The restaurant scene in Portland is among the most vibrant and interesting in the country. 23Hoyt steps up to the plate with (former college softball player) Chef Amber Webster. Amber moved from San Diego in late 2010 with the recommendation of her mentor and former boss, chef Jason Neroni. Amber brings a gutsy, farm-to-table sensibility to the 23Hoyt menu and a light hand with hearty and satisfying dishes such as Pork Cassoulet and handmade pasta dishes. The crave-able menu (with the best burger in town) still fits within the realm of "gastro-pub" with familiar offerings that exceed expectations on your first bite.
The comfortable cafe, bar and dining room features several seating areas including extensive outdoor cafe tables on bustling NW 23rd Avenue, in Nob Hill, the best boutique shopping neighborhood in the city.

"It was Mother's Day... But our food took FOREVER to arrive so I wouldn't recommend 23 Hoyt during a busy time. I also ordered the Hoyt burger medium & it was so rare the center could have walked off my plate. However since it was so slow I just picked it apart rather than send it back."

"Was looking through Open Table for a restaurant selection in Portland and happened upon 23 Hoyt. I get to Portland a few times a year and enjoy the Pearl District and its many great places to eat and drink. I wanted something that got me to a different area of the Pearl than where our regular business dinners end up so this looked like it fit the bill.
Food was excellent; the pork chop and leg of lamb entress were our choice and both done perfectly and we enjoyed a very good beet salad starter. The caramel ice cream with sea salt was a great finish."

"his is my second time at this restaurant. This time the service was very slow on this Sunday night. I don't know if it was the number of staff on hand or the particular server. At first the place was busy, but by the time we left it was quite slow. Just getting the bill and paying was a 24 minute experience."

"We had great appetizers, wine list was good and then dinner (halibut cheeks) was wonderful. A solid night out. Service level wasn't johnny-on-the-spot or over the top, but fine. Chef sent out a cauliflower soup for tasting which was a nice touch. We would go here again."

"This is a very hip restaurant with a great location. Downside was that our server was very busy and seemed to have too many tables. With that said, she was very attentive when she was at our table and extremely nice, As were all the rest of the staff. Our appetizers came before our first drink, however the steamed clams and caesar salad were both good. My partner did not like his entree...The Lamb. I ordered and loved the flatbread, and the fried cauliflower side. Yum! The wine list was very well done.
While it wasn't the best food or the best dining experience ever, I would try it out again and recommend it to a friend."

"Horribly understaffed for Easter Brunch. Had to wait over an hou from ordering food for it to arrive, food had been prepared hours in advance and was not fit for serving. Ordered a Mimosa 4 different times prior to delivery, I don't think the restaurant will have the staying power in this expensive locale if this is the norm, and we had reservations..."

"This was our second time to dine at 23 Hoyt. We are so glad that we gave it a second chance. The service was outstanding this time and the food was as good as it was the first time that we dined there. Fantastic all around. We can't wait to go back.
My wife had the burger with bleu cheese and a duck egg on it and it was fantastic. I was almost sorry that I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken, which was delicious as well."

"There on a slow Sunday night but had to keep flagging down our server since she was nowhere to be seen. Our guests only got their second glass of wine after finished with their entree and that was after we went to enormous effort to get her attn. (and going to the bar since we noticed the wine just sitting there for awhile). Interestingly this OK service at the beginning and disappearing/unfriendly act at the end also happens to us at Blue Hour (same owners). Despite that, all very happy with the food. Just beware of the window seat where you're leaning against a pipe that jabs into your back (had to wrap it with jackets and scarves). We're going back to sitting at the bar if there's a next time."

"We were wanting to have a nice relaxing dinner and were feeling as though they were rushing us in bringing each course of the meal just minutes after we just got something, so it was a bit irritating having to switch to the main course while I was warm and then back. "5 min after the drinks had arrived, the Hostess came over to our table and told us that OpenTable had overbooked our specific table we were at and they needed the table to set up a 4 top. She said they would comp our drinks for us being willing to move tables. In that moment it was very awkward because she is putting her mistake on us to fix. Do we stay or do we go? Are the people at the front door the ones that are waiting on this table? She also mentions it was ok if we didn’t want to move but if that were true she wouldn’t have asked us in the first place. We agreed to move and as we were walking to the new table she mention that we were going to a better table which it wasn’t. We asked for the next table over and she agreed."

"We went for Valentine's Day and there was a prix fixe menu for $50. The food was great, but I can't see paying $50 for the 3 options if I had gone on a regular night. Wine was not part of the prix fixe so you had to pay more for the drinks. The only added touch for Valentines Day were rose petals on the table. Other than that, the service was horrible adn we weren't offered any coffee with our dessert. It felt like you were on a timetable to finish dinner so they could get the next customer in there. So instead of feeling extra special on Valentine's Day, it felt like we were more of a hassle."

"The four of us had a wonderful evening at 23 Hoyt last Saturday night. Risotto, Fried Chicken and Lamb Ragu were perfect choices as was the donuts with caramel dipping sauce at the end. "I thought the food was very good, as was the presentation of the food. I felt that the portion of salmon that I got was on the small side for the price, but it was cooked exactly how I wanted it and tasted great! The duck that my wife ordered was excellent as well.
Our service was less than stellar. Our server was quite disengaged from us as customers and seemed to have many other better things to do. While other tables would get water refills and inquiries about anything being needed, we remained unlooked at.
I will return, but ask to have a different server."

"Food was good and nice atmospher but the server was terrible and did not check on us at all. Went 20 Minutes after ordering a bottle of wine before I could flag him down and he told me he forgot that they were out of the bottle I ordered and did not even take the time to make a suuggestion. No suggestions or reccomendations about the menu, and everything was very slow. All of it could be addresed by a more attentive and engaged server as the food, location and atmosphere were very nice."

"This was my fourth or fifth visit to 23 Hoyt and in the past the service has been ok, the food has been great and the ambiance nice. This visit was different. The service was slow even though the restaurant was not overly busy at 8:00 on a Saturday night.. The waitress never introduced herself, we had to track her down to order appetizers, and she inexplicably disappeared and another server picked up our table without saying a word or introducing himself. The most surprising thing was the food. The portions have shrunk. My wild salmon was a strip of fish approximately one inch wide and four inches long on dry scalloped potatoes, and cost $27. The four of us had 2 appetizers, salads and a main dish. Spent over $200 and left hungry."

"Food very good once we received it, but there were some errors on our order that took too long to fix. Our waitress was very attentive and I think the issues were in the kitchen. For instance, by the time they re-dressed my burger (I didn't want the dill sauce), my companions were almost finished with their meals and soon after I was the only one at the table with a plate and still eating. Not happy about that. But as I say, good food, fun atmosphere. We'll definitely give them another try."
