Sides Hardware and Shoes - A Brothers Restaurant
Brothers Matt and Jeff Nichols named Sides Hardware and Shoes in tribute to Milburn Sides who opened his store in Los Olivos in 1901. Serving breakfast Friday, Saturday and Sunday, lunch and dinner daily, enjoy The Brothers “bacon steak” – a thick cut of house-made applewood smoked maple bacon, Huevos Rancheros and Cinnamon and Golden Raisin Beignets for breakfast; the Hammered Pig Sandwich of Fried Pork Tenderloin with Apple and Mustard Seed Slaw, a classic Brothers Burger and fresh Albacore Fish Tacos for lunch; as well as Fried Chicken, Lamb Sirloin and Salmon prepared with seasonal ingredients. Featuring eight local wines, stored in kegs and served on tap as well as a full list of Central Coast wines.
This modern wine bistro welcomes you with warm colors, natural woods, cast iron, leather, vintage style lighting and ceiling fans, paying homage to American craftsmanship from the early 1900’s.

"We chose Sides for dinner because of terrific lunch experiences. Sadly, we felt the food preparation did not live up to the quality we had expected based on our lunch experiences. At this visit we found the fish special to be excellent as well as the crab tower but the lamb ordered as medium was undercooked and chewy; a fact recognized by the waitress. who offered to return it 3/4 of the way through the meal. She did give us a complimentary dessert as compensation but......you just don't forget the lamb! The ambiance at Sides is excellent and, if the weather is warm, sitting on their patio is not to be missed. Jenni was a terrific waitperson! All this said, we will continue to look forward to Sides fo our lunch excursions"

"four people with different tastes. A vegetarian, one on a low carb diet and two who just wanted to enjoy dinner.
We started with am entree called Frico (Parmesan crisp). Think of a thin layer of outstanding mashed potatoes that are baked with a Parmesan crust, covered with pan fried greens and vegetables in an amazing sauce.
The ladies both had Pan Roasted Scottish Salmon in the chef's wonderful red wine nage sauce. I had a sea bream served with a crispy skin over a bed of vegetables in another of the chefs sauces. My friend on the low carb diet had Oven Roasted Pork Rib Chop with a maple-Davy Brown Ale sauce.
The bottom line is we ate great food highlighted with amazing sauces. This is our second visit and it will not be our last."

"This is a neat little place in the heart of Los Olivos, a cute town in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Especially if you are staying in one of the Inn's in town or nearby, very convenient and easy to get to. This is one of the better restaurants in the area. It's not very romantic, and the dress is casual, so if you are looking for something of that nature, another restaurant (like the Ballard Inn) is a better choice. However, some of the restaurants in the area are not open early in the week, and this is a good choice. Also a good choice if you like a casual atmosphere and a bit of energy."

"Everything about the dining experience was fantastic. Food was presented and cooked perfectly and tasted great. Ordered the Roasted Pork Chop and the Prime Top Sirloin. The pork chop might have been the best I've ever had; just slightly pink, moist, flavorful, and the apple-Davy Brown sauce was killer. The Sirloin was fork-tender and delicious. Excellent desserts capped off a great meal. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. A great night - will definitely be back."

"There is much to say for restaurants that have a small menu that seasonal changes in that they can control every dish quality that goes out to it's guests. The food was simple yet exquisitely prepared to order. Loved the fact that albeit we weren't VIP guests, had a special occasion, or whatnot..the owner and his staff made a crucial link in making it's guests feel well attended yet not over burdened or tending awkward service....my compliments to them as restauranteurs !! This is a must stop in Los Olivos or even a destination eatery..! Will certainly be back...."

"We were welcomed by a very pleasant hostess and taken to our table without delay. Our waitress, June, made sure that everything was done correctly, and she checked to make sure that we were pleased with our dinner. "I had made reservations about a month in advanced and when I showed up at 6:30, the place was half full. Guess what, they put us in the worse table by the kitchen and where the servers pick up their drinks and silverware. And to make it worse, the table for 4 made it really tight for the servers who has to avoid us when they walk past with food. We asked for a different table but was told all the other tables were requested by dinners!
BTW, there was another reviewer on Yelp who had the same issue as us. So this must be something that happens a lot."

