Bar Toma is an Italian neighborhood pizzeria and bar by Chef Tony Mantuano, featuring 20 varieties of artisan pizza, a mozzarella bar, gelato, an espresso bar and small plates for sharing with Italian beers, aperitivi and 60 wines. Open daily for lunch at 11:30am, stop in for quick salad or Tony's Italian Beef and enjoy an evening with entrees including Grilled Whole Fish and Vegetable Torino. The Italian wine list features several options by the glass, including wines "on tap", and the beverage program is complimented by an assortment of house made bitters and cellos.

"The pizza is really good at Bar Toma, but the service is really weak. The servers rush around busily, but they're never available when you need them, and they don't seem to have time to listen to the orders, so there are a lot of do-overs. They have some exceptionally good gelati, but if you order more than one flavor they get mushed together in a single cup. The weak all-Italian wine list consists of mostly mediocre wines at moderate prices, with a "reserve" list containing some decent wines at high prices. Better to stick with beer."

"Having eaten at Bistro for over 20 years we were interested to see how Tony Mantuano had morphed the famous French spot into an Italian Bistro. While we felt that Bar Toma is not nearly in the same league as Tony's Cafe Spiaggia and Spiaggia or for that matter the Levy owned the previously mentioned Bistro 110 it is a nice spot in an amazing location. The bar where we were seated was packed and loud, service was spotty, the food was good, the clam pizza was very unusual but a bit disappointing in crust consistency , the Adult Fried Cheese, the Mozzarella Trio and the Gelatos were the standouts the dishes we sampled."

"We tried the beet/gorgonzola salad, the fried calamari and one of the Pizza of the Month selections with ramps. The food came out quickly and each dish was delicious. Our waiter was excellent, but got busy and did not offer us a second drink. Otherwise the overall experience was great and we will definitely go again next time we visit Chicago."

"the food is always good here. this time, i had a waiter who was into being friendly, but not necessarily attentive. We had theatre tickets and he acknowledged that - but didn't act on it. Food took a long time, check took a long time and I had to go look for him to pay the tab - and found him eating off left-over plates - GROSS!"

"Needed a quick place before the theater and this fit the bill. Food was good, service was speedy. .Seating is a bit tight and there were lots of families with babies and young kids but of course it was Mother's Day. We split pizza (more than generous for 2) and had salad and an appetizer. Pizza crust was not as crispy as expected, being a thin style. In general, a good alternative to the pricey high end or cheap fast food places in the Mag Mile neighborhood."

"We arrived for lunch just after opening, so perhaps the ovens weren't heated up enough but the pizza crust was thicker and chewier than expected. It was also dry. The server did not inform us of any specials, but 10 minutes later we heard him telling other diners about their specials for the day. The beet & gorgonzola salad and the mint gelato bites dipped in dark chocolate were fabulous and we'd go back just for salad & dessert."

"This was my second dinner at Bar Toma. Both visits have been positive experiences and I would not hesitate to return or recommend it to a friend. The salads are fresh and the pizzas have a wonderful, chewy crust with fresh toppings. Our waitress was knowledgable and attentive. I don't love the atmosphere, but the location is great and the food is always high quality."

"We so loved Bar Toma when it first opened, and had either dinner or lunch there whenever we were in the city, either just coming in for the day/weekend from the 'burbs or entertaining out of town guests. This was the case on Saturday, and my first disappointment came when I discovered my favorite drink (gin/sage/honey)was no longer being offered. Fortunately, our great waiter asked the bartender if he could still make it, and he did. The next disappointment was learning that our favorite pizza was taken off the menu. The Sardinia was such a light, flavorful combination of unusual ingredients - cauliflower and capers - and much appreciated by this vegetarian. So, two favorites gone. Will I be back? Don't know."

"Really rough night. Had two appetizers that were both flavorless. We tried for a pizza and asked to add a meat. It was piled on top of wilted spinach, undone and greasy. Management took care of bill, but I was hoping for dinner!! Empty on Friday night at 1030!! In Chicago that says something."

"I went with a group of eight, which they could easily accommodate in the back overlooking the pizza ovens. The only draw back was the temperature in the room felt like it was between 78 & 84. A smaller group can be seated at more comfortable tables at the front, or outside.
Pizzas are not at the top of my list of favorite foods, but the Shrimp with basil and pesto was delicious. I will return to sit near the front!"

"I have been there twice now. Both times were terrific. Love the food, and the beef skewers are a WOW. Wait staff in both cases were interesting personable and efficient. It's the perfect place in between white table cloth and a burger joint. The menu has something for everyone."

"I had high hopes for this place, and was left feeling a little disappointed. I was really impressed by the unique combinations of pizza toppings, and I love woodburning oven pizzas! I split the Lorenzo (pancetta, basil and tomatoes) with my friend. The pizza was good, but not spectacular; the crust was also a little burned. What really bothered me was the prices--We had one drink a piece (one beer and one glass of wine) and one pizza, and the tab was over $40!

"Made a reservation for 8:15pm, didn't get seated until 8:30pm. My friend's pizza came out 15 min. before my short ribs came out. The server and manager apologized for the delay. The short ribs were okay - nothing spectacular. I wish they had prepared them longer as they weren't as tender as I would have liked."

"This is the second time my husband and I visited Bar Toma while house hunting in Chicago. We sat at the bar both times and the service was ok. They do have one flat screen tv above the bar area which plays all of the Godfather movies. It was kind of fun watching it the first time for the novelty of it, however, trying to eat and watch the visual movie was getting a bit old. The wood burning oven pizza's are great as same with the meatball. The prices are affordable and the place is always busy."

"This place is way overpriced for what it offers. The fried calamari was just enough for my 9-year old. The short rib entree, was far from an entree. It was two bites of meat with some bizarre fried bean paste covering the entire plate. And as for the pizza.... the crust was soft, undercooked and soggy. I will not come back and would not recommend this place to anyone. I ordered a grey goose cosmo and I'm not sure what I got. Drinks too were pricey and unacceptable."

"While the pizza dough was well-prepared and cooked to a nice crusty Neapolitan consistency, the toppings on my wife's margherita were extremely poor. The tomato sauce was thin, the mozzarella appeared to have been shaved onto the pizza after the pizza was cooked, and the basil consisted of whole basil leaves, which also appeared to have been scatteered on the pizza after it had been cooked. The restaurant boldly repeats Esquire's review that it is the best new pizzeria in America. In fact, it's not even one of the best new pizzerias in Chicago."

"This was not my first time at Bar Toma - it never fails to wow me! We tried the charred carrots (highly recommend) and the mozzarella roll (OK, but not a favorite). We had the meatball pizza which was very delicious....but the best was the dessert!! We had the vanilla gelato with Pizzelle cookies & nutella. Even though we were full, we could not stop eating it. It was very CRAVEABLE!! Our waiter was excellent, very helpful and funny. You need to go - it's a great place to hang with friends or family!"

"The food was pretty average ... they need to expand their kids menu to include a pasta dish besides gnocchi. Most kids don't enjoy a stuffy potato noodle. We also ordered the cheese appetizer and to my surprise they were 3 bland cheeses which was disappointing. Though, to be fair, they were hardy portions."
