"The food and service was great until dessert. Dessert took too long and there was a large gap between the first 3 desserts being served and the last 2. Review 20 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

"Wine Spectator was a pleasant experience. Nicely priced wine selection for being in Wine Country. "My husband and I greatly enjoyed our dining experience at the Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant. The food was very good and the service was prompt and friendly. "We didn't like the menu; therefore, we only ordered appetizers and dessert. Appetizers were o.k. Well presented dessert with birthday candle as requested. The nice writing "Happy Birthday" on the plate was unexpected-- a very pleasant surprise. My boyfriend really enjoyed his birthday dessert. Review 26 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences that I've ever had. I've eaten several times at the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY and have found the experience to be outstanding each time. Thus, I went to the Greystone with high expectations.

There were four people in our party and none of us had food that was good. One person in party had to send his "skirt steak" back because it was too tough to "cut" with a serated knife. My wife prepares scallops at home that are far superior to the ones that I had for dinner at the Greystone.

In summary, the $200 that I spend for food would have been far better spent on wine. We will never return to this restaurant and will only recommned it to our worst enemies.

"We lunched twice at "The CIA" during our week in Napa. Awesome! The Butternut Squash Soup was amazing, as were the Pumpkin Empenadas. The Hangar Steak and Short Ribs were my husband's two favorite lunches. Really, a wonderful time, as always. The only downside was the switch to Illy coffee from the local Calistoga roaster previously used. Miss that local flavor."

Review 30 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was good, but not as creative as what I expected from a restaurant associated with a cooking school. The have an excellent wine list. Our waiter could be best described as cool and indifferent towards us, and this is what pushed a good to very good experience into a poor one. He could not be engaged in any type of conversation regarding the menu, etc. and essentially treated us as if we were an inconvenience to him. This did not seem to be the case with some other tables around us, so perhaps there was something personal going on, who knows. After having our food flung unceremoniously in front of us for 2 hours we left a little confused and disappointed."

Review 33 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"This was one of those, not what you expect experineces. Food was not bad horrible just not notable; the CIA should not serve lettuce with a few spots of goat and lemon juice dressing. We expected that a place that is supposed to be training to be renown chefs of the world would have been more of a dining experience especially at the price point; though it was not too pricy. Service was poor at best; we asked our 15 year vet server for Bordeaux glasses as replacement for our basic Chardonnay glasses and were treated with disdain (drinking red) asked for butter and she pointed to oil on the table we were already using. It was loud; would have been ok with kitchen sounds culinary noise but all we heard were the exhaust fans for the hoods."

"The food was good but a bit too salty for both our tastes. We would have expected the restaurant at the CIA to go easy on salt. Also it was a disappointment to learn that the restaurant is not staffed by CIA students."

Review 36 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very fun place. Great building and overall setting. Staff while arranging for reservations and looking into issues regarding accessibility were quite helpful. Our waiter was very efficient but not particularly engaging or friendly. It was fun to be able to watch some of the chefs cooking and even to be able to talk to them. All the dishes were quite delicious. We liked the opportunity to order three mini-glasses of wine for a tasting and assortment of appetizers. It was folly, however, to think it would be sufficient to order appetizers for two when there were four of us: the excellent morsels were quite small. The serving sizes were on the smaller side as well, but we all appreciated the trend toward less massive portions."

"Wonderful dining and since it's a culinary school they are all practicing for you to see. Very open layout with all of the kitchen and bar areas visable around the eating area. Very nice patio area with view of vinyards but you have to get there early to sit outside. The food was tasty in small portions, highly recommend the "small bites" appetizer."

"Very fun restaurant venue with proximity to the busy kitchen. Looked like most busy restaurant kitchens and it seemed like there was almost too much staff and they were running over each other, and yet our food took longer than I would have liked. Review 45 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"It had been awhile since we dined at Greystone but a special birthday meal was in the offing. I must say, I was not terribly impressed. The food was very good, and the setting can't be beat if you want a true wine country experience, but the service was a bit on the spotty side (the waiter couldn't seem to get the cork out of an older bottle of wine in one piece) and the space is noisy, albeit fun to see and be seen. The restaurant has a nice terrace for dining - very rustic, and we would have eaten there but our daughters prefer inside dining. There is an open kitchen adding to the hustle (and noise) but fun to watch everyone cooking your dinner. For a Saturday night during the crush season (October) the place was not near full. Humm."

