Kuroshio (黒潮) is a fine-dining restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor serving East Asian foods with an emphasis on Japanese cuisine.
At Kuroshio, we pride ourselves not only on serving wholesome foods made from the freshest and best ingredients, but also on presenting elegant, meticulously crafted dishes.
Our restaurant’s name also refers to the Kuroshio current, which hugs the eastern coast of the Asian continent and flows north along Japan’s western coast much in the way in which the Gulf Stream current clings to North America’s eastern coast. The inspiration for many of our dishes originates in the eastern Asian nations through which the Kuroshio current flows. It is the source of most of our seafood as well.
Kuroshio blends and joins the similar and the disparate to create memorable flavors. We look forward to giving you a delightful and memorable dining experience.
"The food was very tasty. My group had the salmon, sea bass, lamb, and live lobster. They were all excellent. The portion sizes were enough for each person, and they even had edamame before the meal. The food was also presented with exquisite detail and beauty. I would go again."

"Everything we had was wonderful. It was our second time there and was consistent from our first time. It was a bit pricey, but you get good, fresh ingredients."

"A gem in Ann Arbor! I dined here while visiting and enjoyed the food, both raw and cooked very much. I just hope the town supports this place, which might be outside the comfort zone of many Midwesterners."

"We went to Kuroship for the second time recently - and came away happy as the first time. The sitting was comfortable - not a bit crowded as you would expect from most restaurants on Main St. The ambiance was great - quiet and relaxing, the family can have conversations without raising our voices. I ordered Ribeye, which is an interesting and delicious take on steak. My wife ordered Duck Ramen and she loved it. Kids have sushis and tempura udons, all of which they enjoyed. Edamame appetizer was a crowd pleaser, while we waited for our food. The whole family had a good outing - so we collectively gave a thumbs-up!"

"I like that they brought edamame to the table after we received our drinks. Complementary as other restaurants bring bread. We had sushi....it was pretty good. I would not say it was excellent but not bad either. The only cooked dish we ordered was the tempura app and everyone liked that. The space seems like it would be good for large parties which is hard in most sushi restaurants."

"This is worth a drive to Ann Arbor. The sushi was excellent. Much better than I would have expected in a college town. A bit pricey but worth it. Hamachi carpaccio is a really great dish. The Miso soup is large, you could share it. The decor and ambiance is so soothing we could have stayed all night. There is a private room for presentations or groups. I will be sure to return to this place. Almost as good as the top spots in Chicago. Arami, Japonais, Mirai etc. They also have alot of non sushi dishes like steak, pork tenderloin, for non sushi eaters. I will try those dishes next time."

"The best surprise in Ann Arbor dining! We had an amazing lunch at Kuroshio- the day's special was camera ready, gastronomically pleasing and economical. Great beer, wine and cocktail selections as well. Can't wait to get there for dinner!"

"Overall a pleasant experience, but an incredibly tiny portion of the beef tataki appetizer ($10), and ditto for the side salad (even if $3). Overall entree prices are too expensive, especially since you don't know what you're getting and you're paying for very expensive designer dinnerware. A nice place but it has a long way to go to persuade foodies and diners that it's worthwhile."

"Quiet, on a Saturday early evening (7-8pm), 2 months after they opened. Other restaurants in the area were busy that night, and for recently-opened restaurants, they were hopping from the time they opened. Sushi was very good. Soup ok. Hard to make up for empty ambiance. Needs more decor- very minimalist, but not in a hip sense."

"It's a very new restaurant and so they're still trying to work out the kinks, so I would say this will be an interesting place to revisit in about a year-- assuming they are still in business. On the plus-side, the food was good, though there were a couple of slight misfires. The spring roll appetizer was tasty though nothing special. My son had the pork ramen and enjoyed that a lot. I had tuna that was presented in a rose shape atop sushi rice, and while it was good, the tuna was cut too thick for me to eat easily with chopsticks. My wife had a pork tenderloin dish where the pork was very good, but everything else-- vegetables and mashed potatoes-- was an afterthought. And after our cocktails arrived late, there was no time for wine."

