A brasserie no longer under the domain of the old world British and French empires. It is truly American. Every plate, every meal, every dessert we’ve created is a reflection of the flavors and techniques from across this great land (and abroad) that have given us inspiration. With our own twist. Like the delicious great plains grilled ribeye steak smothered in thinly-sliced potato “frites”. Or our take on buffalo wings -- chicken, blue cheese and sauce stuffed inside crispy pastry straws.

"We are normally fans of City Kitchen but were very disappointed in the Mother's Day brunch. It was very crowded and the buffet was not great. Their set-up for the buffet was confusing and traffic patterns of the guests going to and from table to buffet was haphazard at best. We felt it was overpriced and that they under-delivered."

"They had an extensive buffet for Mother's Day. We sat outside in warm, sunny weather. It was a little too bright, so they brought an umbrella. The service was good and the food was great. I've eaten here many times for lunch, and have always had good food and service."

"The food is truly wonderful and the staff to a great job taking care of you. We had the crab cakes and short ribs for appetizers and loved them. The Smoked NC Trout was incredible. The best thing is that they were able to accommodate our son's food allergies; which are many. Great experience!"

"We had a reservation at City Kitchen for a post-graduation lunch. When I saw that they were having a $35 Mother's Day buffet I called to ask if we would still be able to order off the menu, as we did not want a large meal & had not planned to spend $35 per person for lunch. I was assured the brunch menu would still be available in addition to the buffet. We were seated upstairs, which was difficult for one of our guests, but I thought would be OK since it was just a 1 time trip up the stairs. After another long wait we were told the buffet was the only option. The buffet line was long and crowded, the food offerings were not great, and we felt like we overpaid for what we got. We were not happy with the food, the price, or the service."

"We had the most wonderful Mother's Day brunch seated outside on the beautiful patio. The patio is surrounded by plants of all sorts so you do not even realize the parking lot is across from you. While most of the tables outside were full we did not feel crowded and could still hear each other talk.
The buffet was both visually appealing and absolutely delicious! Initially I was disappointed that there was not an omelet station however the buffet had such a variety of dishes that I never gave the omelet station a second thought. To top it off the desserts were positively amazing and I loved the portions. When noon arrived we were took advantage of the bottomless mimosas. Wonderful ambience, fabulous service and delicious food, excellent!"

"The abbreviated menu didn't offer much for my tastes. The complete dinner menu is impressive but was not available for Mother's day. I've been there for lunch and it was very good. That night, I'm sure due to volume, they were off their game. Food was below par and service was a little frantic and intrusive."

"What used to be Spice Street is now City Kitchen. Many of the menu favorites from Spice Street remain, particularly on their special brunch offerings, which is fine for use. We loved Spice Street, so seeing some of the old favorites offered is a plus. The restaurant is still quite noisy, but tolerable. All-in-all a good eatery and particularly good for large groups."

"Upon arrival, the inside table, which I requested, wasn't ready, no problem, people were out celebrating with their new grads. Several cocktails at the bar, 45 minute wait and several mannered inquiries as to when our inside table would be ready, all distilled down to having only an outside table available. Ok, go with the flow. The menu was limited to help alleviate backlog in the kitchen. Wrong, we had 6 for dinner, but only 4 entries showed up. One entree finally showed but the final entree entered was AWOL. The flashpoint was reached and the manager was called over. One would think that after a ruined evening they would be more gracious in comping us but that even turned into a haggle session. New Owners/Chef, go back to summer school!"

"There were significant problems with our dining experience
1) It was a very busy weekend with UNC graduation, and as a result the restaurant changed to a very limited menu offering. The restaurant should have informed us of the change in menu when they called to confirm or stated on the website.
2) We were rushed through our dinner courses with the salads/appetizers arriving minutes before the entrees. We could not fit the plates on our table.
3) Most importantly, two in our party of eight ordered sushi that was delivered long after everyone's entrees were finished. When we asked our server where the food was, he notified us that they only had one sushi chef and he couldn't keep up."

"Impressive decor, looks fantastic. Apps were great (ribs and crab cakes) Entree was terrible. I got the Hanger Steak. One end was well done, the other was rare. It was supposed to come with a grain mustard sauce. It came with some red reduction that tasted like overly sweet raisins. The waitress swore this was the right sauce... there's no way. I returned it and got a salad, but everyone else enjoyed their meals. Dessert was ok. With all the options in Durham and Chapel Hill, we'll pick someplace else next time."

"The place has changed names lately, but still has the same owner. The old place had wonderful food as does this one. We really liked everything we got. I was especially impressed with the poached shrimp appetizer. I highly recommend. Service was a bit slow and the credit card machine crashed. The had to search the whole place for the old machine to swipe a piece of paper through to charge credit cards, but things happen."

"There were six for dinner on 4/11 and my husband and I arrived last, inquired about the others in our party, and was told they had not checked in. We were seated inside at a table for six. My husband decided to check out the outside when our party failed to arrive and discovered they had been seated before we arrived!! Our appetizer was cancelled and wine was moved to the outside table. Four of us were satisfied with our food, two were not and service was sketchy.
We have met friends at City Kitchen twice now, and both times the noise was very bothersome, and the food was good but not consistent. The restaurant setting is very lovely.

"Our waitress was very nice, but utterly confused. She had the hardest time getting the drink orders right, at one point pulling a wineglass out of my sister's hand (before she took a sip) and giving it to another person in our party. And then she had to check back twice more before she got my sister's wine order correct. How tough is a glass of house zinfandel?! I received the wrong entree, and while she was quick to replace it, the steak on my steak salad was a little cold. And then she forgot to remove the wrong entree from my bill. Like I was about to pay $54 for a salad and a cocktail! I think I just wasn't in the mood for the hassle after a long day at work and a long drive to the restaurant. Not sure I'll go back..."

"City Kitchen is usually much better than the experience we had on this last visit. Our waiter was rarely present, and seemed to be all over the place. Perhaps they were short of staff. It took well over an hour to be served our main courses from the time we were able to order them, and we had no starters. It also took forever for the waiter to come by to ask for our drink order and then again to return with them, and another long time for him to return to take our food order. We enjoy a leisurely dinner, but this one topped out at about 3 hours, a little long for City Kitchen."

"First and foremost, let me say that our waiter, Miguel, was phenomenal and was an integral part to our positive dining experience. He was incredibly attentive and made very regular visits to out table to refill drinks and inquire about our satisfaction, even though it was evident that he was also very busy. In regards to the food, the buffet was more expensive than your average buffet ($30), but they had something for everyone. The best part about their food offerings is that almost all of them were healthy and made with real ingredients. This was truly a buffet that you won't feel guilty about indulging in."

"Unfortunately this was a poor night which started with being seated 30 minutes after our reservation and waiting 15 minutes to give a drink order from there it went down hill.The waiter tried his hardest to deal with the kitchen problems and was very apologetic offering a desert to deal with an unacceptable situation. We remained cordial and did not take him up on his offer out of concern that he could get docked (we had a few waitresses in the group).. Our experienced hostesses and waitresses noted that they were understaffed and the kitchen a bit unorganized."

"Very attractive surroundings and VERY good food. A bit noisy for my taste, but a lot of people like that racket. Server was sensitive and friendly. We all ate appetizers for dinner, and they were all delicious. I'm a little old for the sports bar scene, but this was more pleasant than most. Try it! Most folks will like it!!!"
