Farmstead Table
The Zagat Buzz blog is reporting that Farmstead Table is planning to open on Union Street, taking over the former India Paradise spot. According to Zagat, the husband-and-wife team behind the upcoming eatery are looking to feature a contemporary take on "countryside New England" fare, with such dishes as roast chicken, braised short ribs, and lamb shank. The restaurant will have seating for 48, including 4 seats at the bar and 10 seats in the lounge, and an outdoor deck that will come later will have a capacity of 25. It appears that the interior of the dining spot will be rustic in nature, with antique furnishings and tables made from barn wood.

"had a lovely time, delicious special of Sword Fish with Asparagus and fingerling potatoes cooked to perfection..ordered a cupcake as a special desert treat to split with my guests but alas it arrived and it was almost frozen, frosting hard as a rock and the cake was so cold to the touch. They had no microwave to just warm it up a bit and no way of resolving the problem so we declined the desert and were very dissapointed that such a treat had not been carefully thought out."

"This is my 3rd visit to this restaurant the first 2 were perfect and the last less so I ordered different main courses but the salad which I found to be sublime the first time was hurried out of the kitchen the last timeThe dressing was left behind. the dessert of baklava was only fair and perhaps was not baked on the premises The syrup on the top was not good and not enough of it"

"We went to Farmstead Table for lunch on a Sunday. The menu was quite limited and I was surprised that there were no brunch type items. Two of us had dishes made with chicken breasts that were overdone and tough. One of them, a chicken breast on a bed of vegetables had very few vegetables. The service was quite slow even though there were few diners at that time. I was disappointed as I had heard positive things from others."

"Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the food. One person in our group was happy with his meal. The service was fair. Three of us had the fish special, one didn't eat it after tasting it. She didn't complain, but when the plates were removed, the server didn't inquire as to why she left her meal and didn't want to take it home. I don't think any of us plan on returning. Also, the menu is very limited."

"Consistency is the name of the game at Farmstead. I have now dined here several times, and always leave having enjoyed a wonderful meal in a comfortable atmosphere. I don't know what they do to vegetables here, but they have never tasted so good. Their carrot appetizer is amazing. For entrees, their chicken is my favorite, served with beautiful mushrooms, other in-season vegetables and a perfectly silky puree. And the spelt bread is outstanding. A neighborhood favorite for sure."

"I was disappointed. Very spare furnishings, no ambiance at all, really...just a basic sort of 'diner' set up. the food was good, not great - and was priced as if it would be a lot better than just 'good'. It did seem fresh and it was tasty - but no more. The wait-staff was friendly, if not exactly attentive...they also stuck our party of four at a table likely intended for two, even though there were plenty of larger tables available. All in all, the experience didn't live up to my expectations."

"My husband and I had a lovely meal. We loved the spelt bread and sweet butter as well as our appetizers, the rabbit terrine and the gnocchi. The terrine and its accompaniments were outstanding. We enjoyed the beet salad as well, although the arugula on top was dry. I might have preferred the beets and other items on top of the arugula, or a very light dressing on the greens.
We shared the "pierogi" and were quite disappointed. The dish resembled an empanada much more than a pierogi, and lacked the full flavor I would expect from mushrooms. The quinoa was bland and unattractive: try red quinoa next time. Delicious puree though. We also loved our dessert, the apple bread pudding with ginger ice cream. Very nice waiter."

"First time there. Although open table showed them as full, there were quite a few tables open when we arrived at 7 (a Tuesday night). We ordered appetizers and they were literally on the table in 2-3 minutes - it was a little disconcerting - got them before we even got our wine. They were both very good. For entrees were also quite good - we really could taste and liked the uber-fresh ingredients. The bread, as advertised, was excellent.
As others have noted the service was erratic. First the salad and soup came so fast, then a long wait for the entry, then a long wait to get the check and credit card taken. There are so many great new restaurants now open in Newton that we'd return but not a go-to for us. Needs some polishing."

"The menu at Farmstead Table is always very intriguing. In general the sides that come with the proteins are really interesting. However, to date, execution has been a bit uneven. On three visits the chicken dish was perfect, but on each visit one member of my party, on this visit it was me, had a dish that didn't quite work out. This time it was a beautiful pork chop that arrived too rare and then way overdone. My carrot bisque was missing the curry that was promised on the menu. All that said, the service is so thoughtful and the chef came out to apologize, so I will be going back. The in house baked bread is worth a visit all by itself."

"Wonderful salmon, calimari. The chef poked his head out of the kitchen a few times to check on us- which was really a nice thing. It's pricey ( they were out of the $8.00 glass of wine so we ended up with the $29 1/2 bottle) and it added up with just one appetizer, one salad and one main for 2 of us. But the food was exquisite. So worth it for a special occasion."

"Newton finally has some good new restaurants. While this one isn't perfect, the ambiance and quality of the food make it a welcome addition to the neighborhood. My hake (the special) was nicely prepared, though it could have been more flavorful. My husband love the pierogis (he ordered the vegetarian option)."

Offerings choice of tea in a cup or pot is so ridiculous! If you have pots, why serve tea just in a cup? What's the extra charge for? 1/2 a cup of hot water?"

"I met 2 friends for dinner mid-week for a 5:45 reservation. 2 of the 3 of us were on time and we were seated right away. Our friend was stuck in traffic and was about 45 minutes late. While we waited we were offered water but nothing else. The hostess came by to let us know that our table would be needed at 7:45 for another reservation. Translation? We needed to hurry up. It set an unnecessary tone to our night. We felt rushed and when our friend arrived we quickly looked at the menu to move things along.. Given a restaurant of this quality I was dissapointed in this unprofessional approach. As it turned out tables cleared well before 7:45 and our table wasn't needed. Food was decent but was soured by the pressure to hurry."

"I was excited to try this place because of their choice of healthy ingrediets. I had grilled grass-fed beef burger with french fries and aioli. French fries were amazing and aioli was good enough. The burger had beef patty, bacon, and cheese. It was too heavy for me without any vegie on a burger, so I could not finish it. The burger would have been so much better if it had tomato, lettuce, onion, etc. Ambience was good for lunch. Waitor was annoying. Like another person said below, he kept hovering in that small dining room which made us feel awkward."

"Had lunch with a friend on a weekday. Food was fresh and good. But waiter was annoying because he kept trying to clear my plate before I had finished eating, and my glass which still had some of my beverage in it. Even after I had indicated to him that we weren't rushing and would be there a while, he kept hovering close to the table in the small dining room. Otherwise, a really nice place. I'll return, and just hope for a different waitperson."

"I was excited to try this restaurant based on the enthusiastic recommendations of friends who enjoy dining out. I appreciate that they do not overfill the plates, but the portions were skimpy and the prices were high for what was served. The bread was quite good and was probably made at the restaurant, a rarity today. There are very few items to choose from on the menu. I understand they are serving what is fresh and it was fresh, but I wasn't bowled over by any of the three entrees on our table. There are other places I enjoy considerably more. The desserts going by us looked very good, but we did not have enough time to partake."

"This is one of two places in the Boston area (the other being EVOO) that instantly became one of my very favorites. They have done everything right: excellent food and staff, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, simple decor, and diners never feel rushed.
