"Servers remove plates before all at table are finished. Rustic here means uncomfortable chairs. Food should be better at thes prices. Would only go again if I found myself in the area wishing a quick pasta fix and too lazy to seek out another alternative"

"We were a party of 5 and had a nice evening despite a server who was a little on the crabby side, hence the fair rating for service. They know how to make a really good Negroni and my husband thought the super Tuscan was very good, although the pour was not very generous, Everything we ate was delicious. I recommend the polenta fries, the carciofi alla giudia and the meatbal . The menu needs a simple dish, like spaghetti pomodoro, linguini vongole, aglio e olio etc. - if you're not in the mood for a complicated pasta. I had the tonnarelli alla bolognese, and it was amazing - so good, perfect texture. The pollo al mattone which the waiter said was 1/2 chicken, was a really tiny, itty, bitty, delicious 1/2 chicken. I would go back."

"I went with my wife and 2 friends. Two people ordered a fairly expensive lobster dish. The lobster cam in a heavy broth and was served in its shell.. Both people found it very difficult to navigate, especially since they were served with no lobster utensils. When requested they could only come up with a single lobster fork. another diner's fish dish was not at all what was expected. Menu made it sound like a fish dish, but it was mostly pasta. My dish was the only one that met expectation, Tagliatelle pork ragu. It was good, but nothing that special. We raised this to their attention and they did give us complementary deserts and coffee. A nice gesture but I wish it was not warranted in the first place."

"Excellent find for Chelsea Mkt area... as all pastas fresh and inventively presented. GETS NOISY after 7p! Salads as starters very good. And some of the pastas are so good, we have not ever moved to major entrees (have eaten here 3 times). The starter appetizers are unusual --- a couple superb, one or two so-so.

"Celebrating my mom's birthday here was pretty fun. If you like white carbohydrates and cheese, this place is for you! I enjoyed the appetizers the most: Mom and I shared crostini, which came with a paté trio and olive oil and all were delicious; our other appetizer, the asparagus puffs, were almost like little yummy pierogies. Our pasta main courses were quite small, but by that time we were getting a little bit fill. Despite it, we shared the passion fruit panna cotta for dessert, which was FANTASTIC!
Overall, I enjoyed myself, but as a vegetarian I felt limited. $120 for two including tip seemed pricey but tolerable."

"I have been a patron and/or guest of Rana numerous times since its opening. My two recent visits (last Friday and Saturday)were disappointing. Most importantly, the quality of the food seems to continue its retreat from its past high quality. Also, the service ranged between 'slack' and indifferent. After its opening there seemed to be a genuine commitment to an above average dining experience...at present, it appears to have lost its focus. Is it content to cater to the ad hoc 'Chelsea Market tourist trade' rather than building a locally based and loyal clientle? I hope that my impressions prove to be incorrect but the warning signs are unmistakable."

"Had a good bottle of wine - that is about all the good I can say. The waiter was mediocre. When asking the waiter for recommendations, he offered up the most expensive on the menu...oh, and the $210 bottle of wine. So he immediately lost a lot of credibility. We took his recommendation of the meat and cheese appetizer...when it arrived, there was no care taken when plating. It was a pile and not arranged...and bland.
We decided to not have dinner there and went to Del Posto."

"The first time I tried Giovanni Rana it was a serendipitous discovery, and I was extremely impressed with the service, ambiance and food. I came back with a group of friends, and the experience was not at all the same, on any level. Service wasn't very good, the food (though I ordered the same) didn't taste the same, and the orange juice tasted funny, despite the fact that it was squeezed fresh and cost $9 for a small glass. I won't be going back."

"I need to clarify the service vote. The waitress and the rest of the table staff was great. What brought the service rating down to a fair was the hostess. I had made a reservation about 45 minutes earlier, when we arrived rather than a greeting we were reprimanded by the hostess. When I said we had a reservation her abrasive response was, 'Guys a suggestion when making a reservation make it at least 20 minutes before, I just got the reservation 10 minutes ago...'. They were busy I get it but a nice 'Hello how are you?' to start off with would have been nice. We also had to wait until after we were done with our appetizer for the wine, The waitress was very apologetic, but between that and host..."

"This is my second visit, and it was as exemplary as the first time. Great wait staff, excellent pasta and wine selection. The quatro formaggi and el Brasato ravioli are absolutely delicious, and the polenta fries with marscapone sauce make for a great appetizer. The care and quality shine through in every aspect of the establishment!!!!"

"Food was excellent, however the service was poor. We were half way through eating our appetizers when our pasta dishes were brought to the table. I told our server that italian food is slow food and should be served that way. He still placed the plates on our table!"

"I love, love, love Giovanni Rana. I eat there often for dinner, and buy the fresh pastas too. At first there wasn't really a brunch menu but now there's a full egg-y brunch menu. As usual, everything was delicious. John, the bartender, is awesome. I'm sorry to see you got rid of your cocktail list. They were very good. Thankfully John can still make me the Amaro cocktail, which is fantastic."

"3 of us split two appetizers, a salad, a pasta, & the dover sole with two sides. After the first few items we wanted our plates switched so I asked for new plates. We were brought 2 new plates (for a table of 3 people). We were never given new utensils and none of the dishes came with serving utensils- not even the dover sole. In my past experience, dover sole is typically served table side. Our server dropped the $76 dover sole bone in on the table and walked away. I had to ask for utensils so we could separate it ourselves. If you expect customers to keep using the same knife & fork then serving utensils should be served with each dish. I will go back to this restaurant once they've had some time to work on their customer service."

"I was there for the 2nd time with a client who didn't know the place and was attracted for the vibrant environment that mixes a lively merchant with a pasta factory. Our waiter is an Italian descendent and was very knowledgeable on describing and recommending the wine and the food. We shared the delicious crostine/crostone suggestion and for the main courses I tried the lasagna with mushroom while my client was marveled by the squid ink linguine. T finish we couldn't resist to the fried chocolate ravioli, amazing mixture of flavor and texture. The wine suggestion of a Sicilian Nero D'Avola was excellent though I would prefer to try different wines by the glass, as it gives more freedom to learn and to properly pair with the different dishes"

"Very noisy, tables are tiny and on top of each other. Not a place to bring a handicapped or sight impaired person. Otherwise fun. Nothing eaten was memorable but neither was it bad. I would give it another shot. Miles above the Olive Garden and Maccaroni Grill but nowhere near a good local italian restaurant."

"We had a great experience at Giovanni Rana Pastificio & Cucina. We arrived on time and our table was available. The attention was excellent and our waitress had the knowledge about every plate we had question. Between appetizer and main course the time was perfect and the busboy was attentive to keep bread, our glass with water and cleaned table. The food was delicious, tasty and the pasta "al dente". It's a place we highly recommend for pleasant informal diner or lunch."
