"I took my wife to Affäre, based on a friend recommendation, for our anniversary. Being a unique cuisine I figured my wife and I would go outside of our comfort zone and let the chef decide. Our server, Victor, was very open to the idea and proceeded to bring us a three course meal with a wine paring for each course. Victor was very well versed in the history of the restaraunt, chef, food science and was a culinary grad himself. After our fantastic meal, the chef, Martin, came out and asked us how our meal was and how we heard about them. It was a experience to remember and we important to the entire staff. Affäre is now the place that I will make a point to go to on every occasion possible."

"Beautiful and delicious plates of food. Beautiful waitress. Great beers and great wine list. More than just a German restaurant. Has to be one of Kansas City's best slow food restaurants. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates creative food preparations and delicious food. The staff was highly knowledgeable about there menus and gave great suggestions on wine and beer pairings for the meal. Perfect location in downtown Kansas City to enjoy before a symphony or on of your favorite concerts."

"My son recommended we eat at The Affare to celebrate his graduation from UMKC. He prefers unique and tucked away restaurants, so we weren't sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised to find our dining experience to be one of our best. The food was delicious and the presentation very high class. Our server Katie was pleasant and friendly, and helped us choose our meals. All were satisfied and we will come back!!! May be our son did learn something at college- like how to fall in love with restaurants he can't afford!!!!"

"My family from Los Angeles, who frequent fine restaurants, had carnal reactions to the food and entire experience! "Absolutely exquisite." Portion sizes were ideal, flavor was intensely present, stout German beer was "the best ever to have drunk," and service was most attentive and knowledgeable than they have experienced. Upon arrival, my relatives were shocked to find "this Kansas City gem" cleverly hidden away, unassuming and unannounced in the vibrant Crossroads District. Affaire will undoubtedly be bringing them back to KC, and will be a must-dine recommendation to their friends."

"Go with time to enjoy 4 courses at a nice pace. This is not fast food. Keep in mind these are small plates but when combined into 4 courses it adds up to perfection. Try the prezel bread sticks and the brats as appetizers. The beet salad and the Oktoberfest are also great starters. My favorite item is Edelfisch Allerlei (assorted seafood) in liaison with lemon risotto 15. My dining companion went traditional, he ordered Sauerbraten: red wine marinated beef in sweet and sour sauce, potato dumpling, apple compote 19 for his entree and loved it. The service and attention is excellent. At the end of your meal, try the espresso. It is presented and served old world style. the attention to detail is exquisite. We always leave happy!"

"Service was great. Space is interesting, has a European bistro feel and slightly more upscale because of the white linens and artwork. We enjoyed the latter. Food was good to very good. The liver was prepared to perfection but a second entry, veal, was too subtle for my palate."

"Affare has received outstanding reviews so my expectations were very high. The space is comfortable and inviting, and the server and owner (I presume) were very accommodating of my food restrictions. Both items that I ordered were excellent, but I must say for $15 I would expect more than ONE scallop to be served as my "entree." Even as a "small plate" this seemed terribly chintzy as I have eaten at several other local restaurants that serve smaller portions, but provide much more value for the money. My friend's choices were both so-so and I would say, disappointing. The menu is large and I was tempted by many other items so I will return. I hope the next visit will be more satisfying."

"Overall fantastic food and good service. Perhaps this was a 'german' style of risotto that I was unfamiliar with, but it was not up to standards. That said, we had the edelfisch and rosemary lamb; delicious and succulent. We followed that up with the Apfelstrudel, great ending to an already good night.

It is a small plate format. the small portion size means you can have two courses and even dessert and not be uncomfortable. The service was helpful and attentive, but not intrusive or rushed. "It is key to understand that this is a "tapas" restaurant. This is hard to keep in mind because they serve German food. The meal was okay, maybe a little over priced for tapas/ such small portions. The veal loin at around $20 was litterally one slice about 1/4 inch thick of veal. My husband and I prefer small portions, but for the price I would prefer a more reasonable portion. The deserts were excellent. The quark cheese cake was delightful and worth the price and maybe the entire visit."

"Great small plate offerings & I enjoyed the chef's new inspiration in making brats. They were really good, but did lack a little creativity. The curry was my favorite, the beef/pork smoked version was my partner's. The pork/onion lacked onions and the elk/cranberry lacked cranberries. Decent prices too. Service was a little lackluster and didn't seem very excited to be working that evening. Drinks were strong and that was a bonus to the experience. We'll come back though to keep trying the various small plates."

"It was probably an unfortunate evening to visit there, as they were having a $150 a person dinner (SRO) in another room. So, the service in the main dining room was much lacking. we had to remind the waiter twice about a glass of wine, and water glasses were not replenished without repeated requests. The brats, which we ordered as appetizer, were quite good, the mustard authentically German, but the plates are small, and for $20 there should be more than 4-5 bites."

