"As usual Devi did not disappoint. The lamb chops are seriously the best I have ever tasted. The kale chip and sweet potato appetizer was delicious, as well as the paneer and zucchini appetizer. The coconut shrimp biryani entree was superb. Their homemade ice cream is so yummy. Especially the caramel flavor! But, my favorite dessert is the Emperor's Morsel....to die for! I will return to Devi again and again."

Food is overal solidly spicy but not that hot compared to most Vindalos in NY. We could have just enjoyed the wonderful appetizers alone. "Devi was great. I had made a reservation with a request for a table by the window and they ACTUALLY listened. This is rare in my experience.. The hostess was very sweet and the service impeccable. Food at Devi is divine. They're very in tune with social media as well, and i benefited with a free appetizer AND a 20$ gift card - just from checking in on foursquare and liking them on Facebook. My only tip is to be wary of the candles near the window. They're real and I almost knocked them down with my coat. Oops. Overall, amazing experience. Will Devi-nitely be back :)"

"i have been to Devi several times as I used to work near Union Sq. and this was a gem among many restaurants in the neighborhood. What i experience in Devi every time is what i would get in India but with twist that does not deviate from the origin of the dish. food to me is an exciting balance of color, aroma, texture and flavor and Devi hits the spot on all senses. Then comes the quality of ingredients.. be it a game dish or their famous lamb chop... my mouth waters as i type. SLURRP! and then the plating that would distract to you know whats being served on the table next to yours. What truely makes my day at Devi is the people. warm, smiling and consistently knowledgeable."

"Love this restaurant, it's a gem, will definitely go back. There were 4 of us at dinner both meat eaters and vegetarians. Everyone loved it. Devi was the first Indian restaurant to be in the Michelin restaurant guide and after eating there we all know why! Everything was delicious, the service was excellent, the decor warm. We could hear each other speak, a rarity in nyc restaurants. Thank you Devi Nyc for a beautiful dining experience! We will be back!"

"We went for lunch and it wasn't very crowded. At one point we (there were two of us in our group) were the only people in the restaurant. When another couple came in, they were seated at the table right next to us, despite the whole rest of the restaurant being empty. Which was bad enough, but then the restaurant turned off the ambient music. Which just made for an uncomfortable experience all around -- it was so quiet and we were so close to the next people over that not only could I hear their entire conversation, but I could hear them chewing their food.
That aside, the food was really great, nicely spiced. We did the chef's tasting (without wine pairings because they weren't serving wine that day)."

"This is a beautiful spot, giving the diner a feel of coziness and comfort. The two appetizers tasted were wonderful: a lamb sausage and a combination of Indian cheese, with zucchini, roasted peppers. And the desserts were some of the best I ever had in an Indian restaurant: ice cream with pistachios and rose water, and a fried bread pudding in a very soft and just a touch sweet cream (not nearly as heavy as it sounds). The main courses were disappointing. The lamb vindaloo was spiced nicely, but there was nothing special about it. The tandoori shrimp was pretty awful. Three large shrimp, one way overcooked, the other two so-so. Very salty and no flavors. Fried okra was nice, and the chutney was interesting."

"This is not Devi as we used to know it. The menu has become much more ordinary, the service is lackadaisical. We were informed--not as we walked in, but after we sat down and started to order--that they were in the process of renewing their liquor license, so there would be no alcohol served.l I know the place has gone through some changes in the past; these changes seem to be very sadly decisive."

"Best Innovative Indian hands down! I read some recent average reviews but I guess everyday isn't Sunday! Gorgeous venue, great friendly service (they are not formal like a pretentious steakhouse or other 3 star NYC restaurants but simply more human!)
I am a vegetarian and the soy appetizer as super. My girlfriend enjoyed her bhel puri and coconut shrimp. For main we got the jackfruit biryani. What aromas without being too heavy. The drinks selection was great! Definitely going back.

"Not really sure what single reason left us dissatisfied. The decoration is probably original to somewhere but seems a bit carnival-like in Manhattan. The food was good, though the menu was limited. We asked for hot and did get spicy food, so that was fine. The servers were kind but somewhat forgetful. There was no alcohol, so we ordered a drink and tea and the tea didn't come. We were upstairs, and it felt dark, and the voice of the guy two tables over was booming all around. We saw others wanting another table being refused but the table they wanted was never occupied during our stay. The restaurant was only half full on a Friday night. I guess it's ok but somehow it lacks soul...."

"Just hit the spot! Had the tasting menu with 7 courses with my girlfriend and every course was a dream. I am Indian and love traditional fare but devi excels at presenting the same traditional flavors with modern accents. The highlights were coconut shrimp bruschetta and the eggplant bhartha. Great ambiance, very friendly staff. Its an special occasion restaurant not something u just wanna walk in for a casual meal and then crib about high prices. (i could see many other diners talking about prices here) Definitely going back!"

"Unfortunately, they have lost their liquor license, hopefully only temporarily. The food has suffered somewhat since they changed chefs as well. Indeed, their chicken tikka masala is very creamy and sweet and tastes like something from a second rate Indian restaurant. The overall mood of the restaurant when we went - on a Saturday evening - was quite somber, as if they are on the verge of closing. Actually, they had closed on 4/1/12 as they were going to be replaced by the fast foodish and generally dreadful Balucci's. Regrettably, they are now lost in some vague no man's land between the classless and tasteless Balucci's and a high end Indian restaurant. It is a profoundly sad development."

"Went here for lunch the other day. From the appetizers to the desserts and the side dishes, everything was super tasty. The spices were all rich and not overwhelming. The appetizers were beautifully done (pyramid-shaped piri) and the desserts were just amazing. Atmosphere and decor was also so beautiful and the staff was very kind and nice."

"NYC has some great Indian restaurants, but Devi is among the best. The old-India décor made me think of tasteful equivalents in France when they “do Medieval.” The staff were easy to talk to and wine knowledgeable, offering a taste of what we ordered by the glass. The list features biodynamic practices and women vintners. The appetizers and main courses were mostly ones we’d never heard of (sag paneer was a side dish), more fun. The two appetizers we had, both “tikkas,” were quite different in taste and texture and equally excellent, both served with a bit of something like guacamole—-we’d have enjoyed a bowl of it--but with other tasty tidbits too. The tandoori halibut had a gently spiced sauce and hearts of palm. In sum, really very good."

"I wouldn't go back despite the pleasant ambience and kindly waitstaff. Food is undistinguished, server forgot to order my appetizer and I sat there for five minutes while my dinner partner watched his appetizer--exactly the same as mine--cool. Most astounding: a cup of coffee was $6! That's ridiculous! What can I say? Even during restaurant week, it was half empty."
