Chestnut is an American restaurant. We are in a 1920s era building in downtown Asheville, right across for the Aloft hotel and the double decker coffee bus (Double D's Coffee and Desserts). Parking is plentiful (and cheap) at the public deck under the Aloft Hotel.
"As usual Chestnut's food is the highlight of any visit---the lobster bisque is heavenly and the mussels are divine!! Members of our party also said that the lobster risotto was magnificent and the eggplant stack memorable. The fourth person in our group loved the trout with asparagus too! Easy access via the parking deck across Biltmore and reservations via Open Table being a snap along with the marvelous food make Chestnut wonderful for locals as well as tourists!"

"Kale and fried Calamari Salad was excellent. Very crispy Calamari and crunchy kale. For dessert I had the cheese cake which was very light and creamy with a berry sauce."

"Robert was our server - excellent suggestions and attention. First time at Chestnut - Pickled Fried Green Tomato stack with pimento cheese between the tomato layers appetizer was outstanding! The pickling made it! The petite sirloin was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The best I've had in years!"

"We had a pleasant meal at Chestnut. The lobster bisque, tuna, and lobster cakes were very good. The seafood bouillabaisse was OK. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, but made several small errors such as mixing up the wine orders and serving regular instead of decaf coffee."

"We had family in from out of town to celebrate our daughters high school graduation and though we could have picked any restaurant in town, we chose to bring our group to Chestnut. The swordfish, airline chicken, steak and Sunburst trout were all outstanding. The waiter was very personable and knowledgeable. We enjoyed him very much. The entire experience was very positive, as always. We have eaten here on numerous occasions and always bring our out of town guests to Chestnut. They love it, too."

"As other reviews have noted, Shane is an asset to Chestnut. Both dishes we had (steak & mahi-mahi) were very good. I wish they had come to the table a little hotter. Given the quality of the food & preparation and the location in downtown Asheville, I'd say this place is a winner."

"We made reservations and were promptly seated. Our server (blond guy from St. Croix) was great-good beer recommendations and completely steered us in the right direction regarding the menu. He checked in with us just the right amount and let us linger and order medium plates slowly. We never felt rushed and were there for over 2 hours. The mussels were phenomenal as were the lobster risotto cakes."

"We enjoyed our dinner there. The kale salad was great. They brought us a small cheese ball and that was also very tasty. Eggplant was good but a little too rich with all of the goat cheese. My daughter can not eat gluten and they offered choices including a dessert which she loved, lemon bar with lavender ice cream. Overall good food and I would recommend this restaurant."

"We had a great meal at Chestnut. However, the desserts weren't up to either the price nor expectations. This is the second time we were disappointed. For some reason, their sister restaurant, The Corner Kitchen, has better desserts."

"The restaurant's bright and vibrant atmosphere matched the food --- Modern American with a North Caroline twist. We enjoyed infused cocktails, pickled fried green tomatoes, and our entrees (trout, swordfish, and a vegetable stack). The food was delicious and the atmosphere was pleasant for conversation. The waiter was not very helpful and a bit too eager."

"We had a wonderful late lunch (3pm) here. They pulled out all the stops to make it a terrific occasion and the food and service were excellent. We really appreciated everything. However, members of our party have been to dinner at this restaurant and advised that it is so loud (so much noise) that despite the excellent food and service, dinner is simply not worth it."

"With any great restaurant service has to be spot on for it to survive and this place has to have the best server in Asheville. Shane was absolutely delightful and was great an recommending our selections but had a way of engagement that made us feel welcome and appreciated. The food choices were just right but there are specials that one must try since they should be on the menu permanently... they were that good. If visiting Ashville, go here for one of your dining options... if you live there, then you should already know about it."

"I have eaten here a number of times, and I always gave them the benefit of the doubt the first few times because it was a new establishment, and I understand that it takes a little bit to get the ship sailing smoothly. I can't give them that benefit anymore, as I felt like it was still a new place when I ate there in late May. Just some clumsy mistakes, the kind of mistakes that keep Chestnut from being a really great restaurant."

