Janko's Little Zagreb is the place for the best steaks in the Midwest. Located at 6th and Morton in downtown Bloomington, Indiana, Janko's Little Zagreb has been the home of tender, thick, daily cut steaks and an impressive selection of fine wines and beer for over 25 years. Open Monday through Saturday for dinner, Janko's Little Zagreb also serves a variety of Yugoslavian dishes and top-notch St. Louis-style barbecue ribs. Vegetarian meals are also available. Reservations are accepted and encouraged, and the atmosphere is casual and leisurely.

"Don't go here if you are wanting to venture into new foods...this is a steak/potato place for sure. We love Zagreb's for their steaks, meatballs and ribs. The best ribeye. I won't eat them anywhere else. It's very casual setting though--which we love--great food and wine but casual dress. It IS pricey but worth it."

"This was my first time to Janko's and hopefully not my last. The food was great for the most part. I was a little disappointed in the bread that was served but other than that, I throughly enjoyed the food. The restaurant was a little too noisy for what was suppose to be a intimate birthday celebration with my fiance. Service was very good!"

"We were disappointed in our dinner service this trip as the food was not outstanding in any way, from the salad to the main course of filet and stuffed bell pepper. When asking for box to take food not given the chance to do at table the food was taken away and waitress chose what to include in take away, very strange for us. Was very loud and did not enjoy."

"This restaurant is great for steaks. I've never gotten a bad one. But you have to put up with a kitsch atmosphere--plastic checkered tablecloths and the music of "Queen" playing loudly at the grill. Service is generally friendly but not great quality."

"We had nine people who dined and 7 different entrees were purchased. T-bone was cooked very good and was very tasty. Sirloin for two was very tough and had loads of gristle in it. Porterhouse was cooked perfectly, but was tough. Salmon was cooked very good, was very tasty. Tuna was excellent ! The petite sirloin was good, but was a little tough. All in all, we had a good birthday celebration, but paid too much for meat of that quality. For a place known for their steaks, it appears that the fish took center stage with our group."

"Fantastic steak! No steak sauce needed. Meatballs rock! My husband hates meatballs and tried one at Janko's; he said he can't say he hates meatballs anymore.... he loved them. We love good food and don't mind paying for it...this steak is excellent and gives those $100 plate steak dinners a run for their money.
Now, this place is no frills. It is just good meat eating. The meat is the star of the show not the sides. You get a baked potato, side salad, and rolls nothing fancy just good food. I love the fact that they don't have to make fancy sides to sell the steak.
So if you are in it for the food you will love it...if your in it for a fancy dancy restaurant you will not."

"Tucked away in downtown Bloomington, this steak place is a hidden gem. At first glance, it seems like a regular family or burger place. Nothing fancy. Basic booths and tables covered with red and white checkered tablecloths, with a banner that says "Welcome IU Football Recruits." Nice, certainly, but you don't expect something extraordinary. But then the steaks arrive at your table. And you taste. And, oh what a taste -- something tender beyond anything you thought possible. Just magnificent. Locals know to prepare by not eating anything for a good 12-24 hours before, just so they can savor every minute of eating. It's that good. Flat-out one of the best steak places in America."

"Having grown up in Bloomington, it is entirely refreshing to see a tenured waitress who truly cares about service. Maria has worked at Janko's for 10+ years and it is very evident.
Such a nice move to other end of the spectrum in this town, getting away from the abundance of college students who are in it for the big tip with no motive past that."

"We had friends from Bedford that asked us to meet them at Zagrebs. It was an 1 1/2 hour drive tfor us to get there. It was well worth the drive. A little "mom & pop" place that served steaks that compete with any downtown Indianapolis restaurant. We will be maiking the dsrive again!"

"I went to LIttle Zagreb's with work colleagues. It had been recommended by several others as being very good and excellent steaks. All in our party were satisfied with their orders. I had a ribeye that was done to perfection. It was a little pricey compared to other Bloomington restaurants, but not out of line with fine steakhouses."

