Pamplemousse Grille offers upscale French Continental Cuisine featuring grilled seafood, meats, game and daily specials. With his first restaurant, Pamplemousse Grille, Strauss makes a personal statement on the pleasurable dining experience -casual yet elegant, inspired yet straightforward, quality food that delights all the senses.
"We celebrated the Birthdays of two members of our party. The restaurant has a impressive menu. We enjoyed the fresh halibut and also the duck entrées. The wine list was extensive and the Sommelier a helped us pick out the perfect wine. The entrées and food are expensive but worth it. It's a great place to celebrate special occasions. Recommend jackets for men and formal dress for women. Not a place for young children."

"It's unusual for us to visit a restaurant like this so it was a real treat. Not that we haven't before. Our servers were engaging and friendly but allowed us to follow our own schedule. We were impressed with the specials of the day and opted to try a couple of them. The food was exquisitely prepared and presented. Everything we had was absolutely top notch. We are very value conscious when it comes to wine and we selected a lower priced wine that exceeded our expectations. All in all, we were after an extraordinary dining experience which we most certainly had and left with a strong desire to revisit Pamplemousse and recommend it. The decor is elegant but relaxed. The art interestingly whimsical fitting the Southern California culture."

"As always Pamplemousse is such a great place to dine. I love coming here to eat and I wish I could afford it to eat here more often but when I do get the chance I love eating here. The food is a work of art and cher Jeffrey Strauss is amazing. Perfect mix of beaty taste without compromising one over the other. I can't wait to come back here again."

"Pamplemousse is below expectations for all the high-graded reviews. Everything was satisfactory, but not exceptional. We thought we were in for a "foodie" experience when we ordered the black truffle menu, a preset 5-course menu with black truffle shaved at our table. In past experiences at other locations, this type of menu has all the restaurants' finest dishes. It was a $185 per person disappointment for us. The wine list is extensive and their sommelier was politely helpful; however, he was obviously not impressed with our casual clothing and moved on as quickly as he could. Kudos to our server, Shane C., and the nameless expediters who were comfortably professional and extremely attentive without being snooty."

"The smoked fish appetizer was to die for! Everything else was ok. Mixed grill duck was chewy and the new york steak nothing to write home about. The latter was overpriced for the dish although the helpings were large. The appetizer and our server made the dinner a 4. Otherwise, I would have dropped to 3."

"Menu is diverse and creative. Portions are relatively large so it's easy to over order. Food is incredible...everything from truffled burger and fries to ahi lollipops. Wine list is very extensive for medium to high (don't care about $) budgets"

"Always fantastic! The Hamachi and Tuna Tartare and Lobster Salad are truly some of the very best starters in San Diego restaurants and are perfectly executed every time. We are very frequent visitors but never tire of the menu choices as they revolve enough to present a large number of excellent choices. Very rare to find a restaurant that can be the family favorite, but also be the go-to choice for executing an important business function."

"My husband and I live in Geneva and are used to eating well in France. As a result we tend to be snobbish about food, but were delighted with our overall experience at Pamplemousse Grille. Our attentive and pleasant waiter Worthington provided excellent food and wine recommendations and superb service. The black truffle fries are terrific. My husband was disappointed by his pink abalone, but everything else (bread, vegetables, French Burgundy and California (Turley) wines, fish, mixed game platter, tart tartan) was excellent. Flavors were subtle and complex.
I loved the decor and was especially pleased by the calm environment and separation of tables that made it possible to eat and carry on a conversation at the same time."

"We had not been to Pamplemousse in several years, but are glad we went this time. The Cajun fried oysters were extraordinary, a generous portion of the plumpest oysters that I've ever had. My wife's beet salad was also wonderful. My aged steak was perfectly done and my wife's scallops were succulent and sweet. We simply did not have room for dessert, but I've no doubt that would have top-notch as well. Tough to beat this meal and Pamplemousse certainly deserves its' place as one if the best in the San Diego area."

"With its not-inconsiderable prices, I was ready to pounce on anything Pamplemousse did poorly -- and you know what? Everything was fantastic. The service was great. The food was phenomenal. We had more than a dozen amazing sounding specials to choose from -- enough that I didn't even really look at the printed menu. A wonderful experience all around."

"I wasn't super impressed with the food during restaurant week. It was ok, but not worth the prices they are charging on the regular menu. My friend tried the "lobster sandwich" addition to the restaurant week menu which was $40 extra on top of the $40 he was already paying for his meal - all for a grilled cheese on what appeared to be supermarket style sandwich bread with a few tiny pieces of lobster in it. Not good. Very mediocre. After trying this restaurant 3 times, I don't think we will be back. The food isn't bad - but it's just not good enough to be charging what they are charging. Service was good, though. The wine list is a bit ridiculous and over the top. Very few selections under $60."

"The dishes are creative, with high-quality ingredients. The desserts are a real high point. Extensive wine list with special and pricy offerings, but also some specials at more attractive pricing. No sakes available. My biggest issue is that the menu items are 20-30% overpriced for this venue. The high pricing for courses has been ongoing for many years. I guess the old-money clientele don't really flinch, but beware if you're on a budget. Best to try during SD restaurant week, although it will likely be mobbed then."

"Food was magnificent. The wine list was large. We appreciated the pages of wines for uner $60 and last call wines (wines on special price). Our service was attentive. We all left with large smiles on our face."

"the food was unimaginative, heavy and had no interesting flavor. The caramel cake desert was just one of those very popular but ordinary so called "lava cake" and was very disappointing. If restaurant week is supposed to be an introductory test into going back, it failed to retain my enthusiasm and attention for this restaurant. I had been looking to going there for a while and though i did not tell my dining companion, it was a disappointing experience"

"What an incredible dining experience. I can compare this to none other. It is by far my favorite restaurant in San Diego and one of the best in the world in my opinion. Get the Gnocci (it is worth the money). I also highly recommend it for restaurant week."

"Enjoyed another outstanding meal here during SD Restaurant Week in January 2013. Food, quality and service are a can't miss here. Nice menu selections for our three course prix fixe meal. Really appreciate the continued participation of Pampelmouse Grill for SD Restaurant Week."

"Food was great, but be prepared for over the top rich food. After the 3 courses (for Restaurant Week), I was so full I was in physical pain primarily because of the richness of the food. I had the Lobster Ravioli (scrumptous), duck (yummy), and chocolate lava cake (decadent). I will definitely return to Pamplemousse, but limit the amount of food I consume."

"Food is very good. Cocktails expertly mixed. Service was helpful, friendly and prompt. The freestanding tables (in the middle of the aisle) give a feeling of.... sitting in the middle of the aisle. Which you are! Ask for a booth or table that is against a wall. Soft lighting is nice. Though I would like to see the decor updated."

"I am a returning customer and dined during the second week of restaurant week. I ordered from the prix fixe menu and selected the roasted beet salad, the surf and turf which was comprised of filet of beef and smoked prawns and the warm chocolate caramel cake. My prawns were overcooked but the rest of the meal was perfection. The service is spot on, just the right amount of attention. The restaurant has a great vibe and I love the touch of the dessert station near the hostess stand. A favorite place!"

"Service was friendly, helpful with food choices, and attentive enough. Went for Restaurant Week and the food was excellent. The duck and the filet/short rib agnolotti were both excellent. My only complaint would be the high prices on wine by the glass, but that seems to be the trend. Pamplemousse Grille is a gem in North County coastal and never disappoints."
