"The smaller sharing dishes were diverse and very good. We could have had our entire meal just from that part of the menu.
The low country boil was big enough to share and really good. The red fish was also great and again big enough to share especially with having had someofnthe small plates to start.
The deserts were a different take on classics and outstanding. Share those too."

"It has become a must-do for all of my trips to Chicago. Make your reservation weeks in advance because tables become scarce even three and four weeks ahead of time for Friday and Saturday nights. Love, love, love this place!!"

"We hoped to start our brunch with cornbread, beignets and a biscuit but instead they were delivered with our entrees -well some were, we had to wait longer for the biscuit. The biscuit was certainly worth the wait as it was delicious and our southern friends said it tasted just like those from home, but sadly the cornbread and beignets missed the mark. The beignets were very dense, not airy inside like those at Cafe DuMonde. We also suffered a bit of a service slip when the entrees didn't arrive together. An order of the Johnnycakes came about 10 minuets late as we were told the first order was burnt. That said, the Johnnycakes and the rest of the entrees (shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and mushrooms and grits) were all fantastic!"

"Appetizers were great! We had the rich she crab soup, chicken thigh with onion and pickles and the oysters. My husband and I shared all three. For dinner he had the lamb on grits with smoked ham purée and I had the grits with greens, mushrooms and an egg. Both were amazing. Dessert was praline icecream on a shortbread cookie. Unique cocktails and extensive wine list, many by the glass. Staff was helpful with suggestions. It was a chilly night but there looked like a good amount of outdoor seating. Will definitely be back to try different items on the menu."

"I recently dined at Carriage House with my fiancé and soon-to-be in-laws to celebrate a belated Mother's Day. I had heard such great things about the place especially about their Low Country Boil was and we were not disappointed. We had brought in a cooler filled with ice and ice cream pints as a surprise for my mother-in-law and they were happy to accommodate our request to keep it in their cooler until we were done with dinner. The staff overall was just fantastic. The food - fried green tomatoes, cooked oysters with bacon, corn bread to die for, and of course the boil. Unless you insist on outside dining I would recommend sitting inside because they have great decor. Definitely worth it. Now what are you waiting for, book a table!"

"My boyfriend and I were just in Chicago for a weekend to celebrate his birthday at a cubs game. We decided on Carriage House for a late dinner and were not dissappointed. Our server, Emma, was very helpful and gave excellent suggestions as well as honest feedback regarding cocktails, local beers and the "best" of carriage house.

"initially reviewing the menu, I was a little apprehensive as I'm don't have a strong leaning towards southern cuisine; but every dish my table sampled, from the deviled eggs to the pork shoulder, was delectable. this may be the best food experience I've had in my 2 years at Chicago! The restaurant was extremely noisy, which made it hard to converse, but overall this is a not-to-be-missed eating experience."

"While there aren't a plethora of southern style restaurants in Chicago, this chef sets his establishment apart from all others. The key is the menu having a mix of few true southern staples as entree anchors alonside with a fun, fresh, unexpected culinary flare of everything else done with precise execution. An emphasis on sharing is very well played here starting with the menu layout, a "fabulous" wine & spirits menu. I cannot wait to come back and either try all new items or a mix of new and fav's."

"Wonderful place! We tried the fried green tomatoes, the bacon-wrapped rabbit, the mushrooms and eggs, and the steak with blue cheese. I'm not kidding when I say every dish kept topping the next. My girlfriend particularly liked the mushroom dish (and she doesn't love eggs, so that's saying something), and I thought the rabbit was outstanding. We'll definitely be back - hopefully soon. One of the best meals I've eaten in Chicago in the 18 years I've lived here."

"This is going to sound confusing, but it was to my husband and I as well. Here it goes...The flavors at this bustling "new southern" restaurant are fabulous. We had shrimp and grits that were outstanding. Best I've had outside of Charleston. She crab soup was delicious. We were told about a lamb chop special that was not lamb chops when they arrived. I'm not sure what cut they were, but it was a long very very fatty piece of "meat" with very little meat. The taste was great, however, you can't eat more than two bites of great tasting fat. Diners next to us were commenting on the same thing. A wreck fish special was over cooked and dry, even the shrimp in the dish were dried out, but the flavors were great. Confusing."

"The service was excellent - from the waiter to the water/cleanup staff to the chef himself, who came to our table and who greeted us on the way out. The food was really memorable and every bite delicious. A few vegetarian options would be appreciated. This is a unique place in Chicago with top-of-the line food. "Really enjoyed the food, the waiter was great...I can see it being too noisy later in the evening. Only complaint were the bus boys who almost hovered over our plates waiting for us to put a fork down so they could grab it. This restaurant is not alone in this problem. Somebody needs to tell them that they should not whisk a plate away until everyone is finished eating--UNLESS the person wants it removed..I felt like I was being rushed. Am sure they are just trying to do their jobs, but it was an unpleasant feeling."

"Went for Sunday brunch and loved it so much that we went back for dinner. Brunch was amazing! I would highly reccomend the bloody marys and the French toast! Can't wait to go back for the chicken and waffles."

"I lived in Charleston, SC for 12 years so naturally I was thrilled to snag brunch reservations this past Sunday. Shrimp & grits is a menu staple in Charleston lowcountry eateries so I had to try the Shrimp & grits the Charleston-native Chef served...big disappointment. The flavor was delicious but the portion was WAY TO SMALL. Only two large shrimp and the grits portion was about half of what it should have been. It wasn't just my dish, my mom and aunt got the same thing. Oh and the shrimp had tails AND head attached with uber long tentacles...gross! I will admit that the shrimp and grits seemed to be smaller than the other meals I saw on other tables so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing but it was sooo good, so please...serve more!"

"very disappointing. Noisy w/ too loud annoying music. The food was VERY disappointing. We went for their signature dish: low country boil, but were advised that they were substituting the clams and mussels w/ catfish. Our waiter said it was "very fishy". Collard greens were so tough I could hardly cut them w/ a knife! We won't be back and we will be sure to spread the word that in spite of the rave reviews they're receiving, STAY AWAY!"

"Delicious! We had visited for dinner but this was our first brunch at Carriage House. My fiance is from North Carolina and we brought along a chef friend also from North Carolina and they thought the low country cuisine was fantastic! Favorites by far - the chicken and waffle and the cornbread for any meal."

"It seems all new restaurants in Chicago these days are going the "small plates" route. Southern food and small plates don't exactly go together but Carriage House makes it work. The Fried chicken thigh was a hearty portion (we had two). The grilled oysters were like a decadent southern version of Oysters Rockefeller. And they clearly put some kind of crack in the shrimp & grits dish because the gravy was slap-my-momma good. Save room for dessert though - I didn't and I regret it."

"The restaurant experience overall was very good. The service was impecable, and the food was very tasty, but similar in taste/style to a lot of other restaurants that also do small plates. They had a tasty specialty cocktail list, and some very delicious wines also. Great experience."

"The food was interesting although the large plates were much better than the small plates. The portion sizes for the small plates were sometimes too small, particularly for a party of 6 and even when ordering 2. We were seated by the door so every time the door opened we got a blast of cold air. Having grown up in the south, I have had better pimento cheese and pickles and certainly fried chicken and grits."

"Every dish was exceptional. Loads of ooo's and ahh's. A bit confusing how to order but if you ask, you will get good advise. Nice wines as well; brilliant cocktails. Service was not at the same level as the food; friendly and helpful but not totally competent. At this level of food, you want the same brilliance in service. This should be one of Chicago's top restaurants. It almost is."
