"Wow! I was blown away by how bad the mother's day brunch buffet was. I have been to grand hotels with elaborate, beautiful buffets with amazing food and paid the same amount. The quality of the food was bad, as if no one really cared - just slopped it out there. The organization and placement of the buffet was cramped and not very well thought out. This was equivalent to a $7.99 Shoney's breakfast buffet, not a $26, "fancy", mother's day brunch."

"I made this reservation because they posted a menu for Mother's Day. When they called to confirm the reservation, it turned out that they were going to do a buffet, which did not thrill me. The buffet seemed small for the $26 price. I also thought it was odd that it was filled with pork products... tenderloin & ham on the carving station, bacon, sausage, and ham biscuits. For this reason, I don't necessarily feel like I got a good sense of how good the food at this restaurant might be. I'm hoping it was dumbed down for the buffet setting. Nothing was bad, but nothing was remarkable either. I certainly wasn't compelled to go elbow to elbow with the rest of Roanoke for a second helping."

"Probably one of the most inconsistent dining experiences ever. Apparently if large groups are present, small groups are second tier. Slow with service, never mentioned specials, excellent appetizer, tepid main course except for burnt items (not sure who finally brought it to us, not our server). At completion passed our disappoinment on to chef who immediatley came out to attempt to remedy issues (speaks well of his committment), including discounting final bill.
Really a shame because my guess is the issue was with our server and not the kitchen. Other tables with different servers seemed to fare much better.
Will try one more time before final yes/no as other have been pleased with meal and experience"

"After a long week, we found a babysitter and tried out First & Sixth. We got there around 9pm. As soon as we walked in they knew it was us and we're seated immediately. Great setting, very modern and a great, mid-sized bar. Corinne was our server and did an excellent job. It was the best service I have had in a really, really ling time. The food was great too, we just did a couple of appetizers. You should definitely give this place a try, beer you will end up coming back!"

"Dined as a group of 6 we were one of 3 tables seated in the restaurant that we could see (however later we learned there was a private dining area with a party). We ordered appetizers, oysters on the half shell (12) and pimento cheese spread (both quite delicious). We all ordered a salad that was also pretty good. But then we waited, it took 2 hours for us to get our entrees and by then we were perhaps a little cranky about the wait. We were told that they were busy and apologized but then said "you did have 3 courses". The food was fine, not great but fine. They did treat us to a dessert assortment to share as a consolation for the less than timely service. I would go back again to see if this was an anomoly. It was a nice restaurant."

"Overall, I was very impressed with First and Sixth and look forward to going back soon. This was our first visit and the Rockfish in particular was great. Our only complaint was the portion size of the Dr. Pepper pork tenderloin...we were told 9 oz, but it couldn't have been more than 4 oz...not at all sufficient or comparable to the other entree sizes (and one person got a filet at our table!). It's genuinely a small blemish on an otherwise great night. Parking on the street is not as ample as the ad suggests, but there are pay lots around the Patrick Henry. Definitely will return and hope others begin to find this gem in downtown Roanoke!"

"The servers need more training. We sat at the table with menus for 20 minutes before we were given even water.

"Sophisticated atmosphere nicely lit for an intimate dinner with friends or drinks at the bar. Timing of food courses is not consistent. Appetizers may arrive quickly then the presentation of the main courses could be noticeably late. Having said that the food is always innovative, fresh and prepared to our liking. The seafood was lightly seasoned with fresh herbs. The raw oysters are plump and served with a mignonette sauce. My husband wouldn't share the lamb chops because he wanted them all! The light dinners are a perfect choice."

"Went on Feb 15th expecting the Valentine's Day menu had ended; but I was glad to be wrong! Asa was our wonderful server who took excellent care of my wife and I with the 3-course meal selections. It was a fairly busy and packed night, yet the courses made it out warm and perfectly timed. The lollichops (lamb chops served on blue cheese risotto) were awesome as well as the wife's bacon-maple scallops. We enjoyed delicious crisp salads. My main entree of Virginia Rock Fish was perfect. Her main course, the Surf & Turf was even more perfect. Everything was well portioned and superb. Hopefully First & Sixth will be an annual Valentine's Day tradition... but I'm still going to go for the regular menu too."

