Saloon Restaurant
Entering the Saloon, a family owned restaurant since it opened in 1967 is a bit like stepping into Philadelphia's past. Dark oak paneling, shiny brass and authentic local antiques create a warm congenial and casual atmosphere. The choice of two comfortable dining rooms each with its own vintage bars make dining and conversation a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Both bars feature a delicious and moderately priced food menu. The menu is Italian with seafood specials such as grilled octopus and dover sole. Saloon steaks and veal chops are legendary. Many prefer a plate of fried long hot peppers to compliment the steaks. All desserts and gelatos are made on the premises daily. The Saloon is a Philadelphia neighborhood bar and restaurant with a national reputation. And the parking is FREE!

"From the moment we sat down through paying the bill, every step was terribly slow. I understand a casual, comfortable pace...but a half hour between the app plate being cleared and the entree arriving...really? Then a further 25 mins for the dessert once it was ordered? Even the drink order took almost 20 minutes. Disappointing this time. Never like this before."

"The Saloon is my mother's favorite place so of course we had to return for Mother's Day. I have been dining here for so many years and come to always expect the consistant quality of their food and service. This event we were serviced by Angelina who was excellent with presenting the menu and specials in a very charming way. Another wonderful visit to this great restaurant."

We consider it the Union League of fine restaurants.
The service is impeccable and the food was even better.
To top it off we felt that it was very reasonably priced for what we ate.
I used to think this was a tourist attraction but I was wrong. It is a neighborhood gem for sure.
We loved our friendly bartender also. He recommended drinks for us that were fabulous.
This is a place where everything comes together. If we had to change one thing, it would be the decor.
But honestly, that is part of it's charm."

"I haven't been to the Saloon in years but wanted to go back to this old place in South Phila. It was excellent. Not a new place with innovative food, and a great alternative to that. "The Saloon was a great choice for our Valentine's Day celebration (the day after). We selected an early 1000 point reservation and were seated immediately. The wait staff was very accomodating and friendly. We both had veal specials that were delicious. We first went to the Saloon back in 1980. The fact that it is still a busy restaurant, 33 years later, is a tribute to the fine food and friendly atmosphere. We will be back in the future sooner than 30+ years!"

"My wife took me here for my birthday dinner, this was also my grandfather's favorite restaurant and he would frequent it quite a bit back in the day. So we were running late for our reservation and the kind folks keep the kitchen open for us. The food was excellent, I ordered the Clams Pavoratti and the Veal special, my wife ordered the Lobster francese. All in all a great experience. The restaurant has amazing woodwork and interesting old time signage and artwork. They let us walk around the restaurant and gave us a little tour of the upstairs. Highly recommended!"

"We had not been to the Saloon for nearly 20 years and for my sister's 60th birthday, she flew up from Atlanta for the weekend to have a nostalgic celebration. The Saloon has not changed much - same great atmosphere, very popular and energetic, accommodating, great bar scene and good cocktails, Lobster Franchese was exactly as we remembered!, and the dessert was festively served with candles and singing - all in all, as good or better than we hoped! "The Saloon is a terrific restaurant.
The menu is great, but wait...the waitress will describe an extensive list of specials and no request is too great for the kitchen. They will cook whatever you want, however you want it.

"Excellent as always. Wait staff never ceases to amaze with ability to perfectly roll through the specials in detail & never miss a beat. Attentive & unobtrusive service at reasonable prices for a restaurant of this quality. Wine list is more than adequate. Portion sizes are generous but not "overkill." Preparation and presentation are outstanding. Downstairs can get a bit noisy, so if upstairs is available, head on up."

"I thought the food was very good, but under-seasoned. I don't cook with salt at home, so for me to have this comment speaks volumes. Just a little extra flavor in the sauce would have been great. Everything was very fresh and delicate, but very little depth of flavor. Make sure you dress well if you go!"

"Loved the spinach and prosciutto salad. Even better the next day. Gnocchi melted in my mouth. Mussels also delicious. The sauce was wonderful. My husbands veal chop was a little bland but topped with crabmeat that was great. He said the chop tasted better the next day. All in all a great dinner, excellent service. We are semi regulars. We go about once per year for past 15 years or so and never had a bad meal there. One of our favorites."

"We had not been here in about three years, due to the fact that it is 1-1/2 hours away from our home. But, it was as fantastic as we remembered it.
In fact, we were talking to a couple of friends that had not been there in about 5 years (since their daughter moved out of Philadelphia, and they were surprised to learn that it was still in existence, and we agreed to go back, because they remembered how outstanding it was."

"This is a classic Philly Restaurant. We ate there with our two kids (3 &11). The food is well prepared. My kids ate pasta and Ravioli, while I had the Veal Saltimboca. (I forget what my wife had). The Veal was excellent, and may have been the best Salimboca that I have eaten! The deserts were also very tasty.
Most importantly, the waitstaff and management treated us very well. The service was on point and friendly.
The free parking nearby was an added bonus."