Review 46 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We have been dining here awhile now and it seems the food preparation can be hit and miss in terms of temperature when arriving at your table. Quality is very good, but soup and entree's should be piping hot in my opinion. Tasting temptations are always a wonderful culinary delight/surprise. Deserts are consistent on flavor and variety. Service is somewhat inattentive and slow. Overall, If you are visiting St. Helena, this is a good spot for some innovative dining."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Greystone was definitely a find. As a Culinary Institute, the food was exceptional. My husband found the tenderloin to be second only to the Palace Arms in Denver, and my pasta with mushroom cream sauce was probably the best I've had anywhere. Though still pricey, we would have paid at least one and a half times more for food in other fine restaurants."

Review 53 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food did not live up to our expectations. Only one dinner entree was considered very good by our party of four(seared scallops over fresh corn). The tasting plate again had only one item out of five that was tasty (a fried green tomato)...how exciting is a piece of fresh mozarella with olive oil and cherry tomatoes? Also, someone had a very heavy hand with the salt in the kitchen. Our waiter was wonderful and the service was great but we were so disapointed with the food that we left without ordering dessert. This was supposed to be our "nice" dinner in the wine country and a special treat for two marathon runners :("

"Had a lovely dinner in early October 2009 - no students on duty - out of session. Wonderful waiter. Had Alaskan Salmon - fabulous. Review 55 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"It was dark and rainy but there is a nice outside patio which I am sure is scenic and delightful in good weather as it overlooks a section of vineyards.

The food was superbly prepared with multiple layers of flavors which made each bite a marvelous taste experience. The wine list is exceptionally nice with good choices in all pocket book ranges. The kitchen and bar are open so you can watch the food preparation, which makes for good entertainment as well.

There is no carpeting and the openness of the room creates some background noise which is tolerable and does not detract from conversation.

I guarantee we will take friends there again

"We were quite disappointed, unfortunately. We believe it to be overpriced for the quality of the food and the service was also disappointing. Except for the bread service nothing was attended to and request for a refill on coffee was ignored. The salads were OK but overpriced. Our main entrees were also unsatisfactory. The salmon was served with a nice accompaniment but the salmon itself was very hard to find on the plate. The chicken was a fried mess.

We have been to the CIA resturant in Hyde Park, New York and the dining experience there was well worth the price. We also attended the cooking school of a local junior college and we believe the experience there was far and above this experience.

"We have eaten at the CIA in Hyde Park, NY several times.
This was a wonderful additional experience.
We were hoping the staff would be mostly CIA students but that was not the case.
Evidently they only have about 100 students and therefore not enough to continuously staff
this fine dining restaurant.
The staff was very professional and enthusiastic but we missed the informal discussions with the student staff (highly professional) at the several different restaurants at the Hyde Park location.
The food was superb and fairly priced. The wine list is a treasure without trying to overwhelm any ones wallet.
Great place and great if you like to watch the kitchen action. We had an early dinner so our service was superb. As the action hea

Review 72 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Very disappointing. The dishes were boring and some, not even cooked properly. We were expecting so much more from the CIA. Also the ventilation system is awful. There was a constant smell of burnt oil in the air instead of the aromas one would expect. Service was just so so. There are so many better restaurants in Napa Valley that are not nearly as expensive. The ambiance of this beautiful building was not enough to make up for the very ordinary meal. It was so much better years ago.... I hope they can regain what has been lost."

Review 76 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"With eager anticipation we were looking forward to celebrating our tenth anniversary dinner at the CIA. The server was hovering and overbearing and was not knowlegeable about the wine list nor helped with explaining the menu. The food was fried and greasy and not the quality of food we would find acceptable at any restaurant and less so from one that categorizes itself as a premier dining establishment. It was big disappointment and we would not consider returning or recommending this restaurant."

