Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Troy
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.
The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

"Not my first time there and definitely not my last. From personal experience I find that the food (meat) is always better later in the afternoon. It's my second time there for lunch and both times the ribs were a little on the dry side but still very tasty. The pull pork and brisket are my favorite. The wings are a must. The service was great as usual."

"I went to Dino bbq with my family after my graduation and we all loved it. Our waitress was extremely kind, friendly, and attentive despite how crowded the restaurant was. The food was superb and everyone was well fed. As a group of seven we ordered the family style dish and one more meal which was more than enough food for all. Aral of the main dishes and side dishes were amazing in quality. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone."

"our reservation was promptly honored. Our waitress was courteous and helpful. She brought our drinks and took our orders very quickly. The food arrived in no time at all! We each had a different dish, and were all pleased with the quality of our food. The portions were a little too large for us, but we used doggie bags. Our group included one individual with celiac disease. He had difficulty finding an entree that was gluten free, but was satisfied with eating just the pulled prok out of a pulled porksandwich. Dinoaur might want to include some gluten free items to the menu."

"Our first visit to a Dinosaur outside of Syracuse. The food Syracuse Dino quality. Troy Dino is larger and the parking situation is a little better. The view was much better in Troy - we had a table by the river. Best thing about Troy Dino was that you could make a reservation. No waiting on a Friday night!!!"

"We loved the food...chicken and ribs melted in our mouths with that incredible barbecue sauce on top. Sweet potato and coleslaw sides were exceptional...and the cornbread was like eating candy! It was a very busy night so service was slow...waitress forgot to bring soup and wait for drink refills and more napkins (our napkin canister was empty when we got there) was longer than it should have been.
Beware..this place is very noisy with too loud music..a hearing impaired guest (with hearing aids) with us was unable to enjoy the conversation due to the very loud background noise. We had requested a quiet corner when we made the reservation, but none was to be had."

"I requested my usual iced tea with honey. The waitress says 'no honey'. I explained that I am a regular, and they did indeed have honey. She stomped off clearly angry, and returned 10-15minutes later with our drinks. She slammed them on the table and stomped off. We got up and left. I asked to speak to the manager, Percy I think, and told him of the situation. He tried to buy my dinner, I turned that down. I just want good service. Dino needs to work on that; not the first time I had a waitress with attitude there. Teaching opportunity, the managers always seem very nice; they need better training for the wait staff and the new reception person she is so terrible even they complain. We went to the pumpstation great service/waitress."

"We seemed too be secluded with the children's section. We came with our 3 month old. Everyone around us had small children. It seemed too be a 'sit at the back of the bus' kinda deal. I'd rather have it spaced out so we didn't have 10 children screaming immediately near us."

"This upstate New York chain is well known for its biker bar atmosphere and barbecue fare. unfortunately it seems to be a victim if its own success. on a Saturday night the large Troy location was packed. We had a reservation and were seated on time, but it seemed the staff was overwhelmed. Our server got the beer orders mixed up, and our food was lukewarm by the time we got it. rather than being the flavorful, slow cooked barbecue the place its known for, the food was fairly bland, I guess to appeal to a wider audience, which it seems to be doing. I think it would have been better, but still not great, if it had been served warmer.

"The restaurant was very crowded when we arrived - luckily we had reservations. There was a little wait to get to the hostess station, but once there we were seated quickly (though the staff could have been more friendly - I assume it was due to the crowds). Service was swift and food arrived quickly especially considering the crowd. I remember the food bring good, but not overly memorable. Everyone at our table enjoyed the food, but no one said "you need to try this." We were overcharged on our receipt but the restaurant did not fix the error when we brought it up. While it was only a small amount and not a big deal, it left a bad taste in my mouth."

"Delicious bar-b-que find in this part of the country, a must-visit if you are taking kids to RPI! Fantastic BBQ plus amazing homemade side dishes and desserts (mac and cheese, mashed sweet potatoes, cole slaw, cornbread). We loved the ribs and pulled pork. "This place is a great mix of pub and down home Memphis blues cafe all within a mile of RPI.. The only problem is that despite the very good quality ribs, burgers, sides, most items are generously peppered in advance. Caramelized onions, mashed potatoes, veggies, even mac and cheese are peppered. Like salt, you can add, but can't subtract. Other than that, quality is high, prices reasonable and nice hangout on the Hudson River."

"We stopped in for dinner with three young children recently. The waitress was extremely accommodating to the kids' various needs. "I discovered this place has music on Saturday night;nice.
One issue, when I order pulled pork, the last 3 time it arrives ice cold. They let me keep the cold Oder, and brought me some warm meat;but what the heck? Why can't it come warm from the start? Would like to eat it all together.....
Band was pretty good thought, and the day manager Margery? Is excellent!"

"We had a group of 11 celebrating 2 birthdays. The food was great and came out quickly. Our waitress was fast, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. She anticipated our needs before we asked. Great food - great experience."

"The wife and I were looking for a good place to get dinner with our 2 1/2 year old and 10 month old, and we wanted better food than Friendly's and McDonalds, but wanted to go to a place where if our kids made a noise, we wouldn't immediately feel guilty. Dinosaur completely delivered. It was awesome, and well worth the drive for us. The parking lot was a little shaky, so we ended up parking on the street and walking a bit, but that's ok. The staff was great with our kids, and it was just over all a great experience. And my 2 1/2 year old was pumped to go to the Dinosaur Restaurant "GRRR!""

"The ribs were so fatty that I planned on writing or contacting the management to tell you how terrible they were. I would have sent them back but I had already sent back my frozen drink that had no flavor and was like eating snow. We were with another couple whom we had not seen in a while so we at the sides and picked what little edible meat there was off the ribs. My boyfriend absolutely hates fat on any kind of meat and there was so little meat on the ribs that he had to eat something when we got home. The only thing good about the entire experience was the ease in making the reservation on line. I so wish we had ordered chicken or something that we could have enjoyed."

"dinosaur bbq has such great reputation that i went, my first visit, w/ high expectations. it was good, but not outstanding (not even great). the wings were excellent, the rest was ok. the fried green tomatoes had so much breading it was difficult to know what was inside. the sides were starch heavy; the menu was red meat heavy. it was too noisy, esp, since we got there @ 3:00 (that might have been due to the sunday of president's day weekend). i would not give someone a negative recommendation; nor would i give high praise."

"Dinosaur BBQ restaurants in Syracuse and Rochester have a well earned reputation as high quality BBQ. Troy offers that same quality to Albany Capital District, if with a somewhat more sedate, less "biker" atmosphere. Great that there's one in our area. Some of the best BBQ anywhere. Moist ribs, great brisket, pulled pork, really exceptional sides."

"The dinner was great would have given it better review except they lost my credit card from the table to the credit card machine. How that happens I don't know. Manger took care of the meal which was good but still unsure how u loose a card."

"Dinosaur is consistent. Great food. Great service.One thing slightly negative is that an odd number of guests (like 7) will get you a table for six with an extra chair pulled up to the end. The tables are simply too small for the amount of food when they do this.If you havent been to the Dinosaur you are missing out on some fantastic food. Hard to imagine that some of the country's best BBQ comes from NY State."

"Parking was terrible at this facility...we drove around for over 15 minutes looking for parking, and had to finally park a block away. We had reservations a week ahead of time, but still had to wait over a half hour to get in. The waiting area was so crowded, there was hardly room to breath,(which didn't thrill us, and it was LOUD... . Once we got in, the waiter was very pleasant and the food & service was good. All in all, I don't think we'd make the effort of going there again."
