PRIMA is a modern italian/american restaurant that also featured kiawe wood fired brick oven pizzas. While using fresh local meats and produce , PRIMA"s menu consists of many different flavors that customers can experience through share plate style eating. Menu is subject to changes due to local seasonal availability of products.
PRIMA's thin crust pizzas are hand crafted & cooked in a STEFANO FERRARA oven using local kiawe wood.
The kitchen counter & bar consist of recycled mahogany & stainless steel, while the rest of PRIMA's interior features natural wood tables, comfortable Eames chairs, and recycled wood benches.
"Great neighborhood eatery. Plate sharing is the recommended dining. Love the grilled squid, although prefer the previous preparation. Pizzas and pastas are great. Service and wine recommendations are always on point."

"The food was really outstanding. However, there were zero options for kids. I understand that this is the risk we take when bringing our son with us, but he is an adventurous eater (his favorite thing there were the clams), but he didn't even like the "plain" pizza we ordered for him. This place also seems to think it makes a good pizza as they break things down between "pizza" and "not pizza" but that was definitley the least good thing we ate. The papardelle was ridiculously good, the clams were perhaps the best I have had anywhere in Hawaii...but maybe include a few pieces of bread with this dish? Although we did order the side of bread and it was delicious as well."

"The food is always excellent. I love the new menu, especially the lamb -- I think it's my new fave. Service is always pleasant and friendly, but absent at times. Not a huge deal. I'm such a fan of this place that I don't think service makes too much of a big deal. I will be back for sure."

"The mushrooms and brussel sprouts were amazing! The pizza was good, but not as good as JJ's or my homemade.
It's a good thing we made reservations because they were really busy! This slowed down service a little too much, but the dining area had a nice feel so it wasn't a chore to wait.
I would definitely come back, but probably early in the week to avoid the crowd."

"Our first time visit was worth the 20 minute drive from town to Kailua. The tasteful oyster mushroom is the highlight on the pea-risotto. One of the specials was grass-fed kaiwi steak sirloin strip - one the best steaks we've had in Honolulu, perfectly done, and although not necessary, the home-made steak sauce was delicious. We were not planning on order dessert as the portions for the two of us was substantial, but we overhead that the banana hazelnut log with sorbet was amazing. Our only regret was we only ordered one, we're going to order two the next time. As busy as this tiny restaurant was that night, our waiter Keenan was very attentive and kept us updated on our orders and to make sure everything was good. 5 star service"

"The restaurant is changing into a pricey pizza place. An already short wine list has been further reduced to 1 sparkling, 1 white, 2 reds, with an increase in the beer selection.Additionally, after spending more than $3,000 on dinners at Prima during 2012 the chef has yet to even acknowledge my presence. I don't want a drum roll when I arrive but a head nod from the chef might be nice. Don't know, maybe all their customers spend $3,000 a year there."

"We went to Prima on Friday evening. Service was awful. Our waitress shouldn't be in the service industry. She forgot to tell us about the specials/soup of the day. She forgot to bring the wine list after my girlfriend requested it to select another glass of wine. Later my gf asked for a refill of our water - our waitress forgot. Then I asked for a water refill - waitress forgot again. We never got a refill of our water bottle. She didn't offer dessert. Also, keep in mind the restaurant was half empty (and I think I understand why) so it's not like she was swamped or overburdened with orders. We also saw another couple visibly frustrated with the service. The food was okay and for the quality everything was over priced."

"tandori pear appetizer was one of the most creative and delicious taste treats I've had in a while and I'm in the food business. Check out our organic O Meyer Lemon olive oil in Kailua Whole Foods - you guys could make magic with it! Seriously, I eat out a lot in NYC, Portland, DC & live in the Bay Area. Prima was suprem -a ! Still talking about the grilled romaine salad's smoky wonderfulness ! Curry bolognesa - yes please ! We came in with my daughter, Kai, who works in Waimanalo at Green Rows Farm - organic kale growers & seriously amazing compost fed/organic farm eggs. Keep up the creative great work / can't wait to come back to Kailua and visit you guys, again. Greg Hinson / founder of O Olive Oil, Petaluma, CA"

"You know you're going to find a menu with things you don't find elsewhere -- like octopus. It's fun looking at all the possibilities. Prima encourages sharing and that's one of the things that adds to the fun. The mushroom appetizer is a beautiful sculptural art piece and tastes wonderful, too."

