Cafe Joul, a French-American bistro, has been a perpetually popular staple in the Sutton Place neighborhood since the year 2000. A convivial, neighborhood atmosphere combined with the high-quality cuisine of chef-owner Bertrand Vernejoul have created a large devoted following.
"The food was pretty good but not worth the almost $70 I spent (including tip) for two people. It did include a choice of mimosa or bellini or similar but all in all, still not worth the money. I ate at Mario Battali's Del Posto last year for lunch and spent only about $20 more but it was fabulous! I don't mind spending the money if the food is really good, but Cafe Joul is not in that category."

"We enjoyed a delicious dinner with out-of-town friends at Cafe Joul. Everyone loved the food, especially the Sea Scallops special. All our dinners were very fresh, cooked perfectly, with great service and the perfect atmosphere to talk and catch up. Wine list had a lot of variety. We definitely will be back!"

"Cafe JOUL was recommended by a 3rd party who lived in this neighborhood. We tried it for the first time several years ago & every time we return we are continually impressed with the quality of food and sweet atmosphere. It truly is a gem."

"We often go to Cafe Joul as a neighborhood restaurant. The food is always good. It would be nice if they altered their menu a little bit more. Service is good and attentative."

"The best neighborhood Resturant around. I've been coming here since they opened and have never had even a mediocre meal. Always delicious. Great choice of wines, and the best burgers in the city. Every special is a winer. The mushroom ravioli is incredible. Perfect choice for brunch. The wait staff and manager always friendly and very knowledgable. A must go. Don't forget to order the cheese plate."

"Cafe Joul is our favorite brunch spot in NYC. The wait staff is always attentive and friendly. The food is reliably delicious. Their brunch, complete with complimentary pastry basket (YUM), is hard to beat. Their fresh-squeezed OJ is delish, especially in a complimentary mimosa! The restaurant is not a 'scene' like so many other popular NYC haunts. It's just a lovely neighborhood gem, never too crowded, with food that never fails to satisfy and delight."

"The waitress service was inattentive. Don't bother requesting a steak or another dish rare or medium rare, because the waitress and/or the chef don't pay attention to these requests. The bus person did a fine job, however. He filled our water and brought more bread with a smile. The major problem was that the portions were much too small. After having an appetizer and a main dish each, we still left hungry. For the prices they are charging, they need to feed people with a reasonable amount of food. If is too bad because the food was tasty."

"The food is very good and in the right proportions. I would not mind having a starch as standard inclusion. Service is also very good. While not spacious,it does allow for private conversations."

"I have been taking guests to Cafe Joul for years, as well as dining there myself on occasion. I have always found it a success with guests and a great place to go in the neighborhood. Having Cafe Joul nearby with great food and great service means that I do not have to go far to entertain friends or for an enjoyable dining experience."

"We are regulars who find the food consistently excellent, and the services is always very welcoming, friendly and accomodating. We find it a very comfortable place to have an excellent dinner or brunch, with a nice ambiance. It's equally great for a special occasion or a casual "any time" meal. We look forward to may more meals at Cafe Joul."

"Food was good but not extraordinary. Tasty salads, but entrees and pate were only pleasant. Ambience and noise were very good for conversation, and waitress was delightful."

"First visit to Cafe Joul and enjoyed it very much. We were four people. I had the calves liver, my wife, the steak and our friends both had fish. He had the monk fish and his wife had the salmon. Everything was delicious and prepared as requested. Will definitely return although for us it's a destination restaurant what with our living on the lower east side."

"Cozy little place with a neighborhood feel. Food was outstanding. We had the mussels in saffron cream broth and it was very tasty. I opted for the duck everyone had mentioned in their reviews, and I have to say it was one of the very best duck breast dishes I have ever had.It had a raspberry coulis, and side dishes were pumpkin gnocchi with braised Brussels sprouts - very interesting and delicious combination. My husband very much enjoyed his special of the day monkfish wrapped in bacon. Make sure you save room for the pear tartin for dessert. Yum.
This place was a great find. Kudos to the great wait staff as well."

"Cafe Joul is a favorite of ours . The only reason that I do not go there more often is the tables are really squeezed in. If they had a few less tables the atmosphere would be more enjoyable and I would go back more often. The food is very good. It is very loud when the restaurant is full. They should do something to try and tone down the sounds"

"I came here with my boyfriend on valentines day and The food was very good. However I did not appreciate the 40$ deposit protocol the resturant had, my boyfriend and I were told to pay because the staff thought we would not show up. It was a turn off. Also, the table was quite small for two people."

"We are happy regulars at Cafe Joul, but had never been on a holiday until Valentine's Day this year. As hopping/busy as it was, we found the food & services as truly excellent as always. It's a joy to dine at Cafe Joul--friendly, attentive staff that does not rush diners, and consistently good food."

"Perfect neighborhood Resturant. Incredible brunches. I'm a picky eater, but here everything on the menus is great. The cassoulet is by far the best in the city, not to mention the ravioli and unreal burgers. The wines are well priced. From the hostess thru the waitstaff your at home. Don't forget to order any of their great deserts."
