"We traveled 45 minutes on back roads to celebrate a birthday and was it worth it. The food was outstanding being both innovative and beautifully presented. This night the chef more than lived up to his reputation. The staff was more than welcoming from the hostess to bartender to servers. You got the feeling they were genuinely happy to have you as a guest. The menu initially struck us as being more limited than normal, but as we progressed it was very adequate and in tune with the availability of local produce. The cheese plate, gazpacho, ravioli, and steak presentation were exceptional. People with limited knowledge of wine may find the list with many unfamiliar names, but we made it through with satisfactory results. Try Millwrights soon"

"The ambiance is quiet, relaxed and cozy, especially if you can get a table by the window with a view of the millpond. The dress code said smart casual although there were some diners in jeans and shorts. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Although the menu is somewhat limited, it's based on what's fresh and available and is not just your typical list of entree's and appetizers. I had the pork belly and my wife the quail. Our food was both visually appealing and delicious. It's a little pricey...1 cocktail, 1 glass of wine, 2 salads, 2 entree's and desserts ran $170 with tip. Very nice for a special night out or when you're looking for something a little different."

"Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Food was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. Salmon was especially good - moist and flavorful. Service was over the top. I was given a black napkin because a white napkin might have left lint on my black pants!"

"Very nice -- was a special occasion and the staff made us feel most welcome. The glass of sparkling wine "on the house" was a wonderful touch and sincerely appreciated. Wait staff could not have been better .. A+. Food was very good... well presented.

"We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary here at millwright 's where We were greeted with warm wishes from the very attentive staff after being seated at a table overlooking the river's waterfall. I sampled the best oysters of my life and for nothing else would return just for another bite. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious and we can't wait to share this experience with friends."

"Very good location. The menu is small but complete. All our choices were very well prepared and inovative.
Unique use of textures and herbatious pallet was used at a level not often found.
Hats off to this chef and his staff.
The lower tavern is historic and well staffed, they offer a seperate bar menu which we did not partake in.
The views from the dining room of the mid-1600's dam and related falls are spectacular."

"We had an outstanding meal. Service was excellent and staff was attentive. The dining area was not too loud, and the windows overlooking the waterfall made for a nice view. We actually even spotted a beaver swimming by. No complaints about the food from appetizer to dessert. We had the pork dish and scallops for an entrée and both were excellent. If I had to nitpick, I could say the Maine lobster was a little salty, and my cocktail was only ok for me, but there is no shortage of inventive drinks and I had no problem devouring that appetizer as it was delicious. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the Hartford area if not the best."

"My wife and I have eaten here twice. Both times we came away thoroughly unimpressed with our dining experience. The food is fine and well prepared. However, everything else really took its toll. The waitstaff are eager to please, but annoyingly amateurish for a restaurant serving food at these prices. The decor looks like it was designed by an eighty year old grandmother. No one in our dining party plans to dine there again as well for the same reasons. I guess if you're someone who gets turned on by dining in an old mill, this place will fit the bill. To me, it reminds me of those typical New England tourist trap restaurants, the one's that advertise, "George Washington Ate Here"."

"We San Francisco residents and friends and family have dined at Millwrights on 2 occasions. Great setting---picturesque and comfortable (except the chairs). Service was casual but attentive. Ah, the food: our son commented that his dining experience was the best of his decade plus in CT. More recently our friend and native of Connecticut rated his experience as one of the "greatest'" he has had in CT. The lamb was outstanding; ditto the stuffed quail. The kale and watercress salad was a uniform hit. Wine options, though not extensive, were first rate (the Federalist chardonnay was new to us who live near where it is made but it was memorable.) Kudos to all!"

"We enjoyed the Prix Fixe Mothers Day brunch and everyone was satisfied. The bread/coffee cakes were excellent, salad very crisp and not overdressed, and fish cooked to perfection. Only complaint was - the pasta (kids menu) was way oversalted and my daughter was too shy to say anything until the end of the meal. It was a VERY pricy bowl of pasta that was only half consumed."

"We went for Mothers Day Brunch. Our first time at Millwrights, although we'd enjoyed Chef Anderson's meals at Pip's at the Copper Beach Inn several times. He does elegant food in a casual, but beautiful atmosphere extremely well. Food and ambiance were fantastic!"