Review 82 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food was tasty and the setting was very interesting. The room looks like it could be an early 1900s convent converted to a newer purpose yet our guide earlier in the day said that it was all purpose built when the school was established in St. Helena. The corn soup was very tasty. The pumpkin empanadas, while good, didn't really shine. The pan seared scallops were perfectly cooked and the special mushroom & pasta was excellent fresh and when the leftovers were consumed the next day."

Review 87 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"3rd time here over approx. 4 years (2nd dinner and have also done lunch); it's always at the top of my list when spending the night in Napa Valley. The food is just across-the-board magnificent. I especially like the appetizer tasting option, mini-bites of five different delectable treats. The view of the kitchen is fantastic from the bar - fast and furious - all in all, I really, really like this place. Only slight negative is that the service can be uber formal - not bad, just not as genuinely warm as what I consider "Great service.""

Review 98 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our visit to the CIA was fantastic, the building itself is a sight to be seen while visiting Napa. The wait staff was attentitive to our needs and the chef made accomodations to our likings. The menu was plentiful even for the pickiest eaters, and the meal was fantastic. However, I will say we were a bit dissapointed as we thought the meal would have been prepared by CIA students, perhaps in their "residency" of culinary school, and that they would have prepared the menu, meals, and visited our table with an explanation of their culinary creativity. When we asked, we were told the chefs were professionals and not students. We would have liked to seen students in the kitchen."

"If you are looking for a relaxed, long meal this is your place. Total time: 2 hours 30 minutes for relaxed, romantic dinner with 4 courses, including before dinner drink. Not as creative in the "vegetarian" category as I would have hoped....pasta.....pretty boring choice. Server was OK-lacking a bit of a personality, service was good though. bread was outstanding! we ate outside overlooking the vineyards & the moon rising, simply beautiful! Inside was packed, busy, boisterous, but not too loud. setting was more than we expected. hostess very accomodating with our reservation even though we arrived early."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I have been there before, but at lunch. I actually was disappointed with my meal. My friend, however, had the hanger steak and said it was just fine.

It seemed to me that the panzanella salad was made with pre-bought small croutons (which surprised me). I did make a commment to our waiter and the chef attempted to make it better.

It was my friend's birthday, which I had noted on the reservation, and nothing was said or done for that.

We had a bottle of wine - which was very good.

It was okay, but certainly not worth the price we paid.

"We sat on the patio in the early evening which was absolutely perfect, a beautiful view. We considered sitting inside but it was pretty noisy, just the accoustics of an old stone building I think. Our food (hanger steak and salmon) were both quite good. The sweet corn soup starter was amazing. Service overall was pretty good, it was spotty at first, we sat for quite awhile without even having our drink order taken, but once that blip passed things went well."

Review 111 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Third time for a special occasion dinner. We were outside for the first time, and really enjoyed the Napa Valley view and much quieter setting. Unfortunately the waiter seemed uninterested in his job. Perhaps he was in burn-out? The main courses were exceptional. Corkage is $20. The variety apetizer served on a tower for $10 per person was not worth the money. Desserts were outstanding.

Review 115 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Aside from a bit of a wait to be seated, this was a highlight of our vacation to the region. The food was fantastic and everyone agreed. From the steak to the fish, we all cleaned our plates. One nice extra was the flights of wine. We tried a couple and that added a little extra spark to the experience. After lunch we wandered with some students into the onsite store and enjoyed a great selection of kitchen goods, spices and gifts. We will definitely come back on our next rip to the area."

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This was our first time at Greystone but it will not be the last. We live in the Seattle area and were in the area for a birthday weekend. When we arrived we were promptly greeted. We requested outdoor seating as the weather was warm and we wanted to enjoy the setting sun. We totally enjoyed the stunning view. I have nothing but good things to say about our experience. Our server was very attentive and the food fabulous. I would and will highly recommend this restaurant."

