"This is a great little restaurant right across from the Detroit Opera House. We have been here a number of times and now it is our favorite place to eat when coming up from Toledo to see a show! We have had many of the items on the menu and everything is fabulous! We always have a hard time trying to narrow down our selections. Some of our favorites are the fish tacos, the sweet potato fries, and the to die for turkey burger sliders!! Go, go, go....you will not be disappointed!"

"Only problem was our table was 1 foot away from the table next to us because they had split a table for 4 people into 2 seperate tables and the hostess did not move us or move the table further from other couple when asked. The server did ask us if we wanted to move to have more space. The food and service was good other than that."

"They were out of the wine we usually order, the maurice salad was not julienne but chunks and the dressing was weak at best. Seared tuna was ice cold. Just not the place we used to look forward to eating ..... The staff is great and very accomodating."

"Great location across the street from the opra house (also near parking and both baseball and football stadiums), excellent food, good wine list. The place is small, so popular that tables are very close together and the noise level very high. Staff are friendly and knowledgable but have a hard time providing prompt service prior to nearby events. Allowing one hour is not enough, even for an event across the street."

"When it first opened, Small Plates was a charming, off-the-beaten path tapas restaurant in a city new to that dining experience. A decade later it's but another of the Detroit's many bistros, trying to survive in an economy that's always about to be on the upswing. From the moment we walked in to the not particularly well-done graffiti murals, we knew we'd be swimming upstream - and we were. The food was average at best and our server, while pleasant, couldn't answer any questions we asked about the menu. Our Caprese salad had water-logged mozzarella, mealy tomatoes and some unknown white sauce. My tomato bisque was a creamier, saltier Spaghetti-O sauce and the fish tacos were fine, but no better than a taco truck's at twice the price."

"We stopped in for dinner before a performance at the Detroit Opera House. Had never been there before and were very pleased. We both ordered two small plates and that was more than adequate for our meal. On nights of performances it is suggested to make reservations as the place was packed and there was no seating for walk-ins for over an hour."

"The service was great. My server was knowledgeable, attentive, and just friendly enough without being over-the-top. However, the management needs to hire more servers. It seemed like there was only 3 servers taking care of the whole restaurant. Two of my guests had Cosmopolitans, and another had the Detroit Martini - all of which were great, but incredibly over-priced. Overall, the food was pretty good. While the Lotus Flower Tuna was beautiful, and the Tenderloin Medallions were delicious, - the Pretzel Sliders were a bit dry. All in all, it was a decent experience that I would probably visit again, but only for a special occasion."

"I found the food to be really tasty. The portions are just right. However the service staff attempted to be on top of things, but seemed overwhelmed with the crowd. My party of 4 were headed to the Opera House and the food was delayed. One person had to scarf down their dinner. Fortunately the manager was very kind and did not charge us for one dinners."

"Overall food & service was good. The tuna was abit over cooked (I like it rare). Scallops were cooked great but under seasoned. Sweat potato fries were excellent. The trio beef sliders were very good. The keylime pie was very good. Love the small plates and trying a bunch of items. The prices didn't seeam high for each item but since the portion size was small we need to order 3 per person and the bill added up quickly. Dining room is small so I'm glad we had a reservation before walking across the street for the Opera House show, many were turned away without reservations. Also Draft beer was $7 (a few good local brews) which is on the high side. Finally, food arrives at the table as its cooked and not all at once."

"I was disappointed in the food. Very small portions, I realize "fine" dining is not like family dining but this was really miniscule and I didn't even realize I was eating tuna....I thought it was chicken. The meal was tasteless. My friend commented on the small plates & now I know why. My meal was $13 and if I had seen the food first I wouldn't have chosen it....it was probably worth no more than $4. If you had also served soup or a salad that would have helped. I had something with tuna and tiny bits of mango and avocado. Don't look for me at Small Plates again."

"So convienient to theatre events, as it is directly across from the Detroit Opera House. Great food and drinks. Many choices, and all small enough to try at least two items. Only caveat: place is VERY small. Tables are squashed together and there is hardly space for the server to move. But I do recommend it highly, particularly for adults and older kids. Wide-ranging menu makes me want to go again to try more items. Prices are quite reasonable."

"The best meal I've ever had in my life! We hit traffic and were running late and they held out table longer than they should have. Amazing cute and funny waiter completed the experience. Many times during our meal it came up how we wished people saw this side of Detroit more often. I'm was perfect and a great great great meal. Will be coming back without question!"

"Service was amazing - waiter was attentive to all of our needs. Food selection on the menu was outstanding. I would recommend the Pan Asian Salad, the Chicken and Waffles, and the Detroit Style Coneys. Drinks were reasonably priced. Restaurant is small and the people are packed in so the noise level is high however the food is worth it. Reservations are a must for prime dining times. Would recommend to anyone!"

"Small Plates was the perfect restaurant for per-theatre dining for a performance at the Detroit Opera House. Food was delicious and served quickly. Prices are very reasonable and you cant beat the location as it's right across the street. Would definately return!"

"My husband , myself and our 2 children dined at Small Plates. It was a new and unique dining experience. We ordered five entrees and they arrive when each is prepared. It was a fun, exciting experience . We didn't know which dish would come next. Each entree is small and shared among the table. All of us enjoyed trying different foods. My family loved it!

"I had never been to Small Plates and found it online while searching for a location near the Detroit Opera House. I went for lunch on a Saturday my party was thrilled with the quality of the food, had excellent service and enjoyed the overall ambiance. I'd highly recommend the dragon shrimp, sea scallops, and tuna wontons. I don't know if they do this, but the space could be great to rent out for a private party."