"The entree's options were not for me. I settled on a steak, my second option was Skate Wing (the thing that killed the Crocodile Hunter, I think) My medium rare steak for $33 was tough and riddled with sinew. My wife had the sword fish which was over cooked. We had a sparkling water bottle at the table and the staff kept filling my glass with tap water. Service was either overly attentive or non existent. There were times when there were 3 or 4 people back to back doing something at our little table, we then waited for twenty minutes for the check. The couple next to us commented on how long we waited."

"It took a half hour before our drinks arrived at the table. Ordering our meals was another 15 minutes. The food was very good and we enjoyed trying things with which we weren't familiar. However, the men in our group were hungry when we left."

"Our 3rd time at Millwright's and not a big fan. We don't like the hovering and overfamiliar staff. We order our meals and then don't need another disertation of what's being put in front of us as it's delivered to the table. Many times our conversation was interrupted by the waitress. I admit that I'm not eating fat, carbs or sugar but that shouldn't have an effect on the taste and enjoyment of a steak. I ordered the NY strip which came on the plate cut in chunks, was completely tasteless and chewy. I asked for the sauce on the side which they did and that helped but it shouldn't have been needed. No salt or pepper is provided at the table. The chicken my husband ordered was very tasty. Don't see us running back."

"This restaurant has enormous potential, with a bit of room for improvement - (don't we all):) It should not deter you from sampling their delicious cuisine and beautiful setting! I highly recommend their perfectly seasoned chicken (but would pass on the NY Strip). Kale was flavorful but "drenched" in buttermilk dressing (ask for on side). For those reviewers who complain about "portion size", they are apparently not accustomed to fine dining where quality of produce and presentation are foremost, not piles of pasta or potatoes ... if thats what you want, there are many offerings (I don't need to name them here).
Fois gras was disappointing because I was expecting a "seared" fois ... my error. Service & Maitre' D were flawless."

"Get a table by the window with a view of the waterfall, it's a beautiful background. The ambience of the dining room is excellent, brick walls and subdued lighting. Even though they were busy it wasn't noisy and conversation was easy, no need to shout. Everything was first rate, the foie gras was outstanding as was the skate wing. The pork was rubbed and crusted to perfection, cooked perfectly with that delicate crunch like a good sirloin steak. The pork belly piece that accompanied it was smoky and succulent. The only detraction (this is picky) was the espresso was not up to par compared to the rest of the meal(too cold). I mentioned that to the server and they comp'd us one cup.
Overall one of the best meals in recent memory."

"We ordered the Tasting Menu for dinner and added the wine pairing as well. The food was presented so beautifully was absolutely delicious! "Millwright's was marvelous on Sunday evening. We celebrated a birthday there and it could not have been more perfect. The scenic view, the service, the food, the wines were all Fabulous. The Birthday Boy had a Wonderful experience and we were all very happy with the celebration from start to finish. We particulary loved the slow roasted salmon. It is just yummy! Try this dish if you haven't yet!"

"We enjoy fine dining and were eager to try this new restaurant with the reputation for extraordinary food and a view to behold. We were not disappointed. The warm ambiance and rustic decor was only surpassed by the perfect window seat overlooking the waterfall. As the sun set the reflection of the orchids and twinkle lights in the glass doubled the pleasure. Beginning with the oysters the food was excellent and new blended flavors an experience. Service was friendly and relaxed. Our evening celebrating a birthday was very enjoyable on all accounts."

"Though the food was decent, the value for the money is poor. Customer service was horrible. We went there for a special event, our 24th anniversary. They sat us at a table in the middle of 3 tables where literally the 2 people on either side of me were 18" away. We asked about another table and were told those were reserved.....yet we made reservations 10 days prior to our visit. We were told later that we should have asked for a special table if we wanted one.....but we've never been there before so how could we know. The girl told us she would check about another table but never came back. The service was lacking at best. My NY strip steak was three small pieces and was $33. Not worth the visit at all. Do not go there!!"

"We loved the restaurant!! Service, food and atmosphere were A+!! It was my wife's birthday dinner that I noted when I made the reservation. The staff was wonderful and very attentive to our needs. We were seated in a downstairs quiet corner that had a view of the waterfall. We choose the tasting menu; a 7 course dinner with a wine paring. All courses were really delicious and they matched the wine well!!! This was a wonderful dinning experience!!!!"