"I agree with the special features selections the review is offering me to select from. Although it wasn't a romantic meal for myself and my cousin, this could have that atmosphere. I also think the back of the restaurant could be turned into a good spot for a group. Not a large group...maybe 20? I just mean not for 50 or similar. The sushi was very good. The King Kong roll is definitely too big for one bite, so be prepared. I do have to mention the chopsticks...they were a stainless very high polished and slippery...be ready. I saw the Ramen being delivered to another table, quite a large bowl. The tempura shrimp must be popular because there were several servings of that coming out on the plates."

"Beautiful decor. This, as yet, undiscovered new restaurant has great potential. They have just received their liquor license which will put them on the map. Has party room/s."

"Very good food, service was slow. It took 10 min to get drinks for 3 people but it did get better. They seemed under staffed for a Saturday night, our poor waitress was very busy with too many tables to handle."

"We ate here on Valentine's 2013. They had a 5-course meal which included a very lightly seasoned but satisfying miso, a tasty apple ginger dressed salad, a couple rolls of sushi, a generous filet, and a well rounded delectable dessert. It was fairly priced for the special occasion. We ordered a Firecracker roll as well. All the crab, tuna and lobster etc was fresh. The rolls were spot on and presented clean. The steak was surprisingly good. Not many places can pull off a tender cut of steak in addition to fresh sushi. Their alcohol license had arrived and the list was impressive and growing. I expected a little quicker service from other reviews, but was overall pleased. After a rocky start, things are looking up!"

"This restaurant is brand new. The owners are new to the whole restaurant business and you can feel it when you dine there. For starters, the prices are entirely too high for what you are getting. $13 for a Spicy shrimp roll? $21 for a Venice roll that is basically all crab meat? I've dined at Nobu in Miami, Waikiki beach, NYC and Atlantis and I'm pretty sure their prices weren't as high..and Nobu is as good as it gets. Aside from the food prices, the service was incredible slow. We ordered 2 cocktails that took about 10 minutes to make. The waitress did not approach our table until we had been there for over 10 minutes. My husband and I ordered the spring rolls and were very happy. Next came our salads..mine was frozen. Sushi was good."

"Kuroshio stuns with an ultra-modern, well-lit aesthetic on the inside, centred around bold whites, blacks and a tinge of purple. The food is quite good, though one could say pricey; if you're planning on stuffing yourself full, look elsewhere. The sushi/sashimi plate is excellent, and the dessert tiramisu is delicious. They don't have their liquor license yet, but once they do, the bar is probably one of the sleekest in town to down some Asian fusion cocktails."

"There was a restaurant week special and their menu was misleading. From my understanding the dessert was included in the restaurant week price but when we got the bill it was separate. I thoughf it was very misleading and I felt like we were kind of ripped off."

"We were there for the opening. As far as openings go it was very good. It took a while for our food but the atmosphere helped to calm the situation. The owners came out to say hello, and the managers and wait staff made sure we had everything we needed. I will have to go back soon and see how they are doing after being open for a few weeks."

"We went to Kuroshio for restaurant week. Started with the miso soup which was delicious and a large portion too but our entrees were just okay. I think there was nothing special about the vegetable tempura although it was tasty. My friend had a variety of nigiri and a roll that he felt was just alright as well. I would recommend Sushi Town for anyone looking for fresh fish sushi, they never disappoint. Also, I think Kuroshio would benefit from a less sterile looking restaurant. I felt like I could have been eating at any type of cuisine. Overall the service was great but I probably won't go back because it is fairly pricey and the food didn't wow me."

"We went for an earlt dinner, so it was prety quiet. The place had only been open for a few weeks, and they didn't have a liquor license, which they called to inform me about beforehand. The decor is beautiful, and the food was ok. The service was spotty--either 3 people falling over us or no one was around. For example, it took awhile to get out coats. Would be worthwhile to try again after they settle in a bit."
