The Pickled Heron is passionate about promoting local and seasonal products, staying in touch with the farms and farmers that supply us and producing artisanal breads and charcuterie to enhance the dining experience.
"This cute little byob has great potential. The dishes are imaginative, but sometimes just miss the mark. Ordered the steak, but it was in need of a little salt. It was cooked beautifully, but was very bland and had no taste. Loved the sweet potato biscuit that came with the steak, and even paid for some to take home. When I tried them the next morning, I was very disappointed to find that the biscuits tasted half-baked, extremely dense and heavy in texture and sooo salty that they were inedible! They didn't even LOOK like the same thing I had the night before! Had to throw them out after one bite.
The tables are placed a little close, so don't plan on having any type of private conversations. Service was friendly and efficient."

"I went to the Pickled Heron for Mother's Day brunch with no idea what to expect, and it was wonderful. Parking was easy, and the inside of the restaurant itself is beautiful, bright yellow and inviting. We were seated right away and throughout the meal, the service was timely and friendly. I had the duck confit eggs benedict and it was delicious, specifically the house made english muffin. Another member of the party had the lobster roll, which was made with too much tarragon, it was hard to taste the lobster. The French press coffee was delicious and the homemade jam served with bread was wonderful as well. Overall, I'd definitely go back."

"I have been here a few times- and I have never had anything that wasn't phenomenal. As someone who is fortunate enough to dine out frequently, and live in a "food city", the Pickled Heron is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I love the local and seasonal choices, and the chefs are amazing at coming up with new spins on classic dishes. The revolving menu means that there are always different menu items, and they never disappoint! Everyone I have ever brought here raves about the food! The local art on the walls (changed monthly, maybe?) is just another facet to remind the customer that this is a place that is invested in the here & now, keeping in line with their menu. BYO & cash only (worth mentioning, but no big deal)"

"What a great neighborhood gem! And if it weren't for Open Table....we wouldn't have found this wonderful place. The food is astounding! Keep up the good work. We will be back!"

"My Crispy duck done medium rare was superb and My partner raved about her mint ravioli. Pleasant staff and interesting art displayed on the walls. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant on the East Kensington side of Frankford Avenue!"

"We like this little restaurant. But the food is uneven. There are bursts of brilliance and moments of disaster. The menu is small and the selections offer variety. Service is charming, efficient and caring."

"The room is pretty and the food fantastic. Service was good too. Large portions -- but hard to resist eating everything. Delicious scallops, bavette (cooked perfectly), duck breast - great salad -- charcuterie is always excellent. A wonderful spot!!"

"We never heard of the restaurant but found it on Open Table. We started off with Cream of Potato soup, a satisfying starter. For dinner I had sirloin of lamb with an interesting. delicious side. The sirloin was cooked precisely as asked for.It was flavorful and came with a wonderful sauce. My wife had a brace of quails with swiss chard and a quinoa stuffing topped with a complementary sauce. She claimed it to be extraordinary. The desserts was well worth the calories. Creme brulee made with a duck egg, was all that one expects but seldom gets when ordering this dish. The opera cake was rich and wonderful. The server was professional and helpful. The cost, a bargain for the quality. Can't wait to go back again."

"The food here is truly outstanding. I have yet to be disappointed; am always thinking "wow! this is the best meal I've had in a while" when dining here. Scallops are divine (and that black rice was awesome!) And thanks for the birthday wishes on my dessert last night! :)"

"Fantastic neighborhood gem right in Fishtown. Been there twice and the food is beyond incredible. First time had the sea scallops- cooked perfectly- and this past Saturday had the beef and it was seriously the best dish I've had in a long time. Dessert, the creme brulee is a dream. If I could have gotten away with licking to bowl clean in public, I would have done it- it was that good. The place is quiet, artsy, fine dining at it's best. Highly recommended!"

"An enjoyable addition to the Fishtown neighborhood. This takes it up a notch from the strength of this neighborhood which is great gastropubs serving up high quality and inventive comfort food with microbrews. We enjoyed the scallops with kale and the vegetable bolognese. The flavors mixed well and the presentation was beautiful. It is high quality food and byob so well worth the trip. Highly recommended."