"Small plate menu, however, small plates are very small and pricy for some of the dishes. ($15 for one scallop and foie gras).
We did look at the menu online prior to our reservation, and planned on ordering several items and sharing them so that we could taste as many creations as possible.
This was our second visit, the first being New Year's Eve with a prix fixe menu that was better than our recent visit on Saturday evening. We felt it was a better value at $100 per person plus a bottle of wine, while still allowing a variety of dishes to sample.
We ordered a bottle of wine each time. The wine selection was sparse. In spite of consulting with two of the sommelier's this visit, we were unimpressed with the recommendation."

"I wanted to like Affare more than I actually did. My husband and I each had four courses, and while there were some bright spots (the German snail soup, a roasted red pepper and crab salad) there were also some low points (two inadequate, small triangles of thin, floppy bread served to "sop" up mussels broth, tough and fatty bison short rib). Our largest complaint has to be with the service - our waiter was not versed on the menu and most annoyingly cleared plates while we were still eating (a major pet peeve).
For the prices, and the accolades, Affare just didn't deliver as I hoped."

"I dined at Affare for the first time with my boyfriend's family for an early dinner. For a Saturday evening, they were relatively empty thankfully and we were seated promtly. The interior of the restaurant is a little cold and industrial compared to what I would have matched up with German fare, but the local artwork on the walls proved quite beautiful.Our server, Ryan, was fantastic; very knowledgeable and helpful with the eccentric menu. The food was phenomenal! I would suggest the Beet and Goat Cheese salad and you MUST have the Lemon Risotto- I scraped my plate on that one. My other guests had the Mimosa salad and the Ravioli (small plate) that were both devoured. I will definitely return; this gem is perfect for a nice night out!"

"Very good food but service left much to be desired. First round of cocktails and first round of small plates brought to table in reasonable period of time. However, took forever (30+ minutes) for waiter to come back to get orders for second or third round of small plates and additional cocktails. Took nearly 2-1/2 hrs from time first seated until left. Would definitely have ordered more food had wait staff been more attentive."

"Our dinner for two became an impromtu dinner for four when out-of-town friends happen to be in town for a seminar. I enjoyed their looks of amazement as the food began to arrive from the kitchen. I remember feeling the same way the first time I ate at Affare. The lamb's lettuce with elk sausage paired with powerful Chardonnay set the tone for the subsequent small plates. The composition in each plate is an adventure in flavor.
The decor is an elegant industrial feel. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Service is great because the people are compentent and enjoy what they do."

"Enormous dining room. There were 3 tables sat when we arrived for an 8p reservation for 6. They sat us uncomfortably close to 1 of these occupied tables. Each time 1 of us squeezed in or out of our seat, we had to choose which human was going to have our "junk" in their face. (Move your tables apart. There's nobody here.) My wife & I ordered 3 of their small plates, at which time the waiter asked if I was hungry. I said, "I am." He then, in a tone not unlike an unhappy car dealer insists on adding the Scotch-guard to my upholstery, suggested that I order another dish. I don't remember if it was to spite him or not, but we didn't order another dish. Or drink. Or dessert. The pickled squash was interesting and tasty."

"Food and service were excellent. If you order from the traditionl fare menu, don't let the waiter talk you into ordering more than one entree. Those "small plates" were more than adequate for a meal. We will go back, but not until it warms up, we ate with our coats on, decor is stark and not particularly inviting unless you really like that kind of interior. We prefer wood and warmth."

"The food was excellent. My only slight disappointment was to see that a price fix menu was the only option for participating in the JJ's donation the night we went. Since it was our first time, I looked at the menu online was very excited to try a number of the dishes. The dishes on the price fix menu were excellent but wouldn't necessarily have been my first choice if we had gone on a night not supporting JJ's. We'll just need to make another reservation to try the other menu items. =)"

"We are delighted to discover this German food restaurant. The ambiance was big city chic. Love the artwork. The food was delicious and quite filling with generous portions of traditional fare. The seafood risotto was fabulous! It is close to the Kauffman Center and our server made sure we had plenty of time to get to our performance. We will definitely come again!"

"We've dined here several times now and have always enjoyed great food. The service staff is knowledgeable and helpful, which adds to the overall experience. Victor was our server this last time and we enjoyed his familiarity and knowledge of fine wines. Affare has quickly become a top favorite for us in KC. "We have dined at Affare numerous times and have always had a marvelous time. Maybe because it was Valentines Day but on this visit we were disappointed. We asked for the wine pairing. There was no coordination between the courses and the wines which in every case came after the paired course. We were rushed with course's arriving while we were still eating the previous course. Twice we had to ask for silverware. the only thing that was timely was our bill. We felt rushed the entire evening."
