"1789 was the best dining experience we had in a very long time. The food was terrific, the service even better. The manager even surprised us with a special dessert that wasn't on the menu.
I also love the ambiance, it's like walking into a time machine.

"1789 is a venerable DC institution. The service is impeccable and the ambience is unusual: an old-fashioned tavern air, small dining rooms, walls covered with pictures. The place is really for a special occaision, though, because the prices are fairly high for the level of cuisine, IMHO. ."

"Because the Smithsonian symposium at the French Embassy that we attended got out early, we arrived at 1789 a full hour before our reservation at the 6 PM opening time. One of the staff took pity on us -- or didn't want us sitting on the wall outside the restaurant -- and invited us into the bar ahead of opening.
Perhaps affected by the double tequila she got at the bar, my girlfriend revealed that we were there celebrating her 63rd birthday -- although over the years she's threatened me with various dire punishments if I disclosed such facts. Fortunately, 1789 merely provided her with a small complimentary dessert, a card, and a copy of the day's menu as a souvenir. No chorus of servers singing "Happy Birthday"."

"I and a friend were celebrating mutual birthdays and were so pleasantly surprised when we received birthday cards from the staff, in addition to the candles on our desserts. We were there for the summer promotion dinner which is an excellent option.
My only suggestion re the food is, to simplify. So many restaurants feel that multiple ingredients have to be combined to be stylish; this takes away from the essence of the basic excellence of the fish, meat, whatever. And often the ingredients are really not compatible."

"The service in this restaurant is superb. Our party had the gulf snapper, ribeye and lamb shoulder - all good but the steak which we shared a bit because of its large size, was judged best. The cheese plate made for an excellent starter but the disappointment came at the end of the meal. We all had small scoops of ice cream that seemed like it was old and perhaps re-frozen with ice in the mix.

"1789 never fails to live up to it's reputation as one of DC's finest restaurants. From the moment we arrived until we walked out the door, we were treated like royalty. "We recently celebrated my fiancé's birthday at 1789 and had a fantastic evening. The restaurant is situated in an old stone house with small dining rooms on different levels, creating a lovely private feeling. Decorated with antiques and paintings, the dining rooms are beautiful. The food was great (we both had the Halibut) and the service was friendly and efficient. It was expensive, but worth it for a special occasion."

"This was one of the finest dining experiences I've had in quite some time. From the moment we set foot in the restaurant until we left, the staff was professional, welcoming and extremely polite, but not the least bit stuffy. Our meal, from start to finish, was outlandishly delicious. The atmosphere was quiet and charming-even though our table was in the middle of a full room, we felt we were the only ones there. "1789 is almost a throwback to quietness, discretion,and the highest standards for food and service. This is a relatively short, "American" menu. But the food preparation and the service excel. These people don't bother you; they pay attention to you. All of this makes for a very exceptional evening. It comes at a price, but it is worth it all."

"Most selections are quite inspired, but some ingredients are too much of a melange, that is, not always complimentary. The scallop entrée (first course) was wonderful, perfectly cooked. The snapper arrived absolutely steaming, and continued to steam - not ideal for fish, unless you like it overcooked; accompaniments were interesting, but not great; sauce could have been more ample. The main course lamb leg was exceptional. Ice cream and sorbets were wonderful, but did not try the (again) odd pairing of chocolate mousse with banana & lime. Splurged on some celebratory champagne by the glass ($19 per) which contributed to our bill for 3 at $290. Considering the name, would like just a touch more French influence."

"My wife and I made a reservation for Mothers Day and I was happy we chose 1789. The restaurant is dressy and very nice inside. The gas lights, quiet atmosphere and excellent staff made the moment relaxing. I would return in a minute and in fact when back next year we plan to return."

"We had a wonderful dinner at 1789. Even though it was a Monday night, the restaurant was completely filled - and with good reason. "We went to 1789 whilst visiting the USA for my wifes birthday and they made a huge effort to make the evening special for her, even going to the trouble of producing a special menu for her with happy birthday message on it.
The food aqnd ambiance were both superb and it is situated in such a lovely part of DC.
