"We went for lunch on a Thursday. Excellent service, food was very good and we were out in 45 minutes even with dessert. A bit pricey....be sure to try the cheesecake-very unique presentation."

"I believe in tipping but honestly can't stand when it's automatically added. This is a great place to eat and good service they don't need to automatically add the service charge. This is a higher end restaurant people know what to do."

"we arrived early on a lovely and quiet spring evening and ate their "charcutrie" plate out on the patio overlooking napa valley. loved the little bites of sausage, pate, potted pork and especially the smoked duck. moved inside for dinner and ordered their house char and cab and both were very good...long wait before food arrived...my ravioli was very light and delicious but more like dumplings and the creamed spinish side dish was fresh and enough for two servings. husband's swordfish was a little dry and tasted more like halibot but he liked it..small portion though for $30 and his pea soup with scallop was just that one scallop"

"I have been wanting to visit Greystone Restaurant at The Culinary Institute of America for as long as I can remember. I finally had my chance and was not disappointed. Everything was superb. The service was excellent. We were able to sit at the bar to enjoy a cocktail before our meal, where we enjoyed watching the chefs work their magic. Our meal was fantastic and we completely enjoyed our evening at Greystone. I'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Napa/St. Helena area."

"Went with my wife and two sons for Mother's Day. For this occasion they had a special menu ($40 per person) with basicly two options per course. With dinner had total of 4 beers and one glass of wine. Total bill: $240. Plus gave a $30 tip ... Total: $270. This is the lowest, percentage wise, tip I have given in a long, long time. Reason? We left the restaurant famished ... went home and had a barbecue about two hours later. Live in Napa and not going back."

"My sister has been many times. When she heard I was going to wine country for my honeymoon she immediately recommended this restaurant. We were excited to visit but left disappointed. We were sat in the corner where it was too dark and bugs were flying around. Our meal was not good! We ordered the appetizer sampler, chicken, steak, and panna cotta dessert. We liked the potato soup in the sampler but disliked all the other small apps. When I asked the waitress about the patte she misinformed me to later find out it was pork (which I don't eat). The fried chicken was bland and not satisfying while the steak was average. The dessert was overwhelming with too many flavors. It was topped with little candies which did not compliment the dessert."

"Impressive building, attentive service. The scallop and pea soup was good (one small scallop).
After that, disappointment. My overcooked trout's only flavor was in the "popped quinoa." My wife's short ribs, in ironic contrast, were undercooked--red. How do you undercook short ribs? The dessert souffle was a lump. The table and chairs were uncomfortable. My wife's feet did not reach the floor, and my knees were up against the table legs.
We are not complainers. We had good meals at Mustards Grill, Bottega and Bouchon in Napa Valley and at Kin, Willi's Seafood, and even Johnny Garlic's in Sonoma Valley. We expected more from the CIA. We did enjoy the Spice Islands Marketplace, and everyone was very friendly."

"We ate lunch outdoors on a beautiful day. The service was mixed. Water only filled once. Menu had enough variety to choose from. However the cheese plate appetizer came without any explanation of what cheese was what and where it was from. Needs some work there. Salad had too much dressing. Dessert soufflé was good. I don't need to go back to dine. But will return to the Illy dessert cafe next time for a sweet treat."

"I have been here many times before and have always enjoyed the experience. Something changed since I dined here last. The food was still good, however, the service was terrible! I expect better at an Applebee's or BJ's than the service we received here this time. We sat for quite a long while between courses when the entire place was serving only a pre-fixe menu. A party of six who were seated after our party of 3 were served and finished before we were within the same server's area. We had to request our bill at least 3 times. And to top it off, she tried to automatically add a 17% gratuity because she knew her service was bad! I won't be back for a long while after that!"

"Greystone on the whole is fabulous. But the menu changes and old favorites are often gone the next time you dine.
Our experience this time was great except for the dessert.
We ordered the sampler which included 4 tastes from the menu.
Except for the ice cream they were awful.
We visited the culinary center the next day and saw amazing
Desserts there. Not sure why these were not served in the
Restaurant.

