Review 4 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Unfortunatly dissapointing. We ordered the Chef's choice appy's without knowledge of what was on them, had we known, we would not have ordered it. My steak was good, my wifes chicken was pink and the salad/crutons SOAKED in olive oil. Our desert was good though.

This restaurant was highly recommended to us, I would not recommend it for the price."

Review 5 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Our view from the outdoor terrace was amazing. Our food was tasty and creatively prepared. The service left a lot to be desired: our server rarely came by the table; I had to ask that our empty appetizer plates be removed AFTER our main dishes had already arrived. I had wanted to see how long it would take before someone on staff noticed all the empty dishes pushed into the center of our table and removed them. At some point I decided waiting for them to wait on me was ridiculous--since it wasn't happening--so I made my request. For the price I paid for the meal, I would expect better service. Consequently, I am not inclined to patronize the Greystone again. A plethora of exceptional restuarants abound in Napa Valley."

Review 7 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We were expecting a lot more from this restaurant. My husband and I sat at the bar so we would have a clear view into the kitchen. The chefs did not seem all that interested in their food preparation. Even though we were the only two people at the bar, they never came over to explain anything they were cooking or tell us anything about the kitchen facility. Many parts of the kitchen were not visible from the dining area/bar. The food was well prepared, but it was nothing special. In fact, both our plates had food splashed on the side. For this price, we were expecting more careful plating and attention to detail."

Review 12 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"For all the effort they put into making great food that is beautiful to look at and tastes great, they should also put the same effort into training the staff how a professional wait staff operates. Our waiter was a student in the wine program and had more then one awkward moment, interrupting our conversation at one point, removing a dish when it wasn't finished at another."

Review 13 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The service fell short. They looked to be short handed(server & bus people) While everything that we had was very good, the menu was strange and the menu had very little description of choices The server was so busy that we got very little attention. Our meal(2 people )took 3 hours (no dessert) and we were not trying to have a slow paced dinner That said the chairs were very uncomfortable As a short person my feet did not reach the ground .Very uncomfortable after such a long time."

Review 19 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The overall experience at Greystone was great! Amazing sardine appetizer.
Although this is named the Wine Spectator restaurant, I was not impressed with the by-the-glass or 375ml bottle wine list. It was small and skewed to large producers - not what I would have expected from a wine-focussed restaurant. The bottle list was very good.

THe food and service were excellent, and I would return to Greystone for a memorable meal."

Review 20 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I hadn't been to Greystone for a few years, and when we recieved a gift certificate from a friend, we were excited about returning. But we were disappointed this time. The food was definitely good, but not dazzling (which is how I remembered it being in years past). The service was definitely rushed...our server didn't seem to have time to listen to what we wanted in a wine before she leapt into her suggestions, and she seemed vaguely distracted throughout the meal. Perhaps the difference is that, in the past, we have come in the Winter, and today's visit was on Saturday night in late Spring. In any event, with so many fine restaurants to choose from in the area, I am not sure that I would be a strong advocate of Greystone right now."

"While I was disappointed to learn the students do not cook on the weekends (and sad to see the menu hadn't changed in some time) we quite enjoyed Greystone. "We were looking forward to dinner at the Wine Spectator Greystone on our honeymoon. The atmosphere is very nice and the service is very good. Review 32 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Dining on the patio is highly recommended. Food was great, including the trusted creme brulee which we always order. Service was disappointing. Server refused to tell us what were the Temptations of the day. I have probably attended this restaurant at least a dozen times asking about the Temptations without any issue from the servers. Needless to say, we did not order the Temptations and do not recommend it. The diner next to us overheard the conversation and she told us she received the same poor service inquiring about the Temptations. Server was also not knowledgeable about the wine list and didn't provide helpful suggestions."

"Food quality was excellent... Waitstaff very friendly and well spoken about the school. Wine list and choices are just fabulous. I have nothing bad to say about my experience there. It was a nice sunny day.. sat on the patio that overlooks the mountains and grapevines. How much more idyllic can it be?"