"Our group of four selected the chef choise with wine parings which was perfect for us. We were preasently suprised with the course selections that Brent arranged. Course delivery was at a restful pace which we prefer although the accompanying wine did not always appear at the same time - it seemed to be an after thought. We plan to return."

"We had reservations for 8PM but arrived at 7:30 to have a cocktail in the Tavern. We waited for 30 minutes and were never approached by a server. We went back upstairs to find out our table wasn't ready. Then we went back to the Tavern and this time a server took our drink order. After 15 minutes still no cocktails but our table was ready. The service improved. In the opposite direction. We felt rushed. As soon as I finished my appetizer (steak tartare, excellent), the entrees arrived. I found my swordfish a bit dry but I'd never had swordfish before so perhaps that's just my palate. My friend very much enjoyed the salmon. We'll try it again, but for the reviews it's received and the price...I was disappointed."

"this is the 3rd time that i have been to millwrights i think the bldg is amazing and i understand where they are at re: the cuisine, buti feel it is just overdone and pretentious, the staff is so formal and yet they are wearing jeans., the food was lukewarm and i had the pork and pork belly which first the pork was overdone and the pork belly wasn't crispy., our server was competent and not overbearingbut the delivery of the meals was just too much i have owned restaurants even a classical french restaurant in the 70's with an amazing wine list but it was relaxed, authentic andthe food was hot, along with the plate. if i go again i will go to the bar. i want this restaurant to last but take the attitude down a"

"Wonderfully curated wine list. Great view of the river and falls. Engaged, helpful, joyful service. The food: lovely well-balanced flavors, delicious but not obvious -- the salad dressing, and the pea-sauce on my scallops made me think "wow -- this seems so perfect yet I can't tell exactly what is the combination of flavors." I would come here often if I lived closer. This was my first meal and is my new "special meal" restaurant."

"We had diinner on a recent Sunday evening and enjoyed our experience. There were 3 of us, including one vegan so each order was different: steak for one, salmon for another, and a barley vegetable dish for another. The steak was very good and the salmon was also surrounded by asparagus and tiny potatoes and a rich sauce (a bit rich). The vegan dish was not on the menu but was offered when asked and it was excellent:black barley topped with perfectly cooked vegetables: snow peas, sugar snap peas, asparagus, and wild mushrooms - exceptional. We also had a side order of black barley (non-vegan) that was topped with wild mushrooms which one of us liked but another non-vegan thought was too rich as it seemed to be made with a cream."

"I was a little less than impressed with Millwright's. Understanding it was a busy Saturday night, we were shown to our table late and the service was spotty and frankly, just plain awkward. The food was hit or miss. The salad was very good. My main dish - pork loin -- was incredibly salty and wrapped in a sausage-like material. The menu did not mention the sausage wrapping and as someone who HATES sausage, I would have ordered the salmon. The dessert -- a chocolate hazelnut concotion -- was amazing. This visit was not entirely enjoyable and I would have to think twice about going back."

"Had a very nice dinner here. Went with oysters, chicken & dumplings, and the beets for apps. Had the scallops for dinner. Everything well-cooked and delicious. That said, wasn't blown away. (I am somewhat new to the going out for a nice dinner scene. Have been a couple places now. When I went to Mill at 2T I was literally blown-away, i.e. "this might be the best thing I have ever tasted.") Service was great. Like the space, too."

"There is no doubt that Chef Tyler and his team know what they're doing in the kitchen. The food at Millwrights is incredible My boyfriend and I will surely be talking about it for a very long time. The front of the house staff was also extordinary. We felt so relaxed and comfortable, we spent all night there and almost didn't want to leave. This was a superb experience, Millwrights is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in Connecticut!"

"very nice setting. It always amazed me that no other restaurants made a go of it in this location. Had 2 servers, both very nice. Interesting wine list, its separated out by how the wines taste, I prefer a list of all one varietal, etc; but this may work for some.
Although they change the menu with the season, we still had the winter menu on April 5!"

"What more can you ask for? The table that we had requested alongside the window looking over the millpond was waiting for us when we arrived. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and attentive. And best of all, the food was fabulous. Overall, we had a great Easter Brunch at Millwright's! We were even entertained by a mink swimming around in the millpond and climbing along the bank of the brook -- Again, what more can you ask for?"

"We had heard great things, but this exceeded our expectations. Food was exceptional, but atmosphere and view of the water were even better.
