Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Yaletown, Minami Restaurant delivers one of the most unique and innovative dining experiences to Vancouver. Minami follows the pioneering footsteps of sister restaurant, Miku for introducing the Aburi style or flame seared technique to Vancouver’s thriving sushi scene in 2008. Aburi sushi requires no soy sauce or wasabi, as the chefs create specialty sauces using non-traditional Japanese ingredients to complement the flavor properties of each variety of fish.
From the kitchen, seasonal and regional ingredients are integrated into dishes to reflect the diversity of responsible food choices. Traditionally trained Japanese chefs are inspired by global flavors and cutting edge techniques to create a new style of cuisine. "As a first time experience the restaurant was perfect! The server we had was very knowledgeable and explained the history of the restaurant and such, he did such an amazing job!!! The food was spectacular, everything was cooked perfectly, the sable fish to be exact! Oysters and sushi were great!!!! I would definitely recommend this place to my friends!"

"I really like its location since it is so close to the skytrain station. Less than a minute walk. The staffs were super friendly and full of passion. Food was awesome, very different from the "traditional" japanese cuisine. I highly recommend aburi salmon sushi, miku roll, and kaisen soba. All desserts I have had were amazing and I really look forward to have mango lassi which i haven't tried yet. I love the ambience although it was a bit noisy. Minami is definitely worth trying!! You will love it indeed!!"

"We had a wonderful lunch. Right from the beginning everything was perfect. The waiter was extremely helpful and everything he recommended was to die for. The flavours were exceptional. We are 5 gals that meet for lunch every 2 months and have tried many different establishments and we all agreed this has to be one of the best we have tried. Wonderful, Wonderful!!!!! "For the price of the food, it's below what I think it should be. Service was only so so. The food is good but portion is small and certainly no more outstanding than other more price-friendly places such as Guu, Kingyo or Hapa. The concept is essentially an edited down izakaya that looks like a high-end alcohol focus bistro. The space is nice-enough, but lack mood and emotion.
Overall, I give this place a pass."

"The notable differences between the Mike and Minami's menus are that Minami has a more beef centered menu whereas Miku, a more seafood centered menu. The food was not short of amazing, however don't expect that it's going to be quick if you don't order everything at the same time. Service was attentive even with a large party near our table (8-10). They changed our plates regularly and didn't mix up whose tea belonged to whom when taking it away to top up with hot water. The decor is nice, fit for the Yaletown scene but the atmosphere and noise level resembled more of a lounge than a restaurant, a bit on the loud side, so not exactly where I'd recommend for a romantic dinner if you want to talk comfortably without raising your voice."

"Had the menu with sake pairing, which was excellent --- interesting and unusual sakes. I enjoyed my Wind25 canteloupe-flavoured cocktail. All the menu items were very good, but the tuna tartare, the aburi salmon sushi, chicken foie gras gyoza and sablefish were outstanding. It's a beautiful environment, and the service was thoughtful and assiduous, though momentarily distracted about our sake pairing at one point. Now that I've sampled from the menu for this special occasion, next time, I will go for a more sushi-focused dinner with some of my other favourites added to it."

"Before eating at Minami, I knew next to nothing about this restaurant except that it was a highly rated sushi spot. I was expecting a good, albeit traditional, Japanese fare. My actual experience was nothing short of amazing. For the two of us, we ordered the Minami Shokai (Chef's tasting menu) and a few other plates to share. Every single dish that we sampled gave us a completely unique and unexpected flavour experience. If this is your first time...do yourself a favour and order the Shokai. The next time I am back in Vancouver, I will be taking the next step and ordering the Minami Omakase. Worth every penny!
Oh, and I would like to mention that the service was wonderful as well!"

"I loved this restaurant. Went with my family from out of town. All impressed by the wonderful plate presentation. A bit pricey, but it worth it. Next time, don't rush us, please!"

"the house special aburi sushi are very delicious, along with the Kale appetizer. However, the price is over the top! 13 dollars for 5 pieces of gyoza (dumplings)? 17 dollars for a small plate of soba noddle? It's a bit ridiculous and I will not recommend my friends to visit the restaurant."

"I was abit leary about Japanese Fusion food...and having gone to MIKU many times I thought this place was worth a try. The service was outstanding and when asked if we could move to a quieter table in the corner that seated 4 people(we were only 2) they didn't hesitate. A bit pricey but well worth it. Would recommend this place and I would certainly go back."