"There were 4 of us for dinner. I had the chicken, it was not cooked thoroughly. The thighs and legs were still reddish, but the breast that was cooked, was very tasty. The rest of the chicken needed to cook longer. The others said their dinners were OK."

Review 42 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"maybe because it was the sunday on memorial weekend, the restaurant seemed super under staffed. our reservation was at 8 and we arrived promptly, let the hostess know, but were not seated until 820pm while the restaurant was half empty. between courses we had to wait at least 20 minutes and the waiter came by only once in a while because he was dancing around so many tables at once. but with all that being said, the food was still very good as expected, presentation was also very well made. we still enjoyed the night even though dinner took over 3 hours!!"

Review 43 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The menu was a little on the short side. Stay away from the “Today's Temptations” appetizer. I was not impressed with any of the items and the price was too high for the dish and none of the items stood well alone. For the main dish I had the Salmon, which was very good but at $30. I felt the cost was too high for this type of dish. Overall I was pleased with my dining experience but it left my pocket book a little empty."

Review 45 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Food was wonderful. This is a good place to to try something out of your usual comfort zone and know that it will be delicious. We were 4 foodies and 1 timid novice who each ordered something different and shared our food as well as our opinions on the preparation. Appetizers were a delicious adventure - we did the chef's choice. Varied and tasty. The entrees appeared small at first but were quit filling, nicely presented with a variety of garnishes. We shared 2 dessets amongst us. They were a nice finish, not too rich and overwhelming as at many establishments but a delicious finish to lovely meal. The wine list was excellent as to be expected but not a lot of selection in the low to medium price range in our opinion.Service wasvery good"

"A dream come true..........romantic, delicious, two hour dining experience with my husband of 26 years. Ambiance so special and the chefs's pick apps were out of this world. Creme brule the most rich and smooth I've ever tasted.......the ending to a perfect meal.

Review 53 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Great outdoor dining experience (cushions on the outdoor chairs would have been awesome). Our waiter was unable to adequately service his tables and our service, as well as his other tables seemed to be less than adequate, especially at this type of venue. The food was spot on and we had a very enjoyable time. When I made the reservation I noted it was my wife's birthday and our dessert was presented appropriately with out any discussion.

Overall it was as we anticipated less the service which is out of control of the Chef's who did a wonderful job of presentation/taste/blending of flavors and unique ingredients. We spoke with one of the Chef's after our meal and he was gracious and helpful which added to the experience."

Review 55 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I was so impressed by the food and service. The Crispy Dumplings were delicious; what a great idea to have it on a cilantro salad. The flavors of the ground pork and cilantro were harmonious; my mother and I fell silent while savoring this appetizer. I especially enjoyed the Mojito with fruit blend. All of the ingredients were equally balanced so that not a single one overpowered the others. Our entrees were fabulous: Hangar Steak with baby artichokes and mushrooms; Grilled Lamb - tender and full of flavor. Finishing our lunch, the creme brulee and 3-berry cobbler (with microbasil!!!) sent us over the edge; we were in heaven! I will definitely go back; it is worth the drive time from Salinas."

"The food and ambiance was great! The service was a little bit slow but the staff was friendly. "I was impressed by the restaurant's ambiance. But on the day that I went, it was 90+F outside and the air conditioning was not working properly. It got very hot inside. For me, it made the experience not so good. Then the service was getting slower because of all the people. There were tables getting their food before my table even though they came later than us. So slow service and broken A/C ruined the lunch experience."

Review 62 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I have to say that I was disappointed. We went on a Friday night, 6:30 reservations. No one was sitting on the beautiful patio, so we asked if we could sit out there. The hostess said that actually, she had us seated inside, so we assumed the outside was reserved for other diners. This was not the case, as we noticed there were many open tables available in the course of the evening. The food was unremarkable, and I was disappointed that the chef's appetizers were dominated by fish. I like fish myself, but one member of our party does not; I just felt there should be more variety. The service was slow, and we had to keep reminding them of requests we'd made (more bread, water, etc) It was a gorgeous restaurant, but I won't return."

