"This was our first time at Epic. Our server Dan was very attentive and the chef checked in on our meal too. The oyster appetizer was delicious - very plump and juicy. Baby back robs were very good - we asked for more of the tangy sauce for dipping. Unfortunately, the pork loin was dry so that was disappointing. Dan recommended the funnel cake and he was right - a tower of delicious fried dough with blueberry compote and creamy thick whipped cream. The meal was a bit pricey for what we got but we will return."

"This was our first time here and the hardest part was trying to decide what to order as everything looked so good! Our server did an excellent job at describing the different items we were interested in and gave great suggestions. By far the best was the shaved prime rib sandwich on an onion roll. The panchetta macaroni & cheese was a side dish to die for, it was cheesy and delicous and a small fork fight erupted over the last bite. It was worth it!"

"This was our third visit and a bit disappointed. Our first two experiences were quite memorable. Perhaps this was just an off night: The Apple Wood Smoked scallops were salty but the pickled cabbage was spot on; the Caesar Salad Smoked Ancho was quite good; the Kahlua Pig Roll met expectations; the Apple Wood Smoked ribs entrée, while an incredibly generous portion, were not as tender as they could/should have been and lacked a bit of zest; and the filet mignon was just ok, nothing special, and the accompanying fried asparagus were cold and bland and the Cajun crawfish hollandaise sauce was too consuming on the plate. The chocolate-layered 'candied-bacon cake' was excellent; kudos. The third time not the charm...but will try again."

".A perfect night for chili the other day, and Epic Smokehouse did not disappoint. Their chili totally hits on all notes -- a little smoky, nice amount of meat and good balance of beans. Then I got prime rib -- all out at 20oz, and it was great. A nice smoked quality penetrated throughout the rich cut, and has a nice accompaniment of mashed potatoes. But the best thing is the funnel cake. Don't miss it. It's the thing of youth that Epic has helped surpass even the most romantic childhood memories. Served piled high on a plate with mixed berries and a dollop of house-made whipped cream, I think it's a must have -- even if you don't want dessert."

"A friend of mine came here just after it opened and said the BBQ reminded her of home (North Carolina) which says a lot ... The menu is kinda pricy so we've been waiting to try it for a more special occasion. I would say maybe I was dissappointed because my expectations were built up by my friend but it was honestly terrible. We were seated in the bar area at a table about 6 inches away from the next people. The drinks were over priced for what it was, And the food was terrible!!!! My boyfriend got the ribs and they were soooooo dry he didn't even eat half of them... And my pulled pork was one of the worst BBQ I've ever had.the worst part is our bills was like $90 for two people and both of us barely ate anything. I will NOT be going back."

"I first went to Epic during restaurant week, and had a great experience. The food was great (I had the brisket and mac and cheese, which were excellent.. ) This time I had the pork and was VERY disappointed. I should have sent it back. It tasted like it had been rolled in old, used coffee grounds. The sauce and pork itself seemed to have little flavor because the texture and flavor of the kona "crust" were so overwhelmimg. The polenta was disappointing also. Not well seasoned and flat. I am a little embarrassed because I had family with me and one of them also had the pork. If I had had that the first time, I would not have come back."

"Had 6:30 reservation - seated right away and were immediately served water and ordered a beverage. Spouse does not drink alcohol and appreciates quick service of a meal. Salads were generous and tasty. Spouse ordered smoked brisket and reported it to be very good. I ordered rib eye rare which it was. Quality of meat could have been better but was acceptable. Side of sprouts with bacon was a disappointment. Over all service is very attentive - some of the best in the area."

"Return trip lunch for 5. Ribs were excellent. Cho’gall sandwich, which lets you sample both beef and pork from the smoker, is a favorite. Get the Bacon Sprouts instead of the fries. Tangy BBQ sauce complements all the meats. Look for drink specials - specialty beers by the bottle are pricey."

"We chose Epic because it was close to our hotel (Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City) and because the menu sounded interesting. We hadn't read any previous reviews nor heard any word of mouth about them. We had a 7pm reservation, began running late and called to change our time to 8pm. The man who answered was very accommodating and told us that would be no problem. We then arrived at 7:30pm and were still seated immediately. The server was very energetic and friendly. Our party (4 of us) decided to each try something different and were all very happy with each choice. Everything from the Bacon App to the Beef Brisket to the Chocolate Cake with bacon dessert was fantastic. I would recommend Epic for anyone who wants a great meal at a great price."

"I've been a BBQ conneuisseur for a while now, so perhaps my review should be considered in that light. The portions were well-sized, and the meat was cooked perfectly. However, both the ribs and brisket were under seasoned and needed lots of BBQ sauce to add flavor. That was disappointing.
The ambiance was ok, th two-person table have you seated a long ways from your dinner companion which makes all of the conversation quite loud. The servers were a bit intrusive, but not too bad. The in-house lemonade was delicious!"

