"The wait staff were incredibly attentive and the manager answered our questions regarding the menu and made great suggestions for our meal. The food was great and there were some unique twists on traditional plates like crab masala (also goat brain masala), butter chicken, and a crispy ricotta filled spring roll dipped in spicy tomato sauce. The wine list was great too. Will go again and bring more friends."

"Just down the street from my place, I finally decided to make Friday night dinner reservations for my boyfriend and I. It was just the right atmosphere. The waitstaff gives you just enough space--not too pushy--but eases you into a fine dining experience. They even provided assistance when we ordered the Golgappa Shots and had no idea how to eat them--grabbing for our phones in helplessness, the manager silently came over, as if to fill our water glass and quietly gave us instructions, unheeded. It was all intuitive and a completely lovely experience. Go."

"Arrived on time w reservation for 2 on Wednesday; waited 25 minutes for table; noisy; service OK (just); was more or less pushed out 1 hour from sitting down so the next twosome could be seated (though other earlier groups were still sitting). I'll go back for the food, which is GREAT!, but the rest needs much improvement."

"Moti Mahal Delux has opened on the UES and is delicious, authentic and reasonably priced. The original Moti Maha Delux is in India with this one being an offshoot. The dishes were outstanding: tiny little samosas that don't resemble grenades; buttery fresh naan bread redolent with garlic and fresh cilantro; shrimp succulent and perfectly cooked in a spicy coconut sauce; I could go on all day. The service by the waitstaff is excellent (water refilled quickly, empty dishes cleared away promptly, all professionally and with a smile) but the maitre 'd and the hostess seemed off. No smile or even eye contact from the maitre D; the hostess, while helpful was frankly curt. I am hoping this was an off day for them as the restaurant was very busy."

"Food was very good at restaurant. My only concern is the staff doesn't seem well trained. Manager was helpful but waitstaff do not have a good command of English and/or the menu. We will however dine ther again because we hope they will work these things out as times goes on."

"Moti is an upscale Indian that sometimes hits high notes - the Dahi Palak kebabs were incredibly flavorful, the naan was perfectly chewy and buttery - but overall the food was too mild for my taste. I don't need to have tongue-numbingly spicy food, but with the Murgh Makhani and Burrah kebabs, all I tasted was butter. And the lamb was clearly not that fresh - ie it was marinated for so long that it lost all texture and was quite dry. The Palak Paneer was actually delicious the next day (when I had the leftovers) as the chilies had had time to infuse the other ingredients overnight. It's not bad for a neighborhood restaurant but I wouldn't make a special trip here."

"GREAT food - I am indian, brought my boyfriend and mom. Mind you, my mom is the best indian cook and has a very discerning taste. She loved every single thing we ordered.
Cons: It was really dark in there. I get making the ambiance romantic with mood lighting, but way too dark, couldn't read the menu without pulling over candles from other tables."

"The lunch special has got to be one of NYC's best kept secrets. After selecting a meat or vegetarian option, you are served 3 appetizer samples, 3 entrees, rice, and naan. During the meal, you are asked whether you want anything refilled. Absolutely yes! Everything was well seasoned & tasty. To top it off, there's an amazing mango soaked donut hole thing at the end. I can STILL taste it. Incredible."

"This place got 2 stars from the Times and was recommended by an Indian friend, but I didn't love it. The food was good, but incredibly rich with butter and oil. We had some signature dishes, most of which were incredibly spicy. I realize that that must be the authentic way to make them, but it was too much for my palate.
The space is nice, though some tables were a bit too cramped. Service was ok, some staff spoke limited English. They were out of some dessert options, about which we were not informed until we tried to order one of them. Overall, not worth the trek to 1st Ave."

"The midday lunch special is a real bargain. The best way to enjoy it is to go with a friend and order one vegetarian lunch and one non-vegetarian. Don't worry about insufficiency of the quantity. "A very disappointing experience. Having read the reviews, including the one in the NY Times, I was expecting one of the best Indian meals I've ever had. However, the reality was very different: the curries were watery and thin, the chicken massala bland and the portion sizes tiny. Coming from the UK, I am used to a very high standard of Indian food - every street has an Indian restaurant on it and you can be assured of a good meal almost anywhere. Unfortunately Moti Mahal Delux came nowhere near the standard of even the most average Indian restaurant in the UK. I have never come out of an Indian restaurant hungry before now and I won't be returning to MMD."

"The restaurant presents a friendly ambiance and lives up to that. The Indian spices are subtle but not meek. The staff is very accommodating but the most important thing is the food. I've eaten at many Indian restaurants but this one is special. It is extraordinary wonderful and the presentation is great. The restaurant itself is beautifully done. The only kicker is that at peak time it does get noisy. If the noise could be tapered it would be totally perfect."

"The food at Moti Mahal is superb. Among our favorite dishes: Murgh Mahkani, Burrah Kebab, Bhindi Jaipuri, Crab Masala, Lemon Rice and for dessert the Ras Malai is a must-have.
My only complaint is with the service. Both times we've gone, we've had to wait to be seated, despite having a reservation, and once we were seated, it took a bit too long for the water, menus, and papadam to come.
But I would attribute all this to the fact that it's still a relatively new establishment that, since the NY Times Review, has experienced an enormous bump in business. They're working out the kinks.
Make a reservation, be patient, and enjoy the sumptuous food!"

"The food was good. The service was spotty at best. It was very slow between appetizer and main course and then when the main course finally did arrive, my entree lagged behind the others by over 5 minutes.
The seating set up was quite poor. The door opens right into the banquette we were seated at. As it was a chilly night, every time the door opened there was a wave of cold air. Also, there was no space allowed for people to wait for their table. In fact, one women put her handbag down on my table and said she had to turn off her cell phone. My table was not a console, I and some friends were sitting there.
The restaurant has not yet received it's liquor license. It would have been nice to have been informed ahead of time."

"the waiter told that there was no menu for lunch, but instead it was a "set Price"(quote) lunch menu, no choices. We were then served our meal. when we were done, we asked to wrap up the portion of lunch we had not eaten. the waiter then said it was an all you can eat buffet(didn't tell us that when we ordered) and we could not take home our leftovers. we did not even know it was a buffet as we were plated and served. there were no signs, or menus, other than the comment of the waiter that it was a set menu. there was no buffet table. in addition, we did not have any additional servings.

"We ate lunch at noon on one of the coldest days of the year. We were seated next to the glass wall that fronts the sidewalk and it was really cold. The table had probably been set the night before so the plates were well chilled and our food quickly became cold as well. For lunch you can only choose between a set vegetarian or non-vegetarian option each of which includes 2 appetizers and 2 main dishes and a dessert. The restaurant is attractive and the food was tasty and the service OK. It was a good value for the price. Unfortunately we couldn't enjoy it because we were freezing even with 2 cups of hot tea. I would like to go back in warmer weather or sit away from the windows and go for dinner when there are more choices."
