"Five of my friends were visiting from New York so I, of course, took them to several "traditional" New Orleans restaurants, but I knew I had to take them to Root. They loved it. Once again, I suggested we order a variety of menu items like the chicken wings, pickled shrimp and deviled eggs, fried oysters and roasted cauliflower. They loved the appetizers but also enjoyed the steak and duck entrees. The waiter suggested some awesome cocktails and great wine. Overall a lovely meal."

"Root lived up to our expectations. It was an amazing meal! Our server Shane was extremely knowledgeable and just made for a great experience. We loved the charcuterie and the thought that the presentation was stellar. Also amazing were the Grilled Duck Heart Salad, the Aloo Gobi and the Scallops smoked in a cigar box. We recommend Root to anyone who considers themselves a "foodie". Worth every penny!"

"I went to this restaurant on a second date and we had a good time, but this place isn't for everyone. We both consider ourselves to be pretty big foodies, but this place was almost a little "too cool" for us. While we enjoyed just about everything we ordered and the prices were certainly fair, every dish seemed to be overly convoluted and complicated with dozens of disparate ingredients that didn't always come together in a harmonious way. Some things seemed to be on the menu to make a statement rather than because they genuinely taste good. That being said, adventurous eaters and the ultra chic will LOVE this place and I applaud the chef for providing this city with one of the most unique menus I've seen in NOLA."

"My wife and I found Root to be a unique dining experience, from the eclectic decor to the very inventive food preparation and presentation styles. The place also had an energetic and lively vibe to it. The wine selection was a little limited but still had some quality options. Our servers were very friendly, efficient and available to answer any questions we had. This would be a good restaurant to keep in mind if you're looking for dinner before a stop at Howlin' Wolf for live music."

"Food was very good. Generous portions we ordered the chefs board and a few appetizers which was way to much for four people. Everything was deconstructed gastro food. Very interesting very different. The cotton candy foie gras was amazing. Very impressed would love to come back and try the main courses but that will be next time."

"This was the MOST amazing meal I have had in a long, long time. EVERYTHING was amazing! If you love food with amazing combinations, this is your place.
I am still thinking about the dessert with the geranium milk and flowers. I give this place a standing ovation for the most creative and delicious plates of food I have had in a really long time. I will be back every week for sure. I honestly feel like calling these creations "food" is wrong. What they make is art. When I had that dessert, I closed my eyes and covered my ears so I could experience it without any other sensations disturbing me. It was THAT good. Bravo!"

"Wow! I've added a favorite new North American restaurant with Root...it's now in my top 5 and I'm one of those lucky people who travel extensively and consequently get the opportunity to sample great restaurants regularly. If you go to NOLA and miss Root, you've made a terrible culinary mistake. With a group of 7 we sampled the entire menu and were not disappointed with any of the selections; quite to the contrary...they were all amazing and the service (Thanks Ry!) was first class."

"To some Root may seem like its trying to hard to impress with its unusual ingredients and trendy/chic interior complete with exposed pipes in the ceiling and designer art modern chairs. But the food speaks for itself. The sausages were great (especially the lamb) and all of the starters I had were tasty and exciting (the sweet tea chicken wings and the szechuan beef tendon were standouts.) The entrees were very good (I had the bone marrow = meat butter!), even managing to convert the naysayers of the group who were at first put-off by the use of organ meats in the dishes. The menage a fois was a very interesting dish, although it didn't stand up in the taste category to the rest of the meal."

"Root is a very unusual restaurant. Its menu is certainly not the typical New Orleans menu. Wait staff has a lot of explaining to do about what the dishes are, etc. Even with a good explanation, it's often difficult to envision what the dish will be. It is my opinion that some of the dishes had far too many unnecessary ingredients. It's good but could be better. I could not say that any of the dishes we had were truly outstanding."

"Each dish we got was very good....until they added an ingredient that looked "edgy" on the menu, but had no place on the dish. Perfect example is the hanger steak with beef heart gremolata. It was a great steak, with a rich, tangy bordelaise sauce...and a pile of heart shavings on top. My objection is not "eww, beef heart," but rather that beef heart tastes pretty much like salty corned beef, and made every bite of this unctious, delicious steak taste like wet salty corned beef. Once I scraped it off and ignored it, it was great, but why? Just to say "beet heart gremolata" on the menu? Eh."

"What a dinning experience. I have never been more impressed with the staffs knowledge of a menu, not only were they informed on how the food was prepared, but where it came from and how it was grown...most impressive was how the food tasted, the combination of ingredients was out of this world....I have NEVER had a better meal. This was a fantastic experience! We had several dietary requirements, from a vegetarian, gluten free & dairy free and they did not hesitate to accommodate us."