"Had a good first experience at Epic on a Saturday night. Pro's: friendly, welcoming staff. Good wine list, both by the glass and by bottle. Good mix of entree options, at a competitive price for the DC area. ($18 for shrimp dish, $19 for salmon, $25 for steak.)
Con's: limited appetizer selection with small portions, expensive cocktail list (although some of the options looked amazing.)
For food: scallop appetizer was spicy but tasty. Only two scallops per dish, so you have to order two $10 dishes to serve a group of four. For dinner, the brisket was the hands down winner. I don't remember what the sauce was, but it had amazing flavor. Also the mac and cheese side was delicious. Also good: roasted chicken, ribeye. Short ribs were just"

"We booked this restaurant for a birthday dinner and the website was really cool and made the restaurant seem very appealing. It's a pretty cool space but the food was pretty weak.
The service was slow (though the waiter was really nice) even though the restaurant wasn't crowded.
Our appetizers and salads were good but the main courses were not good at all. We did enjoy dessert though.
If only the food was on par with the website...."

"Disappointing wine list. Server didn't have full knowledge of the menu. Large salad wasn't really that big. Brisket and Mac and cheese was ok, but the fat hadn't full rendered nd the meat was still chewey, suggesting it wasn't smoked long enough. Overall it was an ok night, but not worth the price. The place seems to aspire to a higher level than it provides."

"Sunday nite: Go for what they do best--BBQ-style and slow cooked meats. Stay away from the other items like shrimp and polenta or rice dishes. Icky. The Smoked Ancho Caesar Salad and scallop appetizer were both quite good, but the rest of our meal was either too salty or just okay. The mac and cheese with pancetta was excellent, but it's hard to mess up pasta, cheese, and pork. Again, play to their strengths and go with meats like roast and sandwiches. Go for fancy or upscale and you'll be sad. Plus, even with 2 sweater layers, a scarf, and a lined leather jacket, the place was chilly. Even my husband kept his jacket on. If it is cold outside, dress appropriately. Service (bar) was okay. Good bevs. Too blah for a repeat visit, sorry."

"Great new restaurant with sophisticated yet very comfortable ambiance, friendly excellent yet not Intursive service and a delicious menu of BBQ ffavorites as well as new takes with unexpected twists. beer belly chicken was moist and delicious, incapable of being left unfinished on the plate. he chef's moms recipe for bread pudding was like nothing our table had ever had before, not a messy plate of custard drowned gloppy bread bt distinct chunks of bread infused with flavor, still crisp and delicious."

"The Epic Smokehouse was a restaurant that my husband and I were looking forward to going to on Valentines Day. The staff was friendly enough, greeting me with a rose, and the waiter was attentive. "We went during Restaurant Week & ffound the menu to be quite delicious. I had the filet & it was tender. My friend had the brisket & that was tender too. The Kahlua pig rolls were delicious but contained some gristle. Bread pudding was dessert & that was over the top good! The drinks were very good (we ordered off the specialty drink menu). My biggest downside is that as others came to dine, they seted everyone right next to us when they could have left a table in between us. We were the first seted in our section & another couple came & were parked within inches of us for at least 20 minutes when there were at least 10 other 2-tops within feet of our table. When the 3rd table arrived, they were seated on the other side."

"Epic is a great all around experience. To start the happy hour is great with a good array of specials on food and drinks. The happy hour ambiance is lively and can get crowded quickly but the attention from the bar staff never falters. Even when crowded the management is quiclk to extend the happy hour menu, deals and experience into the dinning area.
The food is fresh and made with alot of attention. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and wine and the management is always around to ensure that your experience is everything you expected. Great twist in BBQ, steak house favorites and deserts. Great experience and even better food"

"This was the first time we'd been here and it was great! We came for restaurant week, but the menu wasn't really a deal, since most of their food is priced pretty reasonably already. The mac&cheese is served in a single-serving cast iron skillet and is to die for! I would come back just for that. The meat is good, very flavorful & HUGE portions (plenty to take home for tomorrow's lunch). You cannot leave without getting the bacon cupcake for dessert. Just try it - it's amazing."

"Smoked meats sounded right up my alley, but the food fell short. The rasher of bacon wasnt nice and thick like Peter' Lugers for example, and it had way too much mustard on it. A smoke joint should let me taste the smoke - not just a mouthful of mustard. The brisket was so mushy it seemed as if it had been boiled, not smoked, and it was very wet. The bacon chocolate cupcake was not as expected - it was just a plain old chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing like you would get in a supermarket. A strip of bacon was cut into a 2 inch strip and stuck into the icing - weak."

"Great smoked pork and beef, whether piled into impressive sandwiches or plated as a sampler platter. The Epic Burger is among DC's best. The sampler included excellent pork ribs and so-so chicken. The person who ordered the Pork Tacos had finished them before anyone else could get a bite! As for sides, the Pancetta Mac & Cheese was a hit. The Bacon Sprouts could have used more bacon, but we all loved the pairing of raisins with the Brussels Sprouts. The Bread pudding was great; the chocolate waffle would have been better if it was warm. Warning - the prices on some imported beers are outrageous. Epic is not easy to spot, and street parking is probably easier to find at dinner time than during a weekday. But it's worth looking for."

"If you like smoked foods, you will enjoy Epic. Make sure someone gets the Brisket - its the winner. I enjoyed my ribs but could have split the entree -- it's a full rack of ribs.
The Bacon App and the Pig Rolls are delicious. My only complaint is the lack of compelling veggie side dishes. The Cole Slaw is interesting but a little too vinegary for my taste. I love Brussels with Bacon, but I prefer the way I make them which is to cook the bacon, and then cook the brussels in the bacon fat (at Epic they are buttered with a few bacon chips on the dish). I also would have expected collard greens or some kind of bean dish.
I will try it again and hope to find more side dishes to enhance the meaty menu options."
