"Best chicken and waffles in Nashville on the brunch menu. Delicious, fresh waffle, tasty crispy chicken, hint of rosemary was an unexpected excellent compliment. Steak and biscuit bendict was charming and delicious. My new favorite brunch place - even better than Marche because you can reserve a table in advance and avoid the horrid wait for brunch at Marche and other places."

"The restaurant was a disappointment. We heard nothing but great reviews leading up to the visit however the horrible service cast a downer on the whole experience. The waiter was clearly inexperienced, unattentive, and overwhelmed by the 8 & 6 tops in our section. The filet was tender yet unremarkable flavored. The shrimp and grits we're impossible to eat without getting the sauce all over our hands and clothes. The best part of the meal was the oysters. Finally, the bill came and I was stunned. Bad service, mediocre food AND overpriced. Won't make this mistake again."

"Went in for late brunch on Saturday. It was quite busy but because we had our Open Table reservation we were seated immediately. Our server was friendly, informed and attentive. One of our party is gluten and dairy free. She had several options on the brunch menu which was a relief. I have never been disappointed at The Southern. I recommend it to all my friends and out of town guests."

"The Southern has been a favorite of mine for a while. This visit I tried a cup of the corn chowder and it was AMAZING. I have never had a waiter or waitress to steer me wrong. They are great at describing flavors. I also set a reservation via Open Table and was seated immediately. The hostess brigade is always so nice and welcoming. Not stuffy at all."

"The southern is a cool, hip bar/restaurant. The cocktails are pretty good, but every time I eat dinner there, it's just ok. The first time I got the filet & it tasted too smokey..I started with a ceasar salad & that was tasty (but how can you mess up a ceasar?).the most recent visit I ordered the fried chicken, now I'm from tennessee so I know how fried chicken should be done..I was expecting fried bons in chicken. Their friend chicken was simply a 'chicken fried chicken' with gravy on it..way too much breading. It was ok, but not aamazing. Also, had a fried shrimp app (nothing healthy there) & it tasted burnt. So, for drink yes! For food...probably stick with my fave J Alexanders. :)"

"If you want some GREAT food you must try The Southern. Forget what you think you know about Southern cooking....they gourmet it up a few notches with some unique twists in the preparation and presentation. The atmosphere is vibrant and open, and once we were seated, our server was at the table in a heartbeat to ask us what we'd like to drink. I've already told several people about my lunch experience and suggested they run, not walk, on over for an absolutely delicious taste sensation! Cannot wait to bring my husband back for dinner!"

"Really liked the place. Our waiter was very attentive and courteous. I liked the food and the portions. Love the building/space. The only criticism I have is that the gumbo was sort of misrepresented on the menu. It was NOT maghogany colored nor was it (IMHO) very authentic. Gumbo this far North seldom is. I liked the sort of fried, breaded okra on the top although I've never seen this on a bowl of gumbo before. There was sort of too much gratuitous okra in it and it was WAY too red and tomato-y...not mahogany colored at all BUT, it was very tasty just not very authentic imho. I did enjoy my visit to the Southern and will recommend it to others. Thanks. WW"

"Took some out of town friends there for brunch and we all raved about our meal choices. The shrimp and grits is amazing, and the steak and eggs Benedict was wonderful. However, the winner of the meal (unanimous vote by the table) was the chicken and waffle...we got the hot chicken version. Oh my goodness...the spicy chicken with the sweetness of the maple syrup was to die for. Can't wait to go back!!"

"First was dinner and then now a few months later Sunday brunch. Somehow everything looks amazing on the menu but fails to deliver in taste. The food at the Southern is just OK. Their burger is great, but who can't get a burger right? Salad was good, not $18 dollars good for roasted beats, hearts of palm and hearts of romaine with shrimp. One expensive salad. The fried egg sandwich was so so. The Cuban is another let down...very bland (head to Fido if you want a similar 'Cuban' style skillet that is half the price and 2x as good). I want to like the Southern, but for the prices the food just does not deliver. For brunch, Marche in East Nashville is leagues ahead. For dinner, Silo or Rolf and Daughters in Germantown are setting the bar."

"My wife and I went to The Southern on our recent Anniversary trip to Nashville. I found it highly ranked in TripAdvisor and it was close to our hotel for a night that we needed to move quickly between plans. I set up the reservation online seamlessly and we were quickly sat at our table after showing up early. The food was OUTSTANDING with probably the best Double-cut Smoked Porkchop I've ever had. Even though the entree was a very large serving, the sides that came with it were more in-line with an appetite that allowed the plate to be cleaned. The food itself was well priced and like most restaurants, it was the drink tab that got ya. We had two drinks (one non-alcoholic) and they equaled 28% of our bill."

"The food and service were good. I would highly recommend the fish and sweet potatoe grits entree. My husband got the filet ..good but we have had better. The oysters for the price I would not recommend. For 2 it was $9 and you would barely see them in the shell. Good flavor but I've defintely had better for 1/2 the price. It was my first time and it was very busy but had made a reservation and got seated on time. Would go back but may try a few more new restaurants before returning."

"Although the service and atmosphere was great, the food was horrible. We started with the Benne Shrimp, absolutely no flavor. "Collard greens overpower the baked oysters, paid $38 for the chippino seafood stew to get one overcooked tough shrimp, 2 scallops, 4 mussels and a 4 bites of fish. Service was ok but not great. This is a restaurant trying to be good but too busy to do a good job. Getting and email AND a call on my cell phone to remind me of the reservation was annoying. Too noisy for a good conversation at dinner."

"Though the waitress appeared friendly and willing to help she unfortunately did not seem willing to take up our request for a bottle of wine. She instead brought two glasses then claimed she had not heard us correctly. When I requested the bottle she said she would bring it when we finished our glasses. I had to remind her at which point she said we had ordered by the glass. All would have been fine had she not tried to overcharge us at billing by 40 dollars, not the fact that she spoke with a smile through gritted teeth. And I'm normally easily pleased!!"

"We came here before going to the Symphony. The restaurant is right across the street, so it was very convenient. Highly recommend reservations because it was not overly crowded at 5:45, but was completely full by 7:00. We tried the oysters -- I am not usually a fan, but these were very good. My husband had the Belle -- filet mignon with mushrooms. The steak was so tender and delicious. I had the Nudie Suit, which was prime rib. It was also excellent. We finished the meal by sharing the Chocolate Whiskey Cake. I didn't think I could eat more than a bite, but it was so good that I had a hard time stopping myself. The wait staff was also very attentive and personable. Will definitely go back!"

"I took a friend for a small celebratory lunch/brunch on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere is friendly, vibrant and the food selection is not overwhelming. There are choices, but not so many that it takes an hour to get through the menu. I certainly wished I was an oyster enthusiast, because there were many choices, but cocktails/beer and brunch was good enough. I had the Cuban, which was decent, and my friend had the Southern Cheeseburger, which she kept raving about how good it was. We also had the Strawberry shortcake (great) and the chocolate decadent cake (AMAZING). I will definitely come back, especially when I have friends in town and want a place downtown (SoBro) to catch up, have good food/drinks."

Mary's and the steak & eggs Benedict was outstanding ! Tried the Kumamoto oysters and now I am addicted to them ! No regular oysters on the half shell will ever measure up after those ! I will be a brunch regular from now on ! The only thing I wasn't crazy a out was the band they had playing right at the front door. Sitting at a table near them made it pretty hard to carry on a conversation. Luckily they took a long break about 10 minutes after we were seated and didn't start back up until right before we left. Next time I hope to sit on the patio & enjoy the view of Nashville."