"Very busy and loud so don't go for a quiet romantic dinner. But do go if you like very different and delicious original spins on creole favorites. Seems like all diners were enjoying all of the Menu entrees and desserts as well. Be prepared to spend about $85 per person if you only order one glass of wine. "Went to Root during my annual JazzFest venture to NOLA. Enjoyed the appetizers, and the market fish special was really great. They make condiments in house, and the presentation is fun. Friends had the hanger steak, and it was basic steak and fries. Dessert was sadly disappointing. I think the fusion of flavors didnt play out well in pastries. Restaurant is modern inside and worth a visit."

"Characuterie plate was nearly sensational, esp. the tongue, pickled green & red strawberries, and other sides, though the cured (dried) lamb lacked flavor; the chicken wings tasted like coated with BBQ potato chips and were meaty and perfectly cooked; nice wine selection well priced; duck/bacon fat rilette fine with strawberry mustard accompanying; tendon was more tofu, less tendon; pickled shrimp and deviled eggs wonderful; overall very well done, not in any way too molecular (we have had such gastromonic adventures, Root is well rooted in classic cuisine)"

"We went here for my partner's birthday, and we were blown away! We've lived in New Orleans for over a decade and know good food, and we really enjoyed the twist they put on their dishes, using uncommon ingredients as well as regular ingredients done in unusual ways.
We were treated like royalty - had the best seat in the house (plush leather booth) and a salad on the house. Super nice wait-staff. Wonderful experience - I'd highly recommend!"

"ROOT has a wonderfully imaginative and perfectly executed menu. The presentations are gorgeous and creative - I would even say "out of the box" except that my Cohiba Smoked Scallops were actually served in a box, a cigar box that is. Their charcuterie and pates are the really outstanding feature here."

"We had delicious and interesting, well worth the wait for carefully prepared food. The service did not measure up to the quality of the food. We had to wait so long for a server to check on us after we finished eating that we lost interest in even looking at a dessert menu."

We're overseas (NZ) visitors where there is good restaurant scene in Auckland - lots of fusion menus.
This was our first night visiting N'Orleans and we were excited to experience the local cuisine.
Root was fantastic. Our party of five shared 4 starters, 3 entrees and 3 desserts having discussed the menus with the very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Every dish was a visual delight and tasted delicious, with lots of the dishes challenging conventional thinking e.g. ingredients used to make a dessert.
Overall a little noisy (courtesy of next table diners), a little cool and a little dim - but hey one to remember for ages."

"Our dining experience at Root was fantastic. The food was adventurous and beautifully presented. My party was thrilled to taste dishes that we have never before seen on menus in New Orleans. The only flaw was that some of the dishes, particularly the scallops, were too salty, but overall the food was unique and delicious. "This is a great place to enjoy wonderful food in a hip atmosphere. All the food was wonderful. I am still talking about it to others that have not tried it. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and really gave great suggestions to choose from. We went as a group of three that tried different things so that we can have more of everything. Everything is made in house, except for salt. Had the cured meats that came with pickled vegetables and fruits and strawberry mustard. You have to get the foiellypop. It is to die for! Had the Cuban sea scallops that came inside cigar box, steak frites and pork belly for entree then followed up with root beer float and lemon cake. Everything was great. Will be back for sure. Love this place!"

"The food was good, definitely not for those that are not open minded. We shared a few appetizers to start... the chicken wings were amazing (spicy). The fried oysters with green foam were not bad and the pickled shrimp with deviled eggs was pretty good as well. For the main course I had the diver scallops with roasted cauliflower. The presentation of all appetizers and meals were awesome! Some of the scallops had a lot of sand, so that was a slight turn off. Overall I would have to say that the food, at least what we ordered, looked much cooler than it actually tasted. For desert, you have to try to the cocoa puffs! I would recommend Root for mostly for the experience."

"We are Vegan and we knew going in that in NOLA we were going to find it hard to get great Vegan food. The waiter was very nice and worked extremely hard to make our meal experience lovely. They made some modifications for us and that was helpful. We ate their Noodle Bowl, the noodles were over cooked. We assumed that they didn't know that the noodles shouldn't fall apart. They had some really tasty root vegetable dishes. The beers were had were so tasty, again the waiter did a great job helping us choose."

"The food was truly interesting and excellent, however the service was laughable in it's ridiculous hipster pretentiousness. From a two minute monologue on the details of the acquisition and preparation of "Face Bacon" to a final speech bestowing all the virtues of the culinary world upon a slice of carrot cake, it was an exhausting 2 hour plus experience causing us to not make a return visit with colleagues despite the terrific food."

"Great dining experience with very knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly staff. Recommended for an adventurous diner. We enjoyed dinner so much that we went back the next night for dessert.