"Though the place is small, the food is that of larger high style restaurant with prices that are reasonable. The baby green salad with beet chips and pickled carrots is great way to start your meal and any of the entrees are great followups. Its a bit of France in the middle of Fishtown."

"Fabulous restaurant! Wonderful chefs! Beautiful interior! Environment is classy and warm. The food is ooh and aah the whole way. Foie gras, scallops, beef cheeks, pompano, every sauce and side...all delicious and perfectly prepared. Desserts (duck egg creme brulee, three ice creams and much more)are all homemade as is the bread and the out of this world charcuterie! Tremendous amount of work by the husband and wife chefs who received a standing ovation the night we were there. Well deserved! Extra points for great service by Sean and it's a BYOB. GO!!"

"My husband and I made a reservation at The Pickled Heron for a Saturday evening. While on our drive to Philadelphia I noticed on the restaurant website that it was cash only so I called to confirm. The hostess answered and was very short and cold only confirming that yes, they were cash only. Our waitress offered some recommendations and we ordered the charcuterie and the salad for appetizers. Then my husband ordered the duck and I ordered the vegetable bolognese. We ordered the cherry cake for desert. The charcuterie was good, but lacked any other elements on the plate and the pasta was overcooked and soggy. The cake was dry and lacking in flavor. Overall it was not a very good meal and we won't be back."

"i thought the food was pretty good - not fantastic... and it seems like they are reluctant to give out their bread - had to keep nagging them, portions were a bit on the small side, and the big PIA was - cash only - i did not see anything on their menu... and of course no-one there at the restaurant said anything till the bill arrived..."

"We have had several excellent dinners at Picked Heron. Great menu; great presentation; great tastes. A definite keeper! It would be nice if for a modest adjustment in food cost, Pickled Heron would transition to credit cards. This is not a "cash only" neighborhood!"

"Wonderful BYOB restaurant in up and coming Philadelphia neighborhood. Food is excellent. We have dined there a number of times, and all meals have been excellent. We have introduced many of our friends to this restaurant and all have enjoyed dining there. The dining room is small and a little tight so best to go earlier in the evening."

"My husband and I were in Philadelphia for the weekend and stumbled on The Pickled Heron doing advance research for romantic restaurants. Turned out the restaurant is a bit out of town. We took the train there (short ride from center city) and got a ride back from the people eating dinner next to us (they are regulars). The Pickled Heron seems to be that kind of place--destination for people ready for a small adventure. The food was tasty, service friendly, charming atmosphere, tab quite reasonable--helped by BYOB."

"This is a great find and definitely somewhere to take a date for a special occasion, or to take anyone just to impress. Very romantic feel, with a cute table just for two that has a beautiful couch for you to sit side by side on. Friendly staff and attentive service. The sauce with the mussels was wonderful, dinner was delectable and the dessert was fantastic, too."

"Had a romantic V-day dinner here. The scallops were delicious and the venison was perfectly cooked. Had the creme brulee for dessert which was Fing amazing. Made with duck egg. Very rich and creamy at the same time light in texture almost. Highly recommended!"

"This is our third visit, and each time we brought different people along. Everybody loves this place. At first I thought it might be a marketing error to promote the eating of strange pig parts at a BYO; I'm guessing that an ethical vegetarian (as opposed to a health vegetarian) would not feel comfortable eating here, and some people who like game would want a full bar (Caveman want martini and scotch with meat!). We wouldn't bring our vegetarian foodie daughter or niece. But otherwise, delicious food is delicious food, and in a way it is more ethical to use all the parts of any animal we eat, so I hope the word spreads. (And not every dish is unfamiliar, of course.) Favorite: charcuterie, venison, mussels, cherry cake, chocolate terrine."

"Perfect "off the beaten track" restaurant. You could be standing 20 feet from the place and not know it was there. Food and service were great. Coffee and desserts excellent. The menu was limited, but that's OK, the choices all seemed good. Parking is no problem either. Definitely worth a repeat visit as the friendly owner/chef duo said the menu's always changing. Bring a good bottle..."
