Rasika West End
Rasika, which is derived from Sanskrit meaning "flavors,” is the award-winning modern Indian restaurant owned by Ashok Bajaj. Leading the kitchen is Group Executive Chef Vikram Sunderam, a 2012 nominee for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic from the James Beard Foundation. Rasika has consistently earned four stars in the coveted Dining Guide of The Washington Post, and is in the top tier of Washingtonian magazine’s annual “100 Best.” Esquire magazine named it among the country’s best new restaurants in 2008 and Food & Wine magazine also stated that Rasika is “One of the hottest restaurants in the world.” Rasika showcases authentic Indian fare prepared on the Tawa (griddle), Sigri (open barbeque), as well as Tandoori and regional dishes. The restaurant is also noted for its international wine list, innovative cocktails and intimate, plush dining room. For private dining, Rasika has an exclusive space that can seat up to 16 guests and a semi-private area for up to 28.

"My wife and parents and I had a lovely dinner at the restaurant on Saturday. The food was outstanding, but I wanted to comment specifically on the service. When a delay in the kitchen slowed things down, our server kept us informed and had some wine sent our way. It was much appreciated, and we will be back soon."

"After eating at Rasika a few times, we wanted to try the new location. Very impressive. Outstanding service. Of course the food was amazing. If you haven't had black cod before, you must try it. It's like no other fish. I'd say the best on the planet. And you get treated with it served two different ways on your plate. Both fantastic. Enjoy!"

"I am a fan of Rasika's palat chaat, and I just got another friend to be a fan, too. We both ordered the chicken tikka masala, It was very good but comparable to what I've had at other good Indian restaurants in the area. The sorbet trio -- mango, clementine, and avocado -- was an excellent way to end a very good meal."

"Btl Reisling (Thanks Morgan & Aurie!) Palat Chaat, Lamb "Meat Balls" which were a little gritty/dry, scallops moilee which were delicious, bengali fish curry w/ mahi mahi, cauliflower + peas + onion side which was nice and light, sage/onion naan - mmmmmm. Dessert was a strawberry and pistacio "custard" that had a hint of kifir lime (we think) - great spring finish to a late night dinner which finished at 11PM. Lovely evening for both of us. The decor is really neat and fun. Although we prefer the original location, this is an excellent alternative that is closer."

"By far the best restaurant experience I've had in recent memory. From the moment I walked in through the entire dinner the service, presentation and food were impeccable. The complimentary champagne and desert bookended our fabulous dinner. Try the spinach and Tika missala, you won't be disappointed."

"When a diner in your party leaves a restaurant saying "Didn't you find it a bit expensive?" you know this was not a good experience. We are a group that do not fear cost as long as there is quality. Big foodies who are willing to explore and taste. RWE was too sweet, dry chicken chunks, service that seemed to not want to serve us, impatient, surprisingly, unexpectedly bad experience. Salvageable is the fried spinach, but ask for the yogurt dressing on the side, it is extremely sugary, and the kulfi. We ordered a chicken curry (sorry for not remembering which), with chunks of chicken that were dry, overcooked, clearly not cooked in the sauce. Service seemed all they wanted was to go home."

"I have been to Rasika 4 times. The only time I was disappointed was on May 10, 2013. We seemed to have a difficult time communicating with our waiter. We ordered two tasting menus. The food took FOREVER to arrive and was generally cold. Our reservation was for 9:45pm and the restaurant was no longer full by that time, so I do not understand what the problem was. I was very disappointed.
I am rating Rasika "very good" based on my prior visits. If I was going to base my review only on the May 10 visit, I would rate it only good or even fair."

"Three adults and one child went on Saturday to celibate Mother's Day!

"This was my second time eating at Raskka - the first was total chance when I was down for an NIH study section meeting and I could not wait to come back! The food is amazing- wonderful small plates available for sharing or more substantial entrees if desired. I am hard of hearing and they have wonderful tables that have partial curtains that really reduce the nosie level.

"I have been to Rasika in Penn Quarter, so I knew what to expect, but Rasika West End went above and beyond. Although some of the food was the same, there were new and different items on this menu, like wild mushroom uttapam with beetroot chutney, WOW! Spice levels were right on and the shrimp dishes were also outstanding. Service was outstanding as were the rest of the dishes we ordered. We went after theater and the restaurant was still buzzing. No one rushed us out even though we were there until almost midnight. We loved it and plan to go back again and again."

"Delayed by the inevitable DC traffic, the restaurant graciously honored our reservation though we were 15 minutes late in arriving. The menu had some favorites from Rasika but featured grilled and griddled foods which offered a variety of new things to try. We enjoyed the mushroom uttapam and found the mahi mahi curry delicious! The bebinca is not to be missed. The service was excellent with our server making good suggestions on how to pick among the many tempting dishes."

"All I'm going to say is that my grandmother grew up in India.... and was telling me that it was the best samosa she ever tasted. Uttapam was a bit too oily for my taste, but I certainly couldn't stop eating the beetroot puree on top (almost asked for some to take home...). When it comes to dessert, I wouldn't say the chocolate one is anything special, so if you want to be wowed then you MUST ORDER the Gulab Jamun. Best I've ever had and so refreshing with the cardamom ice cream! Chef knows what he's doing."

"Simply perfect. I took a special young woman here for her birthday dinner. She loved it. We started with a few delicious cocktails, she the Nandita (Fusion Whiskey) and mine the Divya (Beefeater). They were gone quickly. We then ordered a bottle of Grenache, that the sommelier delivered quickly and elegantly. We decided on a Tapas style sampling of the smaller plates. We had 6 and they were all extremely delicious, especially the Palak Chaat, the Scallops, the Duck Narangi Seekh, and the Mango Shrimp. For dessert we shared a glass of Port and the Chai Tiramisu. The Port was great and the Tiramisu was fantastic, the Chai gave it a bit of a ginger snap flavor. The service was outstanding and the decor unique and fun. We'll definitely be back!"

"Ambience: The ambience is quite classy and it is ideal for a romantic date or taking a client out for lunch/dinner.
Food: The food was strictly average according to me. The famed "Palak Chat" felt a bit too oily. The vegetables were cooked well though. But I can recommend a lot of places with much better Indian food.
Dessert: The dessert collection was pretty good though I felt that the strawberries used in Ras Malai felt like they were canned. But otherwise we tried 4 different options and they were all good.
Wine collection: Quite extensive!! They are very helpful in helping you pair your food with their selection."

"Expensive but well worth it for the exquisite flavors and textures. I'm a committed carnivore but even I have to concede the butternut squash samosas were spectacular (so was the lamb biryani). Plus, one of the few top quality restaurants in DC to offer a well-hopped beer. Only one problem -- it's hard to get a reservation!!!"

"I have always really enjoyed the original Rasika (the non-West End location), and I have been there many times. The food that I had from Rasika West End tasted pretty much the same as the original Rasika (probably the best compliment I can make). The West End location has a more fancy/upscale decor whereas the original Rasika has a more or a cozy feel to it."

"All of us agreed that the food was outstanding, as was the service. We also agreed that this was one of the best meals (top 5) any one of us had ever had, and we're all foodies who pride ourselves on outdoing one another in finding great restaurants (and have made a point of going to The French Laundry, e.g.). FABULOUS!!! Oh, and the restaurant had to accommodate a very late arrival (plane delays) and did so with grace. . . ."
