"Two teenagers, us - the middle aged parents, and my 70-something year old mother had a memorable evening celebrating my graduation from a masters program. Luckily, my kids are adventurous eaters and took the opportunity to sample bone marrow with toasted bread, a mushroom crepe, lobster with a rich orzo sauce, etc. The portions were large for a French restaurant and all the food was beautifully prepared. The desserts were marvelous and the waiters solicitous. I would love to go back next spring for my daughter's high school graduation!"

"As frequent diners at La Bergerie for many years, every dining experience has been simply exellent; not one mishap. We had dinner on Mother's Day, and the restaurant was particularly crowded. In spite of the larger crowds, service was excellent. We ordered from the fixed price Mother's Day menu to sample "non regular" items, and were delighted with our choices. The Foie gras appetizer was absolutely amazing. It was well portioned and perfectly cooked. The escargot was also a stand out. If you try this, make sure you have ample bread for dippint the buttery garlicy broth. We both had the fillet, and both were cooked to our exact specifications, and expertly seasoned. I highly recommend La Bergerie, especially the Thursday Night Out."

"Mother's day fixed price menu had a good variety of choices for each of the three courses. The risotto was perfectly seasoned. The veal dish was expertly cooked; very tender and flavorful. The curved booth seating was very comfortable; the cushion was great for back support. Service was attentive pleasant and responsive."

"We discovered that everything on the two tasting menus can be ordered à la carte so we ordered the oysters on the half shell. They were the best oysters I have had in a long time--possibly ever. They were very fresh, large, plump, and well-chilled. They were prepared correctly--properly disconnected from both halves of the shell before reaching the table. They rested in the deep side of the shell with their liquor (juices). Delicious! Seriously, I would go back repeatedly just for the oysters. But the rest of our meal was wonderful, too. Tempura fried soft shell crab--not overcooked. They retained their light, juiciness while still having a crispy exterior. They were served with lemon risotto, which was a lovely complement to crabs."

"We came here to celebrate my boyfriend's 35th birthday. I LOVED my duck prosciutto, it was definitely one of the best appetizers I've ever had. My boyfriend started off with the onion soup - he said it was standard and tasty. I had the veal flank steak as my entree and loved every single bite of it. It was SO tender and melted in my mouth. The portions were on the smaller side, but enough to fill me up. I had the cream puff pastry with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce for dessert. I had one bite and then was too full to finish it. In hindsight, I shouldn't have ordered dessert! My boyfriend had the assorted sorbet. It was the perfect palette cleanser. The mango sorbet was very really tasty"

"We were treated like royalty --- greeted by Lauren, icy champagne and frosty glasses magically appeared as soon as we were seated at our favorite corner table which was adorned with a gorgeous arrangement of fresh lilies, prompt and fastidious service in every respect, delicious dinners from the two "amuse bouches" to delightful soufflés for dessert. All in all, this was an unforgettable evening, for us and our guests. KUDOS!!"

"Le Bergerie always does a nice job. Service is impeccable and a truly refreshing. Meal got off to a slightly slow start this time, but they were busy. All food as delicious short of one entree on the pre-fix - a lobster # with a risotto. The lobster was cooked nicely - out of the shell, but the liquor in which it was cooked overwhelmed some of the flavor and the risotto was clearly past the point of return - a very gummy consistency. The lamb loin stuffed with lamb sausage is truly dangerous :) and the foie and oysters as first course were perfection. Of course, you have to have the soufle for dessert and it didn't disappoint - it never does. All in all, we truly enjoyed ourselves, as we usually do."

"Most of the food was fantastic! Only items we did not care for were the creme puffs (which just tasted like they were still completely frozen and did not have much flavor) and the lobster, which was overcooked and a little chewy.
Server did not have very strong wine knowledge but was good overall. We had a great experience. It was a very expensive experience, but we really enjoyed splurging on a really good meal."

"Good food, brisk yet attentive service, but pricey. I had the vegetable plate which was $29 and it was a bit greasy. The salad was delicious - all the vegetables were fresh. The server was very accommodating with our 8 year-old daughter - she had the caesar salad without anchovies or egg (and gobbled it up) and plain pasta which she also enjoyed. The bread was warm, crispy and delicious. My other dinner companions had the Grand Marnier souflee, banana flambe and crepes suzette and everything was polished off with glee. Not sure I would go back on my own, as traditional French restaurants don't typically have much to offer vegans, and it is very expensive, but my mother-in-law was thrilled and that's worth every penny."

"We went to La Bergerie for our wedding anniversary. Service was very attentive but food was not as good as I remember it - not bad, just not as terrific as I expected. My lobster was chewy and the salad was uninspired. Husband's filet was excellent though. They provided a nice complimentary chocolate something for our anniversary and took our picture, but then neglected to give it to us at the end of the evening. Still a nice place for a special dinner."

"We went on a Thursday night with a small group of friends to take advantage of a weekly Thursday night entrée special. The night we went it was roasted veal loin with wild mushrooms, which was excellent and a great value. Other courses were regularly priced, but a selection of wines was specially priced as well.
La Bergerie is always a special treat. It provides classic, traditional, more formal French dining and is an icon in Old Town Alexandria."

"This place is a hidden gem that must be sought out…literally. Upon my arrival at the address, I almost missed the place because the sign was so small. But after a quick phone call they directed me and I was able to find the restaurant on the second floor of the building. It is very small and intimate with a cozy ambiance. My date had the pheasant and I had the rabbit with a nice bottle of wine to wash it down. The service was a little too spotty for my taste in the beginning but that may have been because the place was filling up. Other than that, I was a great experience. Must visit."

"We had the Easter fixed-price menu. There was a wide selection of dishes. My wife had the La Bergerie salad and Black Angus steak with a strawberry tart for dessert. My son had the pate, crab cakes and profiterolles for dessert. I had the Scottish salmon, braised duck and Grand Marnier souffle. The service was prompt without making us feel rushed. The steak was done just right. The crab cake was moist and tasty. My braised duck had a lot of flavor and seemed to fall off the bone. Another wonderful meal at La Bergerie. We'll be going back soon for my wife's birthday."

"I took my boyfriend for his birthday celebration dinner. We had been there before last December 31 for NYE. I had been there 4 times. Food, service, ambiance, noise, and overall are fantastic and wonderful to keep us up. We had a blast time but I will be there again. I hope so, hee hee hee......"

"The restaurant can be very good -- it's rated 26 for food by Zagat -- but it's uneven. On three separate occasions over the past month, we've had quite different results. Their restaurant week fare was exceptional -- in choice, and in taste. Their Valentine's Day meals were below average; the kitchen was overwhelmed. Last night (a Saturday), the food was just average plus. The setting and service, however, were very good, as always."

"I love the semi-circular banquettes with nice table settings, very romantic. The scallops with fennel was a great appetizer. My partner loved his sliced venison. My kampachi fish was tasty but the crust was soggy. The accompanying veggies were a cut above in flavor. The service was relaxed and it was important to be patient for this birthday dinner. They treated us to a nice birthday torte on a decorated plate (I noted this when I reserved through Open Table). We enjoyed the elegantly served decaf coffee. The only surprise is that the snapper special fish entree which I read about online was not considered to be an 'entree' for the purposes of our restaurant.com coupon. It's a nice place for a celebration dinner, old-school style."