Review 117 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We were seated promptly with our reservation. The waiter and bus staff were attentive. The waiter was helpful with both wine and food selections. The tapas was a wonderful mix of different flavors and creative items...gazspacho was define as was the deep fried leeks and calamari. Just enough of a nibble. The salad was freash, crispy with delicious fresh dressing but the ultimate was the entree of Sand Daps over fried green tomatoes and a bacon vinigarette sauce. The blend of flavors was remarkable and I can still hold the taste in my mind!! A lovely dinner! Dessert was also nice fresh Strawberry crepes but the entree ran away with the show!"

Review 118 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"When we stepped into the restaurant and sat down, we were not sure if we wanted to order a meal. We are vegetarian, and there was only one vegetarian option. The atmosphere was energetic and busy. The views were fantastic. We decided to order and was pleasantly surprised at the taste of the meal! The flavors were incredible. We wanted to eat more. By the time we were done with our entree, we were not only full but satisfied. Yet, we ordered dessert with the wine pairing. Once again, we were pleasantly surprised. We walked out raving about the CIA. It was an incredible meal, atmosphere, and service. The prices are high and the bill was expensive for two people, but worth the special occasion."

Review 119 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The setting is fabulous in the former Christian Bros Monastery/Winery. Service was moderately paced so we could enjoy the food, ambience, wine and company. We were fortunate to sit outside so I am not sure of the noise level inside. It also meant we weren't bothered by those with children.

Wait staff was eager to offer advice, answer questions and provide assistance.

"Since this is a culinary academy I expected the food to be more than ordinary. It was fresh, it was simple, but quite ordinary. That was disappointing. The best part was their old world, crusty bread, and the chocolate lava cake that was served warm. I will not be in a hurry to return."

Review 128 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The air conditioning broke the day we went, so it was intolerably hot. We were able to sit out on the patio which saved us from melting, and the service was quick, attentive and very good. The food was not as great as I expected, especially with a $174 dollar (pre-tip, no drinks) check. I don't mind paying for great food, but the food was good, not great. We had the professional staff as the students were on break, so my expectations were higher than if a strictly student meal were served. Not a regret, just not as great as I hoped for a special occasion dinner."

Review 132 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"What a great day. My dad did the Temptations starter. It had 5 small bites. A little bit of cream of leek, hummus with a tiny meatball, a date filled with gorgonzola and topped with a little celery salad, mozzarella with bacon and some fried smelt. Truly the most creative of all of the dishes.

I shared 2 salads with my mother. The creamy mozzarella with tomato and olives and a green salad with goat cheese. For entrees, my mom had the salmon and I shared the scallops with my dad. We also ordered the hanger steak, but sent it back because it was overcooked. They were extremely apologetic and sent a dessert to sweeten the deal. Would go back in a heartbeat.

"I've heard mixed reviews about this place but we caught them at a good time. When we arrived there were probably only 6 or 7 other tables filled. The service was excellent and the food was also excellent. About an hour later, the restaurant was packed. I noticed that service wasn't as prompt. It was expected though because it seemed like 20 dinner parties showed up at the same time!
For that specific night, we had a great time!

Review 143 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Greystones is an imposing setting for a fine dining experience. Especially sitting on the patio with an uninterrupted view of vineyards as far as the eye can see. The menu is interesting and is well complimented by the "Flights of Wines". The welcome was warm, the servers friendly and the food was good but not very good as we had hoped. Service lacked the polish and attention to detail of a fine dining experience. (The server had to ask who had ordered what when the food arrived at the table)."

Review 144 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We always look forward to dining at the Greystone restaurant while visiting the Napa valley, however, this visit was very dissappointing. From the moment we sat down we could tell things had changed. The wait person was not friendly nor helpful. We had to ask for several things we needed and there was a feeling of being rushed through the ordering process. I felt that the menu was not very interesting and they were out of one item that we ordered. The food was very "so-so". For a meal costing this much, I expect something memorable, and this was not at all memorable. On our future visits, we will not go back to Greystone."