"Chestnut is more then just food, it is a true experience. The timing between plates allows for great conversation with friends. You do not feel rushed to eat and get out. Shane is an amazing Server. He is fun, entertaining, and builds great rapport with the table. The Lobster Bisque is AMAZING!! Great cocktails too. Thank you for a great experience."

"We enjoyed our dinner which we took our time (3 hours). One issue was one of our party ordered an appetizer (soup) which was served with his dinner entree. For a $250 dinner for four, this is a real faux pas.
I have ben there several times before and will continue to enjoy Chestnut."

If you have not been to Chestnut I highly recommend you try it out. Brunch was delicious and not overpriced like many places in Asheville."

"For years we have enjoyed dining at the Corner Kitchen in Biltmore Village. When we made the choice of their new restaurant downtown instead of our old favorite, we were a little apprehensive that it might not measure up. But we found the food to be very good, the menu varied with medium plate choices, and the atmosphere very different but equally enjoyable. And having wine half price on Wednesdays was a great surprise! Now we'll have to find space in our travels for both venues."

"It was nice to see that they used real chestnut in much of the paneling lending authenticity to the restaurant. Duck confit jicama slaw salad was tasty and unique. The seafood entree was excellent and fresh although slightly spicy (although probably not for the average spicy food lover.) Korean ribs had great flavor but were somewhat dry. Despite the comments here, overall the food was very good and we would return. Service seemed a bit harried (replaced silverware delayed, water glasses empty, etc.) but it was busy, the servers all pitched in to help one another and were friendly and very knowledgeable about both the wine and food. Specialty cocktails were good especially the sidecar."

"As we were looking aver the menu picking from everything that sounded so great, our waiter told us about the special today! Brisket Hash with BBQ Hollandaise and poached eggs!!!! We were sold at Hash, and! It was AMAZING! It was perfect for brunch, and we will be going back to try the rest of the menu! Service was excellent, atmosphere was sophisticated and relaxed, and I overheard the couple behind us saying they were back for the second day in row. Our waiter even recognized them, and that speaks volumes to me!"

"Chestnut has a very pleasant ambiance and the interior is nicely decorated. The food was fresh and delicious. It's worth paying the $3 for the bread basket; the rolls seemed to be freshly made and were great. We had two entrees, a chicken dish and the trout. Both were perfectly cooked and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We highly recommend Chestnut."

"I've been here twice, the atmosphere is great but service and food are fair, nothing to brag about and with so many great places to eat in Asheville this is not somewhere I plan to return to. We spent $70 for two of us to eat and drink and my wife was still hungry following."

"First visit and all four of us enjoyed our meals. Salads were uniquely prepared with fresh ingredients. Entrees were perfect: Korean Ribs, High Country Boil, Mussels in Thai Curry, and Salmon. Not a bite left on our plates. Dessert was over the top delicious. Lemon Curd Cheese Cake with Blueberry Sauce and Apple Pie. YUM! We'll definitely come again."

"While I had heard complaints about Chestnut, my own experience is such that I don't think they are justified. Unfortunately, the service can be a bit slow to excruciatingly slow.
Most recently, the service was adequate, but not great. The food, however was very good. Mussels were plump, well seasoned, and plentiful. The beet salad with goat cheese was wonderful as was the kale with calamari.
Overall, it was a very good experience."

"We live in the Asheville area and love Corner Kitchen which is owned by the same owner as Chestnut, so thought we would try it for lunch. The restaurant is in a very old building but with very modern decor and furnishings. We liked the idea of booths for two. Staff were all very friendly and service was excellent. The food was very good, although I had to send my undercooked burger back. I find that my medium to well done requests often come back undercooked by some chefs! The lobster bisque was delicious and the lobster pot pie was also very good. We also thought the food prices were reasonable."