"One word: Amazing! This restaurant is a remarkable find for Sunday brunch. Had the crab benedict, delicious! Wife had crab omelet and daughter enjoyed shrimp & grits. Front door staff was great, and service was among the best ever with Ginger as our server. Would definitely go again and again; as well as spreading the word among friends and neighbors. Price was reasonable. Noise level was as expected for Sunday brunch, not too loud and not too quiet - it was perfect."

"It was everything we had been told and more. The food was excellent and beautifully presented and the ambiance was welcoming and beautiful. The hotel itself is a beautiful restoration. Our waiter, Steven, even though he was "training" in the waiter role, was very attentive and delightful. Please let him know that we thoroughly enjoyed having him serve us. "My bf dropped me off @ the front door to find a parking spot. We had a 9:00pm reservation and it was already 9:00. It was a cold night so I came in and started fiddling with my coat & broken purse strap. While waiting for my b/f, more than three groups of people had left. One group came out and a young man asked for his windbreaker. It was 10 minutes before my bf showed up. He started walking into the dining area and I asked him about waiting to be seated as the restaurant was suppose to be more upscale than Mickey D's. We had to ask the hostess to be seated. And we had to ask someone else for coat check. She stood 5 feet from me for 10 minutes and ignored me?? Get past the bad first impression and you'll love this restaurant (I did)"

There was a huge party of about 25 - 30 in the restaurant and they were extremely loud...energetic is not a very accurate description for the noise level...it was loud and obnoxious...very unfortunate for the rest of us who were dining that evening."

"What a place! My girlfriend and I went to eat there for Valentines Day. It was such a romantic place to eat and somewhere we certainly will be eating at again. The food was perfect, service was great and the ambiance of the place was outstanding. I could not have picked a better place to spend our first Valentines.
The only complaint that I have is that the tables are close together- if you don't get a booth. I feel like we were on a double date with the couple next to us. I would suggest asking for a booth or perhaps the resturant could spread the tables out so you aren't two feet away from the other guests."

"The filet was outstanding. The flounder was undercooked and the crab had too much filler. Would definitely go back and order the filet again but not the flounder. Very nice atmosphere. Service was slow but we weren't in a hurry."

"We went to have brunch after church and before going to the Roanoke Symphony at the Jefferson Center. The entrees were creative well prepared and presented well. Service was good. It was quiet and easy to have conversation, but it was Sunday morning. We will return for brunch again and may try them for dinner."

"Had an 8PM reservation, and was not seated until 9. Spent extra $40 at bar that wasn't planned. Atmosphere was plain and simple with little ambiance. My seafood pasta dish was good. Wife ordered NY strip which was tough and chewy. Table service was fine. Too many other good places downtown Roanoke. Would not return."

"This was out second visit to FIrst and Sixth. The majority of the food (i.e. the appetiser and my dinner of Rockfish) was prepared nicely, but the New York Strip was so full of gissle that my date was unable to eat it. When the waitress noticed he wasn't eating it, and he mentioned the grissle, she offered us free dessert. This was a nice gesture, but considering the New York Strip was his meal, I would have appreciated it if they had either brought him a fresh steak or offered him the ability to choose something else from the menu. One doesn't expect to find unacceptable cuts of meat when dining at a fine dining establishment. I'm not certain we will return to First and Sixth."

"I was very impressed with 1st & 6th. I was happy to see that the class of Hunter's Grill has been retained if not improver upon. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the restaurant was quite. The music was soft, soothing and I had not problems caring on a normal conversation with my guest. The server was very polite, helpful, and behaved in a manner consistent with a fine establishment. The food was very tasty. We enjoyed our appetizers and meals very much. Congratulations, this is a fine establishment that I hope to visit for some time to come."
