Gastronomy - A Modern American Bistro is modern in every sense of the word, from cuisine and culinary technique to ambiance and service. The principal foundation of the restaurant is that it embodies the definition of Gastronomy, meaning the art or science of good eating. The culinary philosophy is that of a true scratch kitchen, meaning everything is produced in house. Using the term "American" not only signifies the multicultural influences over the menu but the caveat that nearly every item in the kitchen, and wines on the list, will come from American soil. The focus in the bar is equally committed to scratch production, and our mixologist team is dedicated to the art of hand made craft cocktails. Our culinary brigade embraces the art of food with the goal of transforming the culinary scene of Detroit as we know it.

"Wonderful evening. It was our first visit to Gastronomy. We had 3 young children in our party (ages 9,7,5) and the staff was wonderful to them. They all LOVED their 'chef' hats.

"Very expensive. I ordered the 24 hr Chicken and was disappointed. It had very little taste,and I ordered it because it was suppose to be tasty and juicy. The brie baguette was good. My friend ordered duck - that was very good and cooked to perfection. And the beignets were wonderful. I wouldn't rush back. Also difficult to find."

"There was nothing remarkable about Gastronomy. All ok but not up to par with other local up-scale restaurants. I would not go back nor recommend restaurant to others. While the waitress was very nice and friendly thing like clearing table after mean was not very slow and incomplete. All was simply ok but below expectations."

"Had an absolutely amazing dinner here last week. We were celebrating a special occasion and the staff went out of their way to make our dining experience truly memorable. We started with some appetizers, the fois grais (which is served in what looks to be a tea candle holder, very creative), brie and sweet potato gnocchi (which was delicious and is served with some roasted brussel sprouts). Then we tried the soup, I had the fish chowder which I must say was some of the best chowder I've ever had, it was creamy and a little spicy with fresh and yet still somewhat crunchy vegetables. "We figured we'd try the restaurant using a promotional offer for their so-called epic dining experience. We were not disappointed. Extremely interesting food - nicely prepared and presented. Server was attentive and knowledgeable. There was a minor problem with the desserts and their frequent diner program, but the manager handled it very appropriately and efficiently. The desserts, themselves, were exceptional. Even the garden salad was a bit different and huge. May be tempted to return and just order some appetizers and the salad. Restaurant can be a tad difficult to find - but GPS/MapQuest worked perfectly."

"Early mid-week evening dining experience here was outstanding. Everyone, from the valet to the water server, was friendly, helpful and smiled when speaking. The decor is romantic. The lighting is soft and low. The Foie gras progression was excellent! Our walleye chowder and squash soups were hot and flavorful. We tried the gravlox as well as the Norwedian lobster small plates and were wowed by the beautiful presentation and textures. Our chocolate flourless cake was rich and deep with chocolate. We loved the french press Kona coffee!"

"On a cold winter night, we took advantage of the "Epic Three Course Experience" at Gastronomy Restaurant in Southfield, Michigan. At $33.00 per person, this three course dinner is a bargain. Overall, the food was well-prepared and well presented. Service was excellent! The soups,Tomato Soup and Walleye Chowder,were very good. The Chowder was arguably the more exquisite. The two of us atdinner thought the Contemporay Beet Salad outperformed the Gastronomy Garden Salad. Both entrees looked teriffic. The 48 Hour Chicken was tasty, but a bit over-salted. Gastronomy also features many vegan items on its menu."

"We have been here several times and never fail to have an outstanding meal and top notch service. Our favorites this time were the steak tartare and the Brie brûlée , as will as the duck, the halibut and the filet. Of, course the desserts were a perfect end to the meal-- large enough to allow others to sample, but not overwhelming. The presentation makes the whole meal a feast for all of the senses ."

"The food/drinks/servers were great, but the restaurant has an ambiance/management issue. Ambiance is part of the whole dining experience, so hopefully they read some of these reviews. Location isn't great and it was empty. For a new restaurant, the decor is dated and the music doesn't fit. It's not the normal instrumental type of background..think Lionel Richie 'dancing on the ceiling' while having a nice meal at Morton's (it's the old one). The manager dismissed my wife and I when asked to even speak with him. He said they are doing OK if that was our only issue. NOT OK when we are 1 of 3 tables in there on a Saturday night. Not very professional. I'm less than 50/50 on going back. It should have been an experience and not a distraction."

"It has been my fourth visit to this place. I still love it. Service is professional, yet plain and friendly. Food was just excellent with plenty of dishes and flavors to choose from. Menu is changed every 6 or 8 months, so there is always something new about it. Some dishes can not be found anywhere else I know, e.g. stake tartar, bone marrow. So it gives you a mixed feeling of a plain American bistro and a sophisticated European-stile restaurant."

"Before I go too far, I should say that I ate at Gastronomy on a special-event night, when they featured a fixed-price menu made up of items from their regular menu. Overall the food was excellent in its creativity, presentation, variety, taste, temperature, timing, etc. On that basis, I would definitely recommend it and go back myself. Service was very good. The waiter knew every detail of the menu and was friendly and helpful. The only downside was that he perhaps lacked just a bit of the polish that I expect when I'm paying a lot. That comment would extend to the other table service staff as well--nothing really wrong, but just not quite up to the quality of the food. The other staff--maitre d', parking valets, etc. were superb."

"We always enjoy our visits. The Hostesses, the chef, the manager and staff are all very friendly. There is a very comfortable, almost at home, relaxed dining experience. Gastronomy is a favorite. I have spread my impression of Gastronomy to many of my friends and associates. The variety of dishes, the preparation and presentation is the best!"

"The waitstaff was very polite and attentive but, to be fair, it was rather quiet for a Friday night. The salads were a high point of the night! We tried a riff on Waldorf and their beet salad and were delighted with the layers of flavor and the presentation. My husband's entree of salmon and quinoa hit the right notes of sweet and salty. I loved my gravlax. I had vegetarian pho as well and it was beautifully presented but not quite as steaming hot as it could have been. The plating for the creme brulee was lovely and it all tasted fine but nothing mindblowing. I hope the restaurant does well and look forward to returning and see how it develops in the future. Service, salads, and presentation are their strengths right now."
