Claudine provides casual, warm service with the educated flair of San Francisco. The wine list features an eclectic collection of French Old World and California New World selections from Wine Director Sarah Knoefler.
"food was very good, service was also very good, and the one complaint that we have is that if you ask for bread , you are charged one dollar. It seems that if you spend one hundred dollars for two people for dinner, charging a dollar for bread is a mistake"

"Cracking design, great service, perfect food. Enough choices on the menu and wine list, but not too many. And in response to another reviewer: with all due respect, it is very, very French."

"Claudine has pretty cool bar sitting, with about 8 spots. The tables are a tad close to each other, but we were there late and it wasn't very crowded. The pate platter was awesome!"

"We had a glass of wine at the bar while waiting for our table, took a look at the menu, finished our wine and politely made an excuse to leave. Their limited menu showed little resemblance to the online version and there was nothing interesting at all to select from. They didn't even offer French onion soup! Walked one block down Bush to Le Central and had a wonderful French dinner. But the servers were very nice at least."

"Dining at Claudine is like taking a little trip to France. It's a cozy bistro-style atmosphere with a small staff and open kitchen. The service is casual but professional. Our favorite dishes were the cauliflower cream soup, the white beans and the skirt steak salad. The carafes of wine make it easy to try something new without a risk."

"The wait staff were very considerate. We were late for our reservation but they held our table and were very pleasant. We ordered the pate plate which was o.k. except we had to ask for some more bread as there were only four pieces provided which was not enough for the amount of pate served. The meals provided were tasty. We ordered the braised pork shanks with creamed barley and kale. The meat was very tender and the sauce was robust but the only kale provided were little specks mixed in with the barley. We would have preferred a real helping of vegetables. I think the restaurant generally has good ambience but we were placed at a table right next to the semi open kitchen which was super noisy. I would ask for a different table."

"This is the second time I've eaten lunch at Claudine, & found a new menu. The service was delightful, & the eggplant sandwich, & Brussel sprout side dish were both very good. I would return. I've also had a delicious dinner there."

"We enjoyed our meal. It was well prepared but not unlike items offered at a lot of SF restaurants. Service was good. Also, the space as very pleasant and well-designed. It's a small space but the noise level was very low since the bar is at the front of the restaurant and the kitchen is behind a glass wall."

"This was a "top 100" restaurant for SF, but I walked away regretting my choice. We started with Assiette De Charcuterie paired with the 2009 Chateau Ducasse. Nice. The Choux De Bruxelles (roasted brussels sprouts)were very dry and sour with little heat from the chili flakes. Even though I shared the small plate with a fellow diner, more than 1/2 of the plate went untouched. The waitress said the Soupe Aux Boulettes (pork & ricotta meatball soup) was a signature dish. The broth was rich and complex, but I found the meatball texture and flavor unappetizing. I left 1/2 the soup. The creme Brulee and Mousee Au Chocolate was unexceptional. Not a top 100."

"Overall the food was fine. What made the evening unpleasant was the noise level inside the restaurant. It was off-the-charts loud. The accustics are terrible. I had to lean across the table cupping my ears to hear my dinner guest speak."

"Small and sophisticated, with circular bar and servers who are attentive but don't rush you along. Interesting selection of light, fresh-tasting French specialties, including delicious pates made on-site. Excellent options for drinks and desserts."

"Two trips to San Francisco and two trips to Claudine’s. First time was based on location and first impressions from the sidewalk as I walked by the restaurant. The second trip was a preplanned reservation for Valentine’s Day. Both experiences were positive. The dining room is small and cozy. The food is well prepared with good presentation. I had the steamed mussels. The mussels were very fresh and the broth was well seasoned, I wanted to lick the bowl. My wife had the roasted chicken. The chicken and vegetables were cooked perfectly and served with a well-balanced sauce. The only advice I have for first time diners is to watch the wine-list it has a price per-glass, carafe (a little more than ½ a bottle), and whole bottle."

"The food was very good and we were initially served very quickly. After that the service was absolutely terrible. I saw our first server leave and no one took over. They never came to take our plates away and never asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. We just went in and paid our bill and left. Even when they realized their mistake there were no apologies."

"Good restaurant, although it made me nervous the fast way they were pushing dishes on our table, without waiting for the previous one to be finished. I like to enjoy the dinner, talk with my friends and not being in a rush to eat and leave."

"I went with a group of three other people. There was a short wait to be seated so they accommodated us at the bar. It is a small intimate dining area, inside. Very few tables so the short wait was not surprising. The service was fantastic. Very friendly and helpful. The menu is short but the appetizers and the entrees were very good. The chicken breast was especially good."

"Small menu but what we had was delicious (except the sauteed Brussel Sprouts which were tough). Noise level got a little high when it filled up. NOT a good place for groups as it's small...we saw only one table for four although the tables for two could be moved together I suppose. Very convenient for the Union Square scene...."

"We selected Claudine as a pre-theatre spot to eat a fine meal, yet to be able to get to the play on time. . we were so impressed by the quality of the food, the service was absolutely marvelous: Our waiter, Paula, was both, most competent as well as one of the most charming we had ever had the pleasure of serving us, and the place seemed so unassuming and non-presumptious. we shall certainly return"

"This was disappointing for a Bay Area Top 100 restaurant. It should have been a sign of what to come when I saw the abysmal wine list -- no french wines in a french bistro? The waiter recommended a wine I wasn't familiar with. He returned to the table shortly to say they were running out of that wine and had to open a new keg (?). I waited and waited. Someone else finally asked if we had ordered. I explained that I was waiting for a glass of wine. I well run restaurant would have known which wine choices were getting low, and definitely offered something else while I waited. I was hoping delicious french bistro food would offset the wine experience, but the food was nothing special. I won't return."

"Food was just OK - the macaroni and cheese was boring. A waiter spilled a plate of food after bumping into another waiter and was more worried about that then splashing food all over us. Certainly not a top restaurant at all."

"Made a reservation for my friend and I to celebrate both of our birthdays. Made a note in my res. saying "birthday lunch", so was surprised when I arrived to find we had the worst table in the house! Mentioned it to the waiter and he seemed surprised, as if he'd never read the note. Fortunately we were able to move to a better table. The house salad was particularly good - dressed perfectly and had a great balance of flavors. The pate was good, but a little tough, and the accompanying bread was unevenly toasted. My friend had the same salad and a side of artichokes which were so oily and limp she couldn't eat them. The chocolate mousse dessert was good although the glass Pyrex bowl it was served in was not very appealing."