"We visited the culinary institute on a Sunday. Unfortunately, our lunch reservation was right when a demonstration at the Spice Islands Market was about to begin ! Our lunch was a wonderful Price Fix menu with crab cake appetizer, soup ( chilled pea) or salad, Chicken Skirt Steak or Trout, and a deconstructed Blueberry Cheesecake or Strawberry Salad. The dining room is part of the mansion, with stone walls and wrought iron window bars.
The food was excellent, but there was a lag between courses. It was almost an hour and a half experience. I would recommend that anyone visiting St Helena drop in for a visit. Unfortunately, the Illy cafe Bakery is undergoing remodeling for the busy season. It will be welcome, the center was not very busy ."

"I have been a frequent visitor to the restaurant for years visiting at least once a month. They recemtly made a change in menu style and management / chef personnel. The resulting menu change is disappointing . The menu lacks the creativity and excitement that the previous menu had. The menu now is a generic, medeocre version of every other California cuisine clone in the market place. Boring."

"The new menu is a mistake. The small bites that we always loved to sample are gone. Fewer menu choices now, but the prices seem much higher. My pork main dish was dried out due to over-cooking, and my green salad (wonderfully full of delicate greens) was overwhelmed by a much-too-strong dressing. We'll go back to shop in the store, but the restaurant is off the menu for now. There are too many other better dining options in the Napa Valley for the same cost."

"We "got" the CIA teaching experience. The food was creative, but not quite on par with some of the finer restaurants. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and food prep. The bus people and food expediters were all over the place and very efficient. There was very little "personality" or "warmth" from the people working there. No real greeting at the door, etc. The staff seemed intent on providing good service, but did not interact with the clientele very much. Overall a "good" experience, but not a "great" one."

"We were seated, then ignored - no water, no nothin. The air conditioning wasn't working and it was at least 90 degrees outside. With the kitchen heat, we were sweating and still no water. The food was good, but service was just lousy. We gave up on dessert, because the waitress wouldn't bring the dessert menu and the overwhelming heat. Would not recommend and with all the fine restraurants in the Napa Valley we will not return."

"We were pretty disappointed with our whole experience. The food was good but very small portions. We ordered a cheesecake to split for dessert but were served a squiggle of cream cheese on a plate with a minimal amount of graham cracker crumbs sprinkle in two spots. We were automatically charged a 17% gratuity for just two people. Then there were two drinks on our tab that we did not order. The waiter said he was told to add these charges on by some mysterious person. There was no bar service and no one else around that could have ordered these drinks so not convinced this was an accident. We will not be back and we are locals."

"what a let down! waited 20 minutes after being seated to be acknowledged by wait staff. Getting drinks took just as long. The menu looked very good, until you actually eat the food. It was bland to taste. A nice gesture was a birthday plate of cookies were brought over. Appearance was beautiful, the taste terrible. The cookies like a linder cookie tasted like they used fake butter and not enough sugar in the shortbread. We were SO disappointed with so many great resturants in Napa, we spent 1 of our dining experiences here."

"We had our eye on this restaurant for a while. Last weekend we had a friend visiting from Europe and took him on a wine tour. We wanted to end the day in a nice restaurant and impress him. Unfortunately we got impressed - with how many things can be done wrong!
The service was horrible - examples ranging from forgetting and delaying orders, not knowing what's on the menu and what's currently available to messing up the bill.
The food was also so-so, especially deserts. The rest of the dishes were average - nothing that stands out.
We've been to such school restaurant in Vancouver - food and service were spectacular! Just an example of what standards a school should set up!

"This was our second time at the Culinary Institute. The last time was 5 years ago and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This time, however, the A/C was not working so it was stiflingly hot, the menu was uninspired, and the food was just mediocre. The server seemed less than interested in what she was doing or what our needs might be. She even served us our martinis in desert glasses instead of a martini glass! Weird for a place that that is supposed to be a learning center for culinary excellence. Very poor example!"

"I had dined at CIA previously and was very disappointed with the service. Waiter was unattentive, difficult to understand and it was just a poor overall experience. In addition, we were highly disappointed that the prefixe menu was not available. We went to specifically enjoy that and the wine pairings. Not available nor was that communicated in advance. Wine list overall was poor - particularly considering the location.
A big turn off overall and we will not visit again."

"The food at the Greystone is always a winner. As the menu changes regularly, only the freshest ingredients are used. The service was spotty during my last visit, but the food was the clear winner of the evening! It was another great visit of great food. The wine list is impressive, given Wine Spectators credentials. For a great meal, stop by when you're in Napa Valley."

