IN 1983, Karl & Ursula Selinger of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany in the Rhineland Pfalz opened The Old Stein Inn to serve the finest German cuisine. They decided to locate in Anne Arundel County just 8 miles south of Annapolis in Edgewater Maryland. The Old Stein has a traditional Biergarten to give neighbors a place to enjoy al fresco dining with friends and family. The ten German taps pour an unparalleled selection of beer. The Old Stein has been featured on "The Best Of Show" on the Food Network and has won multiple awards for the Munster Cheese & Crab Soup and the Apple Cheesecake.
The Old Stein is no run-of-the-mill chain restaurant. Diners come from all over the Mid-Atlantic (or right around the corner) to this family-owned, Maryland gem to enjoy fun, food, friends—and, or course, a cold brew in a gemütlichkeit atmosphere. Eins, Zwei, Drei, G"suffa!

"We were a bit early for our reservation but were seated immediately, which was nice. We were not told about evening specials, which we heard other servers explaining. The German standards we expected were disappointing - the spaetzle and red cabbage were tired and lacked a culinary zing. However, the Sweinhaxe was excellent - flavorful and melted off the dinosaur-sized bone. The meat platter appetizer was interesting but also just a tad tired. The pretzel with dips was really a highlight. German beers and wines were as advertised. The most disappointing part of the evening was the service, which was rushed. Bus staff were trying to take our plates even as we had lifted forks. There wasn't a crowd, but even still, we felt rushed."

"We were recommended the Old Stein Inn from our friends about a year ago. We regret waiting so long to make a reservation. The food was great with complimenting service. The proportions were exactly the right size and the food has a taste that sets it apart from other restaurants. We will be going back. I would highly recommend."

"First time - wont be last. Grew up eating food prepared German style, especially with cabbage and potatoes. The beer I chose excellent to accompany the food. Dessert (apple cheese cake) wrapped up the great meal. A touch dark after the sun went down perhaps on purpose for ambiance. The casual atmosphere makes it easy to enjoy. Several families were there with children so be prepared to experience such. Definitely will return and enjoy the biergarten once the weather has warmed up a bit."

"Lively restaurant with German music playing in the back round. The accordion player made rounds and got the crowd singing and clapping along with the songs. Food was excellent and authentic German. The beer was outstanding and the staff is uber friendly and willing to explain the menu. Great for parties of six. Eat inside or out in the beer garden when the weather is nice!"

"Good German restaurants are getting few and far betweeen. The Old Stein Inn is one of those few. Since the closing of the Wurzburg Haus all on Muncaster Mill Rd out near Rockville, Old Stein Inn has been my go to for German food. What is especially appreciated is that it is smoker friendly as long as you are ok with being outdoors and in a corner. We got complimented on our choice of cigars and shared them with folks who came over. Finding a place where you can enjoy a good meal, some good drinks, and settle back and have an after-dinner cigar while socializing is a real treat. Only downside: Parking is TIGHT! Wish the lot was bigger, this place is VERY popular."

"Had to wait 5 minutes to be checked in when we got there after standing in the empty waiting area. The hostess greeting was less than welcoming.
Sat at the bar where the staff was slow to serve but friendly and helpful. Although the bar area is small it has great ambiance and a well stocked selection of German beers.
Sat outside where it got a bit cold. There was some family friendly music that was very entertaining and enjoyable to listen to.
Flounder was excellently done and a very nice portion for the price. The goat cheese spinach was a very good mix with a great taste. Crab cheese soup was very good but a bit expensive.
Overall a good experience with great food, although staff was slow to provide service."

"six months ago my husband and I went there and it was so crowded that we couldn't get a seat. This time we made reservations and didn't even need them. It wasn't that busy for a Friday evening. We were very disappointed with the food. It was not at all like it was in the past. We used to think that the food was delicious. We will have to wait for awhile and maybe try again."

"We had been to the Old Stein several times before the fire and were curious about the reconstruction. They did a terrific job of recreating the German gasthaus ambiance. The staff was courteous and friendly. The was fantastic and the beer was so good! On our next trip, we will sit out in the biergarten, it was a tad to chilly this time."