Review 63 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This restaurant came highly recommended. As new residents to Napa Valley, we were excited to visit and eat here. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere very comfortable. Our meal is best described as inconsistent. Considering this is "Wine Specator's" Greystone Restaurant, we were surprised to learn they did not have burgundy glasses from which to drink pinot. Yes we like our pinot in pinot glasses. One salad (greens and goat cheese) was bland and another app of greens, toast with sardines was spectacular. Chickpea soup was outstanding with wonderful flavors. Steak was mediocre. Pasta was good, but not great. We are glad we visited but likely won't return. I recommend Celadon in Napa instead."

"We have eaten here many times, mostly for special occassions and have not been disppointed. Located in the heart of the Napa/St. Helena wine country, the scenery is spectacular! There is a huge open kitchen in the center of the dining room with seperate pastry and prep stations. The menu varies and utilizes seasonal ingredients."

Review 65 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"During our first trip to Sonoma/Napa, we heard and read great things about Wine Spectator Greystone as a special place. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. After noting on the Open Table reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary, no acknowledgement of the special evening was mentioned. Our server Rudy was overwhelmed with his section and seemed to be paying attention to only a few of his tables. We had a lot of service from the bus staff. The food was OK, but not outstanding. My seafood dish seemed to have spent too much time under a heat lamp and my mussels were stringy and overcooked. Rudy did get better, but only when we were one of two active tables left. Our impression was a resounding "eh?""

Review 69 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We just had lunch at Greystone on Friday and it was truly a perfect lunch. The atmosphere inside is as gorgeous as outside with all the custom iron work, artistic table centerpieces, being able to view the kitchen from the bar, and more. The waitstaff could not have been more attentive and the food was wonderful. (Course, the Napa valley views make for a spectacular backdrop!)"

Review 71 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Basically a good experience. Waiter was helpful on the food and wine selections, but as typical of wine country restaurants, poured the wine too fast to try to get you to buy another bottle.

Only bad "taste" was at check in when the receptionist's attitude was a turn off. She assumed no familiarity with restaurant --- maybe because it was booked through open table or maybe just because it is a touristy kind of place. But she should not have made any assumptions as we are St. Helena residents and but for being hungry and booking specifically for a place to eat outside on a beautiful day, we could easily have walked because of her surly attitude."

Review 72 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The restaurant is located at the Culinary Institute of America in the Napa Valley of California. The drive through the Napa Valley and the majestic school create an ambience that can't be beat. The food was good and I especially enjoyed the Tasting Temptations which was a five bite appetizer priced per person and selected by the Chef. As expected there was a very good wine list. Keep in mind that the wait staff and kitchen staff are in training and I believe you'll be satisfied."

Review 74 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This is my 3rd or 4th time dining there for lunch. Food is always impeccably prepared and use of unusual ingredients is done in a way that shows the skill of the chef - ingredients compliment the dish instead of seeming forced for the sake of being trendy. For lunch the portions are substantial so this should be your big meal for the day. Exceptional preparation of lamb and beef, though I had a taste of the vegetarian ravioli and they were great as well. "Today's Temptations" (an appetizer sampler) are always a great start. Without a doubt, a highlight of wine country."

Review 79 for Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The overall experience left us a bit disappointed. The setting and building were very nice and impressive. The service was adequate, but the waitstaff did not feel very inviting or warm. It seemed a bit too serious & stoic. We would have appreciated a bit more of a dialogue & interest in how we were doing, what we were thinking, were we enjoying the evening. The food was good, but not memorable for what we expected being the training ground for the country's future top chefs. The dessert was excellent, but the rest of the meal seemed a bit underwhelming considering our expectations. Finally, we had mentioned in the reservation that we were celebrating an anniversary, but no mention was made nor any acknowledgement given."