"I was not happy with the first glass of wine I ordered, so I requested a different wine. The waitress was happy to replace my wine, no questions asked. Then the manager came over and apologized for the fact that I did not like the first wine. I had been worried about how they would handle it, but it couldn't have been handled better!"

"The building and restaurant are lovely but as for the food totally different story. Feel that they are trying too hard to create unusual appetIzers/ entrees. Too many ingredients that really don't work together. As part of the students training they work as the waiter/waitresses - I think some of them need a lesson on how to do this. The waitress took away our plates when we weren't finished with the appetizer!"

"Everything would have been perfect if the waiter did not forget our order of Oysters. We ordered the chicken for our 14-yr. old and it was rubbery. I was very diasappointed in the service as I enteratined a family of 5, all international guests from. There was an evident sight of very few waiters to tend to all the tables so that a lot of people were waiting to be tended to. The scenerey will always be awesome and the weather just made it beautiful. I wished the service and food matched all these, specially after paying almost $300."

Consensus from my friends around the table : 7 - which is not good for something
called "Culinary-Institute-of-America" !
Saw a lot better in the past.
Overall - not a bad experience but don't expect too much.
Service was excellent.

"The format asking one person to rate the dining experience when multiple people were served is not functional. For instance, the "Noise" rating section in "Rate Your Experience" leaves out the choice of "LOUD, or "Unpleasant level" in it's criteria. "Moderate" and especially "energetic" are meaningless standards which indicate nothing on a decibel noise level. I can only conclude it was done on purpose so as to confuse the reviewer and provide pointless real experience data. Regarding section "Select Special Features"..."Fit For Foodies" is a curious category. "Foodie" is another example of a cliche' term thrown around in a pointless manner (OUT OF SPACE!!!)"

"The decor is warm and inviting. We sat inside so that we could watch the cooks, but they were all on the other side of the kitchen so we didn't get a very good view. We had the chicken confi, and the vegetable risotto, both very good. The risotto was a little bit mushy, but still had a nice taste. The acorn squash with ricotta was our favorite! Pretty to look at, and tasted good.
Our server was very awkward - seemed very nervous. She stood in the corner and kept an eye on us while we were eating, which made us feel funny. She did keep our water glasses full, and the food arrived quickly. The white napkin left lint all over my dark slacks, which stayed with me for the rest of the day.
All in all, it was a very nice lunch."

"Food was deliciously unique and wine pairing was perfect. Service was outstanding. I commend you on your training. The staff is wonderfully responsive and accommodating. "I've dined at the Hyde Park CIA which was a wonderful experience. Dining at Greystone was just as wonderful, perhaps even better since we were seated at the the table where we could observe the chefs-in-training! Fabulous food; fabulous experience. It was really a treat for all four of us; one lactose intolerant and another who is gluten intolerant!"

"Interesting to see how future chefs are trained in their two-year course there, Some of the cooking and preparation is done in the round right in the dining room.
My pork ragout had several problems - shoulder was tasty but fatty within ; loin was tough; and sausage not to my taste,
Plus they wanted me to tip at 17% on the total bill which I refused to do, so they said I could tip what I wanted.

"We were a bit underwhelmed by this, unfortunately. It is certainly a lovely environment, and the service was fine, but there really wasn't any particular thing that stood out as extraordinary. We did appreciate other diners didn't seem to mind our young children, and the bartender was kind enough to make an extra trip from behind the bar to bring our daughter a cherry for her Shirley Temple. We visited for dinner, and I think I'd like to try again for brunch or lunch."

"Food was excellent. Presentation was outstanding from the soup to the dessert. Servers were very enthusiastic and answered our questions about the menu completely and to our satisfaction. It was noisy not energetic, but with such a large room and so many people, I suppose that is to be expected. When I am in the area again I will make reservations for the CIA."

"Truly an amazing place. Five star service and dining without the price. Our service was excellent - some of the best I ever had. They know how to make you feel like you are their only customer. The food was excellent and the serving portions just right. We enjoyed talking with the students who served us and hearing their experiences as students (we asked them to share). Overall it is one of the best dining experiences I've had. I highly recommend going here. While I said the noise level was energetic - it was not loud. We could carry on a conversation with ease. The ambiance is very welcoming and warm. Definitely a must go and experience place."