Review 145 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We very much enjoyed the food, the wine, the service and the scenery. The only negative was the outdoor dining. We had several bees swarming our table that detracted from enjoying the meal. I'm not sure if there is anything the restaurant can do about that, so next time we will opt to eat inside. Prices were higher than anticipated based on what was published on the Open Table website. Overall, good experience and an interesting location inside the Culinary Institute."

Review 147 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The CIA Greystone used to be one of the premier restaurants in Napa; it is a shell of what it used to be. The current head chef's menu really needs a make-over. It is boring, lazy, and lack of imagination. We used to have foie-gras here, venison tartar on grape leaves, fish with charmoula spice rub, quail, ..., where are all these ingredients now? Have they all moved down the road to Yountville?
To start, the pork filling in the wontons is dry and is like a dish from a third rate chinese restaurant catering to tourists. The salmon paste on crackers can be made at home. Only the smelt is done perfectly and tastes as it should. The steak is bad. Have you had a grilled steak with the fat never been touched by the fire?

"Definitely a very scenic view of the valley, building is very unique; will surely recommend to friends. The "Today's Temptation" (appetizer) was shared by both of us; we wanted more(portions were too small),the main dish was good and just the right portion, little bit on the expensive end."

Review 151 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were so excited to try this restaruant and expected to be surprised with very interesting food. We were not. The food was good, but typical fare for a restaruant at this price point, no big surprises. The service we had was poor, which was shocking for this caliber of a restaruant. The waiter dissappeared for a half an hour at a time!"

Review 152 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Greystone. The food was wonderful (though the starter portions were small) and the service worked very well. We were seated outside at our request when we arrived and never were we in need but the service was also not intrusive. The food was wonderful - we ordered several items and shared. This was not our first trip to Greystone but one of ther better ones. Definitely would go again."

Review 153 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We enjoyed our dinner at the Wine Spectator Gerystone Restaurant. It was wonderful to start off with excellent wines. We also had the appetizer sampler which was outstanding. Mu husband had salmon which was moist, tasty and had texture with almonds. I had the hanger beef (sirloin) which was also outstanding. For dessert we had the berry crostada. Again outstanding. We were very pleased with our overall dining experience."

Review 156 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Greystone provides a friendly, open atmosphere in the wonderful Napa Valley and scenic vineyards. The experience, like the establishment can be as simple or complex as one wishes to make it - novices or experts are respected and welcomed. One can simply enjoy oneself, friends or, immerse ones self in food-cooking-wine to any depth. The cook staff is visible and can be enjoyed for their talents in the preparation phase or food/wine comparison can be raised up to enhance the adventure. The food is served in a leisurely style and the dinner can chose to plunge into food comparisons any level of energy one wants to impart to the food presented. The wine list is staggering - from area samplers to the exotic and expensive."

"The food had unique offerings and was very good. I had the gnochi which was prepared diffently than I had ever had it. It was crispy on the outside and very flavorful. The sauce and vegetables were to die for.
The outdoor seating a view was fabulous. Great wine list as well. The majority of the staff were the young people in school there. They did a terrific job.

"The CIA was one of the highlights of my trip to Napa. The resturaunt has a rich history and elegant feel. This was a special fine dining experience and was well worth it. It was great to watch the chef's prepare our meals and the wait staff was exceptional- very attentive and helpful. The meal was wonderfully prepared, was beautiful on the plate and delicious to taste. The hanger steak and potatoes gave new meaning to comfort food and the creme brulee was exquisite- so creamy. My friend had the scallops which were prepared to perfection. Overall a wonderful dining expirence."

Review 162 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"It has been four years since I have visited this restaurant. I don't know what the change has been, but I found the food not to be anything special as it had been in the past. I felt it was over-priced for what I had. The food itself was ok, but there are far better restaurants in the area. The wait staff was unfamilar with the food and not able to answer questions about the preparation. When asked where a specific wine was from they were unable to answer and did not offer to find the answer. This was a fabulous restaurant with new twists on food and fabulous wine flights. I now find it quiet unexceptional and would not recommend stopping here for any meal."
