"The food and ambience were nice. The service didn't match the automatic 20% tip added to our bill for 7 people. We went on a Saturday night at 7pm and the house never got more than half full by the time we left near 10pm. We could have been out a good 45 minutes earlier - long waits for service and order."

"I have being going to Grand Cafe for more than 6 years. I wanted to take my staff out to lunch as a thank you for a long year of work. We arrived at 11:30 am for our reservation and proceeded to the host station. I said we were here for our reservation and the host said they were not seating for the dining room that lunch and to go eat in the bar. We walked back to the bar, ate a pleasant but not as fancy lunch with a very nice waiter. Then on our way out we saw THERE WERE PEOPLE SEATED IN THE DINING ROOM. I am not sure if it was that we were not dressed well enough, it was a hot day in the city, but he lied, plain and simple. I will never be using the dining room again, and question if I feel like stopping at the bar anymore."

"Grand Cafe is our favorite pre-theater dining spot with a beautiful art deco decor. Menu changes frequently to offer high quality and imaginative food. Try the mussels trio with three different broths. The coq au van had a special twist with the chicken wrapped i bacon; the grilled trout had a tarragon butter sauce. The dining room would be quieter if the open kitchen was not banging cookware."

"I had the pleasure of having breakfast at this restaurant and it was delicious. The food was outstanding and I would suggest the French toast. Service was good but not outstanding. We had to wait about 10 minutes before somebody came over to our table to give us either water or coffee. But once we got our attention of our waiter things are fine. I would still recommend this restaurant and I would go back when I went back to San Francisco"

"We had an unusual set of requirements - Saturday brunch with my wife, 3 month old in a stroller and my parents. We needed parking close by and a 1045 AM reservation. Grand Cafe fit the bill perfectly. I knew we were in good shape when I saw the ramp. The servers were very accommodating for the stroller and for when my parents were 30 min late due to ball game traffic. The food was fine. The shining star was how effortless the staff made the meal. Thanks!"

"We made a reservation for a large group (approximately 15 people) through OpenTable, for a Monday networking brunch. There was some confusion as to the final size of our party, and though I called the day before to clarify that the size had grown to 25 people, I was told that--though restaurant space was adequate--the Sunday staff had no way to communicate this change to the Monday staff. When my party of 25 people arrived on Monday -- all physicians on their best behavior for the purpose of political networking-- we were met with a waiter that was truly obnoxiously rude. No waiter that relies on tips could have gotten away with such callous service, but of course for parties greater than 8, the gratuity is already added to the bill...."

"If your staying in the Union Square area and looking for something a little up-scale with a varied, reliable menu at decent prices and good service, this is the place. We've been coming here for years when we come back to the City and have never been disappointed. The San Francisco Gay '90's decor will have you looking out to spot Paladin. "With the Geary and Curran closed for the month, and ACT acting elsewhere right now - Grand Cafe is a lot less busy than usual, so the noise level was much less than it would be with a room full of theatergoers. The food is really good - just perfect for me. I had roasted kale salad and trout. The service was excellent, but again, there were not very many people to serve - so we got a lot of attention."

"The dining room is very nice and grand, but the service and quality of food was not worth the visit. There are definitely a lot more options outside of the Grand Cafe that would be well worth your money. Freshness is very important when it comes to food. Upon the visit, we continuously had to flag down our waiter for assistance. The coffee creamer was spoiled and curdled. The food was not piping hot, pastries were hard and stale. Overall, a horrible experience for a first visit. Very disappointing and tried to make the most of it, but it was honestly very difficult to do."

"We made reservations but arrived late due to traffic and road construction. We were seated right away anyway. I wish I had had more time to look at the menu but we were in such a hurry. The restaurant is a one minute walk to the Curran Theater and we had tickets for a 2:00 show. Service was fast and friendly and the food was quite good. We made it to the show in plenty of time."

"Although we had a reservation we waited to be seated quite ah who've and then in a corner table. Our waiter recognized us from previous times. We waited forever for our food even thought we ordered quickly and told our waiter that we had theater tickets. The manager finally was flagged down and we waited another five minutes for the food, He did waive the bill for us but we still may not be back for awhile. We had always enjoyed the free parking but were informed it would be $15 but that our car would be returned to us in minutes. We waited for at last 45 minutes although we had texted as soon as the play was over.
Although we have visited the Grand Cafe many times we hesitate to return."

"I wasn't impressed. I think the website and the tour book description over sold it. I expected more. The food was average. Service was average. The atmosphere was very nice. I think for the true foodie I would stay away. If looking for casual evening for drinks and cool atmosphere it's a fine place."

"My lady's birthday was made happy by our wonderful dinner before going to the play at neary ACT. Phillip, our waiter, was simply outstanding. We've been to Grand Cafe several times, it's a special place for us, and worth the 90 mile drive to get there."

"Grand Cafe was one of my very favorite dining venues until tonight. Something major has happened and it no longer has the edge that it once had. It's still a gorgeous setting but the food choices have plummeted to an unappetizing low. The menu is limited to unimaginative choices and nothing had the "wow" factor. Everything we chose had a skimpy feeling beginning with the baguette that was sliced microscopically thin to the crab cakes no larger than a hard boiled egg. The cocktails, as well, came in a laughably tiny glass. The service was adequate, the wait staff was well trained but, i doubt our return will be soon.. However, it remains one of the most attractive dining rooms anywhere."

"We live out of town, but when we come into The City, we often enjoy dinner at the Grand Cafe. This occasion was to go to the theatre with our 20 year old granddaughter. I was pleased that the waiter checked to see if we were headed to the theatre as he brought us our menus. Everything was served in a timely fashion. Our three different entrees and desserts were all very good. T he wait we was attentive and gracious - just right. The decor, as always, was comfortable and elegant. We will certainly return again and again."

"I have been to the Grand Cafe a number of times. The restaurant is located in a old building that the locals describe as "old San Francisco". Food is good, wine list is extensive, and the service from the server was very good too. The last time I was there, for reasons that I could not figure out, the server was in such a hurry. This time, service was good and my colleague and I enjoyed our leisurely dinner."