"Outstanding ambiance, great food, excellent service. This was the fourth time my wife and I have dined here with friends. The ambiance is a wonderful mix of settled peace and joyous life-giving. Their offerings are so flavorful and diverse that we always eat "family style" with extra plates for sharing. All the servers have been upbeat, interesting, friendly, and helpful."

"This was my first time at Prima.I live in Kailua, but held off going to Prima because of the location in the Foodland shopping center. The inside didn't look inviting with windows looking out onto the parking lot.We were a group of four who shared appetizers, then ordered our own larger plate for our main course. The food was all outstanding and delicious and we enjoyed every dish. The wine list was small with only three reds, but the Sicilian wine was wonderful. The service was very good. Now for the negative, the horrible acoustics inside that will keep me from returning until they move location or change decor with material to absorb the cacophony of cooking vent, music, and people needing to talk loudly to be heard."

"I love this place. Fantastic pizza, pasta, with innovative and outstanding specials. A small and unassuming place that is big on ambiance, service, and of course food. Kind of crazy when you find yourself craving their brussel sprouts and fingerling potatoes(but that's just how good their food is). Prices are very reasonable and service is terrific. The staff makes you feel good just being there (friendly, knowledgeable and attentive). One of the few places we've found on Oahu that makes my entire family want to become regulars."

"Great service and excellent idea for a concept restaurant. However, the food was horrible. I will not be returning nor will I recommend to anyone, too much hype and nothing to back it up."

"We made reservations for 4 and arrived at 6:15. The host asked us if we like to sit outside. There were, at the time, 3 empty tables for four inside the restaurant. The host said that they had multiple other reservations and explained that while no one had arrived yet, they were on the way. Since we were here on time, and tables for four were available inside, we politely asked to sit inside. The head waiter eventually impolitely pointed for us to sit at one of the open tables. Another group did arrive, but one table was open for the entire time. The pizza was burned. The bolognese pasta curry sauce was overcooked and entirely too salty. The halibut special was chewy and very fishy. The service was disinterested at best."

"Waitress forgot to put our order in (pizza and a salad). Wait time for food: 1 hour. After that, we had to ask for everything (water, drinks, etc). For a place that charges a little extra, its staff isn't very well trained in customer service. Sad...I could've seen myself really enjoying this spot, however, you only get one chance at first impressions."

"Even though service is slow or frantic at times, I keep going back for more. I really can't get enough of Prima's brilliant menu (and specials). And the soups are amazingly clever and tasty. How do they do it?! I'm hoping to discover/unveil their secret one day... Lol. On a more serious note, I wish this place was closer to town. Hoping for a Prima 2 some time in the near future. Haha. No, seriously. I am."

"Knowledgeable and responsive wait staff. Excellent food, but limited selections - not really a problem as they publish their menu and diners should have checked it out ahead of time. Facility and decor is high end family, low end fancy. Prices are high end moderate, but no complaints - food and service were well worth it. A bit crowded, but overall quite nice."

"Attentive staff, fantastic food, nice atmostphere, reservation was on time - no waiting given the place was packed. Nice touches: bottled water, mediterranean influenced cuisine and what I would call a roving host who checks on everyone in between visits from the wait staff."

"Prima's food is the most eclectic I've experienced in Hawaii. The flavor combinations, preparation and presentation are quirky and surprising, in a good way. The only strange thing is that Prima promotes a family style, share menu, however the appetizers and salad was difficult to share. The main dishes are easier to share. All in all, it was a great experience and we enjoyed our meal!"

"We actually go here a lot. It's the best pizza. Period. The menu is imaginative and always changing. Most the time the imaginative dishes are outrageously delicious! Its great having a neighborhood joint with a creative chef, who introducea us to new foods and combinations. We had a Mahimahi wellington that was amazing! One of the best restaurants in Kailua!"

"I wish I could give the food more than 5 stars! Excellent. I love the decor inside, was thrown off by the amount of light when I first arrived, the ambiance was strange. The amazing food made me forget my bad first impression, from the appetizer to the pizza to the dessert everything was perfect."

"Great tasting plates, reasonable prices. The server was very knowledgeable about both menu items and their wines. The wine list was not extensive, but seemed to have wines that would pair well with the kinds of foods they serve. I wasn't wild about the plastic chairs and the industrial decor, but it was nice enough. We plan to go again, next time for the pizza and the braised romaine salad."

"We eat at Prima every now and then and have never been disappointed. We took our in-laws and everybody got a great dish. The pizzas are fabulous and the specials are always interesting. One of the specials was broccoli and beef gnocchi: a Korean twist on an Italian classic."
