for his recommendations on appetizers. Escargot was a little buttery put e flat bread hire spot. Christian was amazingly attentive and on the spot with refilling our drinks and flirting with my 60 yr old mother (who ate it up).
Christian was again on the mark with his next 2 selections of short ribs & lamb shank. I prefer my lamb a little sweeter, but it was tender and fell of the bone. Very attentive for a Saturday night."

"Will definitely return especially when the outdoor garden is open. Original dish was not cooked properly but manager noticed it immediately. He came over to the table and took both dishes away (even though the one was just fine) recooked both orders and presented us with complimentary wine while we waited. This is what a restaurant should do. When dishes brought back they were perfect!"

"This cozy restaurant is an out of place gem in an otherwise commercial part of 14th street. We had the prix fixe dinner, and every item was outstanding. My wife had the mussels, which were the best she has ever had (including many stops along the Brittany/Normandy coast). I had a pasta dish, which was also perfectly prepared. The weather was not warm enough to dine in the back garden, but that location should counterbalance the front street views of a not-so-attractive part of 14th street."

"I felt like I was in Paris, both for the decor and the food. It was a delightful experience. And they even had a hard to find quenelle dish on the menu. It was terrific and authentic. I can't wait until they open their lovely garden when it gets warmer. I will certainly return again and again. I just want to add the service was professional and fun."

"It's all come together at this lovely restaurant. The superb, authentic French cuisine offered by a talented, authentic French chef is derigueur here. It is now accompanied by friendly, attentive service which is neither overbearing nor intrusive. That high level was maintained throughout, despite the fact that the restaurant was fully booked. Nous sommes tres contents!"

"This place has the advantage of offering both hard-core French cuisine but aslo a more "mainstream" selection that will not scare someone not used to a French menu and its complcated terms...! I highly recommend the Duck/orange and the apple beignets. This place deserves a visit. Staff was a bit pushy in regards to getting more drinks but other than that, very friendly atmosphere with (excellent) live music. Enjoy!"

"We were given a gift certificate for Jeanne and Gaston and were a bit worried when we arrived at 8pm on a Saturday night because it was pretty empty. However, our fears went away when we were approached by the friendly waiter and got our salads and a caraf of good wine. By then the restaurant had begun to fill up. next came our meal: my chateaubriand was very salty but my husbands salmon was good. We never saw our waiter again-- not once did anyone come by to check on us. Finally we caught someone's eye and ordered coffee and reminded them of our pix fixe dessert. We waited and after about 20 minutes the dessert came, but no coffee."

"Jeanne & Gaston is a great little French bistro. I've been there three different times. The dinner we had on March 20th was pretty much ruined by the noise level. Apparently, there was a wine tasting event in progress. Although we were seated as far from the bar as possible, it was still impossible to converse.
The onion soup was great, I had it before, and the mussels were great, plump, sweet and the portion was good. The frites accompanying them were well made and my dining partners were stealing them!
Jeanne & Gaston is a good restaurant and the food there is quite good. The service is great, you are made to feel very welcome. I only wish I had known about the wine tasting crowd, I would have rescheduled for another night."

"Fantastic prefix menu. Been here multiple times and every time I"m impressed. French onion soup is delicious and so is the escargot. Short ribs and lamb are so tender, the meat just melts in your mouth! Mussels are fat and filling, and the steak frites is a big dish! Desserts here are so good! The soufflé is the best I've had ever. hands down. Not too runny, not overcooked. Crem brûlée is a must, and floating island is exotic! Our waiter was excellent. he was managing the whole restaurant, the bar, and the entire time was quick and friendly. Will come back again!"

"Once upon a time NYC had dozens of little French restaurants with real French food lovingly prepared and (sometimes) charmingly served. The folks at Jeamne & Gaston are doing their best to restore that tradition. The food is authentic and delicious, the service is charming and eager to please. And the prices are rather humble. Easy to get to. So, GO!"

"Booked the restaurant on a Friday night for a group of four. Service was not attentive, the restaurant was empty, had no ambiance. The decor is tacky, the menus look old as if they had been printed on a 1990s ink jet. I would only recommend as a "walk off the street" type of place if you are not very selective. The location is nothing special, 14th street has no life to it. Do yourself a favor and avoid this restaurant."

"Best birthday celebration!! I reserved my table at J&G for my birthday based on the reviews here on OpenTable and yelp, so pleasantly surprised by the food, ambiance, and most of all the service. The restaurant worked with my mom and friends to make it the most memorable birthday, complete with surprise flowers, champagne and cake. The food was exceptional, delicious cocktails and great service. I would go back in a heartbeat and am so excited to have another fantastic restaurant to go to in the area."

"Went with six friends and it was a great time. We had a big table in the back and enjoyed reconnecting and enjoying the delicious and reasonably priced French Bistro food. The 3-course fixed price menu is a great deal. Service was friendly but spotty -- waiter initially took 2 drink orders, then disappeared for 15 minutes; 5 or 6 of us had the 3-course prix fixe menu but at least one of those was charged the a la carte prices (the cost difference was small enough that we didn't complain, but it's still something the waiter should be on top of)."

"Everything about the place was great, except the noise level. Had I been there with only one other person facing me, it probably would not have been an issue, but at a rectangular table for 6, I could not hear my companions two seats away without their shouting (and therefore making the noise even worse)"
