"District is all about the outdoor and rooftop dining space. We were seated on the patio and the ambiance was nice. Due to potential rain the rooftop deck was closed. However the sticky ribs I ordered tasted as if they had been cooked the prior day and just re-heated with additional barbeque sauce. The "fried corn" was a soggy half cob that also tasted pre-cooked and re-heated. Mac and cheese was dry. My husband fared better with his pork chop which was cooked well and juicy.

Service was fine although our server had a large party she was trying to juggle with a couple of small tables - generally successfully. Prices for both food and wine are very reasonable so if we lived in WS we might give it another try."

"we had a Birthday dinner with 8 people. We had the choice of 2 reservation times when we called 2 days prior. The times were 5:15 and 7:45; although neither were convenient, we chose 5:15. When we arrive the restaurant was basically empty except for 2 couples, although it did get busier the longer we were there. We had excellent service and everyone in my group enjoyed their meal. This was the Monday after Mother's day, so I didn't understand the lack of reservation times, especially when the restaurant wasn't crowded. The lack of a crowd made it quieter and allowed our group to converse. We all said that we would come again."

"We tried this restaurant for Mother's Day, and do not usually enjoy eating in an outside location, but the weather was perfect, and the dining area sufficiently covered so that it was very nice. The service was excellent and food was great. We'll go there again, for sure."

"Food was outstanding. We were going to be seated outside. It was too cold. They gave us a nice booth, however, the hostess told us of another reservation as if we had a time limit to eat. Everything else was exceptional as usual."

"First time. Didn't even know they had anything like this downtown WS! It was perfect. The Fried Green Tomatoes and the calamari were excellent! i order the NY Strip and it was perfectly cooked. The service was awesome also. Both my wife and I give thumbs up."

"When we booked our reservation for the restaurant we did not request outside seating however we were seated outside. This would have been okay if it had not been cold and if the heaters had gas in them. We were told we would have to wait several hours for inside seating. We chose to go to the bar and found a table there. The food was very good but the original seating was unacceptable."

"As a business man right across the street from you, I was thrilled when you opened up there. Combs Wholesale Produce Company has been on the corner of 9th and Trade for decades. We were there when it wasn't so popular to be there. My family and I visit you every time we get the chance. The food is always excellent and the atmosphere is great. I love to see the old buildings in Winston take new life. I have recommended The District to many friends, some coming from as far as Virginia to eat there. Well done!

"Food itself was outstanding! I had Tuna steak. The portion was huge and well worth the price. My fiance had the lobster ravioli which also was delicious. Both of us shared each others dishes and both of us had stomach cramps all night. I think this occurrence is rare though for the quality and taste of the food. However, I still recommend the restaurant... for a great view of Winston-Salem and great tasting food!"

"Overall good but I was disappointed that the waiter placed the wrong order for me. It would have taken too long to wait for the correct dinner so I dealt with it, but that part was disappointing. "Appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts were good, but too many negatives for an unqualified recommendation. Wine list did not include vintage years (!), and it took quite a while to get our wine; waiter was very nice, but service was uneven; and placement of our table was bad even though reservation had been made well in advance. (My back was right next to swinging door to kitchen, which meant noise, disruption, and cold air.) It would not be my first choice in Winston-Salem for a nice dinner. If it were possible, I'd give it a 3.5 instead of a 4 overall. The food was too good to warrant a 3, and I can't give it a true 4 with all of the negatives. It seems to be a relatively new place, so they may get it together with a little more time."

"We went to this restaurant as part of Big Eat 2013, so our entrees were half price. Even at that price, the food was not worth the price of admission. We had the blackened grouper with jasmine rice and spinach. Apparently their idea of blackening is to put a little out-of-the-can cajun seasoning on and lightly grill the fish. Outside of that, there was no preparation to the fish, so it was quite bland. Nor was there any prep to the rice outside of boiling it. Very disappointing. I would have been furious had I paid full price for the meal. If it wasn't for the ambiance, I would have rated this place with 1 star. We will not be back!"

"Fun reasonably priced spot with good food. All were happy with the spinach and crab dip, the burger, the ribs (the grilled corn side was awesome), the stuffed chicken and pasta, and the chocolate cake. Too cold to enjoy the view but would be wonderful on a nice night."

"Arrived early and were given a pager so we went to the bar. We had asked the hostess to direct the couple we were meeting up to the bar as well. At 10 minutes past our reservation I went back downstairs to find out friends had been seated and were waiting on us. No page, no contact from hostess. Bad start. Inexperienced waiter. Appetizer was tasty. Food was brought out at different times, and one meal was completely wrong menu item. Manager brought out, and ran off before we could tell him. Waited 20 minutes for round of drinks only to be told computers were down and couldn't get drinks???!!! Waited for handwritten check, paid, and left. Inexperienced Waiter, absent management, yet food was pretty good. May give it one more chance."

"We've eaten there once before and it was fantastic. This time, not so much, which was very disappointing because it was Valentine's day. It was not busy, yet it took a little more than 10 minutes after we were seated for a server to come to our table. I had to ask if there were any specials. My drink from the bar took another 10 minutes, and when it did come, the ice had melted in it to the point of being very watered down. Coffee was lukewarm. My husband's steak was bland, the tuna steak I had was very "fishy". It was definitely a letdown, because last time we ate there it was so delicious and the service was remarkable. Too bad."

"Despite the fact that we had reservations and despite the fact that the restaurant was only half full, we were seated in the very last table in a back room. The back dining room was like an institutional dining hall rather than a restaurant with identical rectangular tables all in a row, no table cloths, no place mats, bare walls. The cocktails were watered down. The appetizer, salad and dessert were stale and dry. The price was reasonable, but because the service and food were of poor quality, it really wasn't worth it."

"Everything about this restaurant was just slightly "off." The food was fine, but not memorable (and the menu was not available from the website). The service was fine (but was clearly slow at other tables), but it was clear our server (who confessed to really being a bartender) didn't know the wine list, and wasn't very comfortable serving tables. (He reminded us of his name about 6 times.)

It was also the fastest "nice dinner" I've ever had. We arrived at 6:45, and we were back in the car by 8:05. With an app, bottle of wine, entrees and dessert.

as a side note: after 2 confirmation emails, they also had to call & confirm our reservation AND wanted me to call back. that's not why I use OpenTable."