If you remember the old Haussner's in Baltimore, and miss it like I do, you'll love the Old Stein. Not that has the Haussner's artwork. Old Stein is more like a real old country inn, great atmosphere, top notch friendly fun service, and delicious authentic German dishes."

"Great interior, friendly folks. Large menu selection. Waitstaff sensitive to dietary restrictions such as gluten intolerance and vegetarian/vegans. Made suggestions to our table for both to make the the dining experience equally appealing to all parties. Their outdoor beer garden looks festive but it was snowing so we dined indoors."

"In my first visit to Old Stein Inn, I was completely impressed. While the location is a bit small, our reservations were honored the second we walked in, even though the restaurant was already PACKED.
My husband and I ordered the Bier Kase fries as an appetizer. DELICIOUS! The fries were a bit salty, but the smokeyness of the cheese and the sweetness of the dip canceled out any over-saltiness.
For our meals, I got the port schnitzel (perfect size, perfectly fried, delicately seasoned), and my husband got the wurst (great portion, cooked to perfection).
For our wallet, this will be more of a "special occasion" place (also due to the fact that it's an hour drive from Baltimore), but we will DEFINITELY be back again."

"Old Stein has classic German food and a nice selection of German beers on tap. I guess they have it in bottles too but I always go for the draft. They have 9 regulars and the "tenth tap" changes. Try the Franziskaner Hefeweissen. On Sunday, I had the steak and frites to change it up from the German fare (for that - you have to get the pork shank!). The steak is a beef tenderloin. I got it rare and it was so tender and delicious topped with an herb butter. Nice crispy fries and excellent mixed vegetables that were either grilled or sauteed - and quite flavorful. When it warms up, go into the biergarten for a relaxing dinner, German music and, what else, bier!"

"My only complaints:
- the fries were seasoned with something - which while it didn't taste overpoweringly like Old Bay Seasoning, certainly colored the potatoes in an unnatural orange way and did flavor them somehow that was not appealing to me. I was really looking forward to traditional German-style pommes to accompany my meal.
- our beer, while part of an excellent selection, was served almost too cold.

"Very nice German restaurant. The building was replaced about 2.5 years ago due to a fire, but it still has nice ambiance. Good food and great beers. I was only disappointed a bit when our server said we had to be finished w/ our table by 7pm as there was another reservation coming after us. Our reservation was at 530P, but we didn't sit at our table until 6P as our friends were late. However, even if we sat down on time at 530P, only 1.5 hours for dinner/drinks at a great restaurant is a bit quick in my opinion."

"My wife and I enjoyed our meal on Valentines Day. We dined and went directly home to Calvert County. On Friday 15 February, the Chase Fraud Division informed me that someone had engaged in a spending spree with the credit card I used at the Old Stein Inn the evening before. I can't prove that it was an employee; however, my card was not stolen. It was returned to me at the restaurant, and that was the only time the card had been out of my possession in weeks. In my opinion, someone copied my account number and security code before the card was returned. On Thursday evening we had a good meal; on Friday afternoon, I had a bad taste in my mouth."

"Great place for German style food and beer. Went for an early dinner, when we got there it was half full but by the time we were leaving it was completely packed. We had an amazing waitress, I believe her name was Suzie, she explained all the items on the menu to us and had great recommendations on what to order. Huge selection of German beers on draft for pretty reasonable prices, considering they're not your typical beers you find at bars. Overall, we had a great time and have told many of our friends about our experience. We will be coming back for sure."

"Third visit. All three times very impressed. We brought another couple with us and they loved it too. We could not stop talking about it. We had appetizer, main course and dessert. There is quite a beer selection. Can't wait until the beer garden opens when the weather gets warmer. This is going to be a regular stop for us."

"The Old Stein consistently serves up delicious, authentic German cuisine. The menu rotates with the seasons, and the Autumn wild game menus is not to be missed! They have a broad beer menu. Seating is German-style. There is a children's menu, but this restaurant is not to be confused with other eateries who have a clown for a mascot.
Outdoor dining in the warmer months provides a very pleasant atmosphere. The restaurant is located near the end of Central Avenue, and the outdoor eating area is surrounded by a high fence, so traffic noise is almost nil.
Old Stein is a best-kept secret!"
