Review 3 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"It was lovely - a Saturday afternoon lunch date with my husband. Excellent service, delicious food and warm, upscale atmosphere. Not too many other diners at the time we were there, so the noise level was very soothing. I expect when crowded, it might be a bit more energetic. If we lived closer, I think this would be one of our favorite "go-to" places!"

Review 4 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Davis Street Fishmarket is featuring New Orleans cuisine currently. They do a great job of rotating menus by season, but keep a number of specialities available all the time. Prices are reasonable and service is great. The choices are wide-ranging (even meat for landlubbers) and unique in many cases. The soups we had were Maquechoux, a corn chowder, and Gumbo. Both were fabulous. For entrees my wife had mahi-mahi which was terrific, but I was the adventurous one and had the special Davis Street Etoufee. It was like I was in the French Quarter! Blackened catfish, shrimp and crawfish in a spicy but manageable sauce over rice. WOW! There's a similar dish called Big Mamou always on the menu. Dining in the back or at the bar, all good!"

Review 6 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The overall experience was average. Considering what I paid for the meal, I think the food should have been better. I ordered Atlantic salmon - it was burnt and quite dry. My friend ordered redfish - it was also dry. The appetizer - spicy cajun shrimp - was very good. I also had some New England clam chowder - that was also tasty. The service was fair. Our waitress, while polite, did not come by often and we had to wait for drink refills. The restaurant was not busy, so I think she could have checked on us a little more frequently. I am willing to give Davis Street Fish Market another try."

Review 9 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Actually I was disappointed. My very good fish had a lump of very cold crab meat dumped on it. Our drinks, Vodka on ice contained 1 very little measured shot for $10!! Our bill was almost $100 and we think it was over priced for what we got and we probably will not return. I can stand stingy bartenders."

Review 11 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We truly miss the Davis Street that was in Schaumburg but closed last year. It was one of our favorite places to dine so I thought that we'd take the long drive out to Evanston for my husband's birthday dinner. We were not disappointed and now we miss our local Davis even more. However, the banana cream pie was awful! It had no taste and the bananas were hard and not tasty at all. That was a disappointment but it won't stop us from going back again."

Review 16 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We have enjoyed Davis Street Fishmarket for many, many years, and it has never disappointed. My wife has offices across the street and goes there frequently for lunch, which is quite good. We went for Valentine's day, got a quiet booth in the back, and had a great meal with champagne. We are currently on 1200 calorie a day diet and were very pleased that servings were reasonably sized. The restaurant specializes in sea food and the variety and freshness are wonderful. Deserts are tasty, if not exotic. We recommend very highly. Just note that it can be crowded with waits on weekend nights, so reservations are a good idea."

Review 18 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Overall I was very pleased with my experience. The food was great. The server knew just when to pop in on us and see if we needed anything. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone I know. I have just one minor issue. I brought my special lady friend here for Valentines Day and we were really lost in the moment-the great food, wine, and service really set the mood for us. Then suddenly the valet comes up to our table telling us that he is going home now and ask which keys are ours (holding up a wad of everyones keys in the place) . Then he proceeds to ask the same question of every other table too. It killed the romantic moment. It also killed his tip from me. VERY VERY TACKY."

"We had a wonderful meal and were fortunate to be there when they were celebrating the foods of the south for Mardi Gras. The menu was transformed into a venue as if you were there.

The service was great and our table was waiting for us when we arrived.

We will definitely go there again and recommend it.

Review 24 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The variety of choices and the regional selections of seafood make Davis Street Fishmarket worthwhile from the start. It was losterfest, and I had to get the lobster pot pie, which was New England in a puff pastry. Excellent. The appetizers we tried were lobster fritters and clam strips: both fried, but light enough that the taste of the seafood came through. My wife has Chilean Seabass, which is a staple on their menu, and it was great. Beer and wine selections were many, and well-priced. Overall a terrific dining experience. Sure to return."

"The restaurant has gone upscale, but the food has gone downhill.

We ordered clam strips as appetizers and they were delicious. But the cioppino is too thick - not nearly as good as the fish chowder they used to have. And my skate - a very large lovely portion, was overcooked and dry.

"We hadn't been back to Davis Street Fishmarket for many years and were pleased that it remains a really solid choice for seafood. We're definitely going back."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"A mixed review. On the upside, the waitress warned us early on that the kitchen was slow that night. The martinis were excellent, made with the specified vodka, not a well brand. On the downside, neither of the filet/lobster entrees came with the promised bearnaise sauce, and we had to flag down the waitress. The lobster tails were very good, but the steaks were disappointing. They were cooked medium rare, as requested, but had no seasoning, no char, and little flavor. I wouldn't get a steak at this restaurant. Another disappointment - the wine list had one of our favorites listed - 2005 Lyeth Meritage - but the waitress said they only had the 2006, which is definitely not as good, so we passed. All in all, acceptable, but no more."

Review 40 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Service was extremely slow. It took 15 minutes or more to receive our drinks, waiter forgot the bread and had to be reminded twice, took an extraordinarily long time to return to the table to see if anything more was needed, and equally long to bring the check. Most of the party enjoyed their food immensely. I had the skate, which I thought was over-cooked, bland, and didn't have enough sauce. King crab was excellent, as were teh mashed potatoes, clam chowder, seafood with gorgonzola ravioli. Wine list sufficient."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Davis Street was recommended to me by a friend. I was looking for a great seafood place to take my wife for her birhtday. She LOVED it. The food was great service was solid and we were able to enjoy a nice quite night out after seeing a good movie and not have to get all dressed up or worry about fitting in. Sits right in the middle of downtown Evanston and has a real relaxed atmosphere. Would DEFINITELY recommend it!"

Review 45 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Had a most enjoyable dining experience. Our reservation was honored and we were seated within a couple of minutes of entering the restaurant. Our waitress was most hospitalble and reviewed some specials. Service throughout the evening was prompt and the delivery of our differtent courses provided us with ample opportunity to enjoy each course from appetizer and salad through the main course. The valet parking was a most important 'add on' to the evening. We will certainly be back!"

Review 46 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"When I knocked over my wine glass, the staff was all over it and cleaned & brought fresh glass. They were accommodating about request to switch asparagus to broccoli. All food came hot and delicious. The only problem was that my husband ordered Chilean sea bass and he felt that what they brought was something else. Since it was good, he ate it and notified them at the end, saving a tiny piece for inspection. They identified it as halibut and offered complimentary dessert. You would think a fish restaurant would know one fish from another. But mistakes happen, no harm done, and we will go back."

Review 47 for Davis Street Fishmarket - Evanston

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"This place has gone down in quality. My favorite dish, "Big Mammou" is still nice--and I've literally enjoyed it for decades. But the walleye my kids had was subpar--they just don't seem to have the finesse they used to. Also, weakest martinis ever--they used to be quite good here. I kind of miss the old place which was sort of dumpy inside but retained a new orleans-esque charm. Now this place seems lost in the crowd of seafood restaurants serving mediocre fish under good lighting."