"I read other reviews of this place and I must have hit on an off day. When you make a reservation, are called to confirm the reservation, and then are seated at a table halfway into the kitchen behind the cash register while people who walked in ahead of you without a reservation are seated at a better table, meaning no kitchen/server noise and no kitchen odors, a positive experience is not in the offing. About the food I will say that it is brave to serve sautéed kale but there is a reason no one else does it. The bar and wine service is well conceived, the wine list not unreasonably priced. Hopefully they will get the rest of it together."

"This is a charming restaurant with great food.
We started with burrata salad which had the unusual and great apricot compote with the cheese and brioche. My wife had the top sirloin. The quality of the steak was excellent and it was cooked perfectly. I had the pork rib chop. Again the meat was great and cooked well. What made the dish was a sauce that enhanced the flavor of the meat and the mashed potatoes.
One criticism is the vegatbles could be cooked a little more for my taste. The quality and style of cooking are very good but a little too al dente. It didn't keep me from finishing them.

"This is the way food should be made and served. These guys really know how to cook. My husband and I both had the special of the evening the grouper with chorizo which was excellent. The flavours were wonderful. We also had the salads for starters which were so nice and fresh tasting with just a light yogurt vinaigrette. We were so impressed with this restaurant that we booked there again the next night. This time we again had the same salad as starters but my husband opted for the thick cut pork chop which he enjoyed and I had the bolognaise with pasta that was excellent.

"For breakfast or brunch on the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday only) this is the place to go in the Los Olivos area. Everything is fresh and tasty, and the bacon steak is beyond excellent. Recommend it highly!"

"Overall we were a bit disappointed. The appetizers were huge. The server didn't warn us. The brussel sprouts were greasy and salty and just too much. They could have served 1/3 of amount and that would have been good. H had the hammered pig and it was dry. My scallops were very good. Service was fine but nothing outstanding. For all the great reviews we had read, we were not impressed with our meal."

"We can't wait until they open their new restaurant at the "Red Barn" location. The menu at the Sides Hardware is so very limited and not what we expected from Brothers...We have been faithful diners with the Brothers since the bed and breakfast Inn on First Street in Solvang and know they can do better. Miss the muffins!!!"

"Love Sides Hardware and Shoes. The food was terrific--love the browned brussels sprouts and the banana-chocolate chip bread pudding. The service was outstanding, from adjusting our reservations from 2 to 4 on a busy Friday night, to the server. A very good price point too. This was my second time and I'd definitely go again."

"The service by our waitress was the worst I've every received. We saw her 3 times all evening. We asked a few questions about the specials which she answered as if we had no business to ask this of her. Then she came back and took our dinner orders. Before we could finish, she took the menus and the wine list. She never gave us the opportunity to ask for a drink. Considering that Los Olivos is pretty much run by the wine business, it pretty absurd that we couldn't even chase down a glass of wine to go with our meal. We thought we'd wait until she came back past the table and then ask if we could put in a drink order, but she never came back until our plates been cleared off the table and it was time to pay the bill"

"The food is special and well presented, however the experience is diminished because the tables are oversized and the room has VERY poor acoustics (read LOUD). Very difficult to have a conversation while enjoying good food."

"This new incarnation from the 2 brothers who formerly had a restaurant called Brothers in this same town, is a lovely spot for great food. Though much smaller than their other place, the new establishment certainly is a a gem. Their house-cured bacon and hammered pig, and any pork-related special of the day, are not to be missed!
My only concerns have been "overuse of a good thing"...they find a garnish, seasoning, or condiment and fall in love with it then proceed to use it to distraction: too much red bell pepper in the breakfast potatoes (and the potatoes are chopped to smithereens for some strange reason), too many capers in the brussels sprouts and several other dishes, too much pepper on the flatbread. 'Nuff said.

"For a casual California lunch, you can't beat it. The main courses were excellent (especially their dishes with pork and bacon) and the desserts were special - particularly the beignets with ice cream! The service was warm and professional. Can't wait to return for dinner or breakfast."

We went for a romantic Valentine dinner but never being the the restaurant before we did not realize the tables were so close.The couple next to us entered our conversation to our surprise and continued to interrupt our dinner. We will definitely visit Sides Hardware again but maybe not on such a busy evening."