"We celebrated our daughter's graduation from IU at Little Zagreb. It was an extremely busy night and we were seated on time for our reservation.The food was delicious. The steaks were cooked perfectly. The service was great. Our server was very personable and helpful even though she was so busy. "The food is AMAZING! I have not tried anything that I didn't like or thought could be better somehow. The only reason I gave Service 3 stars for service, was on this particular evening we had a new waitress and it was a busy night. Normally, I have NO complaints whatsoever! "No visit to Indiana University with our children would be complete without dinner at Janko's little Zagreb!! The Spicy meatballs are a must as an appetizer or a meal! The steaks the wine the service are always perfect! Two graduates down and two to go I'm only sorry that Bloomington is so far away from Granger Indiana and we have to wait five more years before the next two children start Indiana University!! "The food is great, definitely a place to order to steak. The restaurant is very loud and crowed during prime hours, not the ambience of a fancy steak house, more casual and relaxed. "This overcrowded restaurant was noisy, the waitstaff unprofessional (my glass of wine was never served, and after my meal was finished, and I mentioned it, I was asked if I'd like it now!), and the food mediocre at best. The portions are huge. A steak for two could easily have been eaten by three.
The prices were not outrageous, but this is not a high end steak house by any means.

"While a bit of a Bloomington institution and using good meat, there is not much else to suggest this spot. For a place with a $50/per person average tag, professional servers and something other then plastic table cloths seem called for; it was not a surprise that the servers handed the wrong steak to all 4 of us and we had a comical time trying to figure out whose was whose thereafter. The restaurant uncomfortably packs diners on top of each other eliminating any quaint ambiance that might otherwise exist. The salad was straight our of a lettuce bag with a pile of Sysco canned dressing - really disappointing. FARM, Tallent and even Uptown Cafe are a better investment of time and money."

"Incredible food and service. Our table had a variety of food..steak, fish, pork, and duck. All the food was wonderful. OUr host was extremely helpful and our service was exceptional. The wine list was one of the best I've ever seen in the Midwest and the prices were much lower than I've paid at other restaurants. The same bottle of wine I had last week at a high end restaurant in Indianapolis was $90 cheaper at Zagrebs. I will definitely come back."

"We have always loved Janko's but were a little disappointed with the sirloin steaks. We had a large party and there were many different meats ordered. The sirloin for 1 and sirloin for 2 were tough and had spots of gristle that made the steak hard to chew. We ordered them medium rare and medium. For the money, we expected higher quality steaks."

"Went to Zagreb's after the Spring game with a couple to make sure our boys had plenty to eat. First time there and was very impressed with the meat selections you have on the menu. The steaks were simply awesome. The sald was our only moderate disappointment. we came for the steak and potato and won't let a little lettuce get us down. We will be definately be going back."

"Food was excellent(Bread was stale even the table behind us asked if our bread was stale) and the service was good. My only complaint was that we had made reservations for seven. We arrived early and checked in. We were there before some other people and they were seated before us, even though I had made reservations and they hadn't. I overheard one group that went before us, tell the hostess that they did not have reservations and were just passing by and wanted to try to see if they could get a table, and they were seated before us. Finally, after approx. a 30 plus minute wait, we were seated, I understand a 10-15 minute wait, but your hostess was very unorganized and needs some serious retraining or a new position."

"Shoddy treatment: We arrived 5 minutes early for a 6:30 reservation. We were greeted and told that our table would be ready in a few minutes. 25 minutes later, large groups were being seated, but not us. Shortly after I questioned the host and pointed out that we had been waiting for 25 minutes, he apologised but said he had no tables. However, 5 minutes later, a party of 4 arrived - - and were warmly greeted by the host and others on the staff - - a "regular." They were seated in 5 minutes, at which point we left. The restaurant then tried to "cancel" our reservation in order to prevent us from writing them up."

"Nice room, no frills. Very good service at this extremely busy restaurant. I had the crab legs. Fantastic and as good as I've ever had. My husband had the mahi mahi. He liked it a lot. The two others in our party had the sirloin and loved it. Sides were baked potatoes and salad, bread basket. Standard but very good. Impressive wine list for what we thought we were walking in to. Very lively all ages atmosphere. Would definitely go back. And hats off to all the staff. For as busy as it was in there, we were never left wanting for anything. They were on top of it the whole time."

"I have been going here since I was a college student in the 70s. Now we go to take our childre. Outstanding food and service. Crowded. Noisy. But that's part of the shtick. Can't be beat for steaks. Cooked to perfection!"

"The steak was outstanding, and we can now say we have been to an iconic Bloomington restaurant. I read reviews regarding the ambiance and disregarded because of the reputation of the restaurant, but it seemed like they are relying on that reputation and beyond the steaks, not putting a whole lot into the rest of the dining experience. We were frankly disappointed and it will be a once in a lifetime, took it off the bucket list experience."
